De ceva vreme sunt un mare amator de oferte. Urmaresc sa imi minimizez costurile dar sa imi sporesc serviciile. Cu alte cuvinte, vreau sa platesc mai putin dar sa am mai mult.

Asa se face ca si la internet am vanat acelasi lucru. Pana mai ieri am fost abonat la internet la iLink. Sa fie vreo 4 ani. Am crescut odata cu reteaua de cartier care mai tarziu a fost inghitita de iLink. Am avut abonamentul Gold (45 lei) cu 15Mbps extern si 100 Mbps metropolitan.

Tanjeam si dupa FiberLink care, o buna perioada de timp, nu a fost disponibila la mine in zona. Acum este! Si au si oferta:

Sunt constient ca nu voi prinde niciodata vitezele scrise acolo dar totusi este o oferta mai buna decat cea de la iLink.

Ce m-a surprins neplacut a fost dezinteresul celor de la iLink al caror client am fost atata timp. M-am dus sa imi reziliez contractul zilele trecute si am facut-o intr-un timp record. Nu m-a intrebat nimeni NIMIC despre motivele pentru care vreau sa renunt la contract. Mi s-a dat o cerere, am completat-o si PA, PA, PA! Frumos! Halal suport pentru clienti!

Anyway sper ca nu am facut o greseala ca am trecut la RDS cu toate ca am citit o gramada de povesti despre serviciile defectuoase si despre vitezele slabe.

A DV Cable or IEEE 1394 FireWire is a different name for iLink which is just a brand name used by Sony. What is it for? It’s used to connect your camcorder to other devices to rapidly transfer digital data.

Apple developed FireWire which, under the name IEEE 1394, was then taken up by the electronics industry to become the standard device for transfer. Just for identification purposes, iLink is the name recognized by Sony to their variation of the same cable.

It was in 1995 that FireWire became the industry standard since then it has been developed to achieve really fast speeds, usually up to 800 Mbps. Of course further development is under way and it’s muted that the velocity will reach over 3GPS, which is actually quite staggering.

The actual DV Cable is likely to be equipped with a 4 pin plug at one end, for plugging in to your camcorder, and a 6 pin plug at the other end to connect to your computer. Most modern computers are constructed with this facility and of course all camcorders have the required socket.

What does all this mean?

Quite a lot really. Many of us today have a camcorder and filming particular occasions and events, or recording the development of our kids say, well, this can be something really unique. The use of a FireWire cable not only makes it possible for us to then view the recordings on our desktop or laptop computer, it simplifies the entire procedure. And It’s quick!

Maybe you’d like to share the delights of your family or special event with the rest of the globe, now you can, merely by uploading a version of the video, now stored on your computer, and sending it to YouTube for instance.

And of course, if you have a commercial website then the advantages of being able to do all this assumes great significance. Whilst the written word cannot be substituted, promoting your merchandise or service through the medium of video is very definitely the way to go.

Such is the speed and convenience of FireWire transfer that you could very quickly develop and broadcast large amounts of videos on an ongoing basis. Such activity should result in a desirable outcome, backlinks, visitors and sales.

The point is you can do all this even if you’re not tech savvy. So, for layman and geek alike, the early and continuing development of this technology has proved to be vastly important. It has very definitely enhanced the pleasure and enjoyment element no end, irrespective of your skills level behind the camera.

What’s next?

Computers have become so innovative that we have to question whats next. For now, the easiest way to put video on your computer is by using a DV cable. Maybe in the future it will be done wireless. We could look forward to FireWire 3.0 or maybe there will not be any need for a cable at all. We would just press a button and instantly our video would appear on a computer. Wouldn’t that be great?We hope it remains to be easy to understand and use!

Din pacate serverele iLink care tin si domeniul meu de hosting al fisierelor este picat temporar. Cei care ati incercat sa accesati aceste resurse ati fost probabil intampinati cu un mare si frumos “Page cannot be displayed”. Nu disperati totusi, duduia de la suport a zis ca in maxim o saptamana serverele vor fi up si contentul la locul lui. Asa ca voi ce cautati NokiaJava.prov sunteti rugati sa mai poftiti pe aici si sa verificati daca linkul functioneaza pentru a downloada setarile mult dorite.

