Voyager, c’est se laisser envahir par diverses émotions surgies devant un paysage, un sourire, un incident quelconque. En ce qui me concerne, mes émotions les plus intenses ont toujours été reliées à l’eau, plus particulièrement aux chutes d’eau.

J’aime tout particulièrement admirer la surface calme et lisse du lac ou de la rivière  avant que n’arrive la crevasse qui précipite ces tonnes d’eau avec rage et force à des hauteurs parfois vertigineuses.

C’est plus fort que moi, j’y vois toujours une relation avec la vie. On va son petit bonhomme de chemin, dans notre bonheur calme et tranquille quand arrive le drame qui nous fait plonger tête première dans un tourbillon dont on s’imagine ne jamais pouvoir sortir. Puis, on se retrouve hébétée, perdue, angoissée, ballottée, à bout de souffle cherchant à reprendre pied après cette chute dans le vide qui a tout emporté.

C’est en contemplant les chutes que j’ai fait ce parallèle avec la vie. Cette image s’étant imposée en moi, elle ne m’a plus jamais quitté et, curieusement m’a donné foi en l’avenir, en la certitude qu’on finit toujours par s’en sortir.

La chute Montmorency

Parmi les chutes qui m’ont marquée, il y a bien entendu, la Chûte Montmorency située à quelques minutes de la ville de Québec, face à l’Île d’Orléans. Au fait saviez-vous qu’avec ces 83 mètres de hauteur, elle avait 30 mètres de plus que les chutes du Niagar ?. C’est certainement l’un des plus beaux sites de la province et ce, en toute saison.

Je les ai admirées pour la première fois cet été. Alors que je m’attendais à un spectacle kitch à souhait, j’ai été totalement séduite par cet ensemble de chutes d’eau qui se sont formées, il y a 14 000 ans lors du retrait des glaciers, sur la rivière Niagara, à la frontière des USA et du Canada.

La chute américaine tombe de 59 mètres sur 260 mètres   de largeur et la chute canadienne (Fer à cheval) mesure 54 mètres de haut et est large de 670 mètres.

Elles ont beau avoir 30 mètres de moins que la Chute Montmorency, elles sont toutefois les plus puissantes d’Amérique du Nord, et l’on dit d’elles qu’elles sont l’une des plus grandes merveilles naturelles du monde. Voici le petit vidéo que j’ai tourné lors de mon passage:

Les chutes d’Iguazù

Pour contempler cette merveille  inscrite au Patrimoine mondial de l’Unesco, il m’a fallu me rendre à la frontière du Brésil et de l’Argentine. Mais ça en valait la peine. Ce qu’elles sont belles, puissantes et impressionnantes  ces spectaculaires chutes (un ensemble de 275 cascades qui s’étendent sur 2,5 km de largeur) situées au milieu de la forêt tropicale.

Sa plus haute cascade a une hauteur de 90 mètres  (plus haut que la chute Montmorency) et s’appelle  la Gorge du Diable.  Pendant de longues minutes, je suis restée là, sans voix, à écouter ce grondement sourd tout en me disant que, décidément, on est bien petit devant les forces de la nature.

Après une bonne nuit de fiesta dans la capitale nous partons de la estación de ómnibus, à 13h30, pour 18h de bus vers les chutes de Iguazu. Nous sommes arrivés à 10h du matin à Puerto de Iguazu, et nous avons déjà  parcouru près de 3000 km…  Nous nous arrêtons pour deux nuits dans un petit hôtel familial trouvé sur place.

Le  même jour, nous ne perdons pas de temps et, à 12h, direction les chutes d’Iguazu coté argentin, que nous visitons durant toute l’après-midi. Le site parait fascinant…  Nous traversons la jungle pour arriver dans un premier temps à la “Garganta del Diablo” (Gorge du Diable), puis nous revenons sur le sentier pédestre. Celui-ci nous même en haut des chutes puis en bas des chutes, et au fur et à mesure que nous avançons, le paysage devient de plus en plus impressionnant…

Off topic: Vor kurzem bin ich von einer zweiwöchigen Argentinien-Reise zurückgekommen. Unter Anderem standen die Wasserfälle von Iguazú an der Grenze zu Brasilien auf dem Plan. Wassersport war dort auf jeden Fall nicht zu empfehlen, auf Grund starken Regenfalls in den vorangegangenen Tagen waren die Wassermassen im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes berauschend! Das Gefühl, auf dieses Naturwunder zu blicken, kann ich mit Worten nicht beschreiben. Wer nach Südamerika reist, sollte einen Besuch in dem Nationalpark einplanen – es lohnt sich.

Someone just asked me what does one do at night in Puerto Iguazu? Like most places that is situated close to the jungle, there isn’t a ton of things to do? Pffffffttt yeah right!! I was amazed at the fact that on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday night there were bars that were open to 5 or 6am. It really makes Toronto look damn shameful, well in fact most North American cities are pretty shameful in this respect, with all our liquor laws and zoning regulations. Of course, one can argue that with the insurance rates, drunk driving, alcohol abuse etc blah blah, that we should have all these laws to keep us safe. Of course, the whole safety thing is just an illusion anyway, closing bars at 2am doesn’t stop drunk driving, it encourages binge drinking .. take a look at the UK for examples on binge drinking. I digress, this is a travel post, not a political waste of time.

The first thing about hanging out in Puerto Iguazu at night, is to never stay at the Sheraton! It is a great hotel, and wonderful if you want to see the falls and have all the conveniences of a modern hotel in the jungle. That being said, the food is decent but nothing comparable to the quality of the food that you will have in the town. The Sheraton’s cuisine is catered for the baseline affluent white tourist – of course absolutely nothing is wrong with this. One pays for consistency across the world and the Sheraton delivers consistently! That being said, the prices of food are stupendous in comparison for food in town. Bife de Chorizo is Bife de Chorizo regardless of whether it is at the Sheraton or at La Mujerda or Color Parilla Pizza, and paying 40USD for a steak vs 9 USD for a steak of similar quality is a bit of a rip off, especially in Argentina.

