<title><![CDATA[Weed in Kanji: The language of nature]]></title>

<p><em>Kanji</em>, the Japanese characters that borrows from Chinese, are not only ideographic but also modular. The secret to memorizing hundreds and thousands of <em>kanji</em> is to focus on their elements for meaning and sound. As an adult learner, I am struck by how many of these core <em>kanji</em> elements represent nature, such as water, tree, mountain, fire, stone, sun, valley, soil, tree, and so on.</p>
<p>As an example, the word <em>zassou</em> (雑草) or weed is composed of two characters&#8211; <em>zatsu</em> (雑) or miscellaneous and <em>kusa</em> (草) or grass&#8211; and a total of five elements, including three characters that represent life forms: tree, bird, and plant. That <em>zatsu</em> character&#8217;s use of the number &#8220;nine&#8221; is perhaps arbitrary, but there is also a meaning that can be inferred by the combination of nine, tree and bird. Many Japanese words and personal names have at least one character or element that represents nature.</p>
<p>I must clarify that the above image and explanations come from Daiki Kusuya&#8217;s wonderful <em>Kanji Starter 2</em> (IBC Publishing, 5th edition, 2008). The book does a great job of presenting simple to complex kanji, offering memorable explanations, and cross-referencing by number. Still, the author warns that he created his explanations to help second-language learners, and that they should not be taken as true etymology. I like how the author privileges memory and imagination over historical accuracy.</p>
<p style="padding-left:30px;">&#8220;The pictographs or ideas explaining kanji characters in this book may not necessarily be based on their historical development. They may be alterations or even my own creations. Again, the purpose of this book is to know the meanings of kanji characters, not to study how they were derived.&#8221;</p>
<p>I am simultaneously studying Japanese language and why urban Japanese, like many global counterparts, want a greater connection with nature. To an outsider, it is curious how nature is so pervasive in Japanese language. Perhaps many Japanese do not reflect on this aspect of their language, much like no one considers it remarkable that so many Tokyoites tend  flowers outside their homes and shops. As an anthropologist, I view this lack of discourse, this invisibility of the everyday, as evidence that it is a key aspect of the culture.</p>

<p>&#8220;<strong><span style="color:#800000;">Fart Logic</span></strong>&#8221; is translated as quibble or sophism, but neither of the words seems to capture the feeling that I know the Japanese carries.  HeRiKutsu decribes a very distasteful, repugnant sort of arguing style.  It is a ripe, disgusting word !  In Japanese it does not have to have an intentional aspect to it either.  For just like a fart, some people just naturally let out naturally, with no shame.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.artchive.com/artchive/C/clemente.html">Francesco Clemente</a> painted this work in response to Titian&#8217;s <em>Allegory of Prudence</em>, as part of a series for the National Gallery, collected in <em>Encounters:  New Art from Old</em>, Richard Morphet. These two paintings (Titian and Clemente)&#8211; two allegories of prudence&#8211;together constitute guidelines for a series to which I will contribute in my own way.  Having noted the features of Titian&#8217;s prudence, I will outline the salient components of Clemente&#8217;s version here, following Morphet&#8217;s discussion.</p>
<p>1) The point of departure for the theme came from one of Clemente&#8217;s friends in Los Angeles, a Chicano, who bore a tattoo including a statement of wisdom popular among his peers.  On each arm there was tattooed a pretty girl, one smiling, with the words &#8220;smile now,&#8221; one crying, with the words &#8220;cry later.&#8221;</p>
<p>2) Clemente chose to enter a dialogue with Titian&#8217;s allegory for several reasons, beginning with his own engagement with the <em>emblem</em> as a form and tradition.  He admired Ezra Pound&#8217;s imagism, or vorticism, taking the <a href="http://www.kiasma.fi/kokoelmanayttelyt/yojuna/yojuna_txt.php?lang=en&#38;mode=&#38;idd=7">poetics of the ideogram </a>as an updating of the emblem, with its capacity to create an internal flash of coherence through the juxtaposition heterogeneous materials.</p>
<p>3) Clemente riffed on Titian&#8217;s iconography (relating the three ages of man with three totem animals) which Clemenete associated with the <em>gryllus</em>, a representation for Medievel people of the baser instincts of life.  The gryllus theme is evoked through the growing vine, each of whose leaves depicts a naked black man, each one either smiling or crying and holding a paper with the appropriate half of the title proverb.  Superimposed over the entire scene is a winged phallus, an ancient symbol associated with sexual cosmic vitality.  The gryllus and the winged phallus may be read as conflicting attitudes towards embodied desire.</p>
<p>4) The painting fills a wall (92 x 184 ins), done in a style meant to suggest graffiti art, including spray painting, referring to the setting in which Clemente&#8217;s Chicano friend lives.</p>
<p>How do I go on from here?  What is the vector of the relay from Titian through Clemente to me, intimating how I may express what I have learned about my own relationship with prudence?  The condition of  the soul incarnated in a beast as an allegory of desire continues today as avatar formation.   A figure is forming, in any case, juxtaposing my own scene of decision (Spain 1965-66) with the Cabot-Koppers Superfund disaster.</p>

This « picturesque » way to describe objects and ideas is an original characteristic of the Chinese writing. Without a tonal alphabet and the necessity to convert words to sounds, it is used to communicate in various languages, not only in all Chinese dialects, but partially in Japanese and Korean.</p>

<p>One word can say a lot.</p>
<p>Spend some time with a philosophy or language buff, and you might hear that the Chinese character for “crisis” is actually a combination of characters meaning “danger” and “opportunity.” The basic idea, syndicated “Straight Dope” columnist Cecil Adams explained a few years ago, is that a moment of crisis presents two possible outcomes: either growth and positive change or regression and failure. Sounds like some pretty deep ancient wisdom, right?</p>
