IGS demonstratie

Het IGS (Incident met Gevaarlijke Stoffen) team gaf een zeer interessante demonstratie waarbij een ongeluk met vaten werd gesimuleerd. Vanwege de gevaarlijke inhoud van die vaten was de inzet van de IGS container en de manschappen die opgeleid zijn tot gaspakdrager noodzakelijk. De container werd gezamenlijk aangekocht door de brandweerzone ‘Vlaamse Ardennen’.
Deze container bevat 12 gaspakken, chemicaliënpakken, ademluchttoestellen, afdichtingsmaterieel, decontaminatiemateriaal enz. Met het materiaal ter plaatse uitgeladen, is  er ruimte in de container beschikbaar voor een commandocentrum met een digitaal weerstation.

Deel van het weerstation, windrichting en snelheid zijn zeer belangrijk.

De gesimuleerde situatie met lekkende vaten zag er zeer realistisch uit.

Het eerste voertuig dat ter plaatse komt is de commandowagen met de officier van dienst.

Gevolgd door de Industriële autopomp en een haakarmvoertuig met de IGS container.

Deze slang markeert de gevaarlijk zone, in een echte situatie zijn de afstanden groter dan in deze demo. Ook wordt er dan rekening gehouden met de windrichting.

In de autopomp bevinden zich chemicaliënpakken die in combinatie met de ademluchttoestellen een eerste verkenning toelaten in afwachting van de komst van het IGS team.

Ondertussen wordt de IGS container ter plaatse gebracht

Terwijl het IGS team zich klaar maakt wordt een eerste verkenning gedaan.

Vanwege brandgevaar wordt een slang vooraf gepositioneerd in de gevarenzone.

Een putdeksel wordt afgesloten om te voorkomen dat de gevaarlijke vloeistof er in kan wegstromen.

Terwijl de rode gaspakken worden aangetrokken brengen manschappen met de gele chemicaliënpakken de decontaminatie opstelling in gereedheid.

Twee brandweermannen in gaspakken begeven zich in de gevaarlijke zone met een overmaats vat.

De lekkende vaten worden hermetisch opgesloten in een overmaats vat.

Ondertussen is de eerste groep van de autopomp met de decontaminatie bezig.

De mensen met de gele chemicaliënpakken assisteren door materiaal naar en van de grens van de gevarenzone te brengen.

Een tweede groep gaspakdragers is gedurende de interventie in standby om in te grijpen wanneer de eerste groep eventueel in problemen zou komen.

De gaspakdragers hebben de werkzaamheden voltooid en ondergaan decontaminatie.

In dit geval was de inzet van het tweede gaspakken team niet nodig.

Bij het aan- of uittrekken van deze pakken is hulp vereist van een tweede persoon.

Another arcade trade show has come along and this time we have pictures (unlike with AMOA ‘09, which I still haven’t seen anything from that one). Panic Museum by Taito. This had been formerly called Haunted Museum, it looks like it has gone through a couple of changes however.

Hopping Road by Taito. Interesting pogo stick game that we have discussed before, too bad it looks like Taito isn’t bringing this to the US

Hummer Standard by Sega. I’m not 100% sure when this is going to be released, it was also shown at AMOA recently.

Big Buck Hunter Pro: Open Season by Play Mechanix/Raw Thrills’. First revealed at AMOA, this is the first picture I have seen of a cabinet in such a setting.

Big Hammer. I am not sure who makes this although it looks a lot like Hammer 2 by Andamiro. These hammer games are pretty nice to see actually as they are something different and are accessible for all ages to play.

Robot Football. This is very similar to the MaruBot Football League game we saw some months ago, I think that it is quite exciting to see more developments in this field for coin-op gaming.

Speed Rider by IGS. I didn’t expect to see this in Europe but it apparently is quickly becoming IGS’ showcase title.As you can see from the second pic below, the game uses a card save system, which isn’t anything new to IGS games.

DJ Max Technika by PM Studios.

The Game Gate VU. This is supposed to be available everywhere now but I have not heard much about it since ASI. At least it’s an easy and legal way to get games like FIFA into arcades.