Din pacate in ultimele zile nu am mai fost in stare sa scriu nimic pe blog. In toata lumea asta urasc cel mai mult switchurile. Pe cat de folositoare si de utilizate pe atat de retardate. Nu am vazut pana acum un switch din segmentul home user care sa nu se blocheze cel putin odata. Fie asta problema ca ii dai un reset dar ce te faci cand switchul e la vecinul in casa si vecinul e plecat din localitate? De trei zile nemernicul ala de switch nu e in stare sa dea reply decat la pachete pana in 150 de bytes …asta la pinguri…nu mai vorbesc de un transfer de date minimal. Cum fara net nu puteam sa stau am infipt mufa USB in telefon si acum ma dau pe Orange WAP Unlimited de pe PC. Da sa stiti ca se poate! Daca in episoadele trecute (OWU1 si OWU2) am invatat cum sa folosim aceasta optiune pe telefon la putere maxima iar in OWU3 vom invata ce aplicatii sunt utile pentru telefonul nostru in episoadele imediat urmatoare va voi invata cum sa accesati internetul de pe PC prin aceasta extraoptiune. Nu va imaginati acum ca am viteze astronomice. Interfata de administrare a blogului se incarca cu viteza dialup si messul la fel dar e mai bine decat deloc. Macar nu stau sa ma joc Counter Strike cu booti toata ziua. Din pacate nu am nici inspiratie si nici chef de scris la ora asta dar promit ca de indata ce imi restaurez conexiunea la internet voi reveni in forta cu articole noi. Si nu uitati RSS Feedul va asteapta sa dati clic pe el.

I was very disappointed to hear that Apple decided NOT to include a Firewire port on their new “all-in-one” Aluminum Mac Book.  Now users will have to spring for the Pro model if they committed the sin of investing in any Firewire peripherals over the years.  Considering that Firewire is an Apple developed technology this move is more than puzzling.  TUAW has the details:

Intr’unul din posturile anterioare am folosit serviciile FreeStorage.ro pentru a hosta o arhiva a carui link se afla pe blog. Se pare ca cei de la FreeStorage nu dau nici un detaliu vis-a-vis de timpul de gazduire a fisierelor si am avut placuta surpriza sa vad ca dupa cateva zile de la uploadare fisierul meu nu mai era acolo unde trebuia sa fie. In consecinta fiind abonat iLink m’am gandit sa supun la munci grele facilitatile pe care acestia le ofera clientilor. In consecinta m’am decis sa hostez fisierele aditionale necesare blogului pe acest domeniu. Avantajele sunt evidente: uptimeul mare, hosting nelimitat ca timp si banda si bineinteles viteza cu care userii pot descarca aceste fisiere dat fiind faptul ca iLink are peering cu toate retelele mari din tara. Pentru a simplifica accesul la aceste fisiere am ales sa folosesc modul de Directory Listing oferind astfel capacitatea de a vedea toate fisierele care sunt disponibile pe server. Voi folosi in continuare hostingul oferit de WordPress pentru poze si alte minunatii din astea multimedia. Testat, verificat, released to public.

Cunoscuta firma de hinternet, “hailink”, iti trage teapa cat ai zice link, sau ma rog ilink. Pentru a figura pe listele lor de asteptari sunt enervanti de amabili. Unde s-a mai pomenit ca o consultanta in ip-uri si alte treburi d’ale hinternetului sa-si dea intalnire cu tine ca sa iti faca cea mai buna oferta de conectare?

In schimb, partea mai putin amabila, mai exact momentul in care esti tratat cu dosul apare atunci cand, dupa ce ai semnat contractatul, baietii trebuie sa-ti mai instaleze si internetul. Problema este, nu ca nu ar fi doritori sa-ti instaleze si tie internet intr-un termen cat mai util, ci faptul ca umbla cu “cioara vopsita”.

Spre exemplu este foarte posibil ca dupa vreo 7 zile de asteptare, de altfel la termen, sa primesti un telefon prin care esti anuntat ca ti-a venit si tie randul sa ai internet. Zis si facut! Dornic de a avea internet cat mai curand iti anulezi planurile pentru seara respectiva si stai si astepti. Procedand in stilul unor gentelmani de la munte, normal ca Dorel si colegii te lasa sa astepti. Si tot astepti pana cand ti se lungesc ochii pe ceas, intr-un final constatand ca deja au intarziere de vreo ora cei de la hailink. De altfel ei sunt bine intentionati, foarte sugestiva in acest sens fiind chiar imaginea de pe homepage-ul lor.

