Decided to have a crack at shooting film, black and white specifically. I picked this up on ebay for about £15, loaded it up with Ilford HP5+ and will take it out for a test run once I get some batteries for it. It had a ton on dust on the focussing screen, but I managed to clean it up. Reckon there will be some duds coming out of this until I get the hang of it…

i borrowed my father’s film scanner and can now show bigger images than in the last post. than

i borrowed my father’s film scanner and can now show bigger images than in the last post. thanks dad. if i didn’t screw up, everything should be chronological.

quite a while ago i met with maria to chat and have fun. after a while we also started to drink, a lot.

this does look out of place, considering the previous introduction, but iirc maria asked me to not show her picture (in good resolution). so in place of maria here’s these two: stuffed dog and rubbery-hair bird-like thingie.

after about what must’ve been 4 hours of talk and drinks and about 1 hour of walking around we stumbled into this hidden ballroom. we were greeted in the most friendly way, given drinks and joined the discussion about almost every topic imaginable. i asked the other participants how they got there and they all said: ‘we just stumbled in here’

it was very dark there. this is 1/4th at f/1.8 and 400+2 (i think). does anyone know what the asian characters on the ‘flag’ mean?

then some other weekend i met with some other friends.

we set out to meet at kreso’s place, but i arrived too early and decided to walk around instead of busting in early. one of the things that caught my eye during the walk.

nadiene on the phone with her mother. we didn’t understand a single thing since she was talking norwegian. oh and yes, we did drink out of those glasses

at the ‘alcazar’. she took the book from the wall behind her. it was was some cheesy love-story.

marie on the right. see, lots of cocktails.

cute. <3

kreso and i are in this shot too. took this while smoking at the bar. we left about an hour later and were lucky to ‘just’ catch the nightline.

now for some random frames.

here i am preparing some photos and other things for the portfolio i used to apply at the academy of fine arts, while watching a movie and drinking coffee.

cooking some soup. i later burned my finger with steam while lifting the lid.

these two were watching the street for at least 3 hours.

i am a vampire! like the filth running down the lettering.

sometimes they show operas on a screen outside the opera and people gather to watch. i think it’s a nice idea.

this is my staircase. they were replacing some electric wiring. it was loud, dusty and took forever. oh and let’s not forget the constant fear of power outages. luckily this is over now.

the academy declined my application, so i was waiting to get my portfolio back.

still waiting. oh, and: triangular sweat!

the one on the right constantly turned her head like that.

attic at parents’ place. love the ‘window’ in the wall window imagery.

gabi needed like forever to pick something from the menu. in the end it was some sort of spicy dish with rice. i had a bowl of noodle-soup (could’ve used some more coriander)

this is were we go when we get hungry at work. good viennese cuisine.

the cranes plus the slight fog looked impressive in person.

more than a month ago students everywhere started to occupy auditoriums at their universities. these frames are from the first week (or so) and focusing around the university of vienna.

in front of the university. surprisingly they were talking about random stuff that had nothing to do with the students. also: foggy.

the audimax feels incredibly ‘warm’ and ‘human’ now.

protest march (28.10.) starts moving. i like all the movement and blurryness here.

protesters from a different university joining the march.

behind me is the parliament. i tried to go up the ramp to get an overview shot, but the police told me that i need a ‘press-pass’ to go up. duh.

cute sign and thanks for turning around.

way too dark here. 1sec. at f/1.8 and iso 400 braced against the fence. luckily this was the last frame, so i shot the next film at +2.

education in a coffin.

hidden ballroom we meet again. took this while walking, so the framing, focus and stuff are way off.

he was just standing there, hugging the tree and not moving at all.

the march stopped for a while. decided to walk to the front and well, yeah, take a photo.

when everyone arrived at the university again everything remotely climbable was instantly climbed.

shot into the projector-light. i think it caused interesting fading and a neat flare.

went home shortly thereafter.

Wednesday, 11 November Dear all, Valentines Mansion is a Grade II listed building built circa 1699 w

Wednesday, 11 November

Dear all,

Valentines Mansion is a Grade II listed building built circa 1699 with one of its owners being a Director of the East India Company. I am one of the Trustees of the Valentines Mansion Trust (VMT) and have organised an event to celebrate the Sikh links with British Royalty and the contribution made to British life by the Sikhs since arriving in the UK.

The VMT holds these events to raise funds to benefit the Mansion by purchasing artefacts related to its history. Valentines Mansion Trust is presenting a major event at Valentines Mansion entitled “A Celebration of Anglo-Sikh History” at 7.30 pm on Thursday 26th November.