However, if you want to eat fantastic meals at night, with music and good wine for ridiculously cut rate prices, then I would recommend that one stay in Puerto Iguazu. There are a number of great hostels and medium range hotels in town itself. If I did this trip again, and I didn’t have the hotel points from work, then I would surely stay in town.

Places to eat .. well I can only recommend Color Parilla Pizza and La Mujerda, which are decent places by any standard. The food quality and service at these places is definitely high end.

The train station is also a place to grab food in evening, the pastas are all cheap ($5 CDN) for a plate of Spaghetti Bolognese sin Manteca and a soda. So a great deal there, or one could go to any nearby empanada place and grab a fist full of empanadas @ 2 pesos each (.60 cents CDN) … for me, 7 plus a soda was a bellyful, regular people should be fine with 3

After eating at one of the local joints, you can have two options for nightlife… you can go drinking in the local bars which are all open till dawn or hit the casinos

Have you ever been somewhere that is so breathtaking that it’s hard to come up with good descriptive words to convey what you experienced there? Iguazu Falls is one of those places.

Of course, it’s easy to tell you what it is. It’s a series of really wide waterfalls in the middle of the jungle. In fact, ‘Iguazu’ is derived from two Guarani words that mean ‘big’ and ‘water.’

The falls are taller than Niagara and, according to everyone who has been to both places, far more impressive.

The day we went to the falls, it was overcast and raining. At first, I was bummed out because I assumed sunshine would make for a much better view and experience. I’m pretty sure I was wrong.

Because of the rain, the falls were spilling water at 8 or 9 times their usual level. Mist, defying gravity, rose from the base of the falls like smoke. The vistas were just stunning. It’s really hard to capture in pictures what it’s like to actually be there, knowing you’re looking at one of the most magnificent natural places on Earth.

I did a lot of standing at the edge of the walkway, mouth agape, just looking and listening to the sounds of the water. (It’s quite loud, as you can tell in the video I posted previously).

After exploring all of the areas we were able to (some parts were closed due to such high water levels), we took a gran aventura (great adventure). First we rode a 4X4 through the forest (not really that cool) and heard about some animals of the jungle. At the end of that trip, we got into boats and got to ride as close as safely possible to the waterfalls. Epic.

This is absolutely a place to put on your list of things to see before you die. It’s just amazing. My meager explanation does not do it justice.

Ipanema

If you are a first time traveller to Brazil, it might be simply impossible to choose which of the many interesting places you should visit. In case you have enough time and not so tight budget, you could consider in combining the top four of the most popular Brazilian sights. Just like any other large country, there are certain must see destinations in Brazil as well. In the US the Big Apple, Grand Canyon and the Hollywood Hills are something to be seen at least once in your lifetime. First time visitors to India usually start with the Golden Tringle and a visit to Australia has to include at least Sydney, Ayers Rock and the Big Coral Reef.

Iguassu Falls

Which are the top destinations of Brazil then? I would say that first of all you should visit the Marvellous City of Rio de Janeiro. Why? Simply, because it’s breahtakingly beautiful and has one of the most easygoing city life in the world. When I first came to Rio my expectations were extremely high, even so the city exceeded them and on daily basis keeps on reminding me why it’s called one of the most beautiful cities of the world. Secondly, the natural phenomenon of Iguassu Falls attracts tourists world widely. You will probably not spend more than just few days at Iguassu, but seeing this landmark is something not to be missed. After having seen Rio de Janeiro and the Iguacu Falls, you have seen two of the most famous landmarks of Brazil and it’s time to see the other faces of Brazil. Huge part of this country is covered by rainforest, so it’s something to be experienced. Even if the state of Amazonas is the most wellknown when it comes to rainforest adventures, the Amazons basis covers 9 Brazilian states. Last but not least, we cannot forget the northeastern coast with endless beaches. What wouldn’t be better place to start exploring this region than the state of Bahia. The capital of Bahia, Salvador, has one of the major airports of the northeastern coast, offers an interesting cultural program and is just a short step away from some of the most beautiful beaches of the country. It’s an excellent gateaway for the northeastern region.

These four destinations are spread out all over the country, so how do you combine them? Do to the distances you need at least two weeks to be able to visit these four diverse destinations of Brazil. Taking into account the fact that the airport of Guarulhos in São Paulo is the most important entrance point for the international flights, upon your arrival you could first head to Iguassu and then after connect to Rio de Janeiro. When leaving Rio your next destination would be Manaus, a gateway for adventures at the Amazon area. Last but not least you would take a flight from Manaus to Salvador, and discover the roots of Brazilian culture before heading to one of the irresistible beaches of the Bahian state. If you wish to have an active part at the end of your tour, you can always spend few days hiking at the Chapada Diamantina as well. Once your holiday is over you can fly back home via São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro if there is no direct connection from Salvador to your country.

Salvador Bahia

Why would I recommend this kind of itinerary then? Simply because it allows you to see the top four destinations without spending too much time and money on travelling. This is because these destinations can be combined using the most economic airpass (offerred by both TAM or Gol) of four flight segments. You can connect directly from São Paulo to Iguassu, again to Rio de Janeiro, continue to Manaus and include Salvador as a last stop of your itinery (these two routes will include landing but no change of aircraft). If you purchased the flights separately, you would end up paying a lot  more than a price of an airpass. In my opinion, this is route gives you a very wide perspective on tourism in Brazil allowing you to combine the three diversities. After having discovered the Brazilian culture, explored the wildlife and felt the beaches, in your future visits you can just simply choose the part you preferred and keep on enjoying everything related to this diversity!

After seeing countless lists of places to visit before you die/before you reach 30/if you can log off the net and actually get out there, I thought I’d add my tuppence-worth with some slightly different places I want to visit.

