Sometimes people just need to get bent. Do you know what I mean? And I don’t mean in the game of Twi

Sometimes people just need to get bent. Do you know what I mean? And I don’t mean in the game of Twister sense. Oh h…hold on. Some people do find Twister to be a form of erotic theatre, from what I have been told. So then if you are thinking of erotic practice, then yeah…you are somewhat in the neighbourhood of theoretical contextual terrain.

So what, you must be asking right now, am I rattling on about? I’m talking about Bent, the panel discussion that was held this past Tuesday evening at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto. It was an evening of discussions about the complex multi-dimensionalities of intimate social and personal relationships.

I was impressed with the balance of personal accounts of different kinds of intimate relationships, and the theoretical experiential knowledge that was present in so much of the discussion. I was expecting an evening of stories stemming from everyday social realties relating to the terrain of sexuality and relational constructs. What also was present was epistemological abundance. In other words, the discourse present in the room was as energetic as it was reflexive.

Anyone who attended the evening certainly would have walked away with new knowledge and ideas about the various permutations, combinations, and definitions that can be attributed to relationships of intimate, romantic, sexual, and familial constructs. That is precisely the word to use when considering the notion of relationships discussed that evening: construct. I was happy to be in a place, post-graduate school days, where the discussions around partnership, marriage, intimacy, and gender were not tied to the ruling relational boundaries of essentialist formations. Identity is constructed along lines of how people as social actors make sense of the relationships existent in the social, yet quite often relationships are indicative of the identifications rather than identities that are present in our everyday realities. Monogamy, polyamorous, or however one may see and conceptualize their relationship needs and realties, are at the end of the day present formations identified within the structures of gender politics. But even if one acknowledges such political boundaries, boundaries may all they be when one attempts to think about their own identity formations as political in their own way, as stemming from the relentless and rigorous practices present in resistance and action that existed during the discussion.

In my mind, I see such events as a type of direct action against hegemony. Much like the ways French revolutionaries would meet in public houses to discuss methods and strategies to thwart their oppression via the politics of the Ancient Regime, in a somewhat less dramatic and of course in a non-covert way, such discussions are revolutionary. Discourse on the existence of queer-normative relationships happened. We learned about the construct of the leather family and how its complexities relate to the essentialist-normative structures of neo-liberalist families. We learned of kinksexual relational formations as they are present almost symbiotically in a normative, vanilla universe. And we learned that the sex trade has more similarities and related strands of purpose, practice, and meaning to psychological therapy than possibly realized before.

I use the term queer-normative quite specifically here. I like to play and mess around with the idea of normativity, specifically as derived from heteronormativity. Even if one discusses heteronormativity or hetero-normalcy, it implies it’s significance in binomial opposition to the queer other. So when I write queer-normativity, it is directed along the lines of appropriation and political semantics, aligning language with power, as power is aligned with it’s capacity in discussions of agency.

So, yes, overall, it was a good night.

(Part Two of this entry, to be posted later this week.)

<img title="Pandora" src="http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/pandora.png" alt="What?

Donc…

Je vois le dernier xkcd.

Ça me fait réagir.

You are commenting as a Guest. Optional: Login below.

«Merci, bonsoir!»

Ils sont “in the know”.

A lot of people seem to think I am just a tad nuts when I talk about the coming biometric and RFID i

A lot of people seem to think I am just a tad nuts when I talk about the coming biometric and RFID identity cards we will be required to carry someday, maybe soon. They claim that America does not need to carry a national ID in their back pocket because we are a free nation and that would violate our rights. That’s true, it would violate some rights, and/or privileges, but when have you known our rights to stop the politicians from enacting more controls over our everyday lives?

There is an article out, Youth will find ID cards ‘handy’, that tells of a new biometric card in England targeted towards the younger set. The article says; A voluntary national identity card scheme will be launched in Greater Manchester today designed to give young people “day-to-day convenience”. Manchester residents over the age of 16 who hold a UK passport will be able to apply for the £30 biometric ID cards from November 30th.

