Quebec is snow and ice-bound for many months of the year, so it’s only natural that we have al

Quebec is snow and ice-bound for many months of the year, so it’s only natural that we have always sought relief from winter’s fierce grip. One modern reaction to winter is to flee to the south (especially Florida) but traditional Quebeckers like to jump right in and enjoy their mid-winter carnivals. The best-known at the moment is the annual Carnaval de Québec. Do you recognize the snowman on the left? That’s the Quebec Carnival mascot – Le Bonhomme Carnival.

However back in the 1880s, it was Montreal’s carnival that was the more famous and for good reason since it had lots of traditional Quebec and Native American winter activities like hockey, lacrosse and tobogganing. However, I think what really put Montreal’s Carnivals on the map were the Ice Palaces that were constructed each year in Montreal’s Dominion Square (now Dorchester Square).

What you see here is a vintage postcard that was mailed in 1904 but which depicts a late 19th century Ice Palace. After looking through historical images at the McCord Museum and Ice Cubicle, I believe that this might be the one that was built for Montreal’s 1885 Carnival.

Genealogy Notes

A handwritten message on the front of the card says:

“Built with blocks of ice. This is the last ice palace that was built in Canada, ten years ago.”

The message was sent to a Miss Ethelynn Mowry (1884-1961) of Providence, Rhode Island (U.S.A.). Based on several online sources (no primary research, see sources below) this would seem to be the Ethelyn Mowry who married Lewis Garfield in 1907. This couple lived in Providence (RI). Her parents were said to be Joseph Swallow from the UK and Adelaide Eliza Olney of Rhode Island.

The Winter Carnival

Interesting items in relation to the approaching event

Messrs Thomas Doherty & Co, tea importers, of no 33 St Sacrement street, agents for Messrs Chase and Sandborn’s (Boston, Mass) standard Java coffee, are about to erect a beautiful ice building on Dominion Square, adjacent to the Ice Palace, where the public will be served free with hot coffee during the Carnival week.

The official programme of each day’s events is now in the hands of the printers and will be published in a few days.

The electric wires are being placed in position for the illumination of the Ice Palace.

A telegram, detailing the leading features of the Carnival, was sent out by the New York Associated Press on Thursday, and appeared yesterday in about 500 Western and Southern newspapers.

One of the features of the Carnival will be the grand ball given by the Master of the Montreal Hunt Club, Mr A Baumgarten is to give a ball at the Kennels on Tuesday evening, Feb. 5th. His Excellency the Governor General and Lady Landsdowne have been invited and have already expressed their intention of being present.

Mr. Erastus Wiman, in a letter to the Secretary, expresses a wish that accommodations could be found in Montreal for 20,000 more visitors, as he is confident that the above number could be attracted to the Carnival.

Intelligence from Boston is to the effect that the interest manifested in the approaching carnival is increasing every day, and that the various railroad offices are daily besieged by seekers after information.

The secretary of the carnival committee has received a communication from Mr H Irwin enclosing a plan for a public toboggan slide on Fletcher’s Field, near the Landsdowne slide. The writer suggests that the pronounced slide be thrown open to the general public and that it be erected by the Park Commissioners.

An Ice Palace, 3D movie experience and Liverpool’s first ever big wheel… it can only mean Christmas time at Liverpool ONE!

Liverpool’s premier shopping and leisure destination, Liverpool ONE, will be transformed into a winter wonderland this Christmas as Santa arrives at his magical Ice Palace and shoppers enjoy a bird’s eye view of the city from the Liverpool ONE Wheel.

Celebrations get underway on Wednesday 18th November from 4pm with a festive extravaganza of Christmas characters to get the party started. Musical entertainment is provided by local choirs and bands

At 5pm, Santa will arrive and open the doors to his Ice Palace on Paradise Street and welcome in children from across the region to tell him their Christmas wishes. And of course, no visit to Santa is complete without a gift!

On Chavasse Park, Liverpool’s first ever wheel will welcome its first guests from 6pm. At 60 metres high, the Liverpool ONE Wheel offers views of the city’s waterfront and iconic landmarks which are guaranteed to be truly stunning.

As always, the shops at Liverpool ONE will be open until 8pm with Debenhams staying open until midnight to celebrate their Mega Day event.

Go Penguin also plays a big part in the Christmas celebrations throughout the city and Liverpool ONE is no exception with nine penguins making it their home. Look out for the exclusive Cath Kidston designed penguin and the Liverpool ONE competition-winner’s penguin, which will arrive on November 22.

