Helo aquí. Una gran maravilla de disco. Genial, majestuoso, tortuoso por algunos pasajes y redentor en otros como casi todo lo se manufactura en la magnánima disquera WARP.

El inglés Chris Clark nos presentó su quinto LP hace un par de meses. Yo lo tenía por ahí, arrumbado en el escritorio de la lap junto a 27 carpetas diferentes, escondiéndose de mi escrutinio meticuloso o de mi adoración total, misma que me llevaría a escucharlo sin parar durante una noche (la de ayer) una y otra vez. De haber sabido su grandeza de antemano, se los hubiese presentado inmediatamente. Pero no. El Arthur, el yonuncafuioliveira, el Le Clash!, lo tenía escondido. Que marro.

Pero siempre hay tiempo para reparar las grietas del olvido y es por ello que les traigo al disco más sorpendente de este año, con sonidos inimaginables, de jornadas horrorosas que se vuelven omniosas en instantes.

Here are the tracks that I wrote for Monotonik last winter. After waiting for months and getting various promises from Simon it now appears that these tracks are never gonna come out on the label. Therefor I decided to make them available here, for free and for your pleasure. I hope you enjoy.

As you have probably noticed, I’ve not been uploading much new material lately. It is simply due to the fact that I’ve got a job again and being made redundant was the idea of this blog in the first place. I don’t have as much time for writing music now as I am working during the week. Nothing abnormal there But I’m not gonna stop writing music that I’ve written for over 20 years nor will I be burying this blog. I hope patience from you.

1. 평소 같으면 늦은 시간도 아니지만, 내일은 6시에 일어나야 하는 날. 평소의 목요일 밤은 11시면 잠자리에 들었는데, 오늘은 어쩌다 보니 12시 반인 지금까지 버티고 있다. 피곤하긴 정말 피곤한데, 조금 전에 마신 샴페인 때문인지 술기운 좀 푼답시고 마신 닥터 스튜어트 차 때문인지 가슴이 막 두근거려서 잠이 안 올 것 같기도 하고. 어제도 잠 거의 못 잤는데 큰일이다. 이래갖고 악마의 금요일을 어찌 버티나.

2. 닥터 스튜어트 차는 뭐 허브 테라피 몇 년의 기술과 배합의 결정체라는데, 내가 산 건 무려 피부 독소 제거 차… 이렇게 곳곳에서 신경 쓰는데 왜 나의 피부는 좋아지지 않는 걸까. 왜긴 왜야, 생활이 불규칙하고 밤에 제대로 세안 안 하고 자거나 정신줄 놔서 바를 거 제때 안 바르니까 그렇지. 오늘만 해도 아침에 어버버하다가 무려 선블록을 안 바르고 나가는 용자수행. 게다가 파리는 실로 며칠 만에 햇빛이 쨍쨍. 그런 주제에 해 딱 떨어지니까 바로 비 오데? 헝…

하여튼 닥터 스튜어트 차는, 몸에 좋다는 차들이 대개 그렇듯이, 몸에 좋을 것 같은 맛이다. 왜 몸에 좋은 음식은 맛있으면 안 되는 걸까… 이것도 그런 건가? 비싸야 더 팔린다든가 하는? 맛이 없어야 몸에 좋을 것 같아서?

3. 간만에 학교에서 피에르를 만났다. 무척이나 의외로, 재즈 화성학 수업을 나랑 같이 듣고 있었더라. 내가 빠진 날만 골라서 나왔던 모양. 뭐야 이건. 여튼 피에르는 여전히 안정적인 플랫폼을 찾아 번민의 나날을 보내고 있는 것 같았다. 전부터 말했지만 나의 세계로 오라니까… (뭔가 뉘앙스가 이상하지만.)

4. 동네 가라데 도장에 일본 유명 도장 사범들을 초청한 행사가 있었다. 어쩌다 보니 그 자리에 가서 사진을 좀 찍게 되었는데, 사진 찍기 참 어렵더라. 일단 무작정 많이 눌러대긴 했는데, 한 두어 장 건지면 다행일 것 같다. 표준렌즈로 찍으려니 더 어렵더만.

