Good news, everyone. My pinky finger is going to be okay… in three months. You no doubt saw my gruesome photo from Saturday’s basketball mishap. I was in a splint for a couple days before going to the orthopedic surgeon Monday. He told me I was fortunate as the tendons in that finger were merely torn, not severed, so I should keep my pinky strapped to my ring finger and slowly exercise it. Maybe in three months I’ll have my full range of motion back. Anyway, the injury looked much worse than it is.

In more pleasant news, Lauren and I are in talks with a travel agent as we try to finalize our official honeymoon this winter. We are considering options all over the Caribbean as long as they’re all-inclusive. Some top choices include resorts in the Dominican Republic, Bahamas, Jamaica, and Panama. Or we could go to Miami, but I hear there’s a trinity killer that highly resembles actor John Lithgow on the loose. If you have any advice or recommendations before we make a decision, let us know!

Finally, happy birthday wishes are in order today to father-in-law Steve Poulter, who turned the big 6-0 today. Also happy birthday to good friend, former DSU roommate, and aspiring math professor Chris Ahrendt who turns 27 today. And let’s not forget that tomorrow, the 19th, we should all wish my mother, Marcie Glanzer, a happy birthday! I’ll have to wait and see what the Krogman children come up with this time so I can copy their present.

I’ve already been milking this injury for the past 15 hours, but I want your pity as well.

My poor hand at the ER.

I went to the gym Saturday afternoon to work out when I ran into Feeney and Kyle and joined them for basketball instead. We were playing this game called 21 where it was basically 2-on-1, each man for himself. I was shooting a free throw, but I decided to trick them and throw the ball hard off the backboard so I could go get my own rebound and get the ball back. I threw the ball too hard, perhaps, as it resulted in my finger getting jammed… or so I thought. I looked down, and my finger was slightly more than jammed.

The YWCA staff wrapped my hand up and Feeney took me to the hospital down the street. I went into the ER and soon a doctor came in, grabbed my finger, and popped it back into place. It was quite painful, as you can see it was dislocated in two separate places. X-rays were taken as a precaution, and it turned out to be more serious than expected. A bone was chipped and the tendons/ligaments appear to have snapped clean in half. The pinky and ring fingers were splinted together, and I was told to make an appointment with a hand surgeon on Monday.

Thanks to Bradley Feeney for taking me to the hospital and hanging around the ER. Kyle Dahl showed his support as well by joining us at the hospital. Eventually Lauren was contacted and able to come over with my insurance info.

The pain isn’t terrible, but there’s clearly some discomfort. Typing is a little tricky with two fingers incapable of contributing.

In other news, my kind wife Lauren agreed to let me cash in a good chunk of the Target gift cards from the wedding and get a PlayStation 3! (This was on Friday before the injury, so it wasn’t out of pity.) I’m not known to be an avid gamer, but the sports games are always fun, and the PS3 does much more than play games. Walsh already came over and got a network set up so we can download shows on Lauren’s computer and watch them through the PS3. We also are streaming Netflix, which works pretty slick! If we had Blu-ray discs, we could play them too.

That’s all for this morning. We have a busy day of watching the Vikings game before heading over to the Poulters’ to celebrate Steve’s 60th!

By Melissa Healy

November 14, 2009

Long after the painful stomach cramps and bloody diarrhea associated with tainted food are over, many people suffer long-term health effects, mostly unrecognized, that are the result of food-borne pathogens. These lingering effects — premature death, paralysis, kidney failure and a lifetime of seizures or mental disability — may cause more disability, lost productivity, doctor visits and hospitalizations than the acute illnesses that follow exposure to a food-borne toxin.

A pair of reports released this week by the Center for Foodborne Illness Research & Prevention shed some light on this issue. They also point out that such pathogens hit hardest among the youngest patients.

Children under 4 are disproportionately the victims of poisoning by Campylobacter, E. coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes and salmonella. And roughly half of all reported cases of food-borne illness affect those younger than 15. Because younger kids are smaller, it takes a smaller dose of harmful bacteria to sicken them, and their less-experienced immune systems don’t combat food-borne pathogens as effectively as do those of adults. Here’s a list of the chief culprits, the foods in which they’re most commonly found, and some of the possible long-term consequences of infection, all from the reports released Thursday:

Salmonella. The leading cause of food-borne illness in the United States, salmonella is harbored by foods with animal origins, including beef, poultry, milk and eggs. It causes 16,000 illnesses and 556 deaths per year. It can cause reactive arthritis — painful and swollen joints mainly in the lower limbs — from which patients generally recover in two to six months. Eye irritation and painful urination can also be long-term effects.