AFRICA:

1. Church of St. George – Lalibela – Ethiopia

A normal-sized church hewn from solid rock, rock from the ground. This is a statement of devotion I just have to see. Built in the early thirteenth century it’s still a major pilgrimage destination. Amazing.

2. Namib desert – Namibia

A tustle rages on between this and the Atacama for the title of world’s oldest desert but this one seems to pip it. It’s achingly beautiful with petrified sand dunes and red dust – this one is well worth a visit to the Wiki page just to see the image below full size.

3. Great Zimbabwe – Zimbabwe

This site lent it’s name to the country of Zimbabwe so it’s been somewhat hijacked politically but that ’s because it puts to rest the insulting and downright racist view that a lot of people have about African architecture. The conical tower is the pinnacle of construction here and a marvel in masonry. Constructed from round 1100AD the site is one of the oldest in Southern Africa and evidence has been uncovered of a trade netweork stretching as far as Arabia and China.

4. Nile Cruise from Cairo to Aswan – Egypt

One that really should be on everyone’s list. The Pyramids, Karnak (which I’ve wanted to see ever since The Spy Who Loved Me), Abu Simbel, some of the most important historical sites in the world, all linked by the one famous river. A cruise down stream would be a great way to see them all and I will try to get here in the next year or so.

5. The Dogon People – Mali

I’d never even heard of Dogon villages until I was forced to mortar and machine gun them in Farcry 2. The digital version was so striking I looked into it and discovered what they were based on. This culture has a lot of specific, sexual and gender-based architecture. Fertility cults and the division between men and women is encapsulated in these strange structures, the granaries in particular. It seems more than a travesty to blow these up doesn’t it:

6. The East African Rift Valley – Kenya

Apparently the birthplace of Homo Sapiens, anyone want to find out where you came from? Yes please! Really this is something of a journey of imagination because the region must look almost nothing like it did all those millennia ago when we moved onto two legs and started turning tools to our advantage, beginning the rapid road to where we are now. To see the area is an ambition of mine that shouldn’t be too difficult with so much of the Valley accessible from Kenya.

EUROPE:

1. Portofino – Italy

Part of the rugged Cinque Terre (‘five lands’ referring to five picturesque villages) section of the Italian Riveria, Portofino is a destination very well frequented by cruise ships for good reason – it’s a small and extremely beautiful cove filled with houses painted in every pastel shade. Probably not great for much more than a day trip but well worth seeing from the sea, from where you can take it all in in one go. I first heard about this place from someone I used to work with, he holidayed along that part of the Italian coast and showed me his snaps. From then on I’ve longed to visit.

2. Delphi – Greece

Referring particularly to the archaeological site rather than the modern city I wanted to visit here when I was in Athens but there just wasn’t time. With an ancient amphitheatre perched on the side of a mountain what’s not to love? I’ll get here on a future trip to the country.

The home of some of Michelangelo’s greatest works and the world’s first art gallery, the Uffizi, Firenze absolutely has to be on any art lover’s list of places to visit!

5. The State Hermitage – St. Petersburg – Russia

Another of the world’s greatest art repositories and palaces, and another building which is a work of art in itself! The Hermitage was founded by Catherine The Great and has grown from its inception to include several buildings used by the Tsars until the Revolution of 1917 when it was requisitioned into a state property and national treasure.

6. The Alhambra – Granada – Spain

Ok, this one’s an annoyance. It’s obviously so amazing that when I tried to go there in 2003 I couldn’t get a ticket because it was sold out, even in the local banks which is apparently where it’s best to get on-the-day tickets. I was on a small trip around Andalusia and tried to visit, to no avail. Book in advance!

Even from the outside this fourteenth century palace and fortress of the Moorish rulers of the Emirate of Granada is an astonishing place. Famous for its gardens and elaborate architectural details this has drawn masses of visitors since it fell to the Reconquista in 1492. From the hillside opposite it’s just beautiful and in part can claim to be one of the reasons I love islamic and moorish buildings, the majority of the sites I want to visit it seems.

7. Cordoba – Spain

The whole of the old centre of the city seems astonishingly pretty too though so I reckon there are at least a few days visit in this choice.

8. Segovia – Spain

Another stunning Spanish choice with Roman and Castillian architecture. The aqueduct is justly renowned because it’s bloody massive and the topography of the area makes the cathedral seem even more massive than it already is.

9. Carcassonne – France

The fortified town of Carcassonne is, to me, the epitome of what a medieval walled city should look like. Dominating the area like a French Camelot it’s enormous pointy-turreted walls tick every box in picture-perfect fairy tale world.

10. Auschwitz-Birkenau – Poland

Yes, like Hiroshima but far more harrowing. This really is something to make you think about what you are and what you’re capable of because I’m sure that every person on this planet is capable of deeds like this, given the right conditions. If we get to know what can happen then perhaps there is a way to avert crimes like this. Events like the Holocaust have not ended with the fall of the Nazi regime so there’s every chance or, realistically, near certainty that scenes like this will come again.

11. Westminster Abbey – London – UK

Right, I’ve lived in London my whole life and still haven’t been inside this historic site. It’s where all our monarchs are coronated and the stone is saturated with history. Founded 400 years before the Normans invaded the British Isles it finally got its stone form during the 1040s in the reign of the last Saxon king – Edward The Confessor. I’m sure it’s brilliant, must have a look!

12. La Tomatina – Bunol – Spain

This is one of those things you read about all over the internet. In honour of St. Louis Bertrand but with unknown origins this food fight looks like great fun so I must go along one year and join in chucking tomatoes absolutely everywhere. Bunol, where it’s held, looks quite nice too but is almost an afterthought on this one I’m afraid.

