Fox and Friends Weekend guest co-host Ainsley Earhardt may not have any children yet but she certainly seems more than willing to try. In a segment on a New York doctor’s innovation to allow women to have children later in life, Ainsley discussed with her co-hosts Dave Briggs and Clayton Morris her childless state and how she might remedy her situation in the future.

Earlier, the three co-anchors conversed about in vitro fertilization and older women’s growing prospects of birthing babies. Dave declared, “The question…when is it too old to have your eggs frozen? When is it too old to give birth to children?” To which, Ainsley then replied, “Freezing the eggs, I have friends that are doing this…in their late thirties, their early forties. They’re freezing their eggs because they’re not married yet.” Co-anchor Clayton Morris interjected, “Fertility drops after forty years old.” “Exactly,” responded Ainsley. She continued, “So when they’re ready to use these eggs, then they’re available. It’s very expensive, though: I want to say its like $20,000 a pop.”

Wisely, Dave said, “As a man, I have a hard time telling a woman when it’s too old to have children. Clayton agreed but added, “At some point, it becomes about you rather than the children.” Dave declared, “But, these women in their mid-to late-forties, I say go for it.”

Ringless, Ainsley responded, “I agree. Hey! I’m not going to knock it ’cause…I’m no spring chicken and I don’t have kids. If I get to be forty years old and I don’t have my kids, then, yeah, I might consider freezing my eggs. We’ll see.”

Chuckling, Clayton jested, “Please keep us updated on that.” Smiling abashedly, Ainsley answered, “I will: I’ll let you know.” Dave chimed, “Yeah, please do!”

Jestem rychle po re-obejrzeniu “Boogie Nights” (P.T. Andersona). Świetny film, który z przymrużeniem oka przybliża widzowi branżę filmów porno w latach 70-tych. Ale nie jest to dokument typu “Inside Deep Throat” (który tłumaczy socjologicznie zjawiska popularności “gatunku” w tamtych latach), to zgrabna fabuła z interesującymi kreacjami aktorskimi (Mark Wahlberg, Burt Reynolds, Julianne Moore) i doskonała dbałość o szczegóły (której brakuje w rodzimej produkcji filmowej, a tak mogłoby być pięknie w filmach typu “Ile waży Koń Trojański?”).

Ale, ale… o czym ja tu! Mark Wahlberg, no właśnie. Pamiętacie jak ten – dziś już uznany i szanowany aktor – jako młodzian biegał po scenie i tworzył “biały hip-hop”, który przez purystów gatunku był odrzucany i raczej sarkastycznie traktowany, ale przez popkulturę wielbiony? Pamiętacie jak Mark Wahlberg zwał się Marky Mark i tworzył na początku lat 90-tych pop-rapowe pogadanki? Sprzedawał dużo, jego duo z panem Prince Ital Joe (mimo wybitnie quasi-reggae-pop-rapowego charakteru) okupowało pierwsze miejsca list przebojów po obu stronach oceanu.

To jeden z jego klipów, który znalazłem w przepastnych archiwach YouTube! Młodsi nie pamiętają, jak Marky Mark tą piosenką stawiał pomnik naszemu(!) pięściarzowi, Dariuszowi Michalczewskiemu (w teledysku, do obejrzenia).

Dzisiaj, kiedy nieśmiało mówi się o spadku popularności rapu/hip-hopu (zgrabnie o tym pisze Mariusz Herma w “Przekroju” nr 46/17.11.09), warto przypomnieć sobie jego korzenie! Na blogu Bartka Chacińskiego (http://chacinski.wordpress.com/) znajdziecie klip Sugarhill Gang z kawałkiem “Raper’s Delight” (uważany za jeden z pierwszych gadanych numerów). Może kończy się pewna epoka w muzyce, która nieśmiało wchodziła do naszej świadomości już od końca lat 70., skradała się i ukrywała w latach 80., by eksplodować w 90., na początku jako domena “niekolorowa” – później jako królestwo czarnych z Eminemem jako wyjątkiem. Oczywiście, w ogóle nie mam zamiaru wchodzić w polemikę typu “co jest prawdziwym rapem”, “kto się sprzedał”, “to przecież hip-hopolo”. Nie mam zamiaru dissować z rodzimymi tuzami sceny, nigdy nie wdziałem szerokich spodni. Jako obserwator “z zewnątrz”, przypominam sobie niemal z sentymentem pewne zjawiska, które dzisiaj zdecydowanie śmieszą!