One of the main speakers is Dr Harbinder Singh, the founding Director of the Maharajah Duleep Singh Centenary Trust – Britain’s First Sikh Heritage based organisation. He has led all the Trust’s major projects over the past 15 years. These include the Sikh Heritage Trail, Commissioning the Memorial Statue, to Maharajah Duleep Singh which represents the first piece of Sikh public art outside India. In 2006, he acommpanied the Prince of Wales on his tour of Punjab and acts as an adviser to the Prince of Wales in the India programme.

The other main speaker will be Mr Peter Bance, an author with several books to his credit on Sikh History who has an extensive collection of illustrations and photographs, which he will bring to the event.

We need to sell 70 (seventy) tickets to make the event a success but surprisingly this has not been easy – I would like to appeal to Sikhs in particular to help us reach our target by Friday 20 November to give us some peace of mind. Could you please forward this request to others who you feel may wish to attend at your earliest convenience.

Tickets available from John and Audrey Manuel – telephone number 0208 554 9760 – price £10 each to include refreshments courtesy of the local Gurdwara.

I look forward to seeing sixty nine of you there.

Best wishes

I use to love to spend hours and hours in the darkroom. The smell of D-76 was always so captivating.

I use to love to spend hours and hours in the darkroom. The smell of D-76 was always so captivating. I would experiment with Acufine, Rodinal and Microdol X film developers. Ilford FP4 was my favorite film…I would process it in D-76 1:1 at 68 degrees for 8.5 minutes and produce really beautiful B/W negatives. I was infatuated with high contrast images so Kodalith was always in my inventory of film. Leicalady and I would spend hours teaching darkroom classes to aspiring hobbyists. I would print on everything from a Beseler 23c-II XL to an Omega D-5 with a cold light head. I remember when RC paper was first introduced by Kodak in 1974.This eliminated a lengthy phase of the already tedious process. One no longer needed an expensive paper dryer to achieve high gloss prints! My gosh times have changed…Daddy Bub is smiling and loving every minute of our shared joy of photography.

Old school...

I honestly cannot remember the last roll of film I shot. Leicalady and I will eventually have another darkroom to share our love of printing with our grandkids. (If that EVER happens) We have been digital ever since our first digital camera, the Leica Digilux I. The learning curve was challenging at first but we were diligent and finally are confident in our digital abilities. (however, we continue to learn) I have recently been enamored with HDR (High Dynamic Range) images. It provides luminances between the lightest and darkest areas of an image that standard digital imaging techniques or photographic methods cannot produce. This wider dynamic range allows HDR images to represent more accurately the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes ranging from direct sunlight to faint starlight. I have been experimenting with Photomatix Pro software the last few days and am quickly discovering an excitement that I have not felt since my days in the darkroom. The following images represent my first attempts at generating the HDR effect. It will continue to be a work in progress…

So yeah it’s been a while since I’ve posted something up, but I don’t think anyone noticed…but whatever, So yeah I’ve finally chosen what College I want to go to……and that’s Ilford County High School…It’s a really posh Grammar school, which expects the best from all its students, which basically means, they expect me to get all A’s in my AS Levels….no pressure…..xD. So yeah, for my AS Levels I’m taking Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Maths Mechanics and Critical Thinking…..yeah it’s a lot….and it’s a lot of hard work…. oh and erm I’m going to keep my promise and tell you what my GCSE grades were…. trust me….they weren’t that good…..

Chemistry: A*
Biology: B
Physics: B
Maths (Linear GCSE): A
Yeah I’m regarded as the Disgrace of the family…..so yeah I’m going to have to prove myself in A-Levels’….A’s across the board……I’m going to need that especially due to the fact that my life’s ambition is to become a Neurone-consultant or a Cardiologist…….so yeah…….that’s really about it…….don’t worry…..i’ll update this thing more often…..don’t worry…..

One of the reason I decided to go freelance was to also pursue various personal projects that I left for years… I found it very hard to actually take the time to develop old ideas and beliefs I had. In all honesty I guess it was also brain moving and I couldn’t be bothered. I recently met a few people that talked to me about various artists that could interest me or even shared various methodologies in order to help oneself developing a personal project. I guess the first step, and the catalyst in my situation was a project we did with a friend, really it was more a laugh and a brainstorm than anything else but I did enjoy the time we spent together trying to setup a series of pictures and I do feel I should be rigourous enough to do it on my own with a subject that matters to me. So this morning I spent a couple of hours researching the web, it was weird, I am picking up a subject I left 3 years ago. My approach is different, my feeling towards it have changed but nevertheless I am still very interested in identity… Anyway we will see where this will lead. I am feeling a bit down at the moment and this could be a rather good therapy for me. I am not sure you will get to see any images concerning this personal project for quite some time but until then here is a picture from the photoshoot we had last week with Antoine.