13. Oktoberfest – Munich – Germany

Mmmmmmmm, beer. This beerfest started in 1810 to honour a royal marriage and since then has grown to the epic proportions seen today. Oktoberfest is ‘the biggest party in the world’ though rather commercialised and rising in cost, but what the heck, it’s only for a day or two. Unless I don’t like my liver any more and fancy killing it off by going for the whole sixteen days? No, no thanks, even all the pretty German girls in traditional dirndl dress couldn’t convince me on that one…

14. Extremadura – Spain

Yes, yet more Spain! On the aforementioned trip to Andalusia we took a bus from Granada to Lisbon. We crested a hill and the scene that opened up before me was breathtaking. Ever since then I’ve wanted to re-visit the plains of Extremadura. We only skirted the southern rim but at that time of year it was an endless, glorious patchwork of purples, reds, browns, greens, oranges and yellows. I’ll need to learn how to drive for this one methinks. Minus the myriad colours this is very much how I remember my first view of the birth region of the conquistadores:

15. Ostia Antica – Italy

Ostia is 30km southwest of Rome and operated as the Imperial capital’s port from around 300BC. The ruins are vast and severely under-visited so if you want respite from the throngs of Rome itself then come here to wander in peace (apparently). It’s the quality of the remains that gets Ostia onto this list. You can visit the public latrines, shop fronts, warehouses, and baths – all of which are remarkably well preserved. You get a real taste of what living in a Roman city was like. I reckon this would be a better visit than Pompei because of its crowds and the relative difficulty of getting there. Coming from Rome Ostia is a short rail journey, but an epoch away from somtimes overwhelming Roma. Or so I’ve read…

MIDDLE EAST:

1. Palmyra – Syria

This is a massive and extremely important archaeological site partly dating from well before the Greek Empire. I’m not sure when this first came to my attention but I know I’ve wanted to visit for a long time.

2. Istanbul – Turkey

Istanbul is rapidly becoming a must-see city for people avoiding the cost of the Euro in tough economic times. Now the largest city in Turkey, but not its capital (that task belongs to Ankara), Istanbul developed from a Greek colony called Byzantium to become Constantinople and the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire under Constantine. Later Constantinople fell to the Ottoman Empire in 1453 and became the Imperial capital for 450 years. The influence of this place cannot be underestimated yet to many people it’s an unknown and mysterious place mythologised in films like Midnight Express which certainly coloured my youthful impression of it! This is a city I reckon I’d better get to quite quickly or risk seeing it fully Europeanised when it does inevitably enter the EU in the near future. Trust me, this will happen, and we’ll all be richer and happier for it once the inevitable racial backlash calms.

3. Krak des Chevaliers – Syria

With many ingenious design solutions to the question of how to repel invaders except for I believe, providing a well, this is a case-study in how to build a castle properly. It may not be the prettiest but it was damned effective during the Crusades!

4. Cappadocia – Turkey

I first saw this mysterious word being used as a restaurant name in Norbury, South London. For ages I meant to look up what it meant, when I did I was blown away. What an alien landscape, and fascinating culture this region possesses. One that apparently is best seen in winter and by hot air balloon… Churches and undergound cities carved into the rocks and phallic stone ‘fairy chimneys’ dominate the sights to see here.

5. Petra – Jordan

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. That’s what I always think of when I see Petra. It was used as the resting place of the Holy Grail in that film and I can see why as an otherworldly city carved from rock. Just look at it! It’s not just this one building either, this is the most iconic of them though. The Nabataeans were a ‘lost’ civilisation until a Swiss explorer reported it widely to Europeans. Of course it had been known of since Pliny the Elder wrote about it but us Europeans like to forget things every now and then.

6. The Great Mosque of Samarra – Iraq

I built this. Many times. In Civilisation 4. That game and Dan Cruikshank’s ‘Around The World In 80 Treasures’ inspired me to visit a lot of places on this list. The Spiral Minaret, AKA the Great Mosque of Samarra was once the largest mosque in the world. Sadly, it being in Iraq I imagine this will be a site I don’t see for many years. If at all. Sadly indeed.

7. Naqsh-e Jahan Square – Isfahan – Iran

Constructed in Shah Abbas’ reign the Sheikh Lotf Allah mosque on this square is a stunning example of Islamic art. Something I’ve already established that I love. The Square is immense and a good setting for this building. Thank you Dan Cruikshank for this one too.

AMERICAS:

1. Great Blue Hole – Belize

This is one for that long-held desire to learn to SCUBA. The Great Blue Hole is the opening on the roof of a huge underwater cave. Just imagine the wonders in there…

Luckily with Bush gone from the White House and Palin resigning from the governorship there may be some sanity on that front.

One of the big sites of Pre-Columbian America but majorly and unfairly overlooked. It was the centre of an empire pre-dating the Aztec’s and its influence stretched all the way to Guatemala. These ‘ruins’ are some of the most spectacular in Mexico, as the picture below demonstrates.

Probably on every list I’ve seen so it’s no surprise it’s on mine too… A four day trek culminating in a dawn view over the ruins sounds like a little earthly slice of heaven. Apart from the fact it’s often shared with a thronging crowd of tourists. I first got word of this incredible place when I was about 4 years old. The Mysterious Cities Of Gold cartoon was an inspiration that I’ve never lost. Who says cartoons, films and computer games do nothing for the youth of today eh? (do I still count as youth at 26? Bloody hope so but I doubt it…)

7. Nazca Lines – Peru

How on earth were these surveyed? Nobody has a satisfactory answer but however it was done these are a work of artistic genius dating from anywhere from 200BC to 700AD. Beautiful geometric and animal shapes scraped into the desert floor. Gotta get up in an aeroplane or, perhaps absurdly as the makers did, in a balloon to see these.

8. Yellowstone National Park – USA

This jewel of a national park consists of a supervolcano caldera and could explode at any moment, I should get over there as soon as possible before that happens because when it does it’ll destroy the whole park and cripple most of North America. It’s swelling already and some think it’s only a matter of time before an explosion occurs powerful enough to change the way we all live our lives forever.

Angkor is one of those places most people have heard of but aren’t quite sure where it is. They know it from films like Tomb Raider but everything I’ve heard is that it’s better than anyone’s imagination. When you can find a corner to yourself it’s supposed to be magical. Construction at Angkor started in the early twelth century and partially abandoned in the sixteenth it retains its place as one of the most impressive Hindu/Buddhist temple complexes I know of.