Pamiętacie MC Hammera z jego samplowanym “U Can’t Touch This”? Nie możecie nie pamiętać! Toż to hit był. A pamiętacie Vanilla Ice z jego samplowanym “Ice Ice Baby”? Ten pierwszy posłużył się motywem z utworu Ricka Jamesa “Super Freak”, ten drugi (do końca zaprzeczał) uszczknął nieco z “Under Pressure” Queen+David Bowie. Wszystkie te nagrania, w dobie internetu, można natychmiast odszukać i cieszyć się nimi. To już archiwalia. Dzisiaj 10 lat w muzyce, to dynamiczna epoka!

W każdym razie Vanilla Ice był białym gniewnym MC, który “za bardzo się starał”! Był takim “one hit wonder“, który po “Ice Ice Baby” nie powtórzył już sukcesu (później nagrał “Hard To Swallow” pod okiem Rossa Robinsona i brzmiał jak Korn!).

Pośród tych wszystkich uroczych panów, był jeszcze niejaki Dee Dee Ramone! Tak, ten z Ramones. On też w pewnym okresie swojej podupadającej kariery, postanowił nagrać rapowy krążek. Jak postanowił – tak i zrobił. Pod koniec lat 80. powstała więc płyta, która przez wielu tytułowana jest dzisiaj “najgorszą płytą świata”. To “Standing In The Spotlight” sygnowane pseudonimem Dee Dee King! Ten niechlubny wyczyn chyba zniechęcił, nieżyjącego już dzisiaj muzyka – do dalszych eksperymentów.

No a potem rozpoczęła się era rapu/hip-hopu, która trwa do dziś, chociaż z tego cut & paste ostatnio widzimy tylko fade out! Warto tym samym przypomnieć sobie pewne marginalne wyczyny – opisanych wyżej panów, z sentymentu, dla zwykłej radochy. A impreza przy tej muzyce, to byłby niezły flow. Zatem zapraszam do obejrzenia/odsłuchania wczesnych ziomali, którzy “za bardzo się starali”. Tacy wcześni “wangster” - wanna be gangster!

John & Edward (I know, I’m a day late but I was busy yesterday so chill!)continued (and extended) their reign as the UK’s favorite *telly* stars this past weekend by playfully-though not quite as genius as it should have been-living up their nickname.  As you know, “double scoop” comes from their resemblance to Vanilla Ice; they are like mini-me’s, at least look-wise.

Doing a mash-up of “Under Pressure” and “Ice Ice Baby” they jumped right into their now standard routine of cockiness and come-hither looks while working the stage, catwalks, the judges, the audience and (more importantly) the camera.  Though with the exception of Dannii Minogue, all the judges ate it up, even Simon (though he didn’t eat as much as sampled) I have to say this was the first time I wasn’t completely taken by their performance. Something was missing, it felt too safe, there wasn’t enough of that “WTF is this?! Terrible! No! Awesome!” reaction to the proceedings.

Anyhow, they are safe once again.  Hopefully they won’t keep going down but go back to up-ing the ante.

El 24 de noviembre se cumplirán 18 años de la muerte de Freddy Mercury y adelantándonos a tal efemérides vamos a enfrentar a una de las grandes canciones de Queen con dos de las múltiples versiones que se han hecho de ella. He escogido aquella fabulosa grabación realizada junto a David Bowie en 1981 titulada Under Pressure. Vaya suma de estrellas para una sola canción, Freddy Mercury y “el camaleón del rock”. La línea de bajo de la canción la hace tan característica que hoy en día sigue siendo una de las más recordadas del grupo.  En 1990 incluso un amago de rapero apodado Vanilla Ice quiso sacar tajada fusilándola torpemente en su Ice Ice Baby sin pedir permiso a sus autores. Tras la pertinente acusación, alegó en su descargo que él le añadió una nota más por lo que podía considerarse como una canción suya. La treta no coló, le cayó un buen puro y su carrera quedó arruinada para siempre. Menos mal, por otra parte.

Un año después de la desaparición de Mercury en 1991, se hizo un concierto tributo en el estadio de Wembley cantándola a dúo Bowie y Annie Lennox (ver video). Aquí tenéis la original como la grabaron en el estudio suizo del “duque blanco”.