Campylobacter. Food-borne sources are raw and undercooked poultry, unpasteurized milk and contaminated water. It causes an estimated 2 million acute human illnesses (the vast majority in children under 4) and 124 deaths yearly. Long-term effects can include Guillain-Barre syndrome, an acquired and sometimes permanent paralysis, reactive arthritis and chronic arthritis.

E. coli O157:H7. Disproportionately affecting people under 19, E. coli can taint ground beef and other meats, green leafy vegetables, unpasteurized (or raw) milk and cheeses made from such milk. About 15% of children infected with E. coli O157:H7 develop hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can lead to kidney failure, chronic kidney problems, diabetes, high blood pressure, gallstones, irritable bowel syndrome, narrowed gastrointestinal passages and neurological problems — including seizures — that can take as long as four years to resolve.

Listeria monocytogenes. An estimated 2,500 in the U.S. are infected with listeria each year, and roughly 500 die. Listeria monocytogenes contaminates not only meat or poultry but also vegetables grown in contaminated soil or fertilizer. Cold cuts, hot dogs, smoked seafood, raw milk and soft cheeses are common sources. In pregnant women, listeriosis can kill the fetus, cause premature delivery, or lead to mental retardation, hearing loss or brain damage in the newborn. Adults can suffer neurological effects and cardiorespiratory failure.

Another pandemic week of horror is over. Now we all sit save and sound in our homes and are happy, that we’re still alive. This plague, millions of people…
Oh, sorry, that was the book I’m recently reading. (Author coughs ashamed, because of the humble mistake made.)

Well, let’s stick to the point.

Today I’ll try to show you a few pros and cons regarding the swine flu. The informations available are scattered all over the net and the media, and in addition, they are wrong and are used as propaganda most of the time, as we will see.

Let’s start at a completely different side: the ordinary flu.
To compare, how dangerous the swine flu really is, and what might kill you faster. The use of statistics is difficult, because all the institutions making these are paid by pharmaceutical companies. So it stands in question if they are to be taken seriously.
Though, I will show some of them.
So, here is one example:
“In the U.S., an estimated 25–50 million cases of the flu are currently reported each year — leading to 150,000 hospitalizations and 30,000–40,000 deaths yearly. If these figures were to be estimated incorporating the rest of the world, there would be an average of approximately 1 billion cases of flu, around 3–5 million cases of severe illness, and 300,000–500,000 deaths annually.”

So, if that was true, one might ask, why the vaccine for the ordinary flu isn’t as urgent, as the swine flu vaccine.

Let’s compare that to the numbers of the swine flu:

Worldwide statistics of the H1N1 Influenza:

total 64435

deaths 8223

Remember, that is the number of infections/deaths WORLDWIDE.

So, if what they state is true, the ordinary influenza seems to be more dangerous than the swine flu. Always keep in mind, where the numbers are taken from. So, better question each and every one of them.

Another problem is, that the numbers are presumed, meaning, that only a fraction of people being sick have the H1N1 virus and in addition only a very small number of infected are tested for the H1N1 virus. So, the numbers don’t reflect anything real. They are an example for the use of a mathematical formula which is used to try and calculate how it could be. It is in no way whatsoever an irrevocable number or way to reflect reality.

Ok, let’s go on.

A history of swine flu:

A few days after the first infections of swine flu came to light, Sir Roy Anderson, a consultant of the british government, announced the swine flu to be a pandemic and stated that there are two effective medications. What he didn’t tell was, that he’s also getting money – 136.000 per year – from GlaxoSmithKline the producer of Pandemrix, the vaccine, and Zanamivir (a medicine).

45 days after the first infections emerged the WHO declared the swine flu as a pandemic. They deleted two points on the pandemic scale and voila here we go.

Then action was taken and an ‘International Swine Flu Conference’ took place. The brochure, you can download under the given link, gives a very vivid picture of what was discussed and planned. Let me give you a few examples:

“Know How To Respond
Recognize problems earlier. Make the right decision faster.
How to Plan
Make everyone a stakeholder. Spell out roles and responsibilities
Plan To Continue
Maintain cash flow and work flow. Keep the learning process alive.
Protect Your Community
Know your resources. Test them against your toughest scenarios.”

So far so ludicrous. Even when it sounds more like a computer game intro, let me continue and see for yourself, what kind of audience this brochure is made for:

“Top leaders and key decision-makers of major companies representing a broad range of industries will meet with distinguished scientists, public health officials, law enforcers, first responders, and other experts to discuss pandemic prevention, preparedness, response and recovery at the 1st
International Swine Flu Summit.
At the summit, attendees will be able to draw on first-hand best practices to create the solid business continuity plans that their companies and organizations need in order to prepare for, respond to, and survive a pandemic.”

