Book club no.31 took place yesterday at Flemming’s place in Fulham. A small but perfectly formed group of Flemming, Pete, Andy and Camilla dined on roast duck, roast potatoes and red cabbage and found time between delicious mouthfuls to discuss Art Spiegelman’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “The Complete Maus”, the first graphic novel the book club has considered.

The issue of the relationship between words and pictures, and how a graphic novel can represent the action normally found in a literary novel – let alone something as complex as the Holocaust – was the focus of our discussion. Camilla kicked off a close ‘reading’ of Spiegelman’s pictures by noting how the mice – representing the Jews – do not have mouths except in images of them in pain, and how this suggested their essential ‘voicelessness’. The group discussed the use of different animals to represent the different nationalities and to what extend this was a successful or distracting conceit.

Andy’s interest was in the use of time and how the format of the comic allowed the representation of time to be more fluid, so the narration could flit back and forth between the 1940s and 1980s in a way that, he felt, would have been much harder for a literary novel to achieve.

Pete highlighted how the portrayal of a Jewish father from that generation mirrorred similar stories by other Jewish writers, including memoirs by Philip Roth. Flemming pointed out that the book’s long gestation period (it was written while the author’s father was alive but not published till after his death) suggests Spiegelman struggled to escape his father’s presence. Pete noted the Freudian resonances that echoed throughout the book. Andy – as is required in every book club – discussed the presence of the mouse’s ego, superego and id in the narrative.

The group also discussed whether the book demeaned or suitably comemmorated Holocaust victims, whether it worked as fiction or biography, the effect of using real photos at different points in the book, the reason for the absence of the mother’s suicide, and the impact of the ‘interchapter’ of Spiegelman’s previous comic.

Overall, prejudices about graphic novels were successfully challenged and the group agreed that the experience of reading “Maus” had been overwhelmingly positive.

4. Setelah selesai klik ‘Save Draft’ untuk menyimpan halaman sementara atau klik ‘Publish’ untuk mepublikasikan/menampilkan halaman anda pada blog agar bisa dilihat pengunjung.

Hace unos días leí un artículo en donde enterraban algunos mitos médicos y uno de ellos era este:

“No se ha encontrado evidencia científica que avale que sólo utilizamos un 10% de nuestro cerebro. No existe ninguna área del cerebro inactiva. Como sucede con los músculos, utilizamos las regiones del cerebro según la actividad que se desempeñe. Cuanta mayor complejidad, mayor uso. Nunca se utiliza el 100% del cerebro simultáneamente. De hecho, sólo en grandes ataques epilépticos puede llegar a utilizarse toda la capacidad del cerebro al unísono. Tal vez este bulo se tejió cuando se afirmó que se utiliza el 10% del cerebro de forma consciente, mientras que el 90% restante se hace inconscientemente.”

Siento que hago con vosotros mis queridos lectores un poco de terapia en voz alta. Espero que me comprendáis; porque sí eso que acabamos de leer es cierto me lleva a la siguiente pregunta: ¿qué c*** somos? Vale que muchas de esas actividades inconscientes sean aquellas que tienen que ver con mantener nuestra respiración, el parpadeo de nuestra mirada, mantener la temperatura de nuestro cuerpo constante y un sin fin de ordenes más. Pero que solamente el 10% de nuestro cerebro sea nuestra parte consciente eso, yo no sé, pero a mí personalmente me da mucho yu-yu.

No me deja tranquilo que mi yo consciente sea un 10% de mi cerebro, lo vuelvo a repetir y es que quizás de ahí luego vienen los sueños esos tan raros que tenemos. La verdad es que durante el día obtenemos mucha información, información que luego tiene que procesar nuestro cerebro, mientras que ese 10% de la poca consciencia que tenemos se duerme y desaparece. Quizás porque el cerebro requiere de todo el espacio disponible y toda la fuerza necesaria para poder digerir esa información.

Pero volviendo a la inquietud del asunto, sigo diciendo y es verdad, que me da miedo pensar que solamente seamos ese 10% es por ello es que cada día lucho más conmigo mismo para conocerme mejor y subir ese porcentaje lo máximo que pueda. Por eso me compro esa clase de libros que me compro y por ello escribo estas cosas.

Cash for Grades?

That controversial “cash for grades” fund raiser at a North Carolina middle school didn’t last too long.

After the scheme to award extra points on tests for $20 appeared in the Raleigh News & Observer, Wayne County district officials today killed the Rosewood Middle School fund raiser.

As easy as it is to mock this school district (what were they thinking?!), my daughters’ schools used to do the same thing, albeit with a middleman of sorts. They would get bonus points for bringing in various things such as supplies for the school. It wasn’t a direct cash payment, but my wallet couldn’t tell the difference.

Chinese researchers find that abortion results in 17% increased risk of breast cancer – anyone seen any counterpoints to this?  I know the breast cancer link debate is controversial, with each side thinking it has trump-card studies.

PZ Myers has such poor critical thinking skills when it comes to God and morality.  He rants at length as to why there is no such thing as true morality, but like most people positing that he can’t go a paragraph without a moral claim.  He definitely thinks intolerance is wrong.  I tend to agree, if one properly understands the classic definition of the word, but my claim would be consistent with my worldview while his is self-mockery.

