Les cimes dispersées les oiseaux du soir
Au chevet de la rue
Les échos féminins des baisers

A pleines mains la pluie
Sous les feuilles sous les lanternes

Still the only thing fresh in this town is the manure. The stagnation of inherited inbred ideology

Still the only thing fresh in this town is the manure. The stagnation of inherited inbred ideology lingers with this aire. To some, this night of memorabilia is their only experience of a dream. Long lost hopes, from the gates of a requiem walking hand in hand with a Coors light and some road kill at their side. For others, it was like the day after their cousin married outside of their race… being careful with their words, afraid to ask real questions… None the less, no real care to take a step out.

After the bar was spit up on by the drooling outsiders, the classmate’s reunited and separated once again into their old cliques.

Lacking any real truth, with manipulating, superficial honesty, they go back and forth with attacks on each other and those they feel threatened by. Curtness and lack of propriety in their values and morals with each breath out, they seem to be warm and cozy in their disgusting dialog. The pot calling the kettle black. Gossiping about gossipers. Tragedy of life being so pitiful is the only reality here that is spoken, though the directors of this play haven’t the faintest idea of how the script is as old as their addicted, handed down, rewinded and rewinded ”original ideas” that they all share and pretend are so original. Each actor plays the part of enabling this to continue, playing ignorant and growing older.

I sit to wait for the tow truck. Keys in the trunk, sister in His bed. The one exception I saw all night and I offered her to him, best indeed. To keep myself from a weakness that could bring this place… this heap of a town closer to me. I doubt there would be any power from him, but I stay careful of tragedy and a trip into hell.

“A great opinion spoken with poor grammar is like a steak sandwich on a dog shit bun.”

As I sit here at my computer, I look across the street at the little sign that Will had made to hang above his new store. I’m sure Will was really excited when he first saw it go up. There’s a certain amount of pride involved with seeing your name on a sign. Will sells antiques and vintage stuff; or so his little sign says, I’ve never actually been in the store. Now, apparently Will was really sick as a young child. He must have had leukemia, jaundice, MS, or something like that, because he obviously missed a few years of elementary school. You see, Will doesn’t know how to use an apostrophe properly. I’d bet you that if I asked him why his sign says “Wills Good Buy’s”, and why there’s an apostrophe between the ‘Y’ and the ‘S’, he’d say “the word ‘buys’ is plural, man!”, to which I’d retort, “Will, you’re a fucking idiot. Have a good time with your yard-less yard sale.”

I don’t want to get into the most common grammar mistakes I see and hear. As much as I’d like to write a short story about an everyday encounter with each, I don’t have the time or the patience for it. I’ll leave that for the comments section. Here’s an interesting fact, though: As of 2005, Fortune 500 companies were spending $3billion annually teaching their employees basic English. Wow.

I believe that the way you speak says as much about you as what you’re saying. That being the case, most people I come into contact with on a daily basis present themselves as lazy, ignorant assholes. They might be intelligent people, they might have credible opinions, they might have something important to say to the world, but because of their poor grammar, the rest of the intelligent, credible world will never know.

It’s not necessary to speak or write anywhere near perfectly. With the onset of nonstop IMing, TXTing and emailing, the world has become a pretty informal place to live, speak and write in. That being said, if you don’t care enough about the way you present yourself to learn how to use apostrophes, conjugate basic verbs, or the difference between there, their and they’re, then don’t expect anyone worth their salt to take you seriously. That includes me.

(Taken from a previous blog, More Thoughts on Race and Online Dating.)

It is amazing to me that people can claim that racism no longer exists in America. I know that some narrow-minded individuals believe that they did their duty to eliminate that dark elephant in America’s room by electing Barack Obama, but they merely draped a giant cloth over it.

If you want to see just how racist Americans can still be, look no further than the African-American community. We are gruesomely racist against each other to the point of holding each other back. And nothing is more ignorant and hateful than to call a black person white. Bouji, Oreo, Uncle Tom: those are some of the harsh nicknames we have for our own brothers and sisters that don’t comply with society’s view of what a black person should be. That self-hatred is damaging.

