One of my favorite past-times is to look at pictures and films of farming times past. Especially if it includes those old Orange Tractors. So, here are a few shots I found at the Library of Congress that I liked and you might too. These are from the late 1930′s and early 1940′s…. as you look at them you can see what a different world it was then…

-

This is from Utah around 1939-40 and I find it interesting that the Rockies are in the background. This is of course a styled Allis WC and I love the plow behind it. This is the same plow I will be pulling behind my WC.

Here is a kid learning to drive a Allis B around 1940. Notice the country road and the car going the other way. I remember learning to drive on a 1948 Farmall Cub when I was around 8 years old. What a fun photo, notice the look on his face!

This is in 1939 Texas with a farmer putting a front tire back on a unstyled Allis WC. What makes me smile is that in 2011 I sat in my garage with my WC up on a block of wood like this one pulling off a tire and then putting it back on the same way! The more things change the more they stay the same I guess….

Here is a Allis Chalmers dealer in Oklaholma in 1940. Look at all those B’s… I studied several pictures from this dealer and there are over 30 Allis B’s in their lot! What really caught my eye is in the back ground….. look at the houses and then the cars! As I look at my B I realize it was on a farm when people still drove old cars from the 1920′s and horses were probably still being used to do jobs while the tractor was out in the fields and sometimes the horses joined the tractor. What a different world these old tractors came from…

Here is another shot of that Allis Dealer in Oklahoma City….. Count the tractors… look in the back ground at the cars.. interesting…

With Snowflakes falling today I made sure all the fluid levels were full, the plow bolts all tight and all drain plugs tightened and the tires full of air and the front end greased. It is a game of waiting now. I like starting up Old Allis and just driving her around sometimes, bu with the plow on her it doesn’t happen as much for there isn’t many places you can go with the plow attached. Oh, I’ve taken it out and across the fields, but its harder to move around and to go places I normally like to go. So, now its the wait till it snows time before she runs for any length of time. In the meantime I bring home a gallon of gas here, a gallon of gas there and mix the lead substitute in to help things run smoother. But, I can’t think of a better insurance policy against snow than being ready! Soon I will have new pictures of her with the plow….

This past weekend I went to all day farm auction and found a set of tire chains for my WC! Old Moll

This past weekend I went to all day farm auction and found a set of tire chains for my WC! Old Molly will have uses for those chains for plowing snow and for pulling the other addition I made to our tractor arsenal this weekend, a IHC Little Genius #8 Trip Plow. I do not have any pictures of the plow but she is in darn good shape and just in need of one tire which I already have found!

While I had preferred a single bottom plow for I am plowing up a little over a acre, I found that single bottoms are in demand and in my area are selling for about 2 times the amount of a double bottom. Well, a double bottom plows twice as fast and I have the WC so why not? I spent some time doing some research for after the spring plowing I will be tearing down the plow and working on it and repainting it. I found a picture on the net of what she should look like and this will be my next project after the WC is done.

So, why a IHC plow on a Allis? Well, first it will work and secondly I got it dirt (pun intended!) cheap! LOL…. so if you are driving down the road and see a big old orange tractor pulling a red, white, blue and black plow behind it…. it is me! Stop and say hello!

Here is a site with some restored plows…. go here to see what my plow will hopefully look like;

http://www.knuckleheadquarters.net/little-genius.html

The WC and B ready to go to work! My father is a big Farmall guy and I had to laugh telling him my Allis’ will now be pulling Farmall behind them….. *grin*. Now, if your a Farmall fan do not take offense for I grew up learning to drive and operate tractors on a 1948 Farmall Cub and 140. Memories that are dear to my heart!