I find it interesting that there seems to be little resistance to this card, perhaps because the UK is already a socialist nation and the citizens are used to the government telling them what to do and where to go. The article quotes a Home Office minister, Meg Hillier, as saying , the cards would be particularly useful for students and young people who do not wish to take their passports on a night out. And that Having a card would save the “cost and hassle” of getting into clubs and bars…

Apparently the biometric information will be stored on a database that will not be able to be downloaded onto disc format and is supposed to be used for criminal and border issues. The article goes on to say; Fingerprints and photos will be stored on one database and biographical information on another, linked together by a third. This information is already held by the Passport Service.

At this point the card will not be mandatory, but at some future date it will be, and the Brit’s can count on that happening. Meanwhile, India will begin issuing their own mandatory national ID cards in August of 2011, with 600 million people expected to be issued with their cards over five years, or about half of India’s population. In the US, our federal government is experimenting and researching away, under the watchful eye of the DHS and other control oriented agencies. Many universities and large employers already utilize an RFID card as a means of secure and positive ID, and some cards are even connected with financial accounts of the holders allowing them to also use the card to pay for some purchases, and to pay for rides on public transportation.

As we become more and more a nation of overconsumption and convenience we are using contactless payment cards, which are RFID cards, for everything from a meal at a fast food joint to zipping through the tolls on the turnpike. This usage will make us become complacent with the technology, and we will forget that there are risks with allowing this technology to become part of our everyday lives.

And therefore we will have to make some heavy decisions when making our preparedness plans for the future. To ID or not to ID, that is the question. One of the problems I foresee is the fact that if we need any governmental assistance at all, we will need to have the national ID card in hand to get that assistance. Also, we may well be jailed in an event that would allow martial law to be imposed if we do not have that same ID at hand.

Health care, food and housing all come under the umbrella of the FEMA world when our constitution becomes suspended, so what do we do? In fact, we may well be forced to relocate and take employment that we don’t want when the you know what hits the proverbial fan. By planning ahead, we won’t have to make these excruciating decisions under pressure, making the wrong decision as a result. Like I’ve said before, those of us who will be able to be self sufficient will have a much better chance to survive the coming times with a thorough plan in place. Research the facts and learn before it becomes too late to act as a free person. RFID is not the way to go, and by refusing to use it today, we can make it take much longer to be implemented, and extend our free lives for many more years. Resist the new world order, resist the new technology, and you can resist the power of the coming times.

I just listen to Nabucco – chorus of hebrew slaves.. and when music is indeed an indication for mood it might be the case: After being the whole day on the run coming home knowing that still one has not even touched the office work lying and waiting – one feels like one of those slaves yearning for a bit of relaxation and freedom. Meetings and a talk to our HOPE Cape Town staff was part of the days work. We published for the first time an internal employee’s handbook. After being so long in business as an NGO and having 27 employees it is time to bring together all the legal stuff and ethics for a work in this field. What are the do’s and don’ts? What means to be honest? How do I handle situation of danger? What means fraud? How do I handle donations?

There are so many challenges an NGO like HOPE Cape Town is facing up the question how we go about working place problems, what are the right channel of communications and so on and so on. HOPE Cape Town is meanwhile also a place for training. People are trained here, work for some years but then also moving on. So the “family structure” of HOPE Cape Town is also changing eventually with new people coming in. This makes it more important than ever to have a booklet to give guidance .
But todays talk was not only about the rules and regulations – we also talked about being proud to be part of such an organisation. What does it mean to identify with the organisation you are working for? How do we present ourselves to show our bond with the goals and achievements of HOPE Cape Town. Important topics and for me the possibility to touch base again with most HOPE Community Health Workers at the same time. I promised to get to all working places in the 17 township communities in the first half-year of 2010 again to visit them all in their daily environment. And I must say I am looking forward to it. I guess, I learn a lot in doing so.

The UK’s DNA database, already under fire by the European Court of Human Right for retaining s

The UK’s DNA database, already under fire by the European Court of Human Right for retaining samples and data from innocent people, has now been lambasted in a report by the government’s own genetics watchdog. The Human Genetics Commission.