Disperat de atata asteptare normal ca dai un telefon. O idee prea buna nu se dovedeste a fi nici asta. Mai ales pentru ca echipele de pe teren nu pot fi contactate de catre utilizatori. De aceea sunand la hailink este foarte posibil sa ajungi intr-un final, dupa mai multe minute de asteptare in telefon si preluari de apel, la un nea’ Costica, coordonatorul echipei care trebuia sa ajunga la tine. Costica e atat afectat de faptul ca nu ai tu internet desi ti s-a spus sa stai acasa si sa astepti echipa trimisa de hainlink incat te calmeaza in stilul unui gentelman de la munte: “se mai intampla”.

Dupa care afli ca de fapt pentru ei un simplu client nu se afla pe lista de prioritati, in stilul aceluiasi gentelman. Astfel ca dorel a fost trimis impreuna cu echipa la o urgenta intr-o alta zona unde a picat curentul. Daca pana aici pare totusi de inteles mai de parte domnul coordonator gandeste cu dosul. Intrebat de ce clientul nu este anuntat despre o astfel de intarziere (care in acest caz urma sa fie de ceva mai mult de jumatate de zi) raspunde ca el nu poate contacta echipa pentru ca nu sunt dotati cu telefoane. “He, he… ce dastept sunt eu”, probabil ca si-ar spune domn’ Costica, intr-un astfel de moment.

Bun, dar cum de si-a trimis echipa la acea urgenta? O fi oare vreun yoghin sau este telepatic? In cazul acesta Dorel o fi aspirant.Misa… Pardon, mi s-a parut ca hailink-ul poate mai mult de atat. De aceea, sunat, sefului lui nea Costica s-ar putea sa fie atat de amabil cu tine incat atunci cand il intrebi cum il cheama pe seful sau incat sa te intrebe daca nu ploua afara. In final cursul sirul acestor evenimente s-ar putea dovedi dezarmant in cazul in care te gandesti sa depui o plangere. Cine stie peste ce alt boss “cu scaun la cap” mai dai. Desigur ca a urmat si un happy end in toata povestea asta. “Hailink” si-au bagat “cablul” iar clientul “rezilierea”.

Daca vezi ca nu-ti merge netul, mai ales daca a dat norocul peste tine si esti clientul baietilor astora, asigura-te ca atunci cand suni la ei nu mai are net inca vreo scara sau doua de bloc. Asta pentru a spera sa ti se rezolve in termen “util” problema: o zi – doua.

Microsoft, for whatever reason, decided to take 1394 networking out of vista. I have no clue why they thought that was a smart move, because with some computers 1394 Ad Hoc networking is 300MB/s faster! Well I found an alternate driver (it must be on both PCs) that makes it possible to use that functionality. Here are the drivers. Just give some fake information and click the correct ubCore driver for your system (32/64 bit). Now you may see this Firenet thing costing $20 and thinking you have to pay it, but afaic you don’t, just get the ubCore driver and you’re set. Now this thing looks like a pain to install (Click continue installation for all those pesky windows certification who-cares-what-it-is-windows.). Then you need bonjour/avahi to make sure your PCs recieve IP addresses over the cable. Now the possibilities of this are seeming limited because I couldn’t really get filesharing to work over it, sometimes they say they connect and don’t, etc. I got a BF2 Server/client model over it and it worked well, but as for other uses you may have to figure it out yourself. If you find something cool, let me know! I still kinda want to see what happens when you hook it up to linux, etc. Honestly, I haven’t really got around to the ethernet ad hoc network yet!

Yesterday, I mentioned how Cleary Gottlieb had borrowed knowledge engineering techniques from the military, to capture the expertise of senior staff, embed it in a computer system and pass it on to junior lawyers online, in the form intelligent online textbooks and knowledge maps. But I was left wondering about the system’s interactivity, intelligence, and the currency of information therein.

Today, having read about iLink – another military-funded project – I’m now wondering if the Cleary Gottlieb system incorporates any of the social-networking ‘AI’ features mentioned in that article (given the military connection!)?

iLink was developed as a part of the SRI-led CALO (Cognitive Agent that Learns and Organizes) programme and was funded and managed under DARPA’s PAL (Personalized Assistant that Learns) programme.  Mark Rutherford reports that:

iLink is a machine learning-based system that models users and content in a social network and then points the user to relevant content, discussions, and other network members with shared interests and goals across a broad range of scenarios.

To do this, the system uses message-matching technologies for finding related information, and algorithms for gathering data from multiple sources and compiling it together, whilst differentiating private information from that which is safe to share.