Notice his outrage over Christians labeling homosexual behavior as a sin. Well, if there is no real morality saying it is sinful then there is also no real morality saying that it is wrong to call it a sin. He has 0.00 reasons to criticize the morality of Christians.  It is so ironic that they can’t see their hypocrisy.  What a delusional self-parody.  Methinks he doth protest too much.

My beloved Andrew sent me a link to Burberry — Art of the Trench. While most of the images on the site are snapped by The Sartorialist Scott Schuman or iD photgraphers Sean and Seng, anybody can submit pictures of their pals in a Burberry trench coat.

It was a beautiful day yesterday, and we immediately ran out into the street to start snapping pictures of ourselves in our Nova Check-lined coats. The above image is an outtake on account of my crazy hair. I’ll let you know if we ever get around to sending them in.

And an added bit of trivia: Schuman was in the trenches in Toronto, with pictures of MTV Canada’s Dan Levy and Much Music’sSarah Taylor appearing on the site! It is my lifelong desire to appear on The Sartorialist site. One day, I tells ya!

The conventional wisdom is that Charles Darwin was a Christian whose scientific discoveries led him away from God.  But does the evidence support that view? From Theist, Agnostic, Atheist: Will the Real Charles Darwin Please Stand Up?:

Some , like Alberto Kornblihtt, rather naively claim, “Darwin believed in God and his body is buried in Westminster Abbey.”  The standard rendering of Charles Darwin’s faith, however, is that it was a slow imperceptible slide into unbelief. On that we have Darwin’s own word. On religious matters he said, “I found it more and more difficult, with free scope given to my imagination, to invent evidence which would suffice to convinced me. Thus disbelief crept over me at a very slow rate, but was at last complete. The rate was so slow that I felt no distress.”

But if you read Darwin’s earlier writings you’ll discover that the statement in bold is almost certainly and deliberately false.

This received canon notwithstanding, others are less convinced. Stanley Jaki has noted: “The publication in full of Darwin’s Early Notebooks forces one to conclude that in writing his Autobiography Darwin consciously lied when he claimed that he slowly, unconsciously slipped into agnosticism. He tried to protect his own family as well as the Victorian public from the shock of discovering that his Notebooks resounded with militant materialism. The chief target of the Notebooks is man’s mind, the ‘citadel,’ in Darwin’s words, which was to be conquered by his evolutionary theory if its materialism were to be victorious.”

Go read the whole article.  It is quite compelling.

Is Darwinian evolution compatible with theism? It surley was never intended to be and certainly never intended to be compatible with Christianity, though Darwin was more than willing to enlist religious allies on its behalf.

So Darwin’s cagey religious minimalism would almost surely have stumped everyone on “To Tell the Truth.” Depending on the question he could appear weakly agnostic or even theistic at times. It is only after looking carefully at his private notebooks and matching his early experiences with his later writings that a coherent pattern emerges. Once identified as an undogmatic atheist or an agnostic atheist the real Charles Darwin can then stand up.

Even in Darwin’s day Liberal “Christians” rushed to support his views.  Darwin wanted his theory advanced by all means, so he accepted the support even while disbelieving in theistic evolution.

Once the theory was accepted,” Wiker adds, “the theistic patina would be ground away by the hard, anti-theistic core of the argument.

Go see the movie Expelled! and note how the Darwinists are still treating Liberal Christians as useful idiots in advancing their worldview.

Whether Darwin was honest about the impact of his religious views on his science is irrelevant as to whether the evidence supports his overall theory (it doesn’t).  But it is useful to explode the myths perpetuated by false teachers who would rather preach on Darwin than Jesus. 

While Darwinism doesn’t require atheism, atheism does require Darwinism.  That is why the New Atheists defend the Darwinian dogma with a ferocity that would make a stereotypical fundie Christian blush.

I would love to see religion and the debate of religions brought into our schools.  The Christians want their Creationism/Intelligent Design taught in schools but those ideas where thrown our of court for obvious reasons.  This debate is a great one to watch and I do hope that we have many more of these types of debate in our society.  This is something that will advance the freedom of thought and expose the lies we often hear from the “moral” side.

So, lets allow the discussion of religion in our schools.  Lets teach religious history that will cover the Gods from the beginning of civilization to our present day.  Lets discuss the what they all believed, that none of them managed to prove there Gods were real but it didn’t stop them from making claims.

Lets compare the religions and Gods through time to ensure our children understand how the ideas of God evolved and how much of one God was shared with the Gods that came after them.  For instance, Jesus shares many of the same concepts of Gods that came before him.  Gods like Mithra, Horus and others came before Christ and the many traits of Christ and characteristics of Christianity just so happen to be similar or at times exactly like those of Christ.

Imagine, our children being allowed to debate religion.  Allowed to debate it and then have debate teams meet across the nation that could result in a national level debate by our youth.  A great way to get to the truth, if you ask me.

Notice, Christians are not interested in debating religion or having our kids study the history of religion in our schools.  Many of the Christian parents would be outraged if this was to take place.  Why?  Because they don’t want their children to think for themselves with regard to God.  They know their kids will start to question, want things explained and that in the end it would lead to many of them realizing what is true.

What is true is that none of the many Gods or the many variations of the same Gods are likely true.  They are all likely only the creation of men that are insecure and require some type of superstition just to get through life.