Throughout Christmas families will be able to take a break from shopping and enjoy a magical 3D Christmas mini-movie! Called Tinkerdoodle, the 3D experience lasts 15 minutes and takes viewers on a magical journey with Santa as he tries to deliver presents on Christmas Eve but his new elf Tinkerdoodle causes chaos. The film will be shown every day adjacent to the Ice Palace (see signage for details).

With a gift wrapping service, Christmas choirs and entertainment throughout the season as well as late night shopping every night of the week (excluding Sunday) until 9pm (and 7pm on Saturdays) from November 26, there really is something for all the family this Christmas at Liverpool ONE.

I walked the streets alone and looked everywhere. Sure enough, I was solo molo!

I walk a lonely road
The only one I that have ever known
Don’t know were it goes
But its home and I walk alone

I walk this empty street
On the Blvd. of broken dreams
Were the city sleeps
And I’m the only one and I walk alone

My shadows the only one that walks beside me
My shallow hearts the only thing that’s beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
Till then I’ll walk alone

Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ahhh
Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ahhh

I’m walking down the line
That divides me somewhere in my mind
On the border line of the edge
And were I walk alone

Read between the lines of what’s
Messed up and every things all right
Check my vital signs to know I’m still alive
And I walk alone

My shadows the only one that walks beside me
My shallow hearts the only thing that’s beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find
Till then I’ll walk alone

Last night on Ice Palace the IMAF army showed up and began an invasion of our quiet server. I don’t totally understand the concept of the Club Penguin armies, but it was entertaining. I can’t say that they chanted the phrase, because it never disappeared…but they always said “Search Impossible Mission Force”. Of course, I couldn’t resist. I Googled it and it led me to this blog: http://imaf.wordpress.com/ that is written by Slimeball2007 and the army is led by Flippy. Don’t exactly know who Dan Solo is, but he is their ambassador. Interesting, but I am still left confused. I’ve known that armies on CP exist for a long time. I was shocked when I first heard about an army against yellow penguins….which very well be the IMAF since they seem to be red penguins. I read a lot of the blog, but, I’m retarded so I can’t tell you exactly what their goal is. Owning a server seems impossible to me. If you are interested in joining IMAF take a look at their blog and sign up. I’m not supporting wars, armies, or conflict. It’s your choice. Their official badge is pretty awsome though.

Ice Palace, Dark Dark Dark, To Kill a Petty Bourgeouise, and Caroline Smith and The Good Night Sleep

Ice Palace, Dark Dark Dark, To Kill a Petty Bourgeouise, and Caroline Smith and The Good Night Sleeps. This was one of those shows. The ones you hear about but never get to or want to go to beforehand. Anyway, down to business.

The main event, the reason I came to this show, Ice Palace. They stole the show, but it was, after all, their special night and they deserved it. I had seen them before and they made the night for me then, too. I came up with one word that sums it all up but still does it no justice: “Good.” Now, when I say “Good” I don’t mean it like “Good, not great” or “Yeah, it was alright…” No. I mean this in the sense that it is the exact opposite of everything that is bad; the epitome of everything worth doing; great music, camaraderie, entertainment, and meaning. Adam Sorensen’s voice is as thick as velvet. The crowd and the band feed off of one another’s excitement. To cap off the show they played “Thoughts/Facts” and invited Arlen Peiffer of The Good Night Sleeps, up on stage to help them out on tambourine.

Dark Dark Dark exhibits a maelstrom of creativity by combining Blues, Cajun, Folk, and something else beyond my words. The band consists of three members: Jonathan Kaiser (cello), Nona Marie Invie (lead vocals, squeeze-box), and Marshall LaCount (Banjo). My first thought when hearing this was that these individuals do not belong to this era. They belong to a bygone era of steam engines, sea shanties, and coal miners; especially with the stellar grouping of accordion and banjo. As a string player I have to comment that Jonathan was by far one of the best cellists I have seen perform at a non-classical concert (not like another cellist I saw recently). Also, there’s nothing I love more in music than a solid pizzicato, and there was plenty of that.

The first band was Caroline Smith and the Good Night Sleeps starring our favorite bubbly drummer, Arlen Peiffer, Jesse Schuster (on upright bass), Alex Ramsey (keys) and Caroline Smith. I had heard Caroline’s old solo stuff previous to this and honestly, it just wasn’t my thing. But seeing this show completely reversed my opinion on her voice (although, I still feel like it’s somehow different from before, maybe it’s that tiny bit of a drawl she has developed or maybe it’s that smoky, dark aspect). Her singing alone blew me away, and when we factor the band in, well, I’m still recovering today. I need no more convincing.