Textminator by LAI Games. This is still one I want to check out, even though I am not a texting buff by any means. I simply appreciate the unique concept.

Challenger. This is one for the kids, I like the cabinet design. I wonder if everyone is going to start going with these kinds of marquees now.

While Taiwanese company IGS is mostly known for their work with 2D games, they are slowly exploring the 3D realm with titles like their upcoming racer, Speed Rider. Some information on SR was seen at JAMMA and now IGS has launched a website for the game and it was even seen on location test recently. According to the website, it appears that the game will have a configuration where you sit on a motorcycle controller but at both JAMMA and the recent location test the game was shown off in a modified Taito Vewlix cabinet that featured a motorcycle steering mechanism but not a seat.

An der IGS Aurich West gibt es etwas neues: Wohlfühltoiletten.

Diese Toiletten werden überwacht, es gibt körperhohe Spiegel, Deo, Haarspray und weicheres Toilettenpapier. Klingt nach einer super Idee, oder?

Der einzige Haken an der Sache: die Toilette kostet 10 Cent pro Benutzung und an dennen scheiden sich die Geister.

Dabei sollte jeder, der schonmal eine Schultoilette gesehn hat davon begeistert sein. Schultoiletten gibt es nämlich in diversen Varianten:

• ohne Toilettenpapier
• ohne Tür
• dreckig
• stinkend
• beschmierte Wände
• ohne Seife
• ohne Handtücher
• ohne Spiegel
• und nicht abschließbar.

Mir fällt kein einziges positives Adjektiv ein.

Ich würde 10 Cent zahlen für den Luxus und Ich verstehe die Argumente der Gegner nicht, dass dies zu einer 2 Klassengesellschaft führt. Es ist nunmal so, dass all die Ekeltoiletten, die man heute an deutschen Schulen findet, mal durchaus benutzbare WC´s waren und zerstört worden sind. Ich denke, dass die 10 Cent, die eigentlich jeder haben sollte, einige Chaoten fern hält.

Die intergierte Gesamtschule des Landkreises Gifhorn wird in Sassenburg entstehen.

Die Entscheidung wurde vom Kreistag am 29.04. 2009 entgültig getroffen.

Ob der Protest der über 1000 Schüler und Eltern der Dietrich-Bonhoeffer- und Fritz-Reuter-Realschule in Gifhorn letztendlich zu der Entscheidung beigetragen hat wird wohl ein Geheimniss bleiben……

Aber die Schüler der beiden Schulen können nun endlich aufhören, um die Existens ihrer Schulen zu bangen.

Sie fühlen sich bestärkt und ermutigt, auch weiterhin für ihre Belange einzutreten.

Der Entscheidung für Sassenburg ging eine lebhafte Debatte voraus, in der 14 Redner nochmal ihre sachlichen und fachlichen Argumente für beide Standorte darlegten.

Um menschliche Aspekte und die gifhorner Schüler ging es dabei anscheinend nicht …??

In the previous post about Kai Tak (“Kai Tak thrilling approach”) I explained how particular and somehow dangerous an approach to RWY 13 in Hong Kong Kai Tak International Airport could be. Today, I was notified about a cockpit video showing an approach to the former HK airport with a flare in crosswind conditions that bring the aircraft in a dangerous attitude before touch down (the pilot screams “Piano” at 03:45, more or leass with the Italian meaning for “gently”) at 10 feet that causes a bank angle warning message (3:47). Interestingly, the video does not show the famous IGS approach plus visual approach to RWY 13 but an easier approach to RWY31……

