In true conservative style, the town of Rexburg has created an event out of nothing.  Recently, Shawn Larsen resigned as mayor after the application deadline for those who would want to fill his vacancy.  Therefore, it was up to the city council to appoint who they felt would fit the position best.  Considering the demographic of Rexburg, Idaho, the choice was either a white Mormon conservative or you could appoint a white Mormon moderate.    The city of Rexburg chose the moderate, Richard Woodland.   Causing the Coulter conspiracy theorist crowd to claim the decision illegal because the council didn’t choose their candidate, Donna Benfield.

 As the law of local politics goes, the louder you are the more likely your claim will be investigated.  As the Rexburg Standard Journal states,

On Wednesday the Prosecutor’s Office submitted a motion for the District Court judge to appoint a special prosecutor who will investigate the matter and make a decision.

There’s that good old fashion fiscal conservatism at work; wasting public funds on frivolous investigations when you don’t get your way.  Luckily, I’m not the only person finding this whole situation ridiculous.  Take, for instance, what the local 9/12 organizer and former city council candidate Chris West has said on Rexburbia.com.

At last Wednesday’s meeting there were many Donna Benfield supporters. Having won the most votes the night previous for the City Council election and coming within 150 or so votes 2 years ago against Larsen, they all thought that she was the one for the job. So as the vote to appoint Woodland as mayor seemed closer to happening many of the Benfield supporters grew irritated. Some muttering profanity, visually showing their emotions and audible boos came from them. Forgetting that all of this was done within the laws of our land and that this was the way it was to happen, they still acted out of line against the Council. Maybe they should have taken a lesson from their leader, Benfield. I feel she is humble enough to accept the voter’s voice and serve no matter what position she is in.

So while there may be some out there that think that this new appointment was yet another example of corruptness in City Hall, I believe it was all done legally and with the best interests of the city at heart.

The most hilarious absurdity was that this group of fiscal conservative activists, who would abolish all social programs due to their belief that no one is entitled to anything, are outraged due to their sense of entitlement.  After all, they’re entitled to a win because Benfield got the highest amount of votes on a completely unrelated political procedure.

Funny Note:  Did anyone else notice that Shawn Larsen resigned because he wanted to leave politics to join his brother’s Multi-Level Marketing business Monavie?

I collect old Hot Rod photos, scan them and then give them back. Last saturday at Patty’s Burger Time ,Dave Sorenson brought me these great photos he took back in 1959 .These were Hot Rods that hung out at Howy’s gas station where he worked. The 35 belonged to Bob and the 34 to Jepson. The single finger salute is marked DEBENDINER , 49   Merc. I wish I more of that custom Merc. Stay tuned for the 1936 3 window taken in 1962.

The first complete covering of the Butte this season.  I love to see it covered in snow.  It really shows off the contours of the land.  But, my picture of it lacked spark and had a really uninteresting sky.  So I looked through my texture folder and found three textures to add and blend until I got something I liked.  It’s always fun to change things up a bit.

I’m only just beginning to realize how much of an alliteration nut I am.  You guys probably have already noticed.  News to me.

We got to spend some time with my brother, his lovely wife and their two boys.  Here are some pics from our adventures.

They are saying “HI GRAMMY!”  We take what we can get, it’s dang hard to get six eyes on the camera let alone smiles.  The cousins are those two Hamsters in the middle.

In last Tuesday’s edition of The Scroll, Brigham Young University Idaho’s student newspaper, there was a letter to the editor which challenged the bookstore’s love affair with Glenn Beck.  The argument made by the author was that the bookstore’s promotion of Beck violated the school’s overly militant stance on political neutrality, which is rooted in avoiding all partisan contention.  The student requested that books by liberal authors get the same representation in the bookstore as those written by radical right wing authors.

Although I agree with the sentiment shared by this student, I have a bit of a different stance.  I believe Glenn Beck should be banned from BYU-I’s bookstore.  It is obvious that Glenn Beck’s career is creating contention.  Beck achieves this by acting in an unchristian manner which goes against the mission of BYU-I.

BYU-I’s learning model is centered on Jesus Christ, an attempt to welcome the spirit on campus.  The school strives for this through their honor code which is by far the most comprehensive and strict of all four of the LDS colleges.  That being said, why in the world would such an institution promote the contentious figure of Glenn Beck?  Below is a short list of the un-christian rhetoric which Beck propogates.

• November 14, 2006 - Beck asks the first ever Muslim congressman to prove that he is not working for the enemy.
• August 10, 2006 - In alarmist style, threatens Muslims who have “sat on [their] frickin’ hands” and have not been opposing “bad muslims” with internment camps.
• August 15, 2006 – Mocks Muslim heritage by stating Wal-Mart theifs were “[t]hree guys with names I could never pronounce, basically Mohammed, Mustafa, Abdul, something like that.”
• March 20, 2006 - “Are we this stupid, are we as dumb as Nigeria?”
• April 6, 2006 - The indians “have found something that can be more profitable than casinos, and that’s abortion clinics.” Also, shows cultural insensitivity toward the history of Native Americans.
• July 28, 2009 - Beck calls President Obama a racist.  Resulting in the loss of approximately 80 advertisers.
• October 16, 2009 – Compares Fox New’s “persecution” from the White House to Jewish Holocaust victims.
• November 12, 2009 - While discussing protecting oneself against a government conspiracy on gold prices, Beck states that we need to think like a “German Jew in 1934.” 
• November 16, 2009 – Beck uses a disgusting analogy which places the opponents of Health Care reform as Roman Polanski’s 14 year old rape victim screaming “no, no, help me.”
• November 19, 2009 - Beck states that the “people in New York” are being “raped by” their “government.”

After seeing the divisive nature of Beck’s speech, can one sincerely believe that this is the sort of message we want associated with our “Temples of Learning” here at the “Disciple Training Center.”  This is not a matter of political correctness, it is a matter of religious adherence.