3. Himeji Castle – Japan

An ingeniously designed castle with so many ways to harrass and kill invading soldiers that it was never attacked! This was a prototype for many of the other castles in Japan.

The Western take on death is wholly different to the Hindu one, as epitomised at Varanasi’s pyres on the Ganges. To see this kind of thing for real would make a lot of people re-think their outlook on life and recognise its transience. The full on nature of this city makes it somewhere I really have to visit on my own pilgrimage of sorts.

One of the most extravagant Hindu festivals which celebrates all deities at the same time, including characters from other faiths like Mary and the Christian saints. The city bursts into colour as the oversized models of these gods and idols are paraded to the Ganges and then dunked in. The effort and excitement surrounding this festival make it something I want to be part of, if only as a voyeur.

La Paz es caótica pero amigable, sobre todo por su gente, siempre tranquila y educada. La ciudad se encuentra en el fondo de una inmensa hondonada intentando así arañar un poco de oxigeno al altiplano boliviano, aun así esta a 3600 metros de altitud y esto se deja notar al subir sus empinadas calles. Toda la falda de esa gran hondonada esta repleta de grandes barriadas muy humildes que como en todas las grandes ciudades latinoamericanas se asoman al centro económico donde corre la plata. Estuve tres días en La paz: uno para escribir, otro para pasearla y el tercero para visitar los restos de la ciudad de Tiwanaku (1500 ac-1200 dc), la que fuera el centro de una importante cultura considerada por su antigüedad la madre de las civilizaciones americanas.

Y tras La Paz me fui a Sucre, la capital histórica de Bolivia. Sucre esta llena de arquitectura colonial blanca y descafeinada, y mi llegada coincidió con las marchas en honor a la virgen que son en el fondo un carnaval encubierto. En Sucre estuve casi de paso, no me hizo tilín, allí me aloje en una cómoda habitación con duchita caliente y TV con cable, y ej que durante este nuevo ciclo del viaje he decidido mimarme un poquito más tanto en alojamientos como en transportes, así que de aquí hasta el final levantare un poco el pie de acelerador de las pelas, que me lo he ganado después de tanta austeridad monacal-mochilera.

Después de Sucre marche a Potosí, ciudad a más de 4000 metros de altitud y al pie del “Cerro Rico”, lugar mítico en el imaginario colectivo español, la gran mina de plata de la América colonial, y es que ya se sabe, ¡vale un Potosí!. Galeano en “Las venas abiertas de América Latina” cuenta que Potosí fue la “vena yugular del Virreinato, manantial de la plata de América, Potosí contaba con 120000 habitantes según el censo de 1573… La misma población que Londres y más habitantes que Sevilla, Madrid, Roma o Paris… A comienzos del siglo XVII, ya la ciudad contaba con treinta y seis iglesias espléndidamente ornamentadas, otras tantas casas de juego y catorce escuelas de baile. Los salones, los teatros y los tablados para las fiestas lucían riquísimos tapices, cortinajes, blasones y obras de orfebrería; de los balcones de las casas colgaban damascos coloridos y lamas de oro y plata. Las sedas y los tejidos venían de Granada, Flandes y Calabria; los sombreros de París y Londres; los diamantes de Ceylán; las piedras preciosas de la India; las perlas de Panamá; las medias de Nápoles; los cristales de Venecia; las alfombras de Persia; los perfumes de Arabia y la porcelana de China. Las damas brillaban de pedrería, diamantes y rubíes y perlas, y los caballeros ostentaban finísimos paños bordados de Holanda. A la lidia de toros seguían los juegos de sortija y nunca faltaban los duelos al estilo medieval, lances del amor y del orgullo, con cascos de hierro empedrados de esmeraldas y de vistosos plumajes, sillas y estribos de filigranas de oro, espadas de Toledo y potros chilenos enjaezados a todo lujo”.

Potosí alimento de plata el mercantilismo europeo, el germen del capitalismo actual, hasta que el siglo XVIII marco el final de “la economía de la plata que tuvo su centro en Potosí; sin embargo, en la época de la independencia, todavía la población del territorio que hoy comprende Bolivia era superior a la que habitaba lo que hoy es la Argentina. Siglo y medio después, la población boliviana es casi seis veces menor que la población argentina… Potosí tiene ahora tres veces menos habitantes que hace cuatro siglos”.

“Aquella sociedad potosina, enferma de ostentación y despilfarro sólo dejo a Bolivia la vaga memoria de sus esplendores, las ruinas de sus iglesias y palacios, y ocho millones de cadáveres de indios”.

“En nuestros días, Potosí es una pobre ciudad de la pobre Bolivia: “La ciudad que más ha dado al mundo y la que menos tiene”… Esta ciudad condenada a la nostalgia, atormentada por la miseria y el frío, es todavía una herida abierta del sistema colonial en América: una acusación. El mundo tendría que empezar por pedirle disculpas”.

Para el viajero observador, y buen husmeador, Potosí aun guarda muchos tesoros en sus calles y fachadas, se advierte el fantasma de ese pasado glorioso y pujante. Calles llenas de historia bajo la mirada del Cerro Rico destripado y agujereado. A mi me gusto mucho Potosí por si misma y por lo que fue, es todo un museo viviente de la historia latinoamericana que merece ser visitado. A parte, en Potosí viví una de las experiencias más especiales de todo mi viaje, fue la visita que realice a las entrañas del Cerro Rico, a las míticas minas de plata de Potosí.

La visita a Cerro Rico la realice con una agencia y guiado por Oscar, minero de Cerro Rico, era el único turista aquel día así que la visite solo junto a Oscar. Para la visita me proporcionaron ropa, calzado y un casco de minero, con su luz y todo, y me hicieron firmar un papel en el que se quitaban de toda responsabilidad en caso de accidente, hay que decir que la visita a las minas de Potosí entraña bastante riesgo debido a que visitas minas que aun siguen en explotación por lo que puede haber accidentes por derrumbes o explosiones, y la verdad es que cierto, y bastante acojonante si lo piensas dos veces y estas dentro de la mina.