5. 끝나고 일본 사람들이랑 얘기를 좀 했는데, “갑시다”라는 뜻의 불어 “on y va”가 “괴물 할머니”라는 뜻의 일본어 “오니 바바”가 떠올라서 그렇게 우스웠다고…; 님들 쫌, 초반엔 그렇게 근엄한 간지 사범님들이더니…;

6. 근데 또 느꼈지만 일본인들 정말 건전한 것 같다. 너무나 착하고 건전해서 기가 막힐 정도. 뭔가 “막 나가는 threshold”(나 혼자 쓰는 용어) 자체가 굉장히 높아서, 그 밑으로는 전부 너무나 얌전하게 평생을 살아가고, 그걸 넘어가는 사람은 일단 막 나감 레벨 자체가 워낙에 높아서 멀리서 봐도 주머니 속의 송곳처럼 (…) 눈에 확 들어온다는 느낌. 반면 프랑스는 “막 나가는 threshold”가 상당히 낮아서 막 나가는 사람들도 많고 그 속의 스펙트럼도 다양해서 가볍게 막 나가는 사람들 또한 많은 게 아닌가 싶다.

7. IDM이란 용어 자체에 회의가 좀 드는 요즘이다. Intelligent Dance Music과 Stupid Dance Music을 구별하는 용어가 아니라, 대중음악, 특히 댄스 음악의 한계를 넘어가고자 하는 실험과 연구를 Intelligent라고 규정한다면, 물론 지금도 좋은 IDM이 많지만, 과연 Intelligent하다고 부를 수 있을까 싶은 IDM도 많이 보이는 것 같다. 아무리 장르에는 스타일화가 따르게 마련이라지만, 강렬한 비트에 글리치 “이펙트”가 들어가고 고음의 예쁘장한 멜로디가 얹혀진다는 식으로 정형화된 스타일로서의 IDM이란 건 너무 게으른 게 아닐까. 더구나 “글리치 이펙트는 어떤 플럭인으로 내면 됨?” 하는 류의 질문들이 각종 포럼에 심심찮게 올라온다는 걸 생각하면… 거참 뭐랄까. 만 레이가 포토샵이 없는 시대에 살았기 때문에 어쩔 수 없이 solarization을 손으로 한 게 아니거든? 이랄까.

8. “너 어떤 음악 해?” 라고 누가 물으면, 사실 대답할 말이 별로 없다. IDM이라기엔 너무 안 Intelligent 하다는 생각에서인데, 조금 낯 뜨거움을 감수한다면 Elegant Dance Music 정도가 어떨까 싶기도 하다만은. 그냥 IDM/Ambient라고 한다. 그게 제일 편하거든. 참 편리한 용어인 건 사실이다.

9. 어제에 이어서, 작업 너무 안 하는 나의 게으름에 채찍질을 가하기 위해 7.과 8.을 쓴다. 그래도 어제 시작한 곡은 조금 괜찮은 결과물이 나올 것 같긴 하지만서도… 이건 어쿠스틱 녹음을 반드시 해야 할 것 같아서 언제 완성될 지는 또 알 수 없다능? (…)

10. 전부터 생각했지만 나는 덕을 쌓은 것은 별로 없으면서 덕을 쌓는 컬춰 내지 그 군상에는 관심이 참 많은 것 같다. 사실 유명한 만화책들 몇 권 봤다는 것 정도로 덕을 쌓았다고 할 수는 없지. 애니메이션도 사실 귀가 아파서 영 안 좋아하기 때문에 지브리 작품을 빼면 에반게리온 정도 밖에 본 게 없고. 게임도 중고교 수학능력 필수 과목에도 포함되었던 (뭣이) 프린세스메이커, 심시티 외엔 심즈, 닌텐독스, 동물의 숲, 몇 가지 퍼즐 게임 정도가 다고.

그래도 덕을 쌓은 사람들의 이야기는 참 재밌다고 생각한다. 거칠고 위험해 보이는 세계를 동경하는 심정…인 것 아닐까 하는 생각도 사실 요즘 드는데 -ㅅ= 한참 들여다 보다 보니 사실 웬만한 건 이해를 할 것 같다. 2차원 연애도 머리로는 이해하겠고, BL이나 코스프레, 피규어, 아이돌, 에로 게임 같은 거야 취존중이란 말 안 꺼내도 이해할 수 있다. 한정상품 모으기나 동인지도 이해가 되고, 학교 체육복이니 학교 수영복이니 하는 것도 마음은 안 가지만 알 것은 같으며, 뭐, 로리콘이나 각종 모에 코드 같은 것도 심정적으론 거부감이 들 때가 있으되 머리로는 이해하겠다.

