A produtora Toplink anunciou shows de duas grandes bandas de heavy metal, Iced Earth e Epica, vão tocar no país no começo de 2010.

Os holandeses do Epica realizaram quatro shows no país, começando em Curitiba no dia 7 no Master Hall, depois tocam no dia 9/4 em Belo Horizonte no Musica Hall, no dia 10/4 em São Paulo na Via Funchal, a banda da talentosa vocalista Simone Simons termina a turnê no dia 11/4 tocando no Rio de Janeiro no Circo Voador.

Já os americanos do Iced Earth se apresentam pela primeira vez no país, realizando um sonho antigo dos fãs, por enquanto a banda só tem um show marcado em São Paulo no dia 6 de fevereiro, na Via Funchal. O grupo está divulgando o seu álbum mais recente, “The Crucible of Man: Something Wicked Part 2”, lançado ano passado e que trouxe de volta o vocalista Matthew Barlow, que fez parte da banda entre 1992 2003 e voltou ao grupo em 2007.

I searched online for Myanmar metal stuff last night and found a forum. With great expectations, I clicked on the link.

What I found?

They were talking about… nu-metal??? Yes, nu-metal. Frigging hell mallcore stuff like Slipknot and Marilyn Manson. There were even people who mentioned Linkin Park and Flyleaf.

Seriously! There was nothing on it but mallcore. -.-

Next one was a blog. He was talking about Slipknot and how much he likes them and on another blog was an article on Myanmar metal scene and the author was talking about Bullet For My Valentine, Avenged Sevenfold and Trivium. Frigging Metalcore.

There were even some people who said,”Slipknot is Death Metal”. Ya, go die. It pisses me off when I hear people saying crap like that.

Days of Purgatory is a compilation featuring many songs from Iced Earth’s early career that were re-recorded in order to have definitive versions featuring Matthew Barlow on vocals (who joined in 1994).

It was the very first Iced Earth album I ever purchased and I did it because it was recommended to me as a starting point for the band. Iced Earth was a name I kept coming across online as a great metal band and I wanted to sample them. Despite this album’s purpose to be showcase for Barlow’s vocals, it’s his vocals that have deterred me from ever becoming an Iced Earth fan. I just don’t like his sound.

I bought this album in either December ‘98 or ‘99 and I remember listening to it with a friend and we both remarked how some of the music was really cool (“Angels Holocaust” especially) but the vocals were holding it back. Truth be told, looking back, even some of the music isn’t up to snuff for me but there are a few great thrash moments.

I’ve always loved the cover though. It features the comic book character and vampire goddess Purgatori with art provided by the late Steven Hughes.

A two-disc edition was released at the same time. Too bad I didn’t know anything about it when I bought this one disc version!

2 subgenres in particular, power metal & viking metal.  viking metal is self-explanatory, and power metal is basically the child of thrash and speed metal, infused with lyrical obsession of all things that got you beat up in high school:  dungeons & dragons, lord of the rings (before it was cool), fantasy novels, and the like, sung typically very highly (i.e. “ahhhhhhhhAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!”).  power metal has been around for a while, but got a little bit of mainstream attention with the success (relatively speaking, they’re far from platinum!) of dragonforce, based highly on their being featured in guitar hero.  dragonforce get some flack from the hardcore fanbase of the scene, they’ve been called “nintendo metal” based on the video game sound of their guitars & keyboards, but i think they pwn.  then again, metal is not my passion, so perhaps that’s why  either way, here’s a hilarious yet awesome (3 words that go together very well when talking about power metal videos & lyrics) video, “operation ground & pound”.

onto the viking metal!  this subgenre has its roots in the same place as black metal, not only in that both come from the same regional area (scandinavia) but both are credited with having their beginning with the band bathory.  the band’s 1990 album hammerheart was the first viking metal record.  viking metal ranges in sound much more, as the common basis for the bands isn’t the sound or style but lyrical topics that focus on norse mythology & the viking age.  and now we get to celebrate with 5 videos that do thor proud.  beginning with, from the faroe islands…

Okay since I am going in about Myanmar Metal scene and all that stuff, I think I should list up some metal genres and bands I listen to.