The image many people have of African-Americans.

I’ve dealt with ignorant people that had ill-conceived ideas of black people my whole life. From kids wondering why I didn’t listen to rap music, to being mistaken for British because I pronounce my words, I’ve had my own uphill battle with those that grouped black people by media-forced images. Some of my friends have joked with me about this. I’ve had black peers in junior high and high school pretend to be my friends while hurting me emotionally and physically, making me the butt of their jokes. Even my ex-girlfriend (a Hungarian woman) made an unfortunate “joke” about me acting white despite me being black. Her comment hurt more than nearly any other, as I gave her my love and trust, and got an ignorant comment in return.

Some would say "Oreo." I say "jackass."

And then there are those that have called me that delightful n-word simply based on the color of my skin. Those were the worst experiences of all.

I wish that I was making this up.

No matter where someone lives, how they act or what they like, they will always be an African-American. Those roots can never be escaped. Black people that “act white” is an unfortunate viewpoint of a person so shallow, ignorant and with little insight, it magnifies the problems that we ALL face as a culture — not just the black community, which has a deep-seated problem with putting down people of their own heritage due to low self-esteem brought on by self-hatred from themselves, their families, friends, the black community and negative stereotypes. And that is just the tip of the iceberg.

Some of you are wandering through life, flaunting your liberalism, thinking everything is just grand. You have always believed that someone else will provide all of your wants and needs. However, lately you have started to think that maybe, just maybe there is something that you are not being told. Maybe things aren’t as rosy as you have been led to believe. Everything seems to be part of a matrix…

So what is the Matrix? It is the world of liberal lies constructed by our liberal, communist/socialist government that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth.

While researching security awareness programmes recently I came across this paper in the SANS Institute Infosec Reading Room. The author Chris Garrett shares his ideas about improving security decision making and how this is fundamental to the creation of security aware corporate cultures.

Garrett references many academic papers from various fields including business, economics, psychology and of course information technology. The paper is well worth reading all the way through but for me, the epiphany came only about a third of the way into it. To quote directly from the text:

As the research indicates, the vast majority of security breaches originate from human actions. There are a number of potential reasons for this:

People are poorly trained and have poor security awareness

People are not motivated to perform at the required level

People are malicious and deliberately expose the organization to risk

People are aware of the problem of security but as managers and employees make poor decisions

Try to ignore the fact that Garrett gives no actual evidence to back this assertion up (because we know this is how security people think anyway) and step back to think about what is actually being said.

I read it as this: Most security breaches occur because people are ignorant, lazy, evil or stupid.

Now it may be okay for programmers and service desk operators to have a view that users are the only thing that gets in the way of a perfect IT operation, but security professionals are paddling up the wrong creek if they think this way.

Setting aside the lack of academic rigor (which died with web 1.0) Garrett has presented one of the big problems facing information security professionals. People are not dumb, or lazy, or even naturally defiant. It’s us who make security too hard. We write overblown policies full of technical jargon which tell people not to do things they never thought of anyway, we confront them with confusing technical controls that require superhuman memory skills or saintlike patience, and we poo poo any attempts to ‘get the job done’ any other way than our own outdated, poorly researched, non user-tested policies allow. And then we accuse them of sabotage when they say ’stuff this’ and find a better, more efficient way which actually works.

To be fair Garrett goes on to make a very good case for training people to be better decision makers, but all the while I was finishing the paper I had this feeling like poor old user x was staggering around still recovering from the sucker punch back on page 4. And maybe this is how our users feel, like they’ve been ambushed by the security guys.

For anyone out there who runs an awareness programme for their organisation, from now on try to avoid patronizing staff or treating them like naughty children. They are not ignorant, lazy, stupid, malicious or even misguided regardless of what ‘conventional’ information security wisdom says. For surely if it were true, we would have found a reliable way to mitigate those threats by now?

“It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.” – G. H. Hardy

If this is the case. How do you transfer the balance of intelligence to much needed causes than the herd?

“It is impossible to defeat an ignorant man in argument.”

By definition impossible means never being able to defeat said man. Is it possible to educate said man? how do you educate to prevent ignorance?

These two quotes have driven my mind mad all week. That coupled with my curiosity to watch how people react in times of stress. I am not sure if I have written/alluded to this before, but I am always fascinated by how people conform or rebel in groups. People can be like lab rats fight based on their personal assessment and will to live.

Business School

Not that I want to compare lab rats to graduate students but I think I have too. You drop 60 motivated students in a classroom to sink or swim, and they will swim or at least sink trying. In the process to stay alive they will also lean on you to stay above water. They don’t care if that means you have less air or are even submerged under the water. they will do what they need to do to survive and prosper. No other place will you be in a room with 60 very similar people with their initial instinct to be divide and conquer. You know when you walk in that room that admissions has already sorted you as the best and the brightest to attend that program. At least by one standard deviation, everyone in that room had tested and scored very close to the same. Otherwise you wouldn’t of been admitted. I recently heard of a study where they dropped a lab rat into two exactly the same containers in shape, size and, water level. The only different is that one will be placed in a dark room and the other will in a lighted room. The rat in the dark will give up after 30 seconds of swimming, while the one exposed to light in the otherwise same conditions will fight and swim for over 4 hours. An effort equaled to 500 times greater.

What is the fundamental difference? The rat in the dark has no hope, the exposure to light creates an inherent driver of motivation to survive. Similar to graduate students they are all the same, they are all in the same container and they are all in the same amount of water. Unlike the test environment where there is one person controlling the exposure to light, instead all of your peers are the ones with their hands on the switch. Students will shut off their peers light as they compete and dismiss those who they feel don’t their equal. (Which is interesting because an admissions board has declared all of them the same and equal). It is the nature and conditions of their surroundings.

California Sports Fan

This sports fan is always an interesting topic for me. I was serenaded by the California cry daily when I arrived here. “Where else can you surf in the morning and drive to ski in the afternoon.” This mindset is why very few professional sports teams survive let alone thrive. Who have survived regularly LA Lakers because of “SHOWTIME” the flash and glamour drive the market. LA Doyers (Dodgers) because they were pioneers.

Who does not thrive: LA Kings, Anaheim Ducks, San Diego anything. Why? Is it because California produces more flakey people than any where else? Is it because the Northeast is more hard core than any where else? I am sure these stereotypes have a hair of truth, but the reality we are all a product of our environment.

Why is Southern California filled with more transplants (yes transplants, not implants) than any where else? Because it is an active community. The gym after work is a social standard not a new years resolution. Tanning, running, biking, surfing are weekend rituals because they can be. It is november 7th and I am in a robe and not much else and I am fine. If I was still in NYC I would be buried in layers and a neck deep in adult beverages because there is not much to do but watch sports and drink beers. That is the product of that environment, that is why people seem/claim to be harder works in NYC. They have no choice but to stay at work or indoors to support their team instead of attempting to brave the cold. As much as I get frustrated during NY Yankee playoff baseball because I am in the heart of LA Angel red. It isn’t because the Angels are not a well coached team (Except in game 1,2 or 5 in the 2009 ALCS). It is because the Angels fans are short sighted and limited in their exposure because of their balanced social and sporting life.

City Life/Dating

Big city dating is survival of the fittest. I saw a great article in the NY Times on how living in Manhattan limits your ability to date the bridge & tunnel crowd. On a map the distance between parts of Manhattan and sections of queens is about 15 miles or 20 minutes driving in most places. Because of the density of people in a city, it will take over an hour and 3 trains to visit a partner. You could be also exposed to a 100,000 singles in a radius of 15 blocks, so why would you look as far as 15 miles. Clearly it doesn’t make sense.

NYC is not easy or cheap living. It is a frenzy for most and this intoxicating concentration of choice and options can quickly limit or erase your future options. I know people who have submerged in the deep and fruitful garden of eden we call New York City, Chicago and/or San Francisco. Catching fish after fish and living it weekend after weekend. Next thing you know you are 45 years old and HBO has made a movie about you as either Carrie or Big depending on your gender.

New York!!!!
Concrete jungle where dreams are made of,
There’s nothing you can’t do,
Now you’re in New York!!!
These streets will make you feel brand new,
the lights will inspire you,
Let’s hear it for New York, New York, New York – Alicia Keys

My uncle always said that some drugs make you brand new, and a new man always wants more. It hits me like a wave where I envy this lifestyle an then I remember that the city is really just a legal drug that can consume you until it is done with you. It is amazing but extremely addictive and dangerous.

Public vs Private HS

I have had the luxury to experience both sides sort of. I grew up in the inner-boroughs of NYC seeing the diversity and melting pot of the city. There was not happy bubble or fairy tale blanket of naive bliss.

I also was moved to a suburban High School in Connecticut to a some what exclusive neighborhood. All those after school stories or TV sitcoms on how rich children act is very accurate. I like to believe that the more intimate smaller classrooms provided in the nicer some what private schools allow for a lot of exploration. Curiosity and communication can really develop a young child. It sets building blocks that could build a strong foundation. Curiosity has also killed the cat.

In public schools things happen fast and decisions are made. It can happen in both settings, but it seems that there is a greater chance for poor choices in public schools. Again it is the product of their environment. I am bias towards smaller more private schools but I know they are both as equally dangerous. Any extra time on your hands means getting into your parents booze, smokes and dirty magazines. Kids will be kids and I had the benefit or working fast and learning to hustle. Then being conditioned and sculpted in the private setting second. I don’t think a suburban kid could be dropped into a urban HS unless they have watch Michelle Pfeiffer in Dangerous Minds.

Unions

Unions by definition protect the weakest employee. They are a band of brothers that limit each others progress. I speak freely about this knowing that I was raised in a union household. They are the prototype for the herd mentality.

Definition: The term herd mentality is derived from the word “herd,” meaning group of animals, and “mentality,” implying a certain frame of mind. However the most succinct definition would be: how large numbers of people act in the same ways at the same times.

Herd behavior is distinguished from herd mentality because it applies to all animals, whereas the term “mentality” implies a uniquely human phenomenon. Herd mentality implies a fear-based reaction to peer pressure which makes individuals act in order to avoid feeling “left behind” from the group. Herd mentality is also sometimes known as “mob mentality.”

Conclusion

What was my goal with this post? I wanted to identify how herds operate in different settings.

Herd mentality describes how people are influenced by their peers to adopt certain behaviors, follow trends, and/or purchase items. Examples of the herd mentality include the early adopters of high technology products such as cell phones and iPods, as well as stock market trends, fashions in apparel, cars, home décor, etc. Social psychologists study the related topics of group intelligence, crowd wisdom, and decentralized decision making.

People in these herds are broken up into two groups, explains Friedrich Nietzsche, a philosopher who coined the phrase. One lended itself to the religious points of views- their beliefs and how those dictated their actions- while the other lended itself to influence by the media- based upon what others perceive as ‘right’ (following trends, social norms, etc.). Nietzsche perceived these two forms of subservience to be a weakness among the common man, and that the “Superman” as Nietzsche terms is the one who overcomes the values of the fallible herd.

I leave you with this. I want to circle back to my initial two quotes I posted:

“It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.” – G. H. Hardy

“It is impossible to defeat an ignorant man in argument.”

Take a minute to stop and listen. Listen to what is being said to you. Take a second to put down your iPhone or texting device. Take a minute to see if you are following or leading. Find out if you are reacting or making decisions. Find out if you are imploring change or just accepting status quo. If you really want to make a different and be an innovator of change. Step out of the majority, step out of the shadows of the “Norm”. No need to argue with an ignorant man, but there is a need to educate them to accomplish common goals. I am not saying we all have the answers, but we all have the ability to ask the questions that could lead to the answers which influence change and progress.

Species Name: Ignoramicus Stubbornius

I live in California, one of the most progressive states in the entire country, or at least I thought it was until its constituents passed Proposition 8 a year ago, which banned gay marriage. This was a real wake up call that homophobia still runs rampant in this country, and I find it a little fucking ridiculous. On Tuesday, Maine became the 31st state to shoot down the rights of gays to get married. I don’t understand what the fuck peoples’ issue is here. Yeah, yeah, yeah, the Bible apparently says that marriage is intended to be between a man and a woman. However, the Bible also says that women shalt not teach, nor hold authority positions over men (Timothy 2:11-15). Maybe the Bible isn’t right about everything, did you ever think of that? These homophobes are so deluded by their blind devotion to the word of God, that they can’t fathom that it might all be a lie. Sorry to potentially burst your bubble.

Homophobes make me sick. Look, no one is asking you guys to strap on some ass-less chaps and strut through West Hollywood singing Madonna songs, we’re simply asking that you be tolerant of people’s inalienable rights. This anti-gay mentality is no different than racism or antisemitism, and as we all know, those still run rampant in our society as well. Since these homophobes are so pathetically hellbent on trying to wipe the homosexual population from the planet, lets imagine a world where these ignoramuses didn’t exist.

In a world where homophobes weren’t around to mouth off like the dipshits that they are:

Gays would be allowed to get married and in turn be as miserable as most straight, married couples.

The derogatory term, “fag,” would go back to being slang for a cigarette in England.

The population of the United States would significantly drop which would benefit everyone. No homophobes = No traffic!

The most outspoken homophobes, ultra right wing conservatives, wouldn’t have the chance to be the biggest hypocrites in our entire society.

Harvey Milk, along with many other gay activists, would still be alive.

George W. Bush would never have been alive to become our President and ruin this country.

The number of hate crimes would dramatically decrease across the country.

People wouldn’t hate other sexual orientations because they are insecure of their own.

People would realize that the Bible is not necessarily the end all, be all of human existence.

The Catholic Church would’ve imploded, and those poor altar boys would’ve been spared the molestation by their hypocritical, homophobic priests.

These homophobic fucks need to grow up and live in the now. The gays aren’t going anywhere, so either you can accept them and let them live the life they want to live or you can go on being narrow-minded shit for brains. Would it kill us to take a cue from Europe and be a little more progressive? They’re gay! Who cares! You don’t have to engage in sodomy with them for god’s sake! If you people had one functioning brain cell, you’d realize that giving gays the right to marry wouldn’t affect you in the slightest way. Morons! I’d like to believe that the homophobes would eventually give up their crusade against gay rights, but they’re much too stubborn for that. I hate to say it, but I truly believe that the anti-gay sentiment running a muck in this country is here to stay for quite a while.

But one has to have dreams right?

A few weeks ago, I blogged about a recent OKCupid! blog about race factoring into member preference in dating. I felt that while the methods of data measurement were suspect, it opened up an interesting dialogue on racial relations and preferences in America post-Obama election.

Oh, America.

Too bad that these conversations are few and far between, as we continue to see a blatant prejudice in partner preference. In my occasional strolls online, I waded through the gutter known as the Craigslist Personals. And boy, there were some doozies that made me want to bite kneecaps.

For example, a coffee lover wrote:

I’m spending the day relaxing and regrouping. Later in the evening, I’m planning on going to one of the several Starbucks in town. And I wouldn’t mind some company that could lead to a friend with benefits and/or something more situation.

I’m a small full-figured black woman who has a job, no kids or drama, my own place, and my own car. I could just use the occasional company of a single WHITE male between the ages of 30-48. (I seem to have a thing for engineers, so that could be a bonus for you.) I work 2nd shift, so it’s sometimes hard to meet a non-Wal-mart employee and a man that is willing to make an effort to keep up an easy situation.

So I look forward to hearing from you. Please include a picture.

Damn. At age 29, I barely missed the cut-off for her requirements. Also, I’m not WHITE.

