This will probably be the last post till next week.

Icebergs and Body Parts

Dr. Solomon R. Metzger, the global warming specialist, was not enjoying his visit as guest lecturer at the College of Beyond Belief. Every time Izzard was sober enough to meet with him, the scientist looked either alarmed or confused. To rectify the situation, Izzard marched over to the ag school and chewed out Dean Yeast.

Yeast tried not to listen to Izzard’s tirade by practicing a visualization technique he was trying to master. How useful it would be if he had a recording of Izzard saying TA’s didn’t need to speak or understand English. So he visualized bringing up the subject of TA’s again with Izzard and surreptitiously turning on his pocket recorder.

When Izzard was finally silent, he sneered at Yeast.

“How about a ceremony of some sort,” Yeast suggested. He was damned if he was going to act defensive. “Why not dedicate the plastic iceberg in the main quad to Dr. Metzger.”

Izzard raised his eyebrows and nodded. “The biggest game of the season is in three days. Newly named Iceberg University will hold a dedication ceremony an hour before kickoff!”

Gregor heard about the ceremony and Roland Roscoe’s selection as m.c. No surprise there, Gregor thought. Izzard always held a brunch at 9 a.m. before home games. And was plastered by 9:15. He’d attend the dedication propped up by a handler the university had recently hired.

The dedication of the iceberg! A perfect place for Roscoe’s violent demise. Early on in the ceremony, Gregor fantasized, when Roscoe was standing alone in front of the iceberg, it would explode, inexplicably. Roland Roscoe’s body parts would rain down all over campus.

(CNN) — A massive iceberg — more than twice the size of New York’s Manhattan island — is drifting slowly toward Australia, scientists said Wednesday.

The iceberg, measuring 140 square km (54 square miles), cleaved off an ice shelf nearly 10 years ago and had been floating near Antarctica before commencing on its unusual journey north.

Named B17B, it was about 1,700 km (1,056 miles) off the coast of West Australia, according to the country’s Antarctic Division.

“B17B is a very significant one in that it has drifted so far north while still largely intact,” said Australian Antarctic Division glaciologist Neal Young, who spotted the slab using satellite images taken by NASA and the European Space Agency.

“It’s one of the biggest sighted at those latitudes.”

Authorities have issued a shipping warning as a rare giant iceberg is spotted approaching Australia

Authorities have issued a shipping warning as a rare giant iceberg is spotted approaching Australia’s southwest coast.
The cliff of ice, measuring 54 square miles, was seen 1,100 miles (1,700 kilometres) off the coast of Sydney today, sparking fears for passing ships.
Experts fear that the iceberg, known as B17B, will collapse into hundreds of smaller blocks as it approaches warmer waters, creating hazardous conditions for mariners.
The Bureau of Meteorology said the iceberg was observed southwest of the West Australian coast at 12pm on December 9 and is being monitored through satellite imaging.
The iceberg dislodged from Antarctica around a decade ago when parts of two major ice shelves – the Ross Sea Ice Shelf and Ronne Ice Shelf – fractured.
Glaciologist Neal Young of the Australian Antarctic Division said he was not aware of such a large iceberg being found in the area since the days when 19th century clipper ships plied the trade route between Britain and Australia.
Dr Young said: “It’s still 1,700 kilometres away, so it’s quite a long way away, it’s not really on our doorstep yet but it’s been heading steadily towards us.”
Icebergs are not uncommon, but this one, created when a large block of ice broke off the Ross Ice Shelf in 2000, is very large and is the equivalent of 87 square miles in area.

They call it B17B, or, as I prefer, BMFI – Big mother-fucking iceberg. It broke off from Antarctica about 10 years ago and is about 140 km square, 19 km long and 8 wide. And it’s headed for Western Australia. WA? Icebergs? Part of WA is in the tropics – admittedly the northern bit. I bet the climate change deniers will use it as evidence that the world is cooling: lookie here, we’re getting icebergs in WA; it can’t be that hot.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the once-in-a-century cliff of ice, which dislodged from Antarctica about a decade ago before drifting north, was being monitored using satellites.

“Mariners are advised that at 1200 GMT on December 9, an iceberg approximately 1,700 kilometres (1,054 miles) south-southwest of the West Australian coast was observed,” it said, giving the iceberg’s coordinates.

“The iceberg is 140 square kilometres in area — 19 kilometres long by eight kilometres wide.”

Experts believe the iceberg — known as B17B — is likely to break up as it enters warmer waters nearer Australia, creating hundreds of smaller icebergs in a hazard to passing ships.

“It’s still 1,700 kilometres away, so it’s quite a long way away, it’s not really on our doorstep yet but it’s been heading steadily towards us,” glaciologist Neal Young said Thursday.

Young earlier told AFP that an iceberg of that size had probably not been seen in the area since the days when 19th century clipper sailing ships plied the trade route between Britain and Australia.

The iceberg has been floating around Antarctica since shearing off the icey continent but had lately begun heading north because of ocean currents and weather conditions.

Its discovery comes after two other large icebergs were spotted further east, off Australia’s Macquarie Island, followed by more than 100 smaller chunks heading towards New Zealand.

Young described the icebergs as uncommon, but said they could become more frequent if sea temperatures rise through global warming.

Source: SGGP Bookmark & Share

One of the most amazing sights in Iceland is the Jökulsárlón Lagoon. The vast glacial caps in Iceland find an end in this lagoon, where you can see the icebergs drifting away to melt down into the sea. Although the ice caps in Iceland are undoubtedly one of its major attractions, the natural beauty of this peculiar island is just jaw-dropping. Waterfalls, rifts, geysers, black beaches and craters are just some of the sights you would never forget if you have the privilege of spending some time near the Polar Circle.

It’s warm enough during the day, but the night is so cold you have to close everything in. When I moved here, they warned me – you could catch the fever or worse. The desert is evil that way, they said. There are night-demons and evil spirits with ice for hands. Be sure to close your windows so they can’t get in. You’ll hear sounds in the night like icebergs colliding. That is the sound the evil spirits make when they dance in time to your fear.

For many months I listened. Go home, make dinner, make tea, watch TV, brush teeth, close windows… And the next day and the day after that.

I grew restless. I dreamed of change and sometimes even chaos.

One day I fell ill, so ill that I was bound to forgetfulness and fevered neglect. I woke just before daybreak from the blood gone cold and slow in my veins. I’d been dreaming that I was lying on Antarctica, naked. The ice beneath me was shaking violently. Out on the horizon icebergs were breaking apart and the sea was rising all around me. I feared for my life, I feared for the ice crashing into my body.

That was the only real danger, though. I’d seen with my own eyes the sound my fear makes. I woke so cold I could see my breath in the air. I looked out at the sky, unfiltered by glass, unfiltered and convulsing with the weight of the morning and the cold, cold desert light.
