So i really went in the end! Despite knowing that none of my classmates will turn up, i decided to go for BarCamp after some persuasion from Sean that his classmates won’t eat me up. I was behaving like a paranoid kid on tiresome Friday night. To go or not to go? i couldn’t decide.

After 1/2 hr of trying to convince me that i should come and its okay to tag along

Sean: “Okay, Why do you want to go?”

Me: “I find it interesting, and i wna learn . . . “

Sean: “Yes, then you must come! or else you’ll surely regret”

Thank God (and Sean) i went.

I don’t know when was the last time i had to wake up at 6am on a Saturday morning but it was commendable that i could make it there with my eyes barely open the entire time.

Venue was at IDA which i thought was rather small but that will do.  i really think that the small holding area has its advantage too. it forces people to interact because with such close proximity and invasion of personal space you cant possibly avoid any form of eye contact or room for conversation! Isn’t this one major point of Barcamp? Meeting new people and engaging in interesting coversations.

Despite us being early, the place was already quite crowded by the time we reach. And i must say, it was quite intimidating for all of us. We were surrounded by prominent people from the social media scene. Famous bloggers, twitters and basically people who are passionate about social media.

Oh. And we were easily recognized and famously known as “Sp Students” and “Ping Kwa’s Students” by people from BarCamp. hehehe

Everyone was moving around the room and socializing regardless of age and colour. I really like the idea of Barcamp and the whole concept of sharing because it brings learning to a whole new level. At Barcamp, everyone is a presenter and everyone has a right to speak.

There were 6 rooms with different talks and discussion topics going on at the same time and you are fee to leave the rooms if it doesn’t interest you! Free slots allows people to vote for their desired topics proposed by other presenters.

How to pose like a korean star?

Albeit it being one of the most random discussions, it is quite interesting and both the presenter and photographer are humorous people. He showed us this website which has 28 poses that are most commonly used by Koreans. And i thought it was pretty true. Those poses are basically common in Asia and throughout the entire presentation, Sean couldn’t resist himself doing those poses.

it was a really inspiring session with him talking about how he quitted his job a few years ago to be professionally broke and the experiences he had helping other people with no cash and sponsors backing him up. He used technology, particularly Twitter to organise Tweetups – a simple gathering to eat on the streets and to raise donations of any amount. A great idea of using his tehnological skills for a good cause. You can read about their projects from http://www.insearchofsanuk.com/. Am really touched by their spirit of giving and how selfless people can be, dedicating their life and hardwork to the community and people who needs help.

Another article written in todays Irish independent backs up the flexibility of the workforce the flexinbility of the workforce that Greg Bentley Spoke about.

Firms will emerge from the recession with a smaller core workforce but more staff on “flexi” arrangements, a leading business group has predicted.

The CBI said a more flexible workforce was one of a number of areas where “fresh approaches” will develop because of the economic downturn.

More financing options will be developed, firms will seek to improve “corporate citizenship” to help attract and keep customers and staff, and companies will re-examine their relationship with suppliers and other organisations such as universities, according to the CBI.

Director general Richard Lambert said: “We may be at the start of a new era for businesses, in which attitudes to finance and to corporate leadership are changed for a generation by the shock of the past two years.

“What we now need is a more balanced, less risky pathway to growth, one in which the short-term returns may be lower, but the long-term rewards for management success will be a lot more sustainable and secure.

“Firms looking to reduce risk and acknowledge their interdependence are seeking more collaborative ways of working through partnerships and joint ventures. Perhaps we will see a flourishing of supply chain finance – in which firms with the largest, most solid balance sheets help finance their smaller suppliers or customers.”

The report was published ahead of the CBI annual conference in London.

Och nu sku ja ha lust att köpa en massa accessoarer i pink (hade inte trott att jag sku säga detdär). Bara för att d sku bli så fiiint! Men jag tror jag sparar mina pengar, och står över istället.