The report, called Nothing to Hide, Nothing to Fear? contains a numbers of serious criticisms, most notably the finding that police forces around Britain are routinely arresting people simply in order to obtain their DNA. Almost a million innocent people, including many children, are now on the database, and the ECHR ruling has finally prompted the government to make some minor concessions, such as keeping the DNA of innocent people for 6 years as opposed to 12, but there appears to have been no fundamental change in police practice, nor any change in the instructions given to local forces on best practice.

It’s main recommendations are:

that there should be a parliamentary debate about the recording of what it calls ‘unconvicted’ people;

that because the purpose of the database has shifted over time, there should be constraints set out in new primary legislation;

that “robust evidence of the ‘forensic utility’ of the database should be produced to justify the resource cost and interference with individual privacy it represents”; and,

that there should be an independent oversight board and appeals board to consider removal of profiles; and transparency over data and other issues.

These are all laudable, but I really start to question their judgement in using the term ‘unconvicted people’. British law has always worked on the principle of ‘innocent until proven guilty’. People are therefore ‘innocent’ until they have a conviction. The term ‘unconvicted’ seems to imply that innocence is no longer an assumption, and that the working hypothesis is that everyone is either guilty or not yet (therefore, potentially) guilty. This is what results from the normalisation of surveillance in everyday life, and it’s one thing we warned most strongly against in our own Report on the Surveillance Society back in 2006. When even critical reports start using language that reflects the worldview of the people they are criticising, you have to be concerned.

Calling people ‘unconvicted’ and not ‘innocent’ matters.

The earliest dated prints of the ridged skin on human hands were made about 4,000 years ago during the pyramid building era in Egypt. In addition, one small portion of palm print, not known to be human, has been found impressed in hardened mud at a 10,000-year old site in Egypt.

It was common practice for the Chinese to use inked fingerprints on official documents, land sales, contracts, loans and acknowledgements of debts. The oldest existing documents so endorsed date from the 3rd century BC, and it was still an effective practice until recent times. Even though it is recorded that the Chinese used their fingerprints to establish identity in courts in litigation over disputed business dealings, researchers fail to agree as to whether the Chinese were fully aware of the uniqueness of a fingerprint or whether the physical contact with documents had some spiritual significance.

This collection is enormous and is composed of both civil as well as criminal prints. The civil file includes prints of government employees and candidates for federal jobs.

Next time you head out to your favorite sushi restaurant, you might want to think twice about ordering the tuna. There’s a good chance the fish on your plate could be an endangered species.

A new study by the American Museum of Natural History conducted DNA investigations on tuna at restaurants in New York City and Denver and found that nearly 30 percent of the tuna tested was actually endangered bluefin, and less than half of that was labeled as such.

A single bluefin tuna can sell for tens of thousands of dollars at market, a popular draw for the fishing industry. But that popularity comes with a price. Western stocks of northern bluefin tuna now hover around 10 percent of their “pre-exploitation” numbers. And last October, the country of Monaco nominated northern bluefin tuna for a listing under a complete international trade ban by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), according to a press release.

The serving up of a critically endangered fish is not necessarily on the shoulders of the restaurants. They might not know they’re doing it, just as consumers might not know they’re eating it. This is because the eight species of tuna are so genetically similar – closer than humans are to chimpanzees – that even with DNA testing, it’s hard to distinguish the difference, and once tuna arrives to the U.S. market, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved marketing label is simply “tuna.” A new and improved method of genetic detective work just might help change all that.

“When you eat sushi, you can unknowingly get a critically endangered species on your plate,” says Jacob Lowenstein, a graduate student affiliated with the Museum and Columbia University in the press release. “But with an increasingly popular technique, DNA barcoding, it is a simple process for researchers to see just what species are eaten at a sushi bar.”

DNA barcoding can be used to identify what animal became which product, even down to the origin of a leather handbag, according to the press release. In the case of the bluefin tuna, DNA barcoding defines a genetic key of 14 nucleotides exclusive enough to identify whether the tuna being served is bluefin. A similar method has been used to identify endangered whales on the Asian market and wildlife being sold in the African bushmeat trade.