We were standing at the battlements,

casually surveying the nightwashed

lights and terrace-topped bars

of our city.

Cobbles burst

wetting tourists’ feet

clinging to the silence of the lights that

blotted out the night as the rain

bounced and ballooned.

And then we were flying

above the wet stone steps back

to the noise;

smouldering cigars, absinthe,

wishful decadent curiosity,

playing at hedonism

when the word has no meaning.

Note: Only slight additions and amendments have been made to this text. The majority of this was written July 2009, while we were on holiday in Prague.

Prague greeted us with a single word. Twenty feet high, there was no picture, no context:

SEXY

pink and white, sitting high on a billboard and welcoming us into a world where every corner of the New Town offers the promise of cheap drugs and ‘titty bars’, loud music and absinthe.

Love is unreachable for him who seeks it, and but a fleeting spark.*

This is a city of opposites. What in the day might be the most beautiful of streets falls with the sun into a centre of decadence. The busiest bridges turn into the quietest, offering the most amazing views.

This may be true of any city but Prague’s binaries are amazingly clear. At first glance, these streets could be Rome, Venice, Paris. Like these places, wandering around the Old Town’s cobbles, it can be beautifully calm. Yet you are left keenly aware that it is a calmness that will not last. It is like being an extra in an advert for Stella Artois; yes, the scene is beautiful, but that is at odds with the thing that is being represented. They are selling a lie.

Now this is not necessarily true – after all, it is the lie, the boisterous tourist side of Prague that is the construct. With the calm comes the true Prague. But when the legend becomes truth…

Crossing Charles Bridge towards New Town, night drawing in, you are immediately accosted by men with thick accents, dragging you to strip clubs while asserting that it is free to come and look but if you want to touch ‘you pay more’.

It is obvious that much of the beauty of this city has been twisted by tourism. Charles Bridge is covered in scaffolding. Art Deco buildings – formerly symbolic of the bourgeois – are nothing more than stylish advertising hoardings. The primary inhabitants of the parks are drug dealers and prostitutes. On one particular day, walking through a small park towards breakfast, a man asks, ‘do you speak English?’ Stopping, we think he needs some help. ‘Speed, skunk, E: all good, all cheap.’ It is a side of this place that is hard to avoid.

Yet despite all of this, there is beauty in abundance, though mostly when you take a step back and view the city from afar. Up close she is seedy but from a distance this can be a gorgeous place.

Similarly, though the cobbles look great when they are wet, Prague is not particularly pleasant in the rain. The Czechs all carry umbrellas. They seem to be rather smug about this.

I can see why Kafka felt suffocated by this place. Though beautiful, everything is contained. Everything worth doing is within walking distance. Any further and you feel isolated, cut off from the Prague where you feel relative comfort.

*I have written this quote in my notebook at exactly the same point as I have included it. I don’t remember where I got it from or who said it. If anyone could help me with this is would be appreciated.

Eurgh, my particular gripes today reside mostly with Royal Mail. And London.

Let’s start with RM, because I hate them more.

Ok, well, since my last post half an aeon ago, I bought a Leica R3. I’ll admit, I didnt have all the money to pay for it, and now I owe my mum around £80. Worth it though. Well, that is to say, it was worth it before it arrived. Our kind seller was stupid enough to put pathetic quantities of packaging into the box, despite it having a journey from the Netherlands, and it arrived damaged. When I say damaged, the film advance lever no longer works on the account that it is no longer attached to the camera. Second, the film rewind dial is bent, badly. So, while it probably wasnt totally Royal Mail’s fault, I’m still pissed with them because I still haven’t got my damn Kodachrome. ARGH, it’s enough to drive you mad.

Anyway, our Netherlandish friend doesnt want the camera back, so it looks like we are going to have to shell out the money to get the damn thing repaired. Dad has taken it to a repair shop we know to see if we can get a quote, but I know it’s not going to be cheap. Why does all this crap happen to me?!?!?!

Anyway, I mentioned I dislike London. That’s true. We went there yesterday, first time for awhile, must be at least 3 years since we last went. Went to the Imperial War Museum, didnt have too much time for anything else, and I came to the conclusion that I dont like our Capital City. It is seriously overhyped, it is much like any other big city in the world; lots of steel and glass mingled with some older buildings. What’s the big deal? There are way too many people everywhere, too much traffic and the air is disgusting.