Fast jag såg en superkiva liten fest-väska på lindex, och en schal på seppälä… Ja, drömma får man ju.

barcampsg4 was awesome. held at IDA on an early saturday morning, i really had to drag myself down to their office, as i had only 3hours of sleep on a rocking friday night, haha. anyways, it was a worthwhile experience, as it really redefines learning.

what is good about barcamp is that there is no real issue. anything and everything can be discussed there. they got discussions ranging from inspirational ones, like 'How to be broke and change the world', self improving talks like 'Personal Improvement(i think) aka how to be more badass'. another plus point is that, the un-convention is held for the audience, for everyone. in a sense that supposing you are not learning or get interested in the topic of the talk, you are free to leave at anytime.

a truly inspiring talk by Dwight. he quit his job to be a professional broke. but still find ways to change the world, through charity. they are based in bangkok, and came all the way to singapore just to share their experience at barcampsg4. he really redefined events management. he didnt have any sponsor, no budget (as in no money) and still is able to change the lives of the people in need. with the help of his sidekick, cody of course.

in my view, this is the next big thing in singapore. hackerspace is a place to let you discover, invent, experiment, blablabla whatever you want, and they serve as a platform for your success. they provide you the space, resources, and contacts for you to build/create/improvise on a product. for more info, just go to their webbie @ http://hackerspace.sg
they just got a space at 70A Bussorah Street, but personally, i think its quite small. but its a great start for them! i applaud their idea. Justin said that it took them 2months for the conceptualisation of the idea to implementing the idea. thats crazy fast!

i had a good lol in this one. the person who presented, coleman yee aka @metacole obviously prepared for this talk and has a great sense of humour. he used funny analogy that we can relate to, which is great! the three steps to <topic> is to

1. watch the knowledge of curse
2. use analogy
3. oversimplify first

he used AND and OR operator for the analogy part. and its freaking funny.

this is quite the learning experience as we failed, really hard. but the route to success, is to fail. so i guess we are on the right track.

Design thinking and how to find true love

another great talk by metacole. i think he's one of the coolest guy in barcamp. he actually wanted to name it 'Design thinking and how to get laid', but had to tone it down to be more NC-16 rather than an R-rated. haha. he used an analogy to illustrate the four steps of design thinking, namely Define, Diverge, Converge and Implement by using how to get a laid, oh not laid, but married. haha!

Your film sucks!

a talk by chris gomez, aka @chrisgomez, he tells us how to improve our film. he revealed a really good information : history is always new. which is true. oh, and some of us, the DMC people will be working with him to create some video in the near future. and prolly we will attend filmcampsg next year, which is the equivalent for barcampsg, for film.

twitter rules barcamp – everyone is a pro at multitasking, and can listen and tweet at the same time. so even if i didnt attend to some of the talks, i get info too, via twitter. and someone misplaced his/her phone, and tweeted about it, and wala~ he/she got back his phone. thanks twitter!

iphone/ipod touch rules barcamp – everyone whips out their iphone/ipod touch to tweet like crazy. there's even a Hiphone charging station, to charge your iphone/ipod touch. great great idea.

wireless@sg is a lifesaver – its faster than IDA's provided wlan for barcampsg

This warm little fuzzy number prompted us to dig back into the year to pull out her album for another listen. It’s very well written and sombre, yet not drab. Have a listen.

Lördagen var inprickad som en ledig dag i min kalender. Ibland behöver jag få komma bort hemifrån för att riktigt kunna koppla av. Och igår ställde Natte upp som hjälp i det. Vi for iväg till hesa och fick höra att ett kortspel är för gammalt för att kunna köpa ur butiken… Men det bästa med dagen var nog PlayMe på svenska teatern.

Det var väldigt länge sen jag varit på professionell teater sist och söööööta vad jag njöt. Och hela upplevelsen blev bara bättre då jag kunde snacka diverse “hur-har-dom-gjort” och “bakom kulisserna” grejer med Natte. Hur kul som helst att höra diverse tekniska detaljer och även grejer som dom ändrat på i pjäsen.. Och det underbara med proffsteater: En skådis va tydligen sjuk, men jag skulle inte ha märkt att nån fattades om inte Natte skulle ha berättat det.

Och det bästa av allt va ju att vi gick på scenen sen efter föreställningen och kollade på diverse scenografiska lösningar. Vilken Lycka för en liten Ida att få stå på snurrscenen medan den snurrar!

Under pausen blev d typist flippas a’la gamla teamkompisar Och vi bongade några bekanta nere i publiken. Underbara ankdamm..

Här leker vi typiska finlandssvenskar som går på svenska teaattää och tror sig vara bättre än alla för de boo i helsingfoss.

REPORT IN ENGLISH

In recent years, a new-fangled movement has bubbled up from underground music circles, one cringingly described as “freak folk.” Think Joanna Newsom. Devendra Banhart. Countless jug bands of varying degrees of talent.

When I could conceivably still be called a “kid,” everyone who played music played in a punk or indie-rock band. When I got old and was living in Eugene, Oregon, the kids didn’t play punk, but “old-timey” music. The boys wore hobo fashion that hadn’t been seen since the 20s. The girls wore what looked to be uncomfortable dresses and petticoats. Indie-rock stars began to release country albums. Suddenly it was cool to be a redneck. I finally felt authentic.

It was odd. I’ve been a fan of pre-war blues and country since I was 13 and the Robert Johnson box set was released (admittedly, I bought it because Jimmy Page blurbed it). The music to come out of this gathering (don’t you just hate “movements”?) is great. What’s tripped me out has been the hipsterization of music that, to any Southerner or Appalachian, is as natural as fried chicken for Sunday supper. That, and the fetish-izing of authenticity and poverty (I will only say this — John Fahey — if there was ever a freak in the folk scene, it was he — had a field day with just this sort of thing in the 50s and 60s).

I guess what I’m saying is that I’m torn about all of this. I love the music. I hate the hipsters.

One thing I’m not torn about is what this has meant for Michael Hurley. If there was ever a musician who deserved the larger attention that he has begun to garner, it is Hurley (or Snock, as he is sometimes known).

Hurley’s career is the stuff of legends, and harkens back to the near mythological pre-war blues artists he so frequently adapts and updates. He has a birth date that is often prefixed by “reportedly” or “circa.” He’s lived all over the country, drifting here then there, living and playing in one area before moving on to the next. In 1965, Hurley made his first recording for the Smithsonian Folkways label, using the same microphone that Leadbelly used to make his last record.

In the 40+ years since that record, Hurley has managed to fly just under the radar, largely avoiding the spotlight and commercial success that so often destroys or warps artists, all while managing to record the kind of music he wants to record without having to conform to anyone’s pre-conceived notion of what Michael Hurley music is supposed to sound like. What has emerged is a solid body of sound, one as easily rooted in the 78 recordings of Blind Blake and Papa Charlie Murphy as it is in the more modern Country and Western of Juice Newton and Tom T. Hall.

Staying true to his vision has begun to pay off. Artists as different as Lucinda Williams, Taj Mahal, Sun Volt, and Cat Power have either covered his songs or toured with him. A few years back, NPR ran a story. Kids in black clothes and aesthetically messy hair began turning up at shows looking bored. As Hurley said about his recent popularity on the festival circuit, “Whenever they have one, they have to have their grandfather with them, which is good for me, because my peers aren’t going to come out that night anyway.”

Ida Con Snock is the latest addition to Hurley’s already sizable discography, and it is one of his best in recent years. As the title suggest, Hurley teamed up with Ida, who provide the most solid accompaniment I’ve heard on a Hurley album since Weatherhole. Each song, whether updates of Hurley classics like “Hog of the Forsaken” and “Wildgeeses,” or covers of 30s swing standards like “Ragg Mopp,” paints a perfectly balanced sonic landscape, one where Hurley’s now gruff voice and finger-picked guitar blends with Ida’s subtle use of feedback and understated singing.

The result is an album that both sounds like Michael Hurley, yet sounds completely new.

For those well versed in the Snock, this will be a welcome addition, one that will reintroduce you to a few favorites, to some new songs, and to a few that have become staples of Hurley’s live shows. For those just checking him out, Ida Con Snock offers the easiest and perhaps most accessible entry point. Unlike 2007’s Ancestral Swamp, which was largely recorded by Hurley at his home, (and thus has a very homemade feel), ICS was recorded at Levon Helms’ studio in Woodstock, New York. That extra care has lead to a more polished (without being slick) and coherent recording.

The lyrical content continues to be pure Hurley, a mixture of the personal, the humorous, and the sad, a universe where the dividing line between the animal and human kingdoms is as artificial as our self-imposed limits on the imagination. For me, the standout track on ICS has to be the new rendering of “Wildgeeses,” one of the most beautiful and honest love songs I’ve ever heard.

If you’re burnt out on the hip posturing and gimmicks that seem to be so much a part of music these days, give Michael Hurley a chance. He has been known to soften even the hardest of hearts.

Äntligen är fredagen med ALIVE här!

Förberedelserna har varit på gångs en längre tid, och nästan varje dag denna vecka har någon grupp samlats för att förbereda nåt.

