As a way to nurture our community the Center for Self Leadership has created a new online forum on our website! I invite you to click here to check it out:

http://www.selfleadership.org/forum/8096

The forum will nourish and enhance our community through ongoing communication about anything and everything related to IFS: what has your IFS training experience been? What are you doing as therapists, clients, parents, teachers, healthcare workers, business leaders, clergy? Do you have questions of others about their use and experience with IFS? Are there any IFS related photo’s, poems, songs, art that you’d like to share?

Please spend some time on the forum. Read what others have written or, because the forum is brand new, boldly get the ball rolling by posting something that others can take in and respond to. The forum is the new place to connect and I really hope I “see you there!”

And finally, I wish all of you, your families, friends, and yes, your communities, a happy holiday season.

Sincerely,

During the second year they are appointed as Third Secretaries in and Indian Embassy/High Commission where that language is spoken. They spend another two years in the same Embassy as Second Secretaries. After two postings abroad, the I.F.S. Officers are posted in India in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) (Eg. Passport office or Indian Council for Cultural Relations or elsewhere in the Government of India). In the MEA, you will look after India’s political, economic and commercial work. In the Senior Scale and the Junior Administrative Grade the I.F.S. Officers are appointed as First Secretaries. In the Selection Grade I.F.S. Officers serve as Counsellors. In very small countries the Indian Ambassador would be in that grade.

In the supertime scale, many I.F.S. At this level, some Ambassadors are non I.F.S. Officers like politicians, retired or serving I.A.S. Officers or retired Defence Chief.

Kleiner Nachtrag: Menzel schaut schon wieder so verkniffen.

By Jonathan Hickman (Writer), Alessandro Vitti (Artist), and Sunny Gho of IFS (Colors) Some Thoughts

By Jonathan Hickman (Writer), Alessandro Vitti (Artist), and Sunny Gho of IFS (Colors)

Some Thoughts Before The Review: While it’s slightly sidetracked the main Secret Warriors plot, I’ve been enjoying “God of Fear, God of War” quite a bit. The dynamic between Ares and Phobos has been so well written that both characters have climbed up a few spots on my list of favorite Marvel characters.

The Story: H.A.M.M.E.R. and the Dark Avengers launch a strike on one of Fury’s bases. The kids fight back with all they’ve got as the base’s self-destruction sequence counts down. Meanwhile, Nick Fury and John Garrett continue the investigation that leads to the events that take place in Dark Reign: The List – Secret Warriors.

What’s Good: For as much as I like Nick Fury and the way Jonathan Hickman writes the character, I’ve been waiting for kids to finally take front and center in Secret Warriors. In Secret Warriors #9, the kids finally get another chance to shine and that’s really the issue’s greatest strength. Fury wouldn’t have picked the team members if they weren’t capable to taking the fight to the bad guys, but until now, few issues of Secret Warriors have shown exactly why Fury chose the kids that he did. Seeing the Warriors stand tall against the Dark Avengers is a real treat that goes a long way towards establishing and legitimizing Hickman’s team in the Marvel Universe. From Yo-Yo’s epic return to Edin Fesi’s explanation of the logic behind his powers, it’s clear that, as far as bringing the pain is concerned, the Warriors have serious legs as a team for the future.

I continue to find myself impressed by Jonathan Hickman’s character work. He never allows the reader to forget that the Warriors are, for the most part, just kids helping to fight the good fight. From the way the team members interact with each other to the individual personalities that are starting to form, Hickman does a fine job of keeping the series grounded and defined by the characters.

Artist Alessandro Vitti handles all the action in Secret Warriors #9 really well. It’s chaotic and crazy, yet executed in a way that’s easy to follow and a blast to look at. On nearly every page of action something really cool happens. My favorite thing, Yo-Yo going all “Ed Norton in Fight Club” on Hawkeye/Bullseye.

What’s Not So Good: Since I already knew how Nick Fury’s part of the story ended thanks to Marvel’s odd releasing schedule for The List, his entire segment felt painfully tacked on. I suppose it was a necessary part of the story, but knowing how it ended left the scene completely devoid of surprise or tension. More Hickman-written Nick Fury is always a good thing, but I wish I had yet to read The List – Secret Warriors.

Conclusion: Secret Warriors #9 is loaded with action and makes the team really look like a force to be reckoned with. Be sure to pick it up.

Grade: B+

It is with a certain level of incredulity today I read this piece of tripe written by Spectator editor Fraser Nelson, who among other things has claimed that ‘no one in Westminster has done more to combat poverty’ than failed ex-Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith – who has in recent years had a damascan conversion to the issue of poverty after visiting a poor area of Glasgow (after being sacked as Tory leader – presumably he didn’t believe in severe poverty before then, like so many other Conservatives).

Now I don’t actually doubt IDS’ sincerity at all, but in reality what has he actually achieved to reduce poverty beyond bringing it to the attention of the Conservatives, itself an admission they have failed to notice it properly in the past?

Absolutely nothing.

Compare this to Gordon Brown, who as Chancellor took 800,000 children out of poverty (the number has in recent years dropped back to ‘only’ half a million I believe), as well a third of pensioners.

And before you mention the 10p tax rate debacle (that he introduced in the late 90s might I add), the IFS says every single budget under Gordon Brown, including his last one, has been redistributive, with the poorest gaining most.

However worthy Iain Duncan Smith is when preaching to Tories about the need to help the poor, he has no such concrete achievements to his name.

Nor as far as I’m aware, does anyone else in Westminster.

The person in Westminster who has done most to combat poverty is not Iain Duncan Smith, it’s the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown.

By Phil Hester (Writer & Artist), Andre Parks (Inks), and Sakti Yuwono, Arif Prianto, and Admira Wijaya of IFS (Colors)

Some Thoughts Before The Review: The last issue of The Darkness brought the familiar “team building” storyline to the series. And you know what? It worked really well. I look forward to seeing Jackie’s team in action now that everyone has been introduced.

The Story: Jackie’s got interest in some swampy land. Unfortunately for him, the Sovereign has some business interests in the same area. Oh yea, and there’s an ancient bog monster in the swamp that both may have to deal with in some way.

What’s Good: It’s not often that I get to review a comic that’s both written and drawn by the same person. It can’t be an easy task and I give all the credit in the world to Phil Hester for taking on the challenge. The Darkness #80 proves that he was definitely up to the task.

The first chapter of “Bog” has all the trappings of a classic swamp monster story. There’s shady businessmen, a reluctant lady who knows of the areas secret, and a likeable rogue that isn’t going to be dissuaded from getting what he wants. Hester’s story is simple, effective, and just plain entertaining. It’s also got personality to spare (though some of it is delivered in a heavy-handed way) and that goes a long way towards making up for how odd the story feels following The Darkness #79. But I’ll get to that in a bit.

Hester’s artwork in the latest issue of The Darkness is solid and gets the job done. It’s stylish and delivers in the areas that matter the most. While a few panels look a little awkward, for the most part the action’s exciting, the storytelling compliments the dialogue, and the color work/heavy inking keeps things clear and uncluttered.

What’s Not So Good: This may sound something like a nitpick, but, simply put, “Bog” is a strange way to follow up the team building stuff that’s taken place over the last few issues of The Darkness. It’s particularly strange considering that “Bog” sort of seems like a filler story that could almost be told at any point in the series. Yeah, the Sovereign character is involved so you could argue there’s some sort of storytelling window “Bog” must take place in, but the monster comes first and foremost. Jackie Estacado’s people seem to completely disappear in The Darkness #80 and it leaves me wondering why Hester didn’t decide to let the team establish itself more first before moving ahead with the “Bog” arc.

Conclusion: It isn’t perfect, but you really can’t go wrong with The Darkness #80. If you like The Darkness, monster stories, and entertaining dialogue, be sure to pick it up.

By Mark Waid (Writer), Kenneth Rocafort (Art), and Sunny Gho of IFS (Colors)

Some Thoughts Before The Review: The great looking first issue of Cyberforce/Hunter-Killer definitely started things off on the right foot for the Mark Waid and Kenneth Rocafort mini-series. Though Waid used a tried-and-true formula to set up the crossover, I found myself appreciating it because I’m fairly new to both the Cyberforce and the Hunter-Killer stuff. Sure, they were in that Fusion mini-series with the Avengers that I reviewed, but it was hard to really get a bead on the teams with so many characters running around.

The Story: Ellis desperately tries to smooth things over between Cyberforce and Hunter-Killer as he reveals the truth behind Morningstar and his connection with the Cyberdata Corporation.

What’s Good: The main reason you should pick up Cyberforce/Hunter-Killer #2 is because Kenneth Rocafort is just so damned good at what he does. His work may look gritty and rough at first glance, but upon closer inspection, it’s hard to deny how sleek and sexy Rocafort’s style is, especially when it comes to his character work. And thankfully, as far as the art is concerned, Cyberforce/Hunter-Killer #2 isn’t a case of style over substance in any way (though, thanks a great deal to Sunny Gho’s color choices, it is definitely stylish). Rocafort’s action scenes are dynamic (I really like how he handles Velocity’s powers), his attention to detail is mighty impressive (seriously, check out the panels that feature some sort of complex technology), and his smooth storytelling is complimented by some slick panel layouts.

So the artwork is quite kick-ass in the second Cyberforce/Hunter-Killer issue. How about the writing? Mark Waid does a nice job of handling the necessary exposition while moving both teams forward towards an interesting enough goal. In particular, I really like the “Jett” technology concept that’s revealed to be driving the overall plot. Also worth mentioning is the dialogue that’s exchanged between Cyberforce and Hunter-Killer. Waid nails the tension, yet also tosses in some sharp, surprisingly funny lines to keep things from feeling overly serious or pretentious.

What’s Not So Good: I’ve only got one complaint about the artwork and one complaint about the writing. The negative thing about the artwork is that occasionally backgrounds look a bit plain, bland, and sterile. It’s not such a big deal, but it’s noticeable enough to mention. The negative thing about the writing is that there’s no avoiding the sense that a portion of the book is dedicated to an information dump. It’s necessary for the plot, yet it feels a bit clunky.

Conclusion: Cyberforce/Hunter-Killer #2 is well worth picking up. Kenneth Rocafort’s artwork is great and Mark Waid’s definitely got some cool ideas driving the story along.

BW Offshore has selected Industrial and Financial Systems (IFS) to provide business application solutions. In 2007 BW Offshore acquired Advanced Production and Loading AS (APL), a leader in the development, fabrication and sale of turret mooring systems and related technologies for the oil and gas industry. APL has been an IFS customer since 2004, and BW Offshore aims to facilitate the merger and streamline the companies’ business processes by standardizing on IFS Applications.

BW Offshore will implement the IFS project-based business applications to support its major business processes, including project management, material management, human resources, financials and after-sales. The objective is to have an integrated solution covering all aspects of its business, and improving project performance through increased control over the five key success factors for project-based companies; risk, cost, cash, time and resources. The add-on implementations have started in Brazil, and the next step is to continue with the Oslo office, and have the whole group consolidated on IFS Applications during the second quarter of 2010.

Fritz Ekloff, BW Offshore’s Sr. VP of Corporate IT & Systems, said: “We chose to standardize on IFS Applications based on IFS’ focus and knowledge from project-based industries, the rich project functionality of IFS Applications and its global consulting reach. We share the view on how to apply a standard business application solution in a project environment.”

BW Offshore’s customers include major national oil companies such as Statoil, Petrobas and PEMEX, as well as Aker-Solutions, PGS and Teekay.

Anatole Kaletsky, former such a loyal Labourite, has seemingly abandoned his previous adulation for all things red, and instead appears to have embraced the Liberal Democrats as the “dominant part of the Left” in view of the desperately shoddy state of British socialism. I rarely agree with him, but for once I’m willing to buy this particular does of rose-tinted wishful thinking. Mr Kaletsky reckons that it is entirely possible for the Lib Dems to unseat Labour in a “neat reversal of the process that began almost 100 years ago with the defeat of David Lloyd George” – personally, I would like nothing more than the Labour party to fall from first to third place in the Commons pecking order, in part because I think that the relevance of the Labour party, its role of sticking up for the working class, has ended through the simple disappearance of the demographic to which they appeal. Indeed, Prime Minister Brown has had to ‘discover’ the middle class in an attempt to find someone in the UK for Labour policy to target – a hollow ploy, given how long the middle class have borne the brunt of punitive government policy, regardless of party creed or colour.

Mr Kaletsky’s other point, about the need for public service provision to be made much more cost-effective, is one that rings true at most points on the political spectrum, apart from (officially) the New Labour part. Reducing departmental budgets by 8-10pc to rein in UK public finances (as the IFS and Treasury both envisage) is hardly a drastic requirement – and again, I agree with Mr Kaletsky’s assertion that the private sector would be able to provide such a cut with no problem whatsoever. The focus, assuming the need for a state to provide certain ‘crucial’ services on the grounds that they are/should be public goods (and those who know me know I do not necessarily buy this assumption), needs to be finding ways to provide the same services without so much waste behind the scenes. All three main party leadership tiers are social democrats – ‘wet’ Tory Cameronites, increasingly leftish if ineffective Lib Dems and failed-free-marketeer New Labourites – unlike, I suspect, a growing number of UK citizens, and at least two of them have the right idea where public services are concerned.

So I look forward to a return of the days where Liberals and Conservatives faced each other across the dispatch-box – just with rather better suffrage, no Empire, and more devolution… oh, and a state-dependent underclass to manage somehow. Not quite Gladstone and Disraeli, but the principle’s there…

Classic trucks can have their ride greatly improved with the replacement of the original front end w

Classic trucks can have their ride greatly improved with the replacement of the original front end with a modern independent front suspension. This is something that can be done with almost any type of classic car or old truck.

The main reason for the installation of an independent front suspension on your old truck is to improve the quality of the ride but it can also be done in order to lower the suspension and give the old truck a totally different look. Depending on the type of front end you choose, your old truck will also have a wider stance.

There are several types and models of independent front suspension systems available for sale in the United States. For Chevy trucks made between 1947 and 1955 one of the easiest ways is to get the front end of the C10 series Chevy trucks made between 1973 and 1987. The assembly unbolts and comes down as a complete unit and can then be bolted to the frame of the old Chevy truck. The whole steering assembly can also be installed to the old truck. This type of suspension is very rugged, has disc brakes and will last forever on classic trucks and is the suspension we have installed in our 1954 Chevy pickup. But beware: although this is a relatively easy adaptation it can’t be done by an amateur. You will have to take careful measurements of the two frames even before you remove the suspension from the donor C10 truck, especially the steering components if you want to do a good job.

Another type of suspension which has been used in both Ford and Chevy old trucks used to be found in the old AMC Pacer automobile of the late 1970s. This type of suspension also has the advantage of being a complete unit that you can unbolt from the donor car and bolt to the frame of the old truck. A kit for this adaptation is available for sale at many old truck part companies. Among the advantages of this type of suspension is the fact that it comes with front disc brakes and rack-and-pinion steering. The installation of the Pacer suspension is easier to do then the installation of the C10 suspension, but there are a few problems here too. First, it is very difficult to find a Pacer suspension nowadays. The car went out of production almost three decades ago and it wasn’t produced in large quantities to begin with. And even if you find one of these suspensions it will be difficult to get the bushings and other components you’ll need to rebuild it.

Another option to improve the ride of classic trucks is to install a modern IFS system produced specifically for your brand and model of old truck. There are several companies that do this and their systems are the best you can find, with disc brakes, rack-and-pinion power steering and coil over springs. They are the best and they are also the most expensive. Their prices start a little over US$ 1,000 and go all the up to almost US$ 3,000. But if you can afford one of these you’ll be rewarded with the best type of independent front suspension available for your old truck. This type of independent front suspension is available for classic cars too.

The Mustang II type of independent front suspension is also a great option for old trucks. You can either find a Ford Mustang II and use its suspension or buy this type of front end ready to install in your old truck. It is one of the strongest you can get and the quality of the ride will make you feel you’re driving a car.

This final post on the DEE09 conference follows on from looking at how Sherlock Holmes can be used in economics education and how to combine technology, research and the financial crisis into economics teaching to consider the conference keynotes.

John Sloman of the Economics Network in conversation with Robert Chote of the Institute for Fiscal Studies

Robert Chote is Director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies and despite his self effacing introduction that he is a journalist who has seen the economic light, he delivered an analysis of Fiscal Policy and the Crisis that any economist would have been proud of.

Chote began by suggesting that the crisis we are currently in would have been regarded as a bizarre happening from a parallel universe that might have been a theoretical sidebar in textbook a few years ago.

Robert Chote of the IFS at the DEE conference

He went on to outline the role counterfactuals are going to play in the analysis of the crisis – what would have happened without various policy interventions – we won’t know for sure, but he suggested that the temporary VAT cut may produce 20 years of PhDs!

Turning to the specifics of the crisis, he characterised the British stimulus package as short and small by international standards, showed that there will be more borrowing and more structural debt, with long term debt not returning to pre-crisis levels until 2030.

With the economy set to be 5% less productive, falls in share and house prices locked in, plus a less productive financial sector the IFS view seems to be that we are in for two terms of pain, seemingly regardless of who wins the next election.

The return to balance is focussed around spending cuts with 80% of the burden falling there and just 20% coming through tax rises.

The various tinkerings with tax rates makes the schedule for 2011-2012 look like the side of a train or Battersea power station ie not something you would find in any economic model.

Do income tax rates look more like a train or Battersea power station?

He reflected on his experience as an employer of economics graduates and noted a wide variation in their writing skills / ability to explain economics to a wider audience. He exhorted academics to do more to get students engaged with areas of economics where there is no consensus.

The other keynotes featured Rachel Lomax former Deputy Governor of the Bank of England who told delegates that looking at price stability and individual institutions will not be enough to prevent another crisis – but that with no unanimity about new tools to combat future crises, economics needs creative thinkers now more than ever.

Vicky Pryce of the Government Economic Service emphasised the importance of not separating micro and macroeconomics completely – policy interventions may depend on the spending decisions of individual consumers – so the economics graduates of tomorrow need to make swift judgements from incomplete information if they are to make an impact on policy.

All three keynote speakers noted the rise in interest in economics the crisis has sparked. Applications to universities are up 20% and the IFS have gone electronic to cope with the number of applications they receive.

It seems as though academia may see an upside to the crisis after all.