El día de la visita fue un domingo, así que no había nadie trabajando en la mina, cosa que quita vistosidad pero ganas en seguridad, la mina que visitamos fue La Candelaria. La visita comenzó en el mercado que se encuentra en pleno barrio minero y que por ser domingo estaba lleno de mineros tomando, la mayoría borrachísimos, Oscar me advirtió que debía desayunar fuerte para la visita y me enseño una típica tienda donde los mineros compran sus cosas para el trabajo, incluido los explosivos, de hecho Oscar me ofreció que si quería podía comprar algunos cartuchos de explosivos que podríamos hacer explotar, yo decline educadamente la invitación, también me mostró el alcohol que toman los mineros diariamente, alcohol puro, también me ofreció y también decline, él se reía, lo que si hice fue comprarme una bolsa de hojas de coca, quería probarlas y aprender a mascarlas, los mineros consumen gran cantidad de hojas de coca al cabo del día, es un estimulante que les ayuda en el trabajo, como nuestro café, mascarlas les ayuda a sobrellevar el duro esfuerzo y les quita el hambre, solo realizan un desayuno fuerte previo al trabajo y hasta el final de la jornada no vuelven a comer, además acentúa el efecto del alcohol que toman, la triste realidad es que la gran mayoría de mineros trabajan narcotizados completamente, y enciman cuando libran le siguen dando al tema, el alcoholismo es la  triste consecuencia fruto de las durisimas condiciones laborales que soportan estos trabajadores, este drama también se traslada a sus familias, el maltrato esta a la orden del día, así como el trabajo infantil, hay muchos niños  de 14 o 15 años arañando la poca plata que queda en las entrañas del Cerro Rico. La explotación de la mina se hace a través de una coperativa de la que participan todos los mineros, pero por lo que me han contado de coperativa solo tiene el nombre.

La visita duro unas cuantas horas, descendimos por estrechos túneles a distintos niveles de la mina, yo al final perdí la noción de si subíamos o bajábamos, y os tengo que reconocer que pase un poco de miedo, no es una experiencia recomendable para claustrofóbicos. Oscar me iba comentando todo lo relacionado con el trabajo en la mina y enseñándome las zonas de explotación así como los distintos minerales que nos encontrábamos, entre ellos amianto, altamente cancerigeno, y también había gran cantidad de aguas acidas por todos lados. Encontramos algunas vetas de plata y Oscar me regalo un par de pedacitos de ella. El ambiente era sofocante a ratos y frío a otros, te costaba mucho respirar, y habia mucho polvo, yo además por mi altura tenia que caminar todo el tiempo encogido, los túneles son estrechos y muy bajos, así que acabe agotado por la falta de oxigeno y por la sobrecarga muscular de caminar varias horas encogido. Pensad además que si a 4000 metros de altura el oxigeno falta imaginaros si además te metes en una mina. Las condiciones de seguridad son lamentables en la mina, hay gruesos cables de alta tensión colgando por todos los lados mientras el suelo esta encharcado en muchos tramos, además hay todo un caos de precarios travesaños de madera para sostener los túneles, de hecho hay muchos accidentes y muertos en la mina, yo le pregunte a Oscar y este me dijo que hasta la fecha había habido 40 muerto ese año, -¡40!- exclame yo, -sí, no son muchos, somos 5000 mineros en Potosí- me respondió riéndose un poco de mi reacción.

Algo curioso que me contó Oscar es que según las creencias de los mineros en la mina no entran ni dios, ni la virgen ni los santos. No están allá ni rigen dentro, no tienen poder en la mina, esto rompería con la omnipresencia y omnipotencia del supuesto creador. Para los mineros en la mina solo están la Pachamama (diosa prehispánica de la tierra) y el Tío de la Montaña (una encarnación del diablo). La Pachamama te protege y el Tío de la Montaña te da el mineral, si él quiere, o te quita la vida, si él quiere. Y según dicen, el acto de extraer mineral de la montaña es la fornicación metafórica entre la Pachamama y el Tío de la Montaña. Tienen un montón de distintos rituales dedicados a estas deidades, entre ellas sacrificar una llama con cuya sangre embadurnan la entrada a las minas y tirar el primer trago de alcohol puro a la tierra, como ofrenda a la Pachamama.

Y después de la inolvidable experiencia en las entrañas de Potosí me marche en una cafetera con ruedas, y por caminos de tierra entre parajes lunares, hasta la pequeña ciudad de Uyuni, ciudad que se encuentra en un rinconcito de Bolivia y en mitad de ninguna parte. Nada más llegar a Uyuni me fui rapido a ver su famoso cementerio de trenes, una vía de tren que acaba en mitad del desierto y en el que abandonaron un sinfín de locomotoras y vagones de otras épocas, es un lugar muy evocador. Yo fui a verlo al atardecer, andando y solo, y a la vuelta lo pase mal, se me hizo medio de noche, el cementerio esta en las afueras, así que volví en la penumbra y rodeado de bastantes perros callejeros que rondan por los arrabales, yo tengo miedo a los perros así que fue un momento bastante tenso para mi, decidí caminar dirección a la ciudad y mirar al suelo todo el tiempo, y no pensar en nada más, llegue atacao, pero no me atacaron por más que me ladraban…