So, as you can easily see, it is more a guide to “monetary stabilization in case of a pandemic” than how to protect the public. Though, they thought about that as well. Let me show you:

“Concurrent Breakout Session #2

Psychological Issues

Public’s distress of exposure and safety
Breakdown of public services, utilities
Medical supplies shortage
Unwillingness to follow government orders“

Especially the last point is very interesting.

All in all, they presumed 15 different break out sessions/scenarios. I could go on for hours. So take a look at the brochure yourself!

Now, let’s continue.

So, in a hurry they started producing the vaccine, of which no one really knows if it is working. Similar to the medications doctors prescribe. More and more people warn, that the virus is on its way to become resistant against Tamiflu, Zanamivir or for that matter, everything that is available on the market. But doctors, with a swing in their step, prescribe it without testing the patient for H1N1.

What they didn’t reckon was, that the big pandemic wouldn’t arrive. That meant, that there would be no big cash flow, no rising fear, no panic – well worst again – no money.

And what did they do?

Suddenly the numbers of infections increased rapidly and slogans arose like:

“When you’re not vaccinated, you’re a danger to other people. Do you want to be responsible, if somebody dies of swine flu because you infected him?”

“Numbers of infected increase rapidly! WHO advise people to get the vaccine!”

So, we’re back in the cosy land of fear and pressure.

What many people do not know is, that the WHO and the national health and science institutes are sponsored and advised by GSK, Baxter, Roche, Aventis the companies producing and earning money with vaccines and medications.

For example:

Sir Roy Anderson – UK government advisor

Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Jörg Hacker – Germany government advisor and president of the Robert Koch institute

And besides, when the slogan of something is:

Save money and make money with US health advisors

I think there is no need to add anything.

The thing is, that many people think, you could die of the virus itself. But that is a misbelief. If you die, other illnesses are responsible for that, like a pneumonia, which when not treated properly or if you are too weak and your immune system collapses, can cause death. This is not only possible with H1N1 but with every bloody illness you can get.

I left out all the other causes that can be responsible for death because there are too many. Death is a risk of life itself, better live with it, then.

Now, let’s get to the vaccines.

Not only are they not tested, they don’t even know if they work. (I mentioned that earlier!) Now, they had this great idea of substitute adjuvant of which no one knows what they could cause. When there was the first swine flu epidemic in 1976 they caused more trouble with the vaccine than the flu itself could have ever done.

They really made nice commercials, though.

Of course there are many rumours about what else hides behind the flu and the vaccine and what will come up next.

I also want to remind everybody of the bird flu, which was, in fact, more dangerous, but then nobody called for whether a pandemic nor a vaccine. Also, I’m asking myself, why on one hand it is called swine flu, when no pig ever died of it, not even showed signs of infection? While on the other hand the birds surely died from bird flu.

Mysteries of the world.

P.S. Well, the pros got a bit short, so here’s one: Your child won’t be an outcast anymore in school, when it is vaccinated.

And another thing is…

What really got me thinking was, when a friend of mine went to the doctor’s because she was ill (which was a few moths ago!) and a woman went to the receptionist and asked if they could remove my friend from the waiting room, because the woman was afraid it could be the swine flu and didn’t want to be infected. And, believe it or not, they did it. My friend had to wait somewhere else – at the reception. Witty, if you ask me…

But today, in the times of the big pandemic, this is normal procedure. When you go to the doctor, before you get into the waiting room a nurse will come around, ask why you are there. If you have symptoms similar to those caused by flu, you get a mask and not until then you will be led into the doctor’s surgery.

Paranoia really blossoms in the face of fear.

UPDATE 11/18/2009: Well, my friends, I don’t know if you’ve already heard it, but there have been some deaths being connected with the swine flu vaccine. Strange, that I haven’t heard of it in the news. It is true, that a few newspapers printed one or two sentences about it. Of course there are many reasons to die of a vaccine and not only the swine flu vaccine has terrible and dangerous side effects. But it seems to happen more often than usual because of the adjuvant. Many people had allergic reactions and people with pre-existing conditions are at risk. But though they tell us that especially these high-risk groups should go and have the vaccine. Logic? Someone? Anywhere?

Besides, buy some Tamiflu, because the date of expiry is coming nearer…

It is true. My informant told me (he works in a hospital), that the packages they bought when bird flu “broke out” will expire at the end of the year. So, maybe now you get why it is urgent to sell as much Tamiflu etc. as possible in the last and next few months: Because if not sold now, it won’t ever be sold. This would mean a big loss of money for the pharmaceutical industry.