/rant/

Oh, forgot to mention that I finally got round to doing some enlargements with photographic paper in the darkroom; have to say, its not the most difficult thing in the world, although the red light we used was rather old and broke, and we cooked the plastic when we put a big 60W bulb in, so we had to use a torch with the redlight bit on the end

No, it was good. Took a while to get setup and everything, did a test run on a fairly good photo of some trees, which ended in failure because it was heavily overexposed several times :S Had to stop down to about f/8 with a two second exposure to get it just right. I know also have a rather nice print of our chemistry class gathered around a cake Dont even ask, haha.

Today Tigger has a day off and as the weather seems better, we thought we might go on an outing. But first, Tigger had a ticket giving a 25% reduction on breakfast at Giraffe, so, of course, we just had to try it out!

We walked to the branch in Essex Road, passing Islington Green with its “doughnut” war memorial which has proved somewhat controversial, some people feeling that it doesn’t look like a war memorial. Personally, I don’t think it looks like anything at all.

We had a very good breakfast, enough to see us through to supper tonight. I needed to pick up a parcel at the sorting office in Almeida Street so we walked up through what is now called Gaskin Street but, according to remaining traces of its old name, must once have been called Church Street. I don’t know why the name has been changed because the church in question – St Mary’s – is still there. It was the first church in London to be bombed during WWII but was rebuilt.

The graveyard, as is often the case in old urban churches, has been landscaped as a public garden, and very pleasant it is too, especially on a sunny day like today.

After collecting my parcel (fortunately a small one, as I was going to have to carry it around with me), we caught a bus to town. Looking for our next bus, we walked through the Royal Exchange. It is now a centre for “Luxury Shopping” (not for us, then) and though we were tempted by the “Grand Café and Bar”, we didn’t tarry. Well, only long enough to take a photo or two. It’s a rather magnificent place.

We found the bus we wanted and climbed aboard. Tigger’s intention was to visit Ilford. It turned out to be rather a long journey on a crowded couple of buses and it literally had me falling asleep where I sat. We eventually arrived to my relief, and took a look around.

Ilford has a town hall, called Redbridge Town Hall. It was too long to get the whole façade in the picture without serious distortion, so here is the entrance to give you an idea of it.

It also has a public library that includes a museum. “Aha!” we said, “A museum!” Quite. But unfortunately, the museum is closed on Mondays. We were sufficiently taken by the library to enquire when it had been built but if anyone knows, they’re not saying. I have sent an enquiry by email in the hope of finding out.

How’s that for a coincidence: just as I was writing the lines above, an answering email arrived! It says “The Ilford Central Library was officially opened by the Duke of Gloucester on Tuesday, 25th February, 1986″. So now we know!

There’s not a lot more to be said about Ilford, as far as I can see, so we had a cup of coffee and started back. The return journey was as long as the journey to get there, of course, and the bus was uncomfortably crowded until we reached central London.

Back on our home turf, we went for coffee at the Tinderbox cafe which has this rather hypnotic lamp on the staircase.

You may think that was enough wandering for one day but Tigger suddenly decided she wanted to look at a particular shop. Nothing odd about that, but the shop happened to be in Archway. So thither we went by means of the 43 bus.

Archway is named after, and is famous for, the road bridge that was opened in 1900. It is a stout piece of Victorian engineering and, I think, visually pleasing. Unfortunately, the rest of Archway is not of the same quality, architecturally speaking. Its other landmark is the Archway Tower.

I understand that the council has plans to demolish this monstrosity but that the operation is being hampered by its cost. You have to wonder how anyone could, firstly, design such an eyesore and, secondly, agree to have it built. Its simple removal will improve the environment no end.

Well, that was the end of our wanderings for today, and we returned home to the welcoming aroma from our slow cooker, the first time we have used it this autumn. Its use marks the change from summer to winter as surely as do the shortening days and the clocks going back.

The Gardens of Peace in Ilford UK

Death is a fact of life. It may sound strange to say that, but it is something that every one of us should prepare for and keep in mind at all times. None of us knows how long we will live on this earth. We do not know when or how we will die. If we live a good and pious life, then death is something that we should not fear. We have complete faith and trust in Allah that He will protect us from the punishment of the grave and the greater punishment of the Hellfire.

I often wonder... Is it going to be here for me?-The Gardens of Peace

If, however, we are leading sinful lives, we will not look forward to the next life. On the contrary, we would do everything we can to enjoy this life no matter what kind of actions that might lead us to. The important thing to remember is that Allah has promised Paradise to those who follow His guidance and He has warned us about the Hellfire that He is preparing for those who refuse to follow His guidance. He commands us only to do what benefits us, and He warns us against falling into sinful behavior, those things that are harmful to us.

