As if our trip to Seattle last Sunday wasn’t already packed full of fun activities, we decided

As if our trip to Seattle last Sunday wasn’t already packed full of fun activities, we decided to check out the Emp/Science Fiction Museum. I had heard they were having 2 special exhibits this month, Icons of Science Fiction and Can’t Look Away: The Lure of Horror Films. My mom’s friends’ daughter and I decided that being the nerds that we are we couldn’t end the day without a trip through these awesome exhibits. Our mom’s not being the horror or science fiction nerds we are headed out to look for bookstores to browse.

Unfortunately, you can no longer just buy a ticket for the science fiction museum. They have combined the museum with the Experience Music Project so we had to buy tickets for the whole thing. In the end it worked out since we discovered they had a Nirvana exhibition going on in the emp. As we walked into the emp the first exhibition we came across was for the science fiction movie, Avatar. They had a bunch of the props and sketches, as well as examples of how they used cutting edge technology int the movie.

Avatar: The Exhibition

Can’t Look Away: The Lure of Horror Film

When we came out of the Avatar exhibition we saw a sign for the horror movie exhibition. The sign led us to a staircase bathed in red light with walls covered in images of people’s screaming faces leading down. We excitedly headed down toward the Can’t Look Away exhibit. The exhibit features horror films selected by directors Roger Corman, John Landis, and Eli Roth. It also has an amazing selection of iconic horror movie props. I got to come face-to-face with some of the creatures that have haunted my nightmares since childhood! This was a really awesome exhibit.

Wall of screaming faces leading the way down to the exhibit.

The exhibit is divided up by these spiderweb black walls. Each room has different horror films playing. It was eerily quiet with only the sounds of creepy music and the occasional scream ringing out.

One of the critter creatures from the Critter franchise. This little creature was the first to grace my nightmares as a young child. It gave me chills up and down my spine being this close to it even now.

Jason’s mask and machete from Friday the 13th.

Icons of Science Fiction

After coming face-to-face with some of my childhood nightmares we continued on in our pursuit for the Icons of Science Fiction exhibit. It happened to be right next door to the horror film exhibit. I was a little disappointed in the size of this exhibit. It seemed kind of small, but it still had a lot of awesome props. I even got to see the main item I came for: a freaking Dalek from Dr. Who! I love Dr. Who and when I heard they were going to have a prop from the show in Seattle I knew I had to go.

Lots of interesting guns from different science fiction movies. The second one down is from one of the Alien movies.

So awesome! The skull used in Terminator 2:Judgement Day. Really creepy up close.

And finally, the Dalek! Made from wood this was the Imperial Dalek from the Doctor Who Episode “Remembrance of the Daleks.“

Me nerding out with the Dalek.

Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses

While we were at the EMP we decided to head upstairs to check out the Nirvana exhibit that everyone said was so amazing. Growing up in the ’90s Nirvana was a huge part of my adolescents. I remember when the news came out that Kurt Cobain had decided to end his own life. My friend, her brother and I sat in front of the television in shock. His music spoke to a whole generation of kids who had till that time no voice. I really believe that the ’90s grunge and riot girl scene gave way to a magical time in music. It was really awesome to get to walk through this exhibit and see items from the this amazing band.

Pictures from when Kurt Cobain played at The Evergreen State College in 1988. Being a graduate from there these pictures were pretty awesome to get to see.