I know that people have their ideal partner picked out in their minds, but most mask their racial hang-ups behind polite remarks about “having conservative values,” “thinking that Tucson, Arizona is too liberal” (true story) and similar treats.

I think that the next online dating ad I write will weed out unwanted correspondences by including that I seek a “single female with GYNORMOUS HOO-HOOS.” After all, having big ol’ breasteses automatically means that a woman is infinitely more desirable and therefore better as a human being than someone with only decent breasticles.

You can replace the breast talk with race, and this analogy still applies.

Hey, speaking of race (STILL? I know, impatient reader. I’m almost done.), here’s another shining pillar of humanity wondering where all the sexy tall black men at:

I am trying to find out where all the sexy black men hang out. I am looking for a black man that embraces his roots and is not trying to act white. A man that can get down at the club and rub up on me or just chill and watch a game. I like a man that knows what he wants and goes after it.

*sigh*

Let’s break this down:

1. I am trying to find out where all the sexy black men hang out.

Looking on Craigslist for the super-secret hang out of the sexy black men is the first mistake. At best, you’ll find a moderately decent black man, and they sure as hell won’t divulge where the sexy black man clubhouse is. (Hint: it ain’t in Scottsdale, where this person lives.) Second, thinking that there is some forest meadow where sexy black men frolic is the most ignorant thing I’ve read in some time — and that includes the racist Louisiana judge with “piles” of black friends. I honestly hope she finds this mystical fairytale of a black man bordello, and is kicked out on her face.

2. I am looking for a black man that embraces his roots and is not trying to act white.

I am punching a pillow as I write this. It hurts. SO MUCH.

Watch out, Beyonce! White-acting brotha be wantin' the white meat!

I am curious about what constitutes these “roots” that are so desperately in need of embracing. Considering that the person asking thinks there is an invisible fortress where black men are bringing sexy back, I would guess that these “roots” include the common images of black men that they probably internalize: being straight-up gangsta and acting hard, using slang as the main form of communication, dressing in such ways that a crazy-ass white person wouldn’t dress, and having a comical hatred for the white man.

Even my ex-girlfriend (a Hungarian woman) made an unfortunate “joke” about me acting white despite being black. Her comment hurt more than nearly any other, as I gave her my love and trust, and got an ignorant comment in return.

And then there are those that have called me that delightful n-word simply based on the color of my skin. Those were the worst experiences of all.

So these “roots” are those that can never be escaped. As for black men that “act white?” That is an unfortunate viewpoint of a person so shallow, ignorant and with little insight, it magnifies the problems that we ALL face as a culture — not just the black community, which has a deep-seated problem with putting down people of their own heritage due to low self-esteem brought on by self-hatred from themselves, their families, friends, the black community and negative stereotypes. And that is just the tip of the iceberg.

You want a black man who won’t “act white.” How about you stop acting like a bigot?

3. A man that can get down at the club and rub up on me or just chill and watch a game.

Is that all black men are good for — grinding on your dumb ass at the club or enjoying sports? Well, DAMN MASSA! Break out the leash, because I wants to please you at the club, MISS! I loves me some basketball, miss! I don’t have the insight to enjoy other activities that require mental or physical exertion besides putting that orange ball through the hoop! Oh LAWD!

Seriously, get out more.

Oh LAWD!

4. I like a man that knows what he wants and goes after it.

Does this include a sexy black man that knows that he wants a 40-ounce and steals it? Because based on this shit I’ve been reading so far, I wouldn’t be surprised.

I would LOVE to see the responses this Craigslist ad gets, especially if it’s one of these imaginary sexy black men that congregate in secret, waiting to be found by dim-witted women from Scottsdale that hate those white-acting Negroids.

This stuff is why race will continue to be an issue in dating — let alone American society — for a long time to come. While it’s good to weed out the racist idiots for what they are, the prevalence for such attitudes — and the brazen confidence to display it openly — shows that we are far from the racial progress some people believe we have achieved because a black man is president of the United States.
