Como dijimos la semana pasada, nos hemos dedicado a lo largo de ésta a escribir una serie de tutoriales sobre el uso básico de algunos de los programas que vienen de serie al comprar un Mac. Así, empezando por el tutorial de iPhoto, podréis aprender un poco por encima de qué es capaz cada uno de los programas que contiene la suite iLife ‘09.

As being posted right before the holiday; Thanksgiving, its a good time to wind down away from the stress of work and escape into your relatives’ or parent’s house. Given how much technology runs our life today (iPhone, Blackberry, iPods, computers, wireless-ness, ebay auctions -very addicting!!!-, Facebook, and oh, something called the internet!) it seems the holidays are as much about family as about retreating from today’s modernized world into a daydream of the 1960s where parents baked pumpkin pie and family members sat around and ate together while telling funny stories while not being able to pick at their phones because there were no such things as the iPhone and Blackberry back then.

But then off we go back into technology. On a side note, often times, we genii (geniuses for those who don’t know Latin) like to think ahead of our time. Introducing…the iLife

We genii never stop thinking do we. Took me some time but I put the concept together. First you add the iPhone with an xBox360…

with a desktop computer with quad core processing…

as well as a Samsung plasma flat screen and a Canon DSLR…

…and you get the iLife!

At a slim, portable 11″x30″ weighing in at just under 7lbs, you can carry your entire entertainment system anywhere you go! Be unstopable as the iLife is unstopable!

As Apple is updating iLife and iWork applications to move to 64-bit and to take full advantage of the improvements included in Snow Leopard, there is much debate as to whether they will disable support for PPC processors. Compatibility with Leopard hasn’t been decided yet, but that the 2010 suite would only support Macs with Intel-based processors.

This switch to Intel-only compatibility for the new iLife and iWork would not be a huge surprise, as Snow Leopard dropped support for PPC-based Macs. However, it would be surprising to see them disable support for Leopard.

iLife revisions were traditionally issued on a yearly basis each January at Macworld San Francisco. In recent years, releases have been every 18 months, with iLife ‘06 being released in January 2006, iLife ‘08 in August 2007 (skipping an “iLife ‘07″ release), and iLife ‘09 in January 2009.  If this cycle remains unchanged, we could expect to see the next generation iLife and iWork released in mid-2010.

Apple a liberado la actualización 8.1.1 de iPhoto’09, la cual trae las siguientes novedades:

• Soluciona los problemas que afectan al funcionamiento y la precisión de la función de reconocimiento de caras.
• Corrige una serie de problemas de menor importancia relacionados con el servicio de pedidos de libros.
• Mejora la compatibilidad con el iPod touch.

Se recomienda instalar esta actualización (de 12,5 MB) a todos los usuarios de iLife’09. Esta actualización esta disponible en el menú Actualización de Software en el menú Apple (), haz clic ahí para buscar automáticamente las actualizaciones más recientes del software de Apple.

Preparaos porque se acerca una semanita muy completa! Desde iMacos vamos a ofrecer 5 tutoriales de cómo usar esos programas extraños que venían con el Mac pero que no todos nos hemos atrevido a probar…

Para hacerlo más ameno, publicaremos cada día un tutorial. Con la posibilidad de que os lo podáis descargar en formato PDF para que lo podáis utilizar en el futuro.

Aquí van las fechas de los tutoriales, están colocados un poco como si hicierais un proyecto real, primero recopilar fotos con iPhoto, luego capturar y editar el video, crear un menú y grabarlo en un DVD y para terminar colgarlo en una Web hecha por vosotros. Y para terminar veremos también un poco de GarageBand.

I’m currently typing this on my Linux-based netbook, but my home desktop experience is now mostly a Mac affair. I’ve really enjoyed it so far, so I thought I would talk about what programs have really made me happy with the whole experience.

First off, the entire setup process was super easy. With Windows and Linux, I’m used to at least two days of interface and program installation and tweaking. I simply plugged my mini in, turned it on, did my “mac dance” ritual during the opening video, went through the initial setup, and I was done in no more than ten minutes.

It also goes without saying how cool it is that they give you gobs of software for free with iLife. Even though the programs are not anything really special, they’re very useful and fun to use. I can’t wait to play with Garageband to eventually make a podcast.

With the money I saved by buying the mini on sale, I also purchased iWork. I haven’t really played with Numbers, but Keynote and Pages are great. It take a while to get used to the interface, but once you do it’s a pretty powerful office suite. Still no comparison to Microsoft Office, but still pretty darn good. It’s also nice that Helvetica is the default font is Pages. Now every paper I write looks like a Target ad.

I’ve also added some freeware I’ve always heard about to my Mac. Some good, and some not-so-great. First, I’ve always heard folks raving about Quicksilver, a application launcher that you use via the keyboard. This was almost my first freeware download on the Mac, and I found it fairly disappointing. I just find it quicker to get to my frequently used programs via the dock. I guess I just think more visually. I’ve never been really into keyboard shortcuts.

For NaNoWriMo, which I’m currently failing miseribly at, I tried several different programs. I finally settled on WriteRoom, since it has zero distractions from my writing. All it is is a black screen with green text. You simply type. Really cool. Only thing is that it’s a 30-day demo, with the full program costing $24.95. I understand paying for software that’s as good as this, but $24.95? For a black screen with green text? Give me a break. I probably won’t be purchasing this after the demo is over.

As for music players, it’s been kind of difficult. I’ve always hated iTunes, for either Windows or Mac, because of the almost communist nature of how it wants to control every aspect of your library and music player. So, I decided on trying Songbird. Songbird was pretty good for an open source program based off of Firefox, but it’s tragically lacking in podcasting support, and it also grabbed my entire music library and renamed every last file. Turns out automatic library management is turned on by default. Awesome idea, Songbird team! Good thing I had a backup! I have now switched back to iTunes for the moment, but I hope for something better to come along soon that allows for adding my music library that resides on my Linux server without fucking it up.

Other than those programs, I’ve also installed Celtx for future screenwriting, and the obligatory Firefox install.

Overall, my experience so far has been great. I feel that once I put more memory in this guy, it’ll be even better.

i keep quite mopre than let say 1,2,3, …,8 months now. its been a while since i, myself ever visit my so called blog!! but lately im thinking i should get more serious again and get the traffic (yes, traffic was good back then) flowing through my [so called] blog. so in this very post, i upload my new OS screenshot, [believe it or not] MAC OS X Leopard. i play with it, love it, … you name it.

i download the infamous Coda and install, it works like the way it suppose to be! i know now why it received Apple Design Award 2007!

btw, my second year exam is getting near, i may not be able to update the blog again [...] i hope i come back again soon, and then BOLD as before!!

So here’s my ride October 22nd, 2009 – an hour portion of a 2.5 hour ride from Danville to Pittsburg, California – 1462 still images, broken down into a 3:38 minute segment, edited in iMovie (part of Apple’s iLife ‘09). Enjoy- I hope to do more- maybe an all-trail version, or attaching it to a boat, kayak, or vehicle.