Now certain of those technology features/capabilities don’t sound too removed from some social software tools currently on (or almost ready for) the market.  For instance there’s:

• Newsgator ES – has smart feeds and recommendations.
• PagesPlus – allows content to be pushed out to the categories and pages corresponding to the tags, and to the users who are subscribing to feeds from those categories.
• IBM’s Beehive – currently in the research phase – with the capability to ‘recommend’ connections based on activities, tags, bookmarking, etc.
• Zemanta – blog posts, articles or web pages are directly “read” by Zemanta, which recognizes all contextual content. It then combs the web for the most relevant images, smart links, keywords and text, instantly serving these results to the user to enrich and inform their content.

Nevertheless, it is iLink’s learning capabilities, and SRI’s work in modeling how real-time, dynamic social networks communicate and cooperate to solve problems, that really spark the imagination.  Sarah Perez indicates that the technology:

[has been] used to develop a system for FAQ generation within a network – they call this technology “FAQtory”. With this technology implemented on a social network, FAQs are continuously generated and revised by the community using a Wikipedia-like model, as opposed to being static creations made by the site’s authors. [But it's no ordinary user-generated FAQ system] – instead, iLink’s FAQtory technology allows for incremental bits of information [to be added] – even those that don’t qualify as answers to the question. As the members contribute these bits of information, the learning system in iLink monitors how users are [attempting] to resolve queries and is then capable of drafting off the social network’s learning.

Potential commercial benefits and applications of such learning technology abound in business. Like expertise identification, comprehensive client information aggregation and delivery, FAQ generation and smart RSS filtering.  As members of, and information in, social networks increase exponentially, there is a growing need to move away from search and retrieval models of information and expertise location.  This is where smarter social technologies will help to streamline the process of recommending, and delivering, information and expertise (as well as filling-in information gaps as they go) to help people get their jobs done more effectively and efficiently.

IEEE 1394, better known under the brand names of Firewire and i.Link, will get a speed bump before the end of the year: The IEEE has approved the new IEEE 1394-2008 specification that provides support for a bandwidth of up to 3.2 Gb/s.

Firewire has come a long way. From the initial development by Apple in the late 1980s, to the technology’s completion in 1995 and surge in popularity in the early 2000s, the technology has become a serial bus interface common in Sony and Apple computers as well as a range of consumer electronics devices such as video cameras.

Most IEEE 1394 devices are still running on the S400 (400 Mb/s) specification despite the fact that S800 (800 Mb/s) was introduced with the IEEE 1394b spec in 2003. The problem with this spec was a different connector than the design that was used for S400. However, bilingual cables that are compatible with S400 and S800 ports are available. (link)

JVC ha actualizado sus famosas videocámaras JVC Everio añadiendo dos nuevos modelos, la GZ-HD40 y la GZ-HD30, dos videocámaras cuyas principales características son la grabación en alta definición (FullHD) y sus discos duros para almacenar nuestras grabaciones.

Ambos modelos son prácticamente iguales, variando tan solo en la capacidad del disco duro de 1.8 pulgadas, ofreciendo 80GB la GZ-HD30 y 120GB la GZ-HD40.

Las nuevas JVC Everio tienen además un sensor de 2.68 Megapíxeles, una pantalla de 2.8 pulgadas, conexiones para HDMI, AV, componentes, i.LINK, auriculares y puerto mini USB.

Destacar también el modelo GZ-HD10 el cual ofrece un disco duro de 40GB y algunas características algo más bajas para bolsillos más asequibles.

Por ahora ambos modelos de JVC Everio solo estarán disponibles en Japón con precios de 1.300 dólares (839 Euros) la GZ-HD40 y unos 1.000 dólares (645 Euros) la GZ-HD30.

Hemos visto todo tipo de subproductos creados a partir de Twitter, y este es — sin duda — el mejor de todos. Justin Wickett llegó a una interesante y asombrosa solución para contribuir al ahorro energético: pesco su laptop, le instaló iLink INSTEON, programó los comandos y la conectó a un concentrador de su dormitorio que, a su vez, estaba conectado al sistema eléctrico.

Así, el programa recibió un comando enviado a Twitter vía SMS; el sistema lo recibió, el software lo procesó, y… ¡presto! luces del dormitorio apagadas. ¿Su idea? Mejorarlo e implementarlo a gran escala en la Smart Home de la Universidad de Duke, de donde Wickett es alumno.