When the time of death comes to believers, the angels take their souls out very gently, as easily as a drop of water falls out of a glass. The believers are given signs that their time is near, and the transition to the next world is almost painless. The soul of the unbelievers, however, are snatched away in a rough manner, and no warning signs are given. It is a terrible experience for them.

The graves of believers are well-lit, spacious, and comfortable resting places where their worldly deeds come to them as a handsome companion who speaks kindly to them. An opening will be shown to them through which they can see their places in Paradise. They will ask Allah to bring the Day of Judgment quickly so that they can receive their reward.

The graves of disbelievers are dark, restrictive, and gloomy places where their deeds come to them as an ugly, abusive person who beats them and calls them names they dislike. An opening will be shown to them through which they can see their places in the Hellfire. They will beg Allah that He would not bring the Day of Judgment so that they avoid being sent there to be punished for eternity.

Allah says in the Qur’an what means:

*{Those who believe, and do deeds of righteousness, and establish regular prayers and regular charity, will have their reward with their Lord: on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.}* (Al-Baqarah 2:277)

If we do our best to obey Allah and follow His commands in this life, we will have nothing to fear in this life at the time of death or in the hereafter. We are confident in Allah’s promise of Paradise for those who work hard to earn this great reward.

We ask Allah that He guides us to what pleases Him and that we fear none but Him.

In the first chapter of the Communist Manifesto, Karl Marx outlines the source of power held by the

In the first chapter of the Communist Manifesto, Karl Marx outlines the source of power held by the bourgeoisie: the means of production. So what is a “means of production”? In the case of photography, the direction has become lately that we purchase cameras from places such as Blacks, Best Buy, Futureshop and Wall-Mart. We then take our images, and must return to a Blacks or Wall-Mart to obtain prints. Meanwhile, our camera equipment becomes obsolete, usually every year or two – forcing us to by more. Thus begins a cycle of dependence and consumption that feeds the elite and suppresses the proletariat.

So, with this darkroom project – I attempt to break that cycle by appropriating my means of photographic production. I chose the medium of film (specifically black and white process Ilford HP5) due to it being obsolete enough to be cheap, recent enough to be readily available and developed enough to produce highly detailed, artistic images.

Lets start with the camera equipment: a Canon AE-1 Program 35mm circa 1985ish. It’s in great working order, inherited from my father and as a bonus came with a 50mm f1.8, 55-250mm f3.5-4, Canon A550 Speedlight and a power film advance. In addition I will be using two medium format cameras: an Anesco Clipper (1950s) and Brownie Target Six-16 (1930s). Both acquired from thrift stores, also in excellent working order.

The darkroom is a rather large walk in closet in our condo in Windsor. After I kicked the cat’s litter box and food out of it I proceeded to make it light-tight with some weatherstripping around the door. The safe-light is a $2 purpose-built bulb I acquired from Photo Outfitters – the locally owned ma and pa camera shop. The chemistry and basics, sadly were acquired from the local Henry’s, who’s employees are about as useless with film photography as one can imagine. I purchaised (without help):

Ilford Ilfosol 3 Developer – for Film
Ilford Multigrade Developer – for Paper
Ilford Stop Bath
Ilford Rapidfix Fixer
Kodak Professional Wetting Agent
A 650ml Developing Canister – 2 rolls capable of 35mm, 120 and 125
A thermometer

This past Wednesday, my first step was to produce a proof-of-concept that I could develop the film myself. For those of you who arn’t familiar with film – this means chemically producing the image on negatives and rendering them no longer sensitive to light. It has nothing to do with the actual printing of an image.
The process involves locking yourself in a totally dark room, popping open the film canister, snipping the ends off the film and spooling it into a reel and then popping it into the light-tight canister. At this point you can turn on the lights. Next the canister is filled with developer, stop bath and then fixer in a highly precise and involved process.
My first roll, I made the rookie mistake of assuming I could have my safe light on while loading the film into the canister… boy was I wrong. After an hour of intense developing I discovered the entire roll was exposed and ruined. After correcting this mistake my second and third rolls turned out awesome.

I had done it, proved I was capable of developing my own film. The next piece of the plan was to be able to take my negatives and print them on paper. Now-a-days this is done with giant machines in the back of shoppers drug marts that only the trained employees can use. In the old days, it was done with a device similar in form to the overhead projector your grade 3 biology teacher used to write on. It’s called an “enlarger” and brand new they can run $200 to several thousand. That’s at least $150 over my budget, and to buy one from Henry’s wouldn’t exactly be sticking it to the man now would it?

My next installment in this series will deal with acquiring and using an enlarger. I’ll be adding pictures as they’re developed so stay tuned.