Ka-ching!

Aaaaand another update 11/20/2009:

So, good news. As was published by an independent website, at least the Germans knew 2007 that swine flu was coming. This is shown by an official report about the vaccine trade between GSK and the German government, which was now published. Finally! Because actually absolute silence was arranged between GSK and the german government about this event.

You can read it here, but it’s in german. Sorry guys! But of course, those things would never be published in different languages, so that everybody could understand and read them. The reasons for that are known, I hope.

Time for a weekend recap! Friday after work it was “date night” at Buffalo Wild Wings for me and Lauren. We sat at the bar (rather than waiting in a 35-minute line for a table) and were delighted to find someone had left a bunch of credits in the tabletop game thingy. So we sat and had a couple beers and lots of delicious boneless wings. At night Jason stopped by to hang out.

Saturday, Lauren went to earn some big bucks by working OT, while Jason and I went to the Metrodome for the Twins Metrodome moving sale. I thought this sale would be very cool—my one big chance at buying an authentic piece of Twins history. Apparently, so did 15,000 other people. We got there when it opened at 10am and our jaws hit the ground when we saw the line stretched all the way around the Metrodome and down the street. Over the speakers, a recorded message stated “you may experience a short wait in line.” That was the understatement of the day. They had a queue up at the entrance that would corral about 100 fans. The other 14,900 filed in behind. Very poor job by the team organizing that sale. I heard there were just two checkout counters, causing a 90-minute wait just in the checkout lines.

Dejected and unwilling to kill six hours to get halfway through line, Jason and I instead went out for breakfast at the Uptown Diner, home of Minneapolis’s largest, unhealthiest, most delicious portions of hashbrowns.

That night it was off to the Profile Event Center to DJ my first wedding dance since our own. The couple was very nice and fed me a filet mignon dinner. The highlight of their reception was a choreographed dance during the introductions featuring the wedding party dancing to “I Got a Feeling” by Black Eyed Peas. Their dance rivaled ours in terms of crowd participation, but an exhausted bride and groom pulled the plug on the dance shortly after midnight despite their raucous guests enjoying themselves.

Sunday, Lauren and I met up with the Berglund-Husebys for the Bar Abilene breakfast buffet. If you’re looking for a good southern-style breakfast buffet and bottomless $4.95 mimosas and no wait in line, this is the place to go! Then I spent the afternoon watching football, including the Chargers’ amazing 21-20 win over the Giants. I took a late afternoon jog around Lake of the Isles to get some exercise, and my God, the pain. My upper left abdomen was in such sharp pain I could take no more than ten steps before I’d have to stop running. The pain never really subsided, but I eventually just fought through it and ran home. It still hurts today. I wonder if I didn’t strain a ribcage muscle or something. Then we watched Dexter, some more House from Netflix, and went to bed.

Can you believe it – diseases that were most common in the Victorian era are making their way to London.

Infections such as whooping cough, measles, mumps, and tuberculosis are spreading rapidly amongst us, says the Department of Health.

Rare infections including scarlet fever and typhoid have increased by 166 per cent in the past 24 months. While the number of mumps cases has risen from 125 in 2007 to 393 last year – which is an increase of 214 per cent.

Conditions such a rickets and scurvy, have also sparked health warnings across London.

Yes it’s worrying, as cases of rashes and high fever are also up 153 per cent since 2005 – with 501 infected in the City last year.

Just last year, Justine Greening, the Shadow Minister for London, said the rise could be linked to the result of parents refusing the MMR jab after claims made in 2001 – that it might caught autism.

High fever

The Department of Health revealed the rise in the MMR has fallen by 85 per cent for two-year-olds. It has been argued that without the vaccination, mumps can damage the nervous system in the development of children.

MMR

Dr Colin Michie, consultant paediatrician at Ealing Hospital, West London was concerned last year, about the rise of diseases within children. She believes they are “completely preventable” if the child is MMR vaccinated.

Perhaps he is correct. Perhaps he is wrong, but it seems Victorian infections, which started with the mumps and measles 160 years ago, resulting in thousands of deaths, are crawling their way back.

Professor David Salisbury, director of immunisation from the Department of Health, believes the ancient diseases will keep increasing. He also said: “There will be a measles epidemic at some point.”

Victorian Infections

In fact he is correct – the changes in social conditions and public health has increased TB from 5,658 in 1998 to 8,497 in 2007 and the number will continue to increase this year.

Meanwhile, the re-emergence of the infections has been linked to fewer people having balanced meals and lower intakes of vitamin C and D, throughout the country.

In response to this, the Conservatives are blaming the Government for the steadily rise of the diseases. I think this is utter nonsense.