Desde Uyuni cogí un tour de tres días hasta San Pedro de Atacama (Chile). Con un todo terreno recorrimos el Salar de Uyuni, el salar más grande del mundo, y también las lagunas altiplánicas bolivianas que hay entre el salar y San Pedro de Atacama. Y fue alucinante, de lo mejor del viaje, el Salar espectacular, cosa esperable, pero yo sobre todo alucine con los paisajes de mil colores de las lagunas altiplanicas, un paisaje desértico de volcanes, géisers, flamencos rosados y lagunas de colores a más de 4000 metros de altura, mágico, de otro mundo, solo faltaban los dinosaurios paseando. En el tour éramos siete más Octavio, nuestro guía-conductor-cocinero-y lo que hiciera falta, un tío muy majete aunque sordo como una tapia, le preguntabas cualquier cosa gritando y te respondía otra – ¡Octavio! ¡¿Esa montaña es un volcán?!- y él te respondia -¡faltan 10 minutos!- y todos nos descojonábamos, también tenia algo de maestro zen, siempre hablaba con pocas palabras y conciso, una vez nos dijo – Esa montaña se llama ???, y esa otra ???- entonces se giro y nos miro solemne, y levantando el dedo índice afirmo rotundo -Porque cada montaña tiene su nombre- mágico silencio y todos flipando. Además la convivencia con mis compañeros de viaje fue muy buena, fueron tres días estupendos. De lo mejor del viaje.

Mis compañeros de tour, de izquierda a derecha: Felipe (Brasil), Cata (Chile), Andrey (Francia), Rocio (Chile) y las Anas (Polonia), agachado esta Octavio (Maestro Zen Boliviano).

La carretera que une la frontera boliviana con San Pedro de Atacama, en Chile, es algo más que una carretera, es el paso a otro mundo, a otra América, una América más rica y confortable, y para mí, en cierto modo, ha sido como el paso a Europa, Argentina y Chile son muy europeas y uno se siente como en casa. San Pedro de Atacama fue un lugar tonificante donde descanse durante un par de días, allí compartí habitación en el Hostel con “mis adolescentes chilenas favoritas”, con Rocío y Cata, ¡vaya pareja!, como había fiestas se iban de “carrete” y volvían a las tantas de la madrugadas “piripis” (vamos a decir eufemísticamente), así que me despertaban y me daban la murga. Me he reído mucho con ellas sobre todo cuando se reían de mi, son muy majas, ya hemos quedado para vernos en Santiago y que me lleven de cervezas.  Desde San Pedro también visite en tour el bonito Valle de la Luna, desde donde contemple un espectacular atardecer de tonos rojos y violetas sobre el desierto.

Y de San Pedro de Atacama me pase a Argentina, patria del Ché, Borges, Cortazar y Maradona, habitantes insignes de mi imaginario personal, es un país que tenia muchas ganas de conocer, y en el cual ahora me encuentro. Así que salte en bus desde un lado a otro de los Andes dejando atrás “la espina dorsal sudamericana” que habia seguido desde Venezuela, el autobús atravesó una zona preciosa de cerros de colores y llegue hasta Salta, y desde allí me descolgué por el norte de Argentina hasta Asunción, capital de Paraguay, este viaje lo hice con Jesús, un puertorriqueño que conocí en Salta y que trabaja en Paraguay, es el primer Jesús negro que he conocido, venia de marcarse un viaje por tierra desde Caracas en solo tres semanas! . Y también durante este trayecto en autobús ví algo excepcional, algo de lo que había leído mucho pero que nunca había contemplado, ví “el rayo verde”, un fenomeno lumínico que ocurre raramente al atardecer y que tuve la suerte de ver desde la ventanilla de mi autobús.

Los Jesuses.

Asunción no tiene mucho que ver ni hacer, a parte de sorber un “terere” en un parque del centro y darle un paseo para satisfacer la curiosidad de conocerla. Solo estuve dos noches en Paraguay, fue solo una tapita del país, una noche en Asunción y la otra en Encarnación, a la cual llegue atravesando los llanos paisajes paraguayos llenos de grandes fincas ganaderas. La verdad es que me esperaba un país muy pobre, en las macrocifras Paraguay es el país más pobre de Sudamérica, aun así a mi no me pareció más pobre que Perú o Bolivia, e incluso la sensación que ví en sus calles y pueblos fue más positiva que en esos países. A veces confundimos el PIB con el bienestar, y no es lo mismo, véase India. En Encarnación visite por la mañana las ruinas de las misiones jesuíticas de Trinidad y Jesús, en esta visita conocí a José, un bombero de La Coruña muy viajado que esta recorriendo Bolivia y Paraguay, con el me tome unas birras con muy buena conversación antes de volver a Encarnación, y entre que si esta la pago yo y esta la pagas tu y tal y cual, y la falta de costumbre, pues yo me puse pedete, así que pase la frontera argentina digamos borracho, menos mal que aun no les ha dado por poner control de alcoholemia en las fronteras, si no no paso.

Desde el lado Argentino, Posadas, tome un autobús hasta Puerto Iguazú, ciudad desde donde se visitan las famosas Cataratas de Iguazú, las cataratas más grandes del planeta y uno de esos lugares que siempre quise conocer. Un lugar espectacular, una pasada, es el sitio que conozco donde más se siente la fuerza y el poder la naturaleza, te hace sentir pequeñito pequeñito, -demasiado poderoso- decía una chica para si mientras las contemplaba. Además el entorno es precioso, las cataratas están en mitad de la selva, lo que le da más exhuberancia al gran espectáculo hipnótico de agua que son las Cataratas de Iguazú.