그런데 단 하나 정말 이해가 안 가는 게 있는데 뭐냐면, 안고 자는 베개… 이거 하나만큼은 정말 왜 좋아하는 건지 이해를 못 하겠다. 나도 뭔가 안고 자고 싶을 때가 있으니 물리적인 접촉에 대해선 이해하겠는데, 2차원 이미지가 인쇄된 베개를 안고 잘 때면 그게 안고 자는 방향에서 바라봤을 때 그림이 나오는 프로포션도 아닌 것 같은데 무슨 의미가 있는 거지? 3차원보다 2차원이 좋다는 것까진 그럴 수 있다고 이해하겠는데, 2차원 이미지가 안고 잘 때 3차원의 원근으로 왜곡돼서 보이는 순간 2차원과의 괴리감이 현실적으로 확 와닿아서 팍 깬다든가 하지 않는 걸까? 내가 만일 2차원 연애에 빠진다면 그런 순간이 가장 싫을 것 같은데. 아니, 차라리 베개 옆면에 그림을 인쇄해서 옆에서 안았을 때 그림의 정면이 보인다든가 하면 또 모르겠는데…

11. 피곤해 죽겠는데 잠은 안 자고 뭔 소릴 쓰고 있는 거야, 정말.

The Root Delay is designed for creating dub style echo and filter sweeps as well as other delay effects found in all kinds of modern electronic music. The effect features a delay section with separate adjustable controls for left and right time settings and also a filter section with controls for sweep rate and depth. The delay and filter combination produces everything from granular glitch / idm style processing to sweeping dub style echos and slap back effects.

The Root Delay is an echo / delay VST effect plug-in for Windows. The Root Delay is designed for creating dub style echo and filter sweeps as well as other delay effects found in all kinds of modern electronic music. The effect features a delay section with separate adjustable controls for left and right time settings and also a filter section with controls for sweep rate and depth. Luca Mayer has this summary of Sun’s open source IdM projects. I have some experience with OpenSPML (obviously), and I have fiddled with OpenDS. There is some great stuff there.

Da hab ich den Herrn Vogelmann ganz schon vernachlässigt in letzter Zeit – sozusagen anti social networking. Egal, surfenderweise im Netz unterwgs, dubdidu… Oweia!

Sollte Herr Horn jetzt den noise verraten haben? In der ersten Sekunde war ich geschockt, habe ich doch wieder derbsten Krach aus diversen Abteilungen der Zunft erwartet -  MNDR und Co. bisher doch auch mit solchem in Verbindung gebracht.  Kann ich nun getrost vergessen! Ich hab zwar immer noch keine Ahnung, was IDM sein soll, aber tanzbare Elektro Mucke mit 80er Jahre Flair und Brille aus dem DDR Antiquariat find ich gut! Nun, jetzt mögen Freunde extremer Klangwelten wirklich angewidert den Kopf schütteln – mir egal, die Ost style Strandbrille (ja, ja!) ist einfach zu sexy für diese Welt!

Trovare qualcosa che suoni nuovo è sempre stata una delle mie fissazioni. Per questo motivo ho speso innumerevoli pomeriggi (specialmente alle superiori, al posto di studiare ovviamente) vagando per il web alla ricerca di musica nuova. Non è una cosa molto salutare ve lo assicuro. Comunque il succo è che in tutte queste ricerche appena sono capitato sul myspace di queste tre simpatiche tigri in trappola, ho immediatamente comprato il disco.

Vengono da Londra (direi che si sente) e mischiano elettronica, noise, post-rock… il tutto in pezzi assolutamente non lineari, oserei quasi dire dall’attitudine prog, o math se preferite, dato che fa più figo ultimamente. Hanno registrato due ep semplicemente chiamati EP1 ed EP2, e le loro canzoni  non hanno titolo, ma sono numerate dall’1 al 9 in maniera progressiva. La loro foga di sperimentare è tanta che onestamente non posso dire che tutti i tentativi siano riusciti bene, ciononostante “1″ e “7″ sono due tra i pezzi più stimolanti che abbia ascoltato recentemente. Il primo paragone che mi viene in mente sono i Battles, ma c’è un po’ di tutto dentro, da Aphex Twin ai Lightning Bolt.. a voi il giudizio comunque:
