Overview http://ifw.bside.com/2009/films/casestudydigitalfilmmakingfeaturingentrenos_ifw2009 At firs

Overview http://ifw.bside.com/2009/films/casestudydigitalfilmmakingfeaturingentrenos_ifw2009

At first I was planning on grabbing a gyro for this panel, like many cineastes, the idea of exhibition on a cell phone doesn’t appeal to me. However, since this panel was part of “Filmmaking 2.0″ (the unifying theme of the panels on Monday), I decided to embrace the spirit of the day, stable my persnickety tendencies, and give it a go.

I’m glad I did.

First off: this is an interesting experiment with A-list talent touted as the first “major feature” released cross-platform and debuting on mobile devices. Or something like that. In truth, it’s hard to wade through all the buzzwords and flap surrounding the endeavor, mainly because it really is so new. Suffice to say that there are some serious industry vets behind it that are pushing the envelope, and, along with it, the next generation of filmmaking.

Is it a cool concept? Hells yes. Will anyone buy it today? Probably not. Is it ten years ahead of its time? Probably so. But the folks involved are positioning themselves to be ahead of the game for tomorrow’s theatre-goers, who probably won’t be theatre-goers at all, but will be comfortable viewing this kind of content on their mobile devices. Is it for me or anyone over 30 who enjoys theatrical exhibition? No. Is there a way to make money on mobile delivery and use that to drive sales and other ancillary revenue streams? I think so. Maybe not today, but certainly in the future.

And for their spirit of derring do, I have to give the folks behind it a big up.

I’m not going to lie, I have yet to watch any of it. The concept, a murder-mystery at a high-end fashion show as caught by a kid on his cell phone, really isn’t my cup of tea. But I’ll certainly keep an eye out to see what develops with this groundbreaking concept. My gut feeling, and I’m guessing those behind it as well, is that it’s a proof-of-concept outing that will become the norm, for some audiences, in five-to-ten years.

“Filmmakers don’t need to hire 42nd West to implement a digital marketing campaign,” a surprise statement coming from 42 West’s Bladmaiar Norman who spoke on the panel Crowd Sourcing: Building Fans, Bloggers & Press Allies.

“Filmmakers can be successful on their own.” Indeed, there are plenty of tools

to help get filmmakers started. One such tool is www.indiegogo.com, which gives fans

the vehicle to experience, influence and fuel the projects they want to see created.

Independent Film Week, Sept. 19 – 23, 2009, New York City

Panelists agree that the paradigm for how movies get made is shifting. As discussed on the panel “The Times They are A-Changin,” filmmakers can no longer count on finding funding via foreign sales based on actors attachments and/or government funding for the arts. Furthermore, European television money has dried up as according to Killer Film’s Christine Vachon, you have to be citizen in that country to be the recipient of that money.

The real currency is the audience and as such Workbook Project’s Lance Weiler has created tools such as www.dataportability.org to help filmmakers sustain audiences in a meaningful way. Ted Hope believes that filmmakers can gain traction if they have five thousand fans (of his/her work). For example, his new project “Super” got funded because via Twitter, he was able to find out how many people follow Rainn Wilson, who is attached star in the film.

The Workbook Project isn’t the only tool that is bringing people together. Founded by Killer Film’s Christine Vachon and Kenneth Woo, Massify.com is a film production community that helps filmmakers connect, collaborate and get films made. Working with sponsors/partners, Massify has already hosted one contest, which resulted in the production of a fifteen minute short film. Next week Massify will announce a new contest.

The Times They Are A-Changin panel.

This is That’s Ted Hope argues that filmmakers need to take advantage of said opportunities. “Filmmakers should be making shorts and using them to build their audience so that when they make features, they can bring that audience with them.”

Along those lines, “filmmakers need to create an on-going conversation with fans.” He provides “District 9” as example. Before it was a feature, it was a short that generated millions of hits on the Internet. In the case of the short film “Spider,” Ted wrote about it on his Hammer to Nail website (www.hammertonail.com), which resulted in the filmmaker contacting him.

For the filmmaker who does not have Ted writing about his/her short film, it is imperative to have others buzzing about your work. Ultimately distribution of content will come from your audience. But they will only become an outlet if they are involved / engaged. Transparency around the process (re: audience building) is key. That and making sure that if you are taking, you are also giving back to the filmmaking community.

Panelists agree that you can do what you want but you need to do it well if you want to cultivate a following for your work. IFC Digital Media’s Craig Parks advises that filmmakers should know their end game. Is it to get viewership? To get a deal with a studio? Regardless, panelists highly recommended that burgeoning filmmakers build their brand on the Internet if they are serious about having a career as content producers. As Anslem points out — “studios want to know that you have an audience for your work. And what better place to get things out there and hone your skills than on the Internet.” Jeff Marks of Bright Red Pixels remarks that the barrier to entry is low since it does not cost much to create content for the Internet. That said, the challenge is to get your work seen. “You have to be comfortable promoting yourself” says Blip.tv’s Eric Mortenson. “So long as the thing you put out tomorrow is better than the thing you put out today, you’ll find an audience.”

In other news, our website is officially up and running. Check it out at www.rjdproentertainment.com. Here you will find info about us as well as the submission and license agreement forms under the “Submissions” section. Yep, that’s right folks…we are now accepting short film submissions. Go ahead, don’t be shy.

Last but not least RJD Pro Entertainment will be reporting from Independent Film Week in NYC (Sept 19 – 24). Be on the lookout for articles summarizing what was discussed on the panels and photos from parties and such.

Akhirnya, jadi juga main-main ke Singapura. Tapi seperti biasa, kalo bukan diatas kasur sendiri (sekalipun jelek) ga bakalan bisa tidur. Terpaksa deh, semaleman begadang.

Tapi toh badai tlah berlalu.

Perjalanan dilanjutkan pake MRT (em ar ti, hehehe).

Ga pakai alasan, “Kalo pulang kerjanya udah kemaleman, boro-boro mau bersihin rumah” Jadi, sekali lagi, kita memang banyak ‘alasan’ akhirnya menghambat ‘kemauan dan kemajuan’

Soalnya subuh ga terdengar adzan. Kalau sudah begini, gue kangen Indonesia.