I like Melodeath, Thrash, Power, Death, Black, Progressive, Speed, Symphonic, Gothic, Traditional Heavy, and even Metalcore… well almost all metal genres. And I am big fan of Children of Bodom, Judas Priest and Metallica. I also like Iced Earth, Dimmu Borgir, Behemoth, Iron Maiden, Kamelot, Vanishing Point, DragonForce, Cannibal Corpse, Apocalyptica, Black Sabbath, Dream Theater, Opeth, Kreator, Arch Enemy, Amon Amarth, Nightwish, Exodus, Megadeth, Slayer, and so on. As for -core, As I Lay Dying, Trivium, Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall and I Killed the Prom Queen. Okay enough for the list. Let’s get to the point.

Metal scene in Myanmar…

To say the truth, whenever I think of it, it makes me frown.

Well, I’ll say an example. There are ten metal fans from Myanmar. Among those ten, five have only listened to nu-metal and -core bands and have never heard of bands like Iron Maiden. (You can refer to those “metal fans” as “so-called”s if you want).

If you meet someone in Myanmar who claims to like metal, ask him what he listens to. Most likely, he will begin talks about Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet For My Valentine, Slipknot and/or Marilyn Manson. I’ve met some dudes who say,”Slipknot is Death Metal, so heavy!!!” and I was like “WTF was that!???”. When I show them Iron Maiden, they gave me something like “Is this even metal?”. There are also some people who say,”Metallica ain’t good. They ain’t heavy. blah blah blah”. If they want to listen to all that screaming, go listen to screamo.

Also, they are some people who’ve only listened to Slipknot and Marilyn Manson and think they’ve listened to true metal. And they blabber stuff like,”Metal is just screaming out and they don’t need to care about lyrics, blah blah blah.” Imagine how much I got pissed off. Metal is one of the music genres which has various and really lyrical themes. The themes range from Religion, Mythology, Philosophy, Politics to Society, Personal Struggles, Suffering and Love. There are also loads of concept albums (e.g-Kamelot’s Epica, Black Halo, Iced Earth’s Something Wicked Saga).

And another thing, metal isn’t all about being heavy. Try listening to bands like Vanishing Point, Kamelot, Nightwish, etc. Also, there are ballads like The Unforgiven, The Unforgiven II, etc by Metallica and A Tout Le Monde by Megadeth. What I want to say is,”Don’t blabber if you really haven’t listened to metal.”

One more thing, metal fanbase here still isn’t really big and mostly those “metalheads” listen to nu and -core. I used to like nu-metal. But I stopped listening to it, once I got in touch with Melodeath, Thrash, Power, Death, etc. Try it out. Compare nu to other metal genres. There, you will see the difference.

As for Metalcore, I still listen to it. I enjoy listening to bands like As I Lay Dying, Killswitch Engage, I Killed the Prom Queen, etc. I used to be a big fan of Bullet For My Valentine. Even now, I listen to some of their songs. What I want to say here is just because they’ve listened to those -core bands, they act like they’ve listened to true metal. Some don’t even know AILD or KSE.

This shouldn’t happen.

To all those “so-called” “metalheads” in Myanmar, if you really like metal, explore! Go in depths! Don’t just stop with nu or -core. The bad thing here is, you can’t buy much metal CDs. About half of the albums I have were downloaded.

The underground metal bands here mostly play metalcore. Well, I like All Else I Fail and Last Day of Beethoven for metalcore. For other metal genres, I’d list Yakkhadeva, Architect of Misery and Book of Death. I also wish I could see more underground metal bands that create other metal genres than metalcore.

I guess, Metal scene in Myanmar will take some time to become like Hip Hop or Punk scenes which are currently growing rapidly.

That’s right, you can’t! It’s common knowledge that violent video games, Jack Black, and metal are three of the most awesome things on the planet. Here they have been combined – it’s Jack Black’s Violent Metal Video Game, or Brütal Legend. This game, designed by the legendary Tim Schafer, is going to be epic. Just look at the insane soundtrack.