Once the third busiest airport of the world, the Kai Tak International Airport was the international airport of Hong Kong from 1925 until Jul. 6, 1998 when it was replaced by the Chek Lap Kok. The airport was the homebase of the famous Hong Kong carrier Cathay Pacific and was served by many wide bodies belonging to regional, freight and large airlines whose plane landed on runway 13/31 overflying Kowloon skyscrapers and buildings and avoiding the surrounding mountains. Kai Tak was and still is one of the airports most loved by aircraft spotters because of the breathtaking approaches that had to be followed by the arriving aircraft that had to land on the only runway. The world famous approach to RWY 13 brought the aircraft in a descending path above Western Kowloon and the extremely densely populated building around the harbour. The airplanes flew the first part of the approach with the help of an Instrument Guidance System (IGS), a modified ILS. Then, upon reaching the middle marker of the IGS, the approach was no longer instrumental and the pilot with the visual reference provided by the small hill sporting the famous checkerboard in red and white, had to begin a right visual turn (“Hong Kong turn”) to establish. The turn began at a height of about 200 meters and ended at around 45 meters, even if as pictures show, some 747s or MD11s, began and ended the procedure at lower altitudes. Some aircraft did not have the time to line up and almost hit the runway still performing the 47° bank turn, especially when crosswinds required crabbing and decrabbing of the aircraft before touch down. As the prevailing wind direction in Hong Kong was more or less in the N-S direction, this thrilling approach was used most of time at Kai Tak.

(For the record, the humble blog you’re reading now is scheduled to reach that threshold about the time they finish building the Starship Enterprise. The third one. Anyway…)

It’s called The Other McCain. I don’t yet know the first name of this McCain person, or whether it’s a man or woman. Or who gave him/her permission to do this blog thing.

I just know it looks like a good blog.

Anyway, this morning’s post ( SIGTARP Strikes: IG Barofsky Report Says Treasury Not Tracking Bailout Cash), reacts to a report from The Hill about a top government watchdog blasting the administration for “rejecting ‘common sense’ by not requiring banks receiving billions of dollars in government money to say how they are using the money.”

Here’s what The Other McCain has to say about it:

This SIGTARP report is a perfect example of why the Obama adminstration hates IGs. The Democrats just want to shovel money out the door and don’t care who gets it, except to be sure their well-connected friends get their share.

According to the liberal neo-Keynesian economic gospel, as long as the federal government does X-billion dollars of deficit spending, that will produce X-plus-Y amount of stimulus value (where Y = Magic Government Spending Multiplier Effect) without regard to whether the money ends up feeding orphans or supplying the mistresses of Goldman Sachs executives with bustiers and garter belts

Unfortunately for liberals, the stupid taxpayers can never seem to comprehend the nuances of neo-Keynesian theory the way Nobel Prize-winning genius Paul Krugman does.

No matter how many times they’re lectured about this “stimulus”/bailout brilliance, the idiots who pay the taxes get a little miffed to discover that their great-grandchildren’s future has been hocked to pay for new wallpaper and wainscoting in the executive lavatory of a giant banking conglomerate which — as every expert in Washington explained last fall — was so frantically in need of cash that the branch managers were sending tellers to sell plasma to the blood bank, merely to prevent a complete catastrophic meltdown in the global finance system.

Those stupid taxpayers are like that. They have a habit of remembering irrelevant minor details like those 90-point headlines on the front pages of all the newspapers:

CRISIS LOOMS: WORLD ECONOMY TEETERS ON BRINK OF FINAL APOCALYPSE; CONGRESS DESPERATELY FIGHTS TO AVERT ECONOMIC DOOMSDAY; PLAGUES OF LOCUSTS, FROGS FEAREDDamned idiot taxpayers. What do they know about economics and budgets and stuff that only people with Ivy League Ph.Ds can ever hope to understand?

Wow. I certainly agree with that…

The makers of coin-op games like Oriental Legend 2, Pirate Revenge, Speed Driver 2 and Battle Stations is teaming up with Sega to develop arcade machiens specifically for the Chinese market. All of those aforementioned titles were made primairly for that particular market, with a few of their games making it to other territories with English translations (as is the case with Speed Driver 2 and Battle Stations), but this is an interesting development as Sega gets a foot into the Chinese market and IGS gets to use better hardware than what they typically use. According to the announcement, IGS will “design a Chinese-language Sega machine with localized features”. Shipments begin in the 3rd quarter of this year, so we’ll keep our eyes open for more developments on this front.

EBLIDAn vuosikokous oli tänä vuonna Wienissä (ensi vuonna muuten Helsingissä!) Seminaarin yhteydessä oli seminaari A Library Policy fo Europe.