With any luck, researchers will develop a handheld barcoding machine that can be used to identify fish on-site.

This study can be found in the current issue of PLoS ONE.

It’s nearly winter, and those of you lucky enough to live near some beaches or mudflats probably enjoy gazing out over motley assortments of shorebirds like this one. Until you can get outside, though, cast your eyes over this photo and help us answer the question: How many species are in this photo? (Of course, we’d also like to hear which species you think are in the photo—and how you can tell.)

One thing I love about this kind of birding is there are always a few birds on view that draw your eye as either pleasantly familiar or at least easy to figure out. I can gauge the intensity of my bird watching partners by how long they’re willing to scrutinize the other birds, like those little inkblots at the top of the frame. I also love the stark contrasts in size. I always find myself surprised by how my mental picture of a bird’s size in isolation doesn’t stack up against reality when two birds are side by side.

So have at it! Let’s try to compile a complete list of species for this photo. And if we need to I’ll try and get one or two of the Lab’s eBirders to weigh in on those mirage birds at the top.

(Click the picture to sink your eyeballs into a larger version. It’s a crop of a much larger image, with even more species in it. Spoiler alert: following the link will reveal some of the bird IDs in this picture.)

http://www.identity-cards.net/ the national id cards website

This website contains a comprehensive listing of national ID cards by geographic region worldwide allowing users to study and compare specific national policies regarding identity cards, as well as a list of resources on the topic.

National identification systems have been proliferating in recent years as part of a concerted drive to find common identifiers for populations around the world. Whether the driving force is immigration control, anti-terrorism, electronic government or rising rates of identity theft, identity card systems are being developed, proposed or debated in most countries. However, there is no comprehensive database documenting the status of national identity card systems anywhere in the world, and this website has been designed in order to fill this gap.

We invite users to help compile this information. Go to ‘UPDATE ID INFORMATION’ and follow the steps to submit current information about national ID card systems globally.

This website has been developed under The New Transparency Project an MCRI project funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. The idea for the website comes from the book “Playing the Identity Card” recently edited by Colin Bennett and David Lyon, and published by Routledge (2008). The website is maintained and updated by a group of students and faculty from Queen’s University and the University of Victoria.

A bientôt !

Identifying the problem and taking the right step at the right time is very important in every decis

Identifying the problem and taking the right step at the right time is very important in every decision-making situations of life. Industrial Green Chemistry Workshop (IGCW) is such an initiative wherein a group of entrepreneurs and industry people have identified the need of the hour and have taken their first step towards a sustainable future.

IGCW 2009 aims to take green chemistry from the cauldrons of the laboratory to the corridors of industry. The workshop aims to encourage pharmaceutical and chemical industries to deliver products and services in benign ways, untainted by toxic routes and environmental damage. This three-day workshop is meticulously designed on the basis of a 9-Eye (I) Approach. Each ‘eye’ expands the vision of participants for engaging them into emerging views of Industrial Green Chemistry paradigms.

The first day of the workshop will concentrate on igniting, inspiring, and encouraging people to take initiation in the field of green chemistry. The theme for the second day, i.e., 5th December, 2009, is Identification, Invention, and Innovation. The target for this day will be the technical directors, process managers, production mangers, R&D managers, etc. On this day, renowned speakers, viz, Dr. Kenneth Geiser, Dr. Pete Meyers, and Dr. S Ahmad will give lectures on different aspects of sustainable technologies which will help identify the key challenges in the field of industrial green chemistry. They will help the participants to view the various paradigms in the upcoming domain of Industrial Green Chemistry, providing significant input for identifying its application. Industrial case studies, paper presentations by institutes, scientists, and researchers will be integrated as relevant to the theme. So after initiation, they will be able to identify what’s the urgent need for an hour and to innovate them.

So are you ready to be with us to identify the key problems standing as an obstacle for a sustainable future?