Labour cannot be blamed for how we eat or wash. We live our own lives and we dictate what we eat and how we live. We are our own infections enemies.

This sounds so disgusting – but it’s a fact, we’re living in the slumdog era. Yuck.

Well, Emma did it again…we have another facial contusion to add to the list. Last night the kids were downstairs by themselves when we heard loud crying. I ran down and Emma was standing behind the couch crying hard. She ran over to me and I was thrilled that there wasn’t any blood. Shew. But there was a big red blotch near her eye and a scrape and bump on her forhead. I asked her, “Emma, did you fall off the back of the couch?”

“Yes,” she sobbed.

“Now do you understand why Mommy tells you not to climb on the couch?” I asked.

“Whyyyyyyy”, she cried harder. *Sigh* The little girl just doesn’t understand that her daredevil ways lead to injuries. Thankfully, this time, it just looked like she’d just have a shiner and a bump on the head. Yes, I said looked that way. That was last night. Today, however, when I picked them up at Danielle’s, she came running up to me with a big, fat, split lip. Danielle said, “Well, Emma took a little spill. She was trying to climb on the couch.” *Sigh*

I know it could be worse. She’s very lucky that she hasn’t hurt herself too seriously. Knock wood, because I don’t think the message is sinking in.

Acupuncture originated in China more than 5,000 years ago and continues to be a part of Traditional

Acupuncture originated in China more than 5,000 years ago and continues to be a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The acupuncture points provide gateways to influence, redirect, increase, or decrease the body’s vital substances, qi (energy) & blood, to help correct many of the body’s imbalances.

You are probably thinking “ouch” but actually, the needles used for acupuncture are very thin and delicate. You will not even feel most of them go in if you have a good practitioner. And once the needles are in, you still won’t feel them except for feeliing maybe extra pressure in that area for a moment. On one of my visits for acupuncture, I started to get up, thinking all the needles were out. The ones I could see were gone but there was still one in my forehead, which I didn’t realize was still there. It is a very relaxing experience and not at all painful.

I saw a presentation on senior care in China recently and it was noted that most of their nursing homes offer acupuncture treatments for everything from stroke to memory loss to depression. It is routinely provided as part of the senior’s daily activities- grab breakfast and then show up for an acupuncture treatment.

Acupuncture is beginning to be covered by more health insurance plans in the U.S. and offered in integrative medicine programs at hospitals and clinics. In addition, more acupuncture research studies are being done to provide us westerners with the proof we seem to need before giving something new a try. And much of this research is studying the benefits of acupuncture for age-related illnesses. If it benefits the elderly in other countries, it can benefit the elderly in our country.

One national study showed half of 78 stroke patients receiving standard rehabilitative care, who also received acupuncture treatment recovered faster and to a greater extent, spending 88 days in a hospital or nursing home compared to 161 days for those without acupuncture treatment. And guess what? This saves dollars for insurance companies which is another reason acupuncture research is taking place and the reason there is a movement to incorporate it into health insurance plans.

I have found acupuncture to work amazingly well and to be the most cost-effective treatment for ailments. I fell on my elbow a couple years ago and several months later still had a bump on my elbow along with shooting pain, at times, when my elbow hit something just wrong. One acupuncture treatment later and the bump disappeared, along with the pain. All for just $35 at my local college of oriental medicine.

As a caregiver, you may want to find out what acupuncture offerings are available in your area and if there are discounted pricing for seniors – the clinic near me does offer senior discounts.

Inspired by issues over healthcare reform and people panicking over swine flu, I’d like to tal

Inspired by issues over healthcare reform and people panicking over swine flu, I’d like to talk to my fans (if any) about the five most dangerous diseases, illnesses, and mental syndromes that can affect you thanks to the Internet.

Snarkolepsy: A debilitating condition where a blogger known for sarcastic reviews on books/movies/TV shows momentarily loses his/her sardonic sense of humor and (*gulp*) begins liking what they review. The periods are temporary and the blogger will have no memory of what happened. Those that do will only remember small chunks of what happened.

Troy Steele’s Blogger Beware is a textbook case of this.

Like most of the diseases here, there is no cure, but there are ways to prevent it. Make sure whatever you snark is devoid of any redeeming qualities that would trigger a snarkoleptic spell. If you have blog commentors stating that whatever you’re snarking on is actually good, it’s best that these comments are erased or put under a moderation system (WordPress.com and Blogger have these options). If you can, create a blog post or side page blurb reminding readers that any comment that is inflammatory in any way (racist, sexist, homophobic, etc) will be deleted without a second thought. That way, the genuinely nice comments can get ditched along with the not-so-nice ones.