Jag har packat med alla mina svarta tepaitor, egna dramakläder, allmöjlit för hår o smink och en hel andra grejer.

Försäkerhets skull tar jag på mig en röd huppare. Vet dock inte ännu om den kommer att uppfylla sitt syfte eller inte. Men bättre att vara förberedd!

Det kommer att vara konstigt att ha Alive utan Amelie och Kenneth. Det kommer nog att gå bra. Börjar inse hur Amelie kände sej förra veckan då jag låg hemma hela veckan. Det är annorlunda att doona ensam, då man tidigare konstaterat att tillsammans är vi starka.

Jag lyfter min blick, andas djupt, och konstaterar Jesus är Herre trots allt. Och det räcker! Hans nåd är ny idag och Vi går i hans vilja. Vi vet åxå mot vad vi slåss, och vi är redo.

Nu ska ja fara, och hoppas verkligen att jag inte glömt nått!

Jag hörde om denna dikt för första gången en superkall torsdagkväll i februari -07. Jag var i Vasa o träffade då Bill Wilson för första gången. I sin predikan talade han olika vägar vi möter i livet. Och hade man gått på den första så förde den till den andra som förde till den tredje osv. Men det är upp till mig att välja om jag vill lämna den gamla vägen och börja gå på den nya.

Men den sista vägen han tog upp, sade han inte så mycket om. För det behövdes inte. Och då återberättade han denna dikt fritt, men citerade slutet korrekt. Det tog tag i mig. Jag gjorde ett val.

Jag tog steget ut och valde att gå den väg som inte så många andra har gått på. Att gå trots att ingen annan skulle gå. Fortsätta framåt no matter what. Och det beslutet den kvällen ledde mig bl.a. till praktiken i NY. Fortsättningsvis går jag på den. Min väg.

Fast jag har sett en hel del vägskäl. Har gått förbi många breda fina enkla vägar. Men hållit mig på denna, rätta väg, the one less traveled.

The extratropical remains of Ida are off the east coast of the US at 18Z on November 12, 2009.

Tropical Storm Ida became extratropical as it moved onshore in the United States. Throughout it’s life cycle, Ida was an unusual storm and actually required us to crack open the record books from time to time. Here are some of the more interesting facts about Ida:

• Ida was only the second storm since 1950 to develop into a hurricane in the Western Caribbean in November with El Nino conditions present (source). El Nino conditions tend to suppress Atlantic hurricane activity.
• As Ida moved onshore in the United States and transitioned to an extratropical cyclone, it began to take on the appearance of a “nor’easter”.
• This nor’easter produced some very powerful and high waves in the Atlantic Ocean. As a matter of fact, it produced a maximum significant wave height of 26.7 feet at NOAA buoy 44009, which broke a record for that particular buoy (records since 1984).
• Significant wave heights are the average of the highest 1/3 of waves recorded at a buoy. The absolute maximum wave height is often much higher, as Dr. Jeff Masters points out:

Since maximum wave height is typically about a factor of 1.9 greater than the significant wave height (which is the average trough-to-crest height of the top 1/3 largest waves)

• This means that the maximum waves at that particular NOAA buoy could have been around 50 feet!
• As pointed out by The Weather Channel blog: Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel recorded its highest crest in 34 years of record keeping.
• Sewells Point, VA had a record surge (not counting astronomical tides) of 5.96 feet. This was a higher surge than was recorded with Hurricane Isabel in 2003. The overall water level (including tides) was the 5th highest since 1930.
• Dr. Jeff Masters has a good breakdown on his blog of all of the surges along the east coast.
• Norfolk, Virginia had 7.40″ of rain on the three days that Ida’s remnants affected them. These three days alone set a record for the wettest November ever (records since 1871).
• Oceana and Norfolk, Virginia both recorded hurricane force wind gusts (75 and 74 mph respectively).

Hur som helst var jag en god stund hos gudsons familj i Pojo. Dom e bara så söta, eller hur? Bilden e tagen för några veckor sen då B it va hemma, så hann slapp it me på bild nu.. Men alltså ja, min gudson nere till vänster <3

Hjälpte till med en hel del småsaker inför den STORA DAGEN som de har framför sig nästa vecka. Mera sånt på måndagen. Och så busa jag o härja me killarna (som d hör till) och så laga testfrisyr åt M-L!