La primera de las versiones es la de los británicos Keane. La publicaron como cara-b del single The Night Sky y los beneficios se destinaron para la ONG War Child. Sin separarse mucho de la genuina, los autores de Is It Any Wonder? (la que más me gusta de su repertorio y que anima a cualquiera) hacen una buena réplica, destacando las notas altas que alcanza Tom Chaplin.

La otra versión es la de la joven promesa Joss Stone, que ha pasado de ser la niña consentida  a ser marginada por su discográfica EMI. Sus abrumadoras ventas de su disco debut, del que colocó 4 millones de copias, no le han servido para ganarse cierta libertad e independencia. Su último larga duración lo grabó sin decir nada a su casa de discos y se lo entregó después ya terminado. Algo que no les hizo mucha gracia a sus jerifaltes, que no permiten que los artistas hagan y deshagan a su antojo. Finalmente, tras un amago de espantada a la competencia, ha visto la luz y su adelanto Free Me ya se puede escuchar por la radio.

Su aportación a la de Queen se debe principalmente al toque soul y a su inconfundible voz, más propia de una cantante negra, algo que contrasta con su juventud y sobre todo con su piel blanca.

“Alright stop, collaborate and listen, Ice is back” with the same fucking song he’s been singing for the last twenty years.  I know, I know, Vanilla Ice doesn’t seem like such a timely victim to be thinned from the herd, but that was before this aired on the “Early Show” this morning:

Robert Van Winkle, aka Vanilla Ice, I bow my head to you for being the first white boy to take the rapping world by storm.  The guy does deserve some accolades, after all, “Ice Ice Baby” was the first hip hop song to top the Billboard single chart and the album the hit was on became the fastest selling hip hop album of all time.  Not to mention the fact that every suburban white kid at my school, including myself, knew the words to “Ice Ice Baby.”  Now that all that flattery is out of the way, lets get down to the nitty gritty.  Vanilla Ice just won’t go the fuck away.  He couldn’t go quietly into the night like such one hit wonders as Dexy’s Midnight Runners and Chumbawumba. No, this shit stick had to wear out his welcome by not only changing his music style to crappy hard rock, but then still expecting everyone to buy his crappy hard rock albums. Instead of trying to reinvent yourself, why couldn’t you just quit while you were ahead?  Actually I know why, because he’s a walking celebrity cliche and has too big of a drug habit to support.

So once again you have made your way back into the mainstream thanks to the Early Show having some bullshit segment on what was cool twenty years ago.  Although I don’t think you should have delusions of grandeur about being too cool to perform your one hit, I also think it’s a tad bit pathetic that you seem to whore yourself out for any opportunity to perform the one song that made you socially relevant.  It’s sad to think that by imagining a world sans Vanilla Ice, a major portion of my childhood would be stripped away from me…but nobody said this job would be easy.

In a world where Vanilla Ice didn’t exist to make all future white boy rappers the laughing stock of the hip hop world:

• We’d all have that $6 back that we spent on going to see one of the worst movies of all time, Cool as Ice.  Don’t act like you weren’t stoked when that movie came out…

• The “Surreal Life” would’ve been forced to find another washed up celebrity to be on their show, what a dilemma…
• Todd Bridges would’ve had to fight another washed up celebrity on “Celebrity Boxing.”
• We would’ve never been able to witness this amazing meltdown broadcast on MTV:

• No one would’ve been able to look so ridiculous in glittery jump suits and whatever that hairdo was:

• On a sad note, we would never have gotten to experience the “Ninja Rap” in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Secret of the Ooze:

• Florida would be minus one more crazy, white trashy, spouse abusing, drug using, self destructive loser.

We all had fun singing “Ice Ice Baby,” but now its time for it to die along with Vanilla Ice.  Unfortunately, unless this clown is locked up in the slammer, he’ll keep pushing his crappy straight edge rock and whoring himself out to anyone who wants to pay him to sing “Ice Ice Baby” for fifty bucks.  Hey Vanilla, I’ll pay you fifty bucks to sing “Ninja Rap” and then jump off a building, how bout that?

But one has to have dreams right?

We all try to make it in the world day by day.  It’s a struggle sometimes and the motivation can be a little lackluster at best.  But every once in a while something snaps you back to reality, usually in the form of one wild night.  Out with your friends, being loud and silly.  Hitting a McDonald’s at 3am.  Singing Ice Ice Baby at a night of Karaoke.  Getting so drunk that you might just pee your pants.  These are the nights where you don’t care about rent or your job, and you’re actual in the moment.  Why is it so hard to find that anymore?

If you’ve ever been in love you’ll know that feeling of absolute bliss when the girl or guy of your dreams walks into view and for a moment nothing else matters.  I consider that living in the purest form.   So what if you get a little blotto to achieve this state from time to time, what matters is you’re living.  You’re actively participating in a distraction from the rest of your life.  We’re all very aware of our own responsibility to ourselves and others and because of this we think too much.  Don’t get me wrong, thinking is fantastic!  Thinking got us to the moon.  Thinking made pregnant women stop drinking & smoking while carrying.  Thinking is a damn good practice but like everything, too much of one thing is never good.

We all need to let off a little steam once in a while.  Whether that be in a steamy relationship, Saturday morning cartoons or doing a shot with the fellas – we need those moments of untethered consciousness.  And in those selected minutes you will really live.  Yes even by watching Saturday morning cartoons.  So go out and do something.  Dance with someone – it’s a 3 minute distraction from life!  Go for a walk without purpose.  Explore your neighbourhood without agenda.  And I can guarantee that in those simple moments where you let the veil of reality fall, there will be peace there.  Microscopic moments of unaided peace.  Just something to think about.

I would post a picture, a before and after shot — but my mother reads this blog and I really don’t like the idea of scaring (or scarring) any small children (or husbands) that may happen to look over your shoulder. (And no, Mom, I don’t really have a “before” shot.)

But yes, today is the day my boobs fell down. Last Friday I found a single grey hair in my eyebrows. It wasn’t that long ago that I discovered that I was growing a beard (I am seriously considering making the “Bearded Ladies of the Quilt Guild” quilt). Why is this happening all at once? This is NOT fair! I’m just saying.

AND what the heck is with the saying “I’m just saying”??? I’m so tired of saying that I’m just saying. Why am I saying it? Where did it come from?

To heck with it all, I’m shopping for new t-shirts with funny sayings to cover my fallen boobs. Wanna see?

I looked down upon the picture and thought it good

I thought my first post for today (Yes, twenty seven minutes into Saturday) should be one of artsy caliber. I thought I would dust off some old files and would promote what I thought was the best of my photoshop skills, from scratch anyway.

It was originally done a couple of months ago, one day, a day full of incredulous amounts of boredom. It’s admittedly rather amazing what can manifest through complete and utter emptiness. Much like the universe, spawning from one single dense point where life, the universe and everything is created. (The answer is 42, I know you’re thinking it.)

But good news, in the first day this blog reached 41 hits, the following day (yesterday) it successfully received more than double it’s hits, with a whopping 96, naturally if you’ve ever owned a blog and your hits have doubled in a day, you know what it feels like. It’s a rather glorious feeling indeed. Check back, and then again, and again, chances are my blog is tri-daily. So you will never be out of articles of writing to read.

Today’s dedication to my wife overseas. she knows why I picked this tune. Hope you enjoy it, too.

Vanilla Ice – Ice Ice Baby (Edit)

I hate the song “All Summer Long” by Kid Rock….. the reasons include, but are not limited to:

The very beginning sounds a HELL of a lot like “Werewolves of London” by Warren Zevon… which, incidentally, is a song that I love. Because I love “Werewolves of London,” and “All Summer Long”  sounds like the beginning of that song, I get my hopes up, only to have them shattered.

Not only does the song steal the intro melody of THAT song, they steal whole pieces of “Sweet Home Alabama” by Lynard Skynard. Come on, Kid Rock, have you really lost all ability to think for yourself? Is it not possible to come up with something original? It’s one thing to do a cover of a song, but to steal parts of other songs and then call it your own… that is just musical theivery. Like when Vanilla Ice did “Ice, Ice Baby” and stole the beginning of Queen’s “Under Pressure”.

And then, to top it all off, every time the song comes on the radio, someone turns it up.. like “Oh my GOD! I LOVE this song..” And inside, I die a little.

Kid Rock, for you, I have lost all respect. Not that I really had much in the first place.

Being forgetful isn’t one of the worst personality traits in the world, but it’s definitely annoying. Sure, we’ve all got loads going on in our brains – for me it’s a constant battle between malaise and euphoria, but when something important has happened in your life, it’s usually good to remember it. Like getting married perhaps, a small fact which Carrie forgets when someone asks her what’s going on in her life. I assume that her brain was clouded by all the major events occurring in her life. After all, there aren’t enough clothes sales in the world.

The engagement memory loss was just another clusterfuck in an ever increasing calamity of errors in Carrie and Aidan’s relationship. Carrie isn’t even wearing the wedding ring on her finger, instead wearing it around her neck. Like a necklace. A wedding ‘ring’ on a necklace. She might as well have bent Aidan over and spanked him right there and then in front of everybody because that’s about as much respect as she’s giving him. Might as well wear the veil between her saggy fucking tits.

An episode of regret and disappointment for all concerned really here. Samantha was irate as her rich boss and sometime fuck buddy wouldn’t commit to a relationship. I was half interested in what was happening until my companion watching the show observed that Samantha looked like a goat from a particular angle. It got me thinking as all classic observations tend to do – Sex And The City characters as animals. Obviously Carrie’s a horse, Charlotte’s a particularly twitchy Manx cat, and Miranda reminds me a lot of the most despicable and disgusting creature the world has ever seen – the humble woman.

Why do people moan all the time anyway? Miranda’s moaning because she can’t get enthusiastic at the thought of having a bouncing baby boy. How could anyone not feel a slight thrill at the back of the neck at the thought of a Steve Jr in the world? Clearly Miranda, and almost definitely Charlotte who tried to get rid of the anguish she was feeling after her break up with Trey, by tap-dancing. And Carrie, constantly whining and moaning about anything and everything. Moving in with Aidan, getting married to Aidan – everything just seems like a struggle to her. Honestly though, this whole episode reeked of a one legged midget attempting to moonwalk. The embarrassment of it all, I was cringing at some aspects. When a Perez Hilton esque gossip columnist cunt character not being able to get their cock up isn’t the lowest point of the show, then you really have to wonder how these people sleep at night.

I’ve been reading about Maslow’s hierarchy of needs recently, which is basically a theory on the units that make people well adjusted. They go up in order, so the basic stuff like breathing and eating are at the bottom, key components that make us function. The big guns like morality and lack of prejudice are right at the top, suggesting that you can only reach self actualization when you have morals and don’t judge people. You won’t be surprised to learn that judging from this theory, pretty much all the characters of Sex And The City limp along on the bottom rung, which also includes ’sex’, inferring that we need sex to make us psychologically happy. Whilst that might be true, it’s not the only thing that makes us happy, which is where the dickheads on this show go wrong.

Gloom, despair and sadness make up the entire basis for this episode, which at six in the morning isn’t the sort of frivolity I was aiming for. Everything just made me sick and desolate, emotions summed up when Carrie and Aidan essentially broke up right next to a waterfall. Whilst it’s slightly mature that Carrie told Aidan that she wasn’t ready for marriage, that’s down to her hideously child-like personality which is gonna take a lot more than a new shiny ring to change. If she’s not ready at her age, when will she be? And for whom? Carrie is one of those people who says ‘I love you’ to everyone and doesn’t really mean it. Just don’t say it at all if you don’t feel it.

Or if you feel it, do something about it. Maybe Charlotte should have dealt with the Trey problem earlier, maybe Miranda needs to solve her ginger baby problem immediately, maybe Carrie should have slit her wrists and be done with it. There is just no progress here, except ironically for the oldest of the bunch. Samantha was genuinely affected by her boss not wanting to make their ‘relationship’ into an actual relationship rather than a fuck buddy scenario. It was a depressing, but I had to ask myself, was she just growing up? Can a leopard really change its spots? Can a forty-five year old woman really stop sleeping around after a lifetime of opening and entering that would put an automatic door to shame? Can I stop asking questions? Can I?

I just feel down you know. When Carrie told Aidan – with a straight face that she knew he didn’t trust her, it was almost the end of the world for me. Watching her skanky fucking face lighting up like a light bulb was too much to bear. Where are the heroes in this battered and embittered world? Bring back Steve, bring back Gay Stanford for fucks sake I am human and I want to be loved just like everybody else does.
