“Will you dance with me?” he asks me. This whole year I’ve had a huge crush of him. I’ve watched as my friends date him. I watch, and stand wait for my turn.

“Yes” I reply. I take his hand. For this instant I can say, I have never been happier. I became so nervous, I can’t look at him. Am I supposed to feel this way? He’s my best guy friend. He does things for me without even asking.

“We’re going around in circles, here lets move.” We dance across the floor. I laugh at the little comments he makes. Even though I know I mean nothing to him, just another one of his friends dancing with him, I feel as though in this moment I do mean something to him. The circles start again.

“I’m really no good at this”

“Haha. Yea, me neither”

“Here, twirl.” I spin. I’m truthfully having the time of my life.

“Again, Again” I can’t help but spill out giggles. He makes me happy with out even trying. I slowly tilt my head up. He looks at me. I smile. I never let his hand leave mine. My right palm, is holding on to this moment as long as possible. I let everything leave my mind. He runs through it. If it’s true that every night you have a dream about someone, they fell asleep dreaming off you. He thinks of me an offal lot.

Dear Greggy,

I’m not sure what to do now. I’m just waiting for all my feelings to go away, but in the meantime, staying close to you is proving to be very difficult. I knew what I was up against when I told you I wasn’t going anywhere. I had been prepared to stay. But even with the detachment I’ve been doing, even now that we text less and we see each other less, it’s harder than I had expected it to be.

I can’t leave because it would hurt you. If I leave without warning, you will notice, and you’ll look for me. If I leave and tell you beforehand, I know you’ll be crushed, and I don’t want to see the look of defeat on your face — that look you had when we were having the Talk, that look you had when you were concluding that things were going to change now. I don’t want to hurt you.

But I also cannot and should not hurt myself.

Me first. I need to love myself first. But how do I do that, without changing anything? How can I move on and still remain close? How can I put myself before our friendship, and at the same time put our friendship before myself?

Stay? Or leave? I don’t know.