Having scrambled through the mass of drab winter coats nuzzling their way through the exit from the Prospekt of the Bolsheviks metro, I skidded across the churning black ice floes on the sidewalk toward the lar’ki (food stands) clustered around the metro like Conestoga wagons around a pioneer encampment. I grabbed a Bochkaryov Krepkoe (“strong” beer, meaning 8% alcohol content) and some fried cabbage and made my way to the “Ice Palace” stadium for the local hockey club’s first post-season match, against Moscow rivals Spartak.

There awaited the tightest event security I’ve ever seen. Various siloviki — a word The New York Times prints as is because it’s such a Russian concept that it can’t be translated — snapped their batons and struck grim poses near every exit, bathroom or sketchy corner. OMON, the paramilitary police force that enjoys free reign to “correct” citizen behavior, which incidentally often gets its kicks by rounding up sketchballs in parks and giving them the terrorist treatment, was out in force, marched by in tight formations in full riot gear. In short, the kind of completely egregious, atavistic show of force that lingers on in Russia like a bad habit.

On the other hand, however, there was no massive brawl between SKA and Spartak fans after Petersburg lost the game 2-1. Siloviki literally surrounded the small section of Moscow fans toward the end of the match, not allowing anyone to leave the section during the final minutes, or even as the SKA fans filed out after the final buzzer. It looked like a giant piece of installation art — a red mass jumping up and down within a ring of olive green.

I’ll freely admit the Moscow fans were hardcore enough to possible take on a vastly superior number of SKA supporters. Throughout the game, the noises eminating from their section sounded like a Zulu camp before a battle — a stream of strange chants and cries rung out in time with a large drum one fellow kept banging the entire game.

SKA fans, in comparison, had all the cheering power of a grandma with a voicebox, but did have one real winner: “Vodka, SKA and only pobeda (“victory”)!” And it was indeed the only victory left to clame as they filed out of the stadium, back toward the metro and the lar’ki.

I haven’t written much about Minnesota, so today I thought I’d write about one of St. Pa

I haven’t written much about Minnesota, so today I thought I’d write about one of St. Paul’s oldest and most beloved festivals-the St. Paul Winter Carnival. The St. Paul Winter Carnival began yesterday, January 22. When I was growing up, the St. Paul Winter Carnival helped to liven up the after-Christmas winter doldrums.

In my family we, like most Twin Cities inhabitants, all knew the legend behind the carnival…how the good King of the Winds, King Boreas gets defeated by the god of Fire, Vulcanus on the last day of the carnival. King Boreas promises to return next winter, and Vulcanus brings the warmth of spring and summer. The winter court gets selected the first day of the carnival. There are very picturesque titles: Queen of the Snows, Wind Princesses, Klondike Kate, etc. During our city festival in June, Vulcanus’ followers, the mischievous Vulcans would scare us with their loud horns and grease paint. The Vulcans would go into the parade crowd and mark people’s cheeks with a black V for Vulcanus. We would go to one of St. Paul’s parks to see the beautiful ice sculptures and some years we’d see the ice palace-a huge, multistory palace construction of ice made from ice taken from Minnesota’s lakes. We would eagerly read the St. Paul newspaper, St. Paul Pioneer Press, to try to figure out where the Winter Carnival medallion was hidden. We never could make sense of the daily clues, but enjoyed following along. Usually the medallion is buried somewhere under the snow in one of St. Paul’s city parks. There are parades too, but we preferred to stay away from the crowds and stay indoors.

Why did the Winter Carnival begin? It began in the 1880s as a way to show off St. Paul and to prove that it is possible to survive and even have fun during the coldest part of a Minnesota winter, contrary to the view of a writer in New York. In 1886 St. Paul, MN was actually one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S. and city leaders wanted this to continue. The festival was modeled after the one in Montreal, Canada. The Winter Carnival has been held every year since 1886. To this day the metropolitan area of St. Paul/Minneapolis has the dubious honor of having coldest mean temperature of any metropolitan area in the lower 48 U.S. states. The weather does play a big factor at the carnival. Sometimes the weather is unseasonably warm and some events like the ice sculpture contest are cancelled due to melting. Other years there are sub-zero temperatures that keep even hardy Minnesotans indoors and cause outdoor events to be cancelled.

I would usually recommend visiting Minnesota in either June or September because those months usually have the best weather, but if you ever find yourself in Minnesota around the last week of January or the first week of February check out the Winter Carnival. I guarantee it will be a memorable experience!

The phrase “Camp Snoopy” brings back good memories.