Puhujista vaikutuksen teki Paul Sturges, joka puhui tuttua asiaa, mutta mahtavalla paatoksella ja suoraan sydämestä. Hän muistutti meitä siitä, että yleisin tiedonhaun ja oppimisen tapa on suullinen, eli kysytään kaverilta, opettajalta, äidiltä tai tädiltä. Jos ei tietoa kysymällä löydy, niin sitten menee monimutkaisemmaksi. Kirjasto on perinteisesti tukenut sitä tiedonhaun monimutkaisempaa osaa: yksinäistä etsimistä ja lukemista.

It seems like London is a getting a lot of arcade love recently with different companies testing out games there. The latest game to show up is IGS’s Speed Driver 2, a 3D racing game that reminds me of Sega’s Initial D. I do like the cabinet design as it’s sleek and flashy – if you have had a chance to play it, comment on what you thought about it below. I know that the 3D stuff is still somewhat new for IGS as they have primarily focused on creating 2D games (including Oriental Legend 2, which I have played and it’s excellent).

Canolis, pupcakes, and snickerpoodles surrounded me. All my friends were there, looking at me, ready to play at my command. Billowy clouds dotted the sky and Sinatra’s voice wafted through the air. I was in a blissful state.
“Hey wake up,” a voice shot out of nowhere. “You’re going to miss your big day.”
Lemme sleep. I was about to bite into a canoli.
“C’mon sleepy head, let’s get moving,” the voice said again. It was Abby and she was nudging me with her snout. I peaked through my eyelids and saw she was looking for a sign that I heard her.
“I just want to sleep,” I said while wiping the drool off my chin. “Can’t I catch some zzzzz’s for a change?”
“But it’s your big day,” Abby beamed. “You’re all grown up! It’s your birthday, it’s your birthday, it’s your birthday!”

I groaned while yawning and stretched my legs. Is it true, am I really two? Does that like, make me a teenager? I think it does. I yawned, licked my chops and looked over and saw Gregio in the corner, listening to his iPod. When he saw me, he did that thing with his ears, making them dart in all different directions, like an antennae. All IGs reading this know what I’m talking about. It made me laugh.
“For your birthday, we were going to go to the cafe, for a latte, okay?,” Abby giggled. “That’s for starters.”
“Yeah, dude, like we’ve really got to jam out today,” Gregio said in that cool, casual way that he does. “It’s a big deal-e-o, for sure.”
I was still sleepy but struggled to my feet.
“I feel different,” I said. “Yeah, before I would go ga-ga over a new toy. If it was a fluffy one, I could shred it in seconds with my Ginsu teeth.”
“But now,” I continued. “It’s as if being with friends, my owners or a nice cozy lap would suffice. It’s as if I’m not as materialistic as before.”
Abby was giving herself a bath and Gregio was lost in his music, listening to the beats and rhythms.
“Did you say something?,” Abby asked, pausing as she shifted her weight to get a better cleaning angle.
“Yeah,” I replied. “I wonder if I’m old enough to grow a mustache now!”

Sale Offering

Way back during IAAPA last year, one surprise we got was that Smart Industries had picked up a submarine combat game from an Asian developer that they called Battle Stations. from the reports we got at the show, it sounded like those who played the game walked away impressed but unfortunately we did not see much else about the game after that – there were a couple of cabinet pictures and no videos. For a time, Smart put the game up on their website, only to remove it not long after that. It wasn’t at ASI and I asked them about it and they told me that we would hear more “in a few weeks”. It’s been much longer than that with no word from Smart and I have e-mailed a couple of people there about it and have never got a response about what they are doing with the game. As such, I do not know if Smart is still going to bring the game to light in the US but if they aren’t willing to then I hope that someone else does as I have finally found some more information on it and it looks pretty neat.

As it turns out, the game was created by IGS, who has created a number of arcade games that include games like Oriental Legend 2, which I have at my arcade. In Asia the game has a different name however, which is why I overlooked it until now when I found some time to do some digging. The game is called Ocean Force there and fortunately they have a small website dedicated to the game where we get a look at how the game plays and on top of that, I have discovered a video of the game in action on Youtube that I will be posting in a few minutes that has to do with another arcade event, stay tuned!