Y de Iguazú a Buenos Aires tras veinte horas de carretera y paisajes pampeños llenos de fincas ganaderas, da gusto ver a las vacas tan sanotas y libres, no me extraña que luego estén tan ricas. Y aquí estoy, justo un año después de haber iniciado este enorme viaje, parece ayer cuando aquel 28 de septiembre del 2008  salía muy de mañana de casa de mis padres en Coslada con la idea de hacer un viaje sine die y hacia oriente, casi naa, aunque ahora le podríamos llamar de diferentes maneras, el viaje evolucionó de sine die a una vuelta al mundo, a una ruta transamericana, a tres meses en la India, a un Camino de Santiago planetario con sorpresa italiana, a un año viajando…

Yo siempre me había preguntado ¿que se siente después de viajar un año de manera ininterrumpida? y ya puedo responder a esa pregunta o al menos ya tengo mi respuesta. Mi estado actual se podría definir con tres palabras: contento, satisfecho y cansado. Contento por todo lo vivido y sentido; satisfecho al contemplar lo transitado y por haber hecho lo que tenia que hacer, por estar en el rumbo; y cansado porque nada es gratis y todo tiene su ciclo, y el ciclo de Mi GranViaje se está cerrando, mi cuerpo y mi mente me piden otras cosas, otros alimentos, y ya miran a la siguiente flecha amarilla, igual que antes del viaje miraban hacia oriente y sine die…

Desde el principio sonaba profundamente seductor lo de plantear varios partidos de fútbol en distintas ubicaciones del planeta para capturar el atardecer. Escoger el deporte rey como medio para difundir la nueva tecnología Exmor R de Sony parecía, sin duda, un acierto. Como así fue. Pero ha llegado más allá de un mero evento promocional. El Sony Twilight Football ha quedado grabado en miles de fotos en los distintos lugares, pero también ha reforzado la visión sobre la marca de todos los que en él hemos participado de una u otra forma.

Era arriesgado, de resultado incierto, pero claramente innovador promover unos nuevos sensores a través de un acontecimiento que se ha expandido en internet a través de prensa, fotógrafos, bloggers y usuarios habituales o puntuales de cámaras Sony que han podido experimentar de primera mano las bondades de cámaras como la DSC-TX1 o la DSC-WX1. La conclusión en cuanto a la efectividad la tendrá que analizar el equipo organizador de Sony Europa, pero la valoración personal que puedo extraer es bastante satisfactoria. Una forma de aproximarse al usuario, que es para el que va dirigido el producto, y recibir feedback de primera mano.

El viaje a Iguazú ha sido una aventura. Cataratas como escenario, fútbol como lenguaje y motivación, y la fotografía como protagonista, hicieron que este viaje y este lugar queden en nuestra memoria durante un largo tiempo. Fueron unos días intensos, con una programación destinada más a hacer disfrutar a los que participamos que a promocionar un producto con charlas aburridas y presentaciones autopromocionales. Lo cual, que no es poco, se agradece y mucho. Pero más allá de la tecnología, todos quedamos impregnados del entorno, de la naturaleza en estado salvaje y de un grupo de personas que supimos convivir, confraternizar e incluso sembrar raíces de amistades.

Y mucho tiene en ello que ver el gran acierto en la elección del equipo que representó a Sony España. El club Amanecer de Sierra de Fuentes (Cáceres) le puso ilusión, alegría, risas, cantos, brindó momentos inolvidables para recordar y para fotografiar, así que creo que todos quedaron encantados. Llegaron al corazón de la gente a base de humildad, de sencillez, de cercanía y de un agradecimiento profundo por poder vivir semejante experiencia, que dificílmente olvidarán todos ellos. El resultado del partido no acompañó, pero era lo menos importante. Y no es por comparar negativamente, pero no fue así con el equipo francés, que se tomó el partido mucho más en serio de lo que merecía y en eso fueron muy “franceses”, lo que les hizo lograr la victoria, pero no la empatía de los participantes.

Aún con algo de resaca del viaje, con ese jet-lag del regreso tras muchas horas de vuelo, vía Brasil, queda la sensación de que Sony se ha volcado de lleno en lograr que la experiencia de todos los que allí estuvimos fuera sobresaliente. Algo de improvisación (un acierto encontrar un terreno de juego alternativo en pocas horas), mucho esfuerzo, dedicación y esa sensación de que todo estuviera perfecto para que pudiéramos sacar el máximo partido a nuestras cámaras es algo que se agradece.

Lástima que las conexiones a internet del hotel, por todo lo demás excelente, no estuvieran a la altura y dificultaron la retransmisión mucho más en vivo y de forma más prolífica de todo lo acontecido, pero al menos el intento quedó y todas las fotos realizadas asó lo constatan.

Las cataratas fueron un espectáculo fantástico, el partido de fútbol tuvo emoción (y mucho barro) y las fotografías fueron una gozada cuando se tiene semejante paisaje (natural y humano). Espero que Sony haya conseguido salir satisfecha de ello tanto como el que esto suscribe.

Jornada larga e intensa que apenas nos ha dejado tiempo para descargar las fotos tomadas. Por la mañana, una de las más impactantes visitas que se pueden hacer aquí en Iguazú: la Garganta del Diablo. Un lugar increíble y espectacular que ha dejado boquiabiertos a todos. El sonido de miles de metros cúbicos de agua cayendo a gran altura, la fuerza del río, el aire envuelto en una neblina de agua,… realmente impactante y que ha sido capturado por todos con sus cámaras Alpha, sus Cyber-shot y las Handycams.

Tras un largo viaje y con muchas vicisitudes para los integrantes del equipo de fútbol que representa a Sony España en el Twilight Football, por fin todos estamos en
Iguazú, aclimatándonos al tiempo, al lugar y a lo que nos espera. Desde luego, que ha merecido la pena llegar hasta aquí porque el entorno es único y uno consigue relajarse de inmediato entre la vegetación, la tranquilidad y el sonido del río Iguazú al fondo.

Al equipo de Sony España, unos extremeños con mucho salero, se le ve cansado pero ansioso porque llegue el momento de demostrar para lo que han venido. Mucho les ha costado, con cambios de última hora en los vuelos, pero ilusionados con conseguir ganar el partido.

La organización se está esforzando porque todos estemos cómodos y mañana conoceremos a pie todo el entorno que rodea a las famosas cataratas del Iguazú. Mientras, la cámara no para de disparar, porque el paisaje lo requiere. Las Sony Alpha han aterrizado y ya están disparando sin parar.

Las cataratas del Iguazú se encuentran cerca de la triple frontera Paraguay, Brasil, Argentina.

Están formadas por 275 saltos de hasta 80 m de altura, alimentados por el caudal del río Iguazú.