You know what the “Great Minnesota Get Together” is.

You know how to correctly pronounce the following: Eagan, Mendota Heights, Mahtomedi, Plymouth, Lake Calhoun, Shakopee, Osseo, Wayzata, Osceola, Chisago, & Vadnais Heights.

You’ve heard the “Erik the Bike Man” tune before!

Two words: “snow emergency”

You know that KDWB plays today’s hit music.

You look forward to days when the temp is above 0.

Your mom told you that dinner was going to be “Hot Dish” and not casserole.

You’ve seen a head made out of… wait for it… butter!

The first thing you talk about with someone is what roads you took to get there, and the second thing is the weather.

You call the University of Minnesota “the U.”

You can go to the Mall of America whenever you feel like it.

The new *old* play returns tomorro to the stage. b prepared to see those blue and pink halos everywhere and lots of super heros runnin around. i may even put on my super hero suit and try to save the day…hey, don’t i do that anyways?

The word is also out bout a winter party that will start on January 23. good at least the non-members will get to have a party this month too. they will just have to wait longer. looks like it will be a fiesta type party. that should b alot of fun.

I especially liked the question asked to aunt arctic about where penguins could go on vacation. she suggested the beach, ski sloops, and um somethin else i think. anyways when i heard the beach i was off to ride a jet ski or somethin. cuz cord does love the beach and thats one thing bout winter that i hate. not enough fun in the sun!

The art team has posted a pic of wat we can expect for the christmas party thats due to start December 19. grrr 10 more days!

i remember last years party it was really cool. i especially liked the picture takin area at the cove. unfortunatly im also rememberin how hard it was to find ur buddies. ur buddies would not show up until u logged onto a server. endless hours were spent hoppin around diff servers until u found ur friends. the cp staff was enjoyin a long holiday break too. so the gliche lasted for weeks. grrr. thats when i decided to make ice palace my home. when id finally find a buddy id tell em to check ice palace first and thats where id b. ….thats where iv been ever since.

This was by far the most challenging palace I have encountered in the game. There was a good mix of puzzles with action and reflex. There was also an element of strategy when it came to managing your magic level. Since entering the palace required using the fire rod, if you died with an empty magic meter you lost a lot of time going back out into the world to replenish.

While exploring the palace I found the “large treasure” which was a suit of armor. It reduces the level of damage you take per hit, which is much appreciated in the boss battle.

Getting to the boss room took some serious navigation. You had to navigate down several floors and through many rooms to trip a switch that toggled the blue/red barricades. After doing this you had to navigate back up a floor or two to find a hole in the floor that puts you on the other side of the barricades. From there it’s not too hard to get to the boss room.

The tricky part of this boss is managing your magic. I’m not sure if I was doing something wrong, but it took a full depletion of my magic using the fire rod to get the boss out of his block of ice. Then you have to collect the little magic containers that get dropped while avoiding the falling ice and shards. Of course, there are three roving snow/eyeballs to defeat.

After dying during the battle two or three times, it gets very frustrating. I could find no way to short circuit the complex navigation and backtracking to get back to the boss battle. Then, I remembered I had two empty bottles. I went back to the fairy room I found in this palace and netted and bottled two fairies. This makes the final boss extremely easy. You basically get three lives for the single battle. I like that approach.

This palace was fairly exhausting, though fun. I didn’t have the motivation to navigate to the sixth palace, but perhaps I will later today or tomorrow.

Time played: 2 hours

I have explored 5 of the 7 floors in this palace. It is certainly large, but each floor is only 4 – 5 rooms on average. This palace is challenging and fun. For one thing, you cannot enter without magic. The first room has a single enemy that can only be defeated with the fire rod, which requires some magic in your meter. Unfortunately, at one point I ran out and died. So I had to leave the palace and replenish my magic.

I had to use the mirror to bounce to the light world to explore. In the process, I found a cave where you can toss rupees in a pool of water. When you hit 100 rupees in the water this large fairy appears and offers to increase the amount of bombs or arrows you can hold. I’ve been maxed out at 999 rupees for a while, so I increased both of them twice before heading back to the Ice palace.

Back at the ice palace, I obtained the map, compass and big key. I also did some exploration. I like this palace because of the variations in floor material. Some rooms are icy requiring a little more precision and timing for moving around (think of the ice levels in Super Mario 2). Other rooms have moving floors. One in particular has a floor that periodically changes direction. This is tricky, but it makes it very entertaining.

Hopefully I can get back to the game tonight and finish up this palace.

Time played: 60 minutes