Yeah, that’s right. The first two songs on the list are the best songs by 3 Inches Of Blood, “Deadly Sinners” and “Destroy The Orcs”. I’m sold already. Take a look at just some of the bands on the list – Black Sabbath, Candlemass, Carcass, Enslaved, Iced Earth, In Flames (and not the new stuff, it’s “Goliaths Disarm Their Davids” from Black-Ash Inheritance), Judas Priest, King Diamond, Mastodon, Megadeth, Motorhead, Ozzy Osbourne, Saxon, Slayer, and of course Tenacious D. This is ridiculously good. When I first saw the list I thought it was fake because it looked to good to be true. But nope, it’s official. Add in the fact that Lemmy, Ozzy, Halford, and Lita Ford will actually make apperances in the game and you’ve got yourself the most metal video game ever.

Decenas de jóvenes se dieron cita el pasado 25 de julio en la arena Adolfo López Mateos de Tlalnepantla para escuchar la potente voz de “Ripper”interpretando los temas clásicos de Judas Priest como ‘Breaking the law’ y ‘The Ripper’.

Las Bandas Nacionales de Metal Vulgar Adiction y Overdeath, entre otras, se encargaron de encender los motores de la audiencia que ansiosa esperaba el arrivo de Owens.

Concept albums are tricky, risky, and totally awesome when done correctly.  Many bands try to pump out at least one, but 99% of the time they end up with a product that isn’t worth a fanny tidying.  Luckily for you all, I have chosen a band that has mastered the art of concept album creation.  Their anthology is riddled with many different stories that keep the listener enthralled in the music, while rupturing his/her circulatory system simultaneously.  Let’s have a listen, shall we.

Iced Earth: Violate

With such great titles as The Dark Saga, Something Wicked This Way Comes, Burnt Offerings and Horror Show, it’s easy to see that these dudes don’t fuck around (at least they don’t when singer Matt Barlow is with them.  I’m not a “Ripper” fan, at all).

Few bands that have gone the way of an epic story-based CD ever manage to bank on it.  They stray from the musical formula that made them successful, pour a ton of cash into “a great idea”, then act as if they can do no wrong.  Little do they know, us fans are the true critics.  WE buy the shit, WE listen to the shit, so WE have the right to profess our hatred of the shit to the world.  The one band that deserves a “YOU FUCKED UP!” award is ManOwaR.  I might have an aneurysm if I rant about what they did to get me so mad, so it would be in your best interest to check it out for yourselves.

May your day be filled of dramatic vocals, wailing guitar riffs, and powder-kegs of fantasticness.

Alive in Athens é um álbum triplo da banda Iced Earth. Ele foi gravado ao vivo nas noites de 23 e 24 de Janeiro de 1999, com uma platéia de cerca de 2 mil pessoas (em cada noite) no Rodon Club em Atenas, Grécia. A banda estava na turnê do álbum Something Wicked This Way Comes. O show foi lançado como um único DVD em Outubro de 2006. Este show marca o retorno do ex-baterista Brent Smedley, que não havia participado da turnê do álbum anterior da banda.
O show também ficou conhecido por, no final da música “Violate”, a banda tocar de surpresa os riffs de abertura da música “The Trooper”, da banda Iron Maiden.

The Crucible of Man é o décimo álbum de estúdio da banda norte-americana Iced Earth, sendo o segundo álbum da saga Something Wicked. A primeira parte, Framing Armageddon, foi lançado em setembro de 2007. O álbum marca o retorno do vocalista Matthew Barlow ao Iced Earth.

Framing Armageddon é o oitavo álbum da banda norte-americana Iced Earth.
Depois de quase uma década, Jon Schaffer resolveu desenvolver a história de “Something Wicked”, a canção dividida em três partes que encerrava o clássico “Something Wicked This Way Comes” .Assim, em 2007 é lançado o álbum “Framing Armageddon” , o primeiro composto para a voz de Tim “Ripper” Owens, já que “The Glorious Burden” foi feito originalmente para ser cantado por Matthew Barlow.

The Glorious Burden é o sétimo álbum de estúdio da banda norte-americana Iced Earth. É um álbum conceitual, explora vários momentos da história militar americana, passando pela Declaração de Independência até a Guerra Civil Americana. Outros eventos como a Primeira Guerra Mundial e os atentados de 11 de Setembro, também são lembrados.
Este álbum é o primeiro com o vocalista Tim “Ripper” Owens, que havia deixado o Judas Priest entrando no lugar de Matthew Barlow.