If snarkolepsy is not treated immediately, it can quickly turn into…Blogger’s Blight. Blogger’s Blight is a full-blown disinterest in your blog due to lack of material (as opposed to having a life outside the blog. This is normal). This has led to many blogs not being updated in months or even years. The only cures for this condition is to either re-energize the blog (through many successive blog posts) until it stabilizes or delete it (though there is controversy over whether a blighted blog has the right to stay on the Internet [despite not being updated in months] or be taken off the blogosphere and erased).

Search Overload: You’ve seen the Bing.com commercials — where people are brainwashed into spouting keywords from Internet search engines? Well, much like Tourette Syndrome (not to be confused with Torrent Syndrome), Search Overload doesn’t always focus on spouting nonsensical/obscene words (though this is what people think of when someone mentions both Tourette and Search Overload). Any uncontrollable tic or affliction associated with Internet search engines is considered Search Overload (such as an abnormal sexual desire for Jeeves from AskJeeves.com or Mamma from Mamma.com, being only able to see the world in the colors in Google’s standard logo [and the special ones done for holidays and special events], etc). The best bit of prevention you can take is to limit your search engine time to ten minutes (five, if you know what you’re looking for) and always keep a list of relevant websites so you can just type it out on the address bar.

Smileypox (a.k.a Emoticon Hives): Simply put, this is the overuse of emoticons — you know, the smiley face, the angry face, and these: ^__^, O_0, and <@:) — in any email or forum post. This can be cured by either trashing the email or reporting the forum post as spam. If the person objects, tell them there was a system error and you had nothing to do with it. To prevent it, just SAY what you’re feeling rather than express it with trite, little symbols. Websites that are afflicted with this disease include: The Something Awful.com Forums and any forum site (particularly those dedicated to childhood cartoons and anything “retro”). Once you register on any of these sites, the CIDC (Center for Internet Disease Control) will have no choice but to quarantine you.

Finally, we have what I consider to be the deadliest illness out there: Facebook Flu (caused by the F1B1 virus). Facebook Flu has cost many a computer-bound office worker to lose his job; many a potential employee to be passed up due to incriminating photos being displayed. Like all social network sites, it’s okay to visit these in moderation. With Facebook Flu, this moderation can easily teeter into full-blown obsession, thanks to the many apps, quizzes, games, and chances to chat with people you’ve haven’t seen in ages. I should know; I’m currently being rehabilitated for this with a cocktail of humor list websites, computer games that can be played offline, and the occasional logging off session.

This is just the tip of the Internet disease iceberg. The diseases that have just been discovered, but not researched yet are as follows:

Shark-Jumpers’ Dementia

DTD: Digitally Transmitted Disease

W00ting Cough (formerly known as “Hacker’s Cough”)

MySpace Malaise

Router Rash

Toxic Shock Site Syndrome

Software Crack Addiction

Meme Malaise

Down(loaders) Syndrome

Viral Video Infection

Forum Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

These will all be addressed on the next episode of “Your Guide to Internet-Based Diseases/Illnesses/Syndromes.”

Fiction writing is about communicating as much as possible within the story line. Every writing clas

Fiction writing is about communicating as much as possible within the story line. Every writing class you take will exhort you to show not tell. As Samuel Clemens said,

“Don’t tell us that the old lady screamed.
Bring her on and let her scream.”

You will often have your characters become sick in the novel. It creates drama. It helps the reader feel empathy for the protagonist or enmity for the antagonist. Maybe it serves the plot line. Here are some ideas you can use if your character is sick:

Dehydration

Dark urine with a very strong odor.

Low urine output.

Dark, sunken eyes.

Fatigue.

Emotional instability.

Loss of skin elasticity.

Delayed capillary refill in fingernail beds.

Trench line down center of tongue.

Thirst. Last on the list because you are already 2 percent dehydrated by the time you crave fluids.

Scorpion Stings

Scorpions are all poisonous to a greater or lesser degree. There are two different reactions, depending on the species:

Severe local reaction only, with pain and swelling around the area of the sting. Possible prickly sensation around the mouth and a thick-feeling tongue.

Severe systemic reaction, with little or no visible local reaction includes respiratory difficulties, thick-feeling tongue, body spasms, drooling, gastric distention, double vision, blindness, involuntary rapid movement of the eyeballs, involuntary urination and defecation, and heart failure. Death is rare, occurring mainly in children and adults with high blood pressure or illnesses.

Treat scorpion stings as you would a black widow bite.

Snakebites

Deaths from snakebites are rare. Snake venoms not only contain poisons that attack the victim’s central nervous system (neurotoxins) and blood circulation (hemotoxins), but also digestive enzymes (cytotoxins) to aid in digesting their prey. These poisons can cause a very large area of tissue death, leaving a large open wound. This condition could lead to the need for eventual amputation if not treated.

Bites from a nonpoisonous snake will show rows of teeth. Bites from a poisonous snake may have rows of teeth showing, but will have one or more distinctive puncture marks caused by fang penetration. Symptoms may be bleeding from the nose and anus, blood in the urine, pain at the site of the bite, and swelling at the site of the bite within a few minutes or up to 2 hours later.

Breathing difficulty, paralysis, weakness, twitching, and numbness are also signs of neurotoxic venoms. These signs usually appear 1.5 to 2 hours after the bite.

Stings

See the image at the right for an image. After your character is stung, be sure to follow these instructions to relieve the itching and discomfort:

Cold compresses.

A cooling paste of mud and ashes.

Sap from dandelions.

Coconut meat.

Crushed cloves of garlic.

Onion.

Spider Bites

Brown recluse spider bite

The black widow spider is identified by a red hourglass on its abdomen. The initial pain is not severe, but severe local pain rapidly develops. The pain gradually spreads over the entire body and settles in the abdomen and legs. Abdominal cramps and progressive nausea, vomiting, and a rash may occur. Weakness, tremors, sweating, and salivation may occur. Anaphylactic reactions can occur. Symptoms begin to regress after several hours and are usually gone in a few days.

The brown recluse spider is a small, light brown spider identified by a dark brown violin on its back. There is no pain, or so little pain, that usually a victim is not aware of the bite. Within a few hours a painful red area with a mottled cyanotic center appears. Necrosis does not occur in all bites, but usually in 3 to 4 days, a star-shaped, firm area of deep purple discoloration appears at the bite site. The area turns dark and mummified in a week or two. The margins separate and the scab falls off, leaving an open ulcer. Secondary infection and regional swollen lymph glands usually become visible at this stage. The outstanding characteristic of the brown recluse bite is an ulcer that does not heal but persists for weeks or months. In addition to the ulcer, there is often a systemic reaction that is serious and may lead to death. Reactions (fever, chills, joint pain, vomiting, and a generalized rash) occur chiefly in children or debilitated persons.

Tarantulas are large, hairy spiders found mainly in the tropics. Most do not inject venom, but some South American species do. If bitten, pain and bleeding are certain, and infection is likely. Treat a tarantula bite as for any open wound, and try to prevent infection. If symptoms of poisoning appear, treat as for the bite of the black widow spider.

I know. Not a lot, but these are the only illnesses my characters have come across in my novels so far. Would you share yours so we-all can develop a database?

Ugh…there is nothing worse than Mommy getting sick! But I couldn’t avoid it, and yesterday and today I have felt miserable. I haven’t been nausious, or had a fever, but I literally feel like I’ve been run over by a Mack truck. I have had no energy at all, and even when I am out of bed, I end up laying on the couch and falling asleep. I have slept more in the last two days than I have in the last two weeks, I think! It sucks.

I hope that I can go to work tomorrow, because Emma is still full of fever, and she’ll be staying home with Grandma. They certainly don’t need me home sick, too! I just hope that this will be our entire round of sickness for the winter. Wouldn’t we be lucky to have that happen…

Ben just threw up for the first time since he’s been a “big boy”. Dave and I were sitting downstairs watching TV when we heard him yelling for us. Dave quickly went upstairs and then shortly after I heard, “Honey, we need you up here!” Always a bad sign. I won’t go into details, but it wasn’t pretty. We both think that he threw up not because he has the flu, but because he’s so conjested that he gagged himself while coughing. He was also burning up with fever…it was up to 103.5°! That’s just so scary when you see a number like that on the thermometer.

Dave and I both felt so badly, but when he went to bed he was perfectly fine, so there was really no way we could predict this. He’s been stuffed up the last couple of days, but this fever just came from nowhere. Obviously, this means that Ben will be staying home tomorrow. Thankfully Grandma Kerber can come in and stay with him so that neither of us will have to take time off. I’m sure that he’ll get a lot of attention and cuddles from Grandma, too, which is always nice when you’re sick.

And so it begins…the cold and flu season is upon us, whether we’re ready for it or not. I have a feeling it’s going to be a long one this year, but hopefully I’m just being pessimistic!

How many hours in a day do you exercise? Is your work sedentary in nature? Do you eat your meals on time? Are you fond of junk food? Are you stressed at your work place? How many cigarettes do you smoke? Do you have more than one cup of a coffee a day? Do your parents suffer from any heart disease or diabetes or any other ailment? Did your grand parents expire at an early age? Have you ever experienced any palpitations, breathlessness, dizziness or headache?

