Gideon Gono, the governor of Zimbabwe’s Reserve Bank, won the Ig Nobel prize for Mathematics in 2009

Gideon Gono, the governor of Zimbabwe’s Reserve Bank, won the Ig Nobel prize for Mathematics in 2009. He was recognized for:

“giving people a simple, everyday way to cope with a wide range of numbers — from very small to very big — by having his bank print bank notes with denominations ranging from one cent ($.01) to one hundred trillion dollars ($100,000,000,000,000)”.

In 2008, Zimbabwe’s peak hyperinflation rate reached 79,600,000,000 %(79.6 billion %) per month. At this rate, nominal price of things would double every 24 hours. Hungary, in 1945-46, experienced inflation rate of 41.9 quadrillion percent (41,900,000,000,000,000)per month, a record unsurpassed: na bhuto, na bhavishyati.

Other Ig Nobel Prizes are just as interesting and deserving.

The PEACE prize went to Stephen Bolliger, Stephen Ross, Lars Oesterhelweg, Michael Thali and Beat Kneubuehl of the University of Bern, Switzerland:

“for determining — by experiment — whether it is better to be smashed over the head with a full bottle of beer or with an empty bottle”.

And the Economics Prize was awarded to the directors, executives, and auditors of four Icelandic Banks: Kaupthing Bank, Landsbanki, Glitnir Bank, and Central Bank of Iceland:

“for demonstrating that tiny banks can be rapidly transformed into huge banks, and vice versa — and for demonstrating that similar things can be done to an entire national economy”.

So it’s award season in the scientific world………and it’s a biggie….The Nobel Prize. Every year since

So it’s award season in the scientific world………and it’s a biggie….The Nobel Prize. Every year since 1901 the Nobel Prize has been awarded for physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and for peace, and from 1968 the Sveriges Riksbank Prize for Economic Sciences was also introduced. Winners take home a medal, a diploma and a big fat cheque for 10m Swedish Kronor (~£800,000)…oh and the small bonus of international recognition for your life’s hard work.

So this year the science gongs go to:

Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine; jointly to Elizabeth H. Blackburn (University of California, USA), Carol W. Greider (John Hopkins University, USA) and Jack W. Szostak (Harvard Medical School, USA) for the discovery of “how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the enzyme telomerase”

Nobel Prize for Physics; half to Charles K. Kao (Standard Telecommunication Technologies and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong) for “groundbreaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibres for optical communication” and half shared between William S. Boyle and George E. Smith (both from Bell Laboratories, USA) for “the invention of an imaging semiconductor circuit- the CCD sensor”

Nobel Prize for Chemistry; jointly to Venkatraman Ramakrishnan (MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology Cambridge, UK), Thomas A. Steitz (Yale University, USA) and Ada E. Yonath (Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel) for “studies of the structure and function of the ribosome”.

In layman’s terms that is;

Physiology of Medicine; understanding how the ends of DNA molecules are maintained (“just like the plastic tips on shoelaces”) which has important implications for cancer and ageing.

Physics; revolutionising modern communications by transmitting light along glass fibres over huge distances (it’s how we get our broadband) and the CCD is the eye of digital cameras (it’s in the camera in our mobile phones).

Chemistry; understanding the mechanism of how cells make proteins, which is absolutely fundamental to life.

Now, let’s not forget the other important prize of the year…..The Ig Nobel’s (the website alone is worth a look for the picture of Nobel Laureates wearing one of this year’s inventions, a bra/facemask, and a video about the first recorded case of a homosexual necrophiliac duck….yes really).

The “Igs” are awarded to scientists whose work “first makes people laugh, and then makes people think”. This year’s highlights include prizes for:

Peace; shared between Stephan Bolliger, Steffen Ross, Lars Oesterhelweg, Michael J. Thali and Beat P. Kneubuehl from the University of Bern (Switzerland), for their work on whether it is better to be smashed over the head with a full or empty bottle of beer.

Veterinary Medicine; shared between Catherine Douglas (nee Bertenshaw) and Peter Rowlinson from Newcastle University (UK), for their work showing that dairy cows given a name produce more milk.

Physics; shared between Katherine K. Whitcome (University of Cincinnatti, USA), Daniel E. Lieberman (Harvard University, USA) and Liza J. Shapiro (University of Texas, USA), for their analysis of how pregnant women stay upright and don’t topple over all the time.

Biology; shared between Fumiaki Taguchi, Song Guofu, and Zhang Guanglei from Kitasato University (Japan) for their work showing that bacteria from giant panda poo can reduce kitchen waste mass by 90%.

Greetings, Earthlings. This week on the HSW blogs, we’ve been covering the Ig Nobel Prizes. These are awards given in different fields of research, much like the Nobel Prize. The key to the Ig Nobels is that all of the research, while unusual, is valid and real. There may be a tongue planted firmly in cheek with the awards, but they insist that they’re not making fun of anyone. It’s a celebration of science in all its wackiness. So the handsome and dashing Robert Lamb, fresh off his trip to Asia, had the swell idea of covering this year’s winners. You can find the other posts here, here, here and here.

In the fields of medicine and public health we have a couple of interesting bits of research. For medicine, this year’s winner was Donald L. Unger, a physician in Thousand Oaks, Calif. We all have heard that cracking knuckles is bad for your joints and can lead to arthritis. Well Dr. Unger did a little research of his own with a simple test — crack the knuckles of his left hand only, never his right. Sounds like no big deal right? Consider that he did this every day FOR 60 YEARS and you may have some more appreciation for his method. Well done, doctor. So what was the result? File it under “old wive’s tale” as there was no difference in his fingers.

The winner in the public health category was Elena N. Bodnar, of Hinsdale, Ill., and Ukraine, and Raphael C. Lee and Sandra Marijan, of Chicago, Ill. These three took it upon themselves to do something to combat the fears of biological terrorism. Did they create a portable bomb shelter? No. An anthrax kit for the home? Negative. They invented a brassiere that quickly converts into two gas masks. More than meets the eye indeed. Well done, folks.

So that’s that. Robert will be wrapping things up tomorrow on the Science Stuff blog.

Reading is fundamental:

by Toby J. Swaford, K-12 Education Coordinator

For those of you unfamiliar with the Ig Nobel, it’s a bit like the Nobel Prize, minus the generous cash award, the trip to Switzerland, and any of the gravitas.

According to Marc Abrahams, editor of the Annals of Improbable Research, and founder of the Ig Nobel Prize, the prize is awarded for “achievements that cannot or should not be reproduced.” Abrahams warns that you should “Examine that phrase carefully. It covers a lot of ground. It says nothing as to whether a thing is good or bad, commendable or pernicious.” What this means is that after something is discovered or invented for the first time, it can not be discovered or invented for the first time, again.

For example, take the case of 1996 winner of the Ig Noble Art Prize, Don Featherstone. While the name may not ring a bell, chances are you’ve seen his work. Don Featherstone is the creator of the pink plastic flamingo, which absolutely qualifies under the “cannot be repeated” clause. Once the pink plastic flamingo was invented, it could never be invented again. Although, growing up in Florida, I saw many people attempt to improve upon the concept, including a variety of holiday outfits designed for the plasticized Ciconiiformes. So far, there is no Ig Nobel Prize for flamingo fashion, but who knows what the future may hold.

The Ig, as it’s affectionately known, isn’t designed to honor the best or the worst like so many other awards, instead it celebrates the muddled middle in which most of us exist. It acknowledges not that you have accomplished something for the betterment, or detriment of humankind; but simply that you have accomplished some thing. Every year, about half of the prizes are awarded to people that have done something useful, albeit somewhat laughable at first glance. The other half is reserved for work that is considered … well, questionable at best.

Some of the research that has garnered the Ig in the past includes that of two time prize winner, Jacques Benveniste (Ig Noble Chemistry Prize, 1991 & 1998) who claimed that water molecules not only have memories, but that those memories could be digitally transmitted over telephone lines. Benveniste’s research was never successfully reproduced, but is still one of the tenants held by many homeopaths as to the “validity” of their work. Likewise, Louis Kervran won the Ig Nobel Prize for Physics in 1993 for his research on chicken eggs, and his attempt to demonstrate that the calcium in the eggshell is created in a process of cold fusion. Needless to say, both the claims of smart water and nuclear chickens are dubious at best.

Then there’s the group of behavioral scientists that were able to train pigeons to discriminate between the paintings of Picasso and Monet. On the surface, producing avian art snobs may seem kind of goofy, but a deeper look can show insight into the effects of conditioning and reinforcement on both bird and human behavior. Other valid research has included that of Anders Barheim and Hogne Sandvik, who won the prize for biology by demonstrating that sour cream stimulated the appetite of leeches, while beer had an intoxicating effect and garlic often proved fatal. Not only did Barheim and Hogne successfully petition to win the Ig, they also helped solve the conundrum of what to serve, and not serve, whilst entertaining leeches.

While, understandably, not everyone loves the Ig Nobel Prize, many have fully embraced it and the spirit in which it is given. Each year, many Nobel Laureates attend the ceremony to present the awards in various categories, with the event being a lighthearted prelude to the actual Nobel Prizes awarded a few weeks later.

This year’s winners include Donald Unger, who for 60 years diligently cracked the knuckles on his left hand, but not his right, to disprove his mother’s theory that it would lead to him developing arthritis. The Ig Nobel Prize for peace went to a group of forensic pathologists at the University of Bern in Switzerland, who researched whether it was better to be hit with a full or empty beer bottle in a bar room brawl. The physics prize went to researchers from the Universities of Cincinnati, Texas, and Harvard for their paper, Fetal Load and the Evolution of Lumbar Lordosis in Bipedal Hominins, which explored the reasons why pregnant women don’t tip over. Falling into the dubious category was Elena Bodnar, the winner of the prize for public health. Ms. Bodnar’s contribution was a brassiere, which could be quickly removed in an emergency and converted into a pair of gas masks — one to wear, and one to share … apparently.

This past two weeks saw two Prizes being awarded. One is the prestigious Nobel Prizes while the other is the preposterous Ig Nobel Prizes. Obviously one is for genuine research and the other is for the goofy research. One for advancement of mankind and the other well, one can never be sure how useful the knowledge will be. The line dividing geniuses and goofballs are blurring all the time.

Bras were found to be good for emergency gas mask! Well we will never think about that will we?And cracking your knuckles does not cause arthritis? These were awarded with the Ig Nobel prizes for public health and medicine.

In the meantime, one would think Nobel Prizes for Physics would most likely be awarded to highfalutin highbrow theorists in creme de la creme universities that you and I would not even have a chance to understand what they do or say. I was wrong and surprisingly pleased to find out Charles Kao, a Polytechnic graduate was actually recognized by the committee for discovering the efficient fiber optics usage. Polytechnics graduates are trained for practical applications while universities graduates are for research first and perhaps development of applications later.

my hubby sent me an email with a very interesting article from the telegraph about the most ”pointless” research: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/science-news/6223831/Pointless-research-top-10-Ig-Nobel-award-winners-for-silly-science.html

kind of made me wonder: which “pointless” research some 200 years ago is now part of our lifestyle? i mean, i’m pretty sure when ben franklin was going around with a kite under a thunderstorm A LOT of people thought ”ok, crazy man… you win. now go and enter your home and stop running around screaming when it’s raining!’.

the invention – or discovery – of some many things had probably the most stupid types of curiosity behind them. for instance, i know that the few brazilian servicemen who went to fight during the second world war used newspaper between their socks and boots to keep humidity and cold far from their feet. crazy as it may sound, it was one of the first types of insulation - and servicemen from other countries began to follow the brazilians on their crazy quest for old newspaper. or the fact that penicilin was just “found” because alexander fleming left his samples out of the fridge…

i get the point that the UK need some specific type of research and the government is willing to pay for researchers to investigate those specific things. but i think the main force that drives discoveries that revolutionize the way we live are the ones that begin with a very dubious idea – or, at least, some sort of crazy action!

The Harvard-Radcliffe Society of Physics Students.

This year’s Ig Nobel awards

Report in the Guardian about this year’s Ig Nobel awards. A couple are rather good:

Veterinary medicine prize
Catherine Douglas and Peter Rowlinson at Newcastle University’s school of agriculture share the award for the groundbreaking discovery that giving cows names such as Daisy increases their milk yield. “It’s the highlight of my career,” said Douglas. “The work amused the public, but it addressed a serious issue about the welfare of animals and points to an easy way to improve yields by reducing stress in cattle.”

Mathematics prize
Awarded to Gideon Gono, governor of Zimbabwe’s Reserve Bank, for giving people a simple way of dealing with a wide range of numbers. Gono ordered his bank to print notes with denominations ranging from one cent to one hundred trillion dollars.

The one about police in Ireland misreading Polish driving licences must be a joke though. Fuller details and references are on the improbable research site.

Och vinnaren är…

Irländska polismyndigheten kammade hem årets litteraturpris under Ig Nobel-prisutdelningen i torsdags.

The bacteria extract converts the refuse into water and carbon dioxide. Fumiaki Taguchi, Song Guofu, and Zhang Guanglei were presented with an Ig Nobel prize (parody of the Nobel prize) this year for their efforts.

At the Ig Nobel ceremony, which was held in Harvard, 72-year-old Taguchi said he initially guessed that panda poop might have a special kind of bacteria due to the mammals’ ingestion of large volumes of bamboo. Isn’t poop great? It serves all kinds of purposes, from burgers to keeping our environment green!