…And you thought you were in pink of health. You may be in sound health and look absolutely robust but that doesn’t save you from getting illnesses.

Very often you must have heard someone in your family suffering from a heart disease or undergoing bypass surgery or having diabetes or kidney failure or joint problems or some other health issue. But has this ever made you assess your own health status? Yes, family history is very vital and it can save you from a lot of trouble that diseases bring along

Health is wealth, but have you taken any step to preserve this wealth? So, it is high time to save yourself from diseases for a healthy and wealthy life!

Woo-Hoo times Two!!! It’s been more than a week since I posted an entry and that has been intentional. During our last weigh-in, I was shocked to find that after a week of working with the trainer and a renewed attitude, instead of losing weight, I had managed to gain 1.2 pounds. To make matters worse, WDIV was onsight for last week’s meeting and challenge.

I can’t possibly describe the feeling of defeat and anguish that took hold when those numbers glared at me from the scale. I was literally on the verge of crying and I am thankful for fellow contestant Eugenia, who pulled me to the side and offered some much needed words of encouragement. For the remainder of the day I simply felt like “what’s the point of sweating and sacrificing when there are no positive results?”

Well…what a difference a week makes!! Eugenia’s words were positive seeds sown into a-then wilting spirit. “I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me (Philippians 4:13).” So I got over my own foolishness and went back to the drawing board.

I committed to working out even harder and being ever the more mindful of my caloric intake. Having a busy schedule was no longer an excuse for failing to properly prepare my meals. As my pastor, Rev. D.L. Harville says, “An excuse is simply an opportunity for failure.” I dug my heels in deeper and this past week, I was more determined to never experience that feeling of defeat. The end result…4.6 pounds lost!!

The best part of it all is that for the first time in years, I am under 200 pounds!!! I’ve been floating on a cloud all day and I’m even more confident that this is just the beginning of what is sure to be a photo finish at the end of this competition. Even if I don’t win, I’m just excited over the possibility of losing more weight, becoming stronger, and reducing my risk for life-threatening illnesses.

So whatever happens from this point on, I can gladly say to those 200+ pounds – Good-Bye and Good Riddance! MUAH!!

Peanut had just gotten over an ear infection when I noticed her stumbling around and falling. I thought maybe she still had fluid on her ear. I took her to the pediatrician where they told me her ears looked great. They had her walk and the doctor told me she was limping. She immediately wrote up orders for us to go to the ER. I freaked out. She wanted lab work and x-rays done. What I did not fully understand was she was checking for a bacterial infection that could have permanently damaged her walking. She did not have this but a virus most likely settled into her hip and has caused the painless limp. I am giving her Motrin everyday and that has helped but she is still limping. It should be gone within a week. They first told me it was reactive arthritis but I googled that and it is caused from a sexually transmitted disease along with gastrointestinal issues which she did not have so I fould what her pediatrician called it. I am just so thankful it was not bacterial fluid or something neurological. She was well taken care of at our local children’s ER. Here is the link to what this illness is called.

Epidemic levels

DUBAI (Loukia Papadopoulos)’

Despite the fact that it is widely practiced across the Middle East, marrying within the family might not be such a good idea, according to a report published Tuesday. The report by the Dubai-based Center for Arab Genomic Studies (CAGS) said Arabs have one of the highest rates of genetic disorders mainly due to consanguinity, or marriages between close relatives.

” Prevalence of genetic diseases is very high in the UAE compared to the rest of the world, so it is a major concern. It also puts a lot of burden on the government financially. We need to prepare strategies with a special focus on genetics “

Dr. Ghazi Omar Tadmouri, Assistant Director of CAGS The genetic research institute found that around 63 percent of the genetic conditions found in Arabs, who often practice marriage between relatives, were related to consanguinity and warned the numbers were likely to rise as more research is conducted and more disorders discovered.

In the United Arab Emirates, a country with the fifth highest rate of inter-family marriages, there are currently more than 250 types of genetic diseases, the second highest after neighboring Oman.

“Prevalence of genetic diseases is very high in the UAE compared to the rest of the world, so it is a major concern. It also puts a lot of burden on the government financially. We need to prepare strategies with a special focus on genetics,” Dr. Ghazi Omar Tadmouri, assistant director of CAGS, said in a statement.

CAGS has so far completed studies in the UAE, Oman and Bahrain and plans to continue extensive research throughout the Arab world.

Epidemic levels

” The chance of genetic diseases increases with each consanguine marriage between defective gene carriers. A genetic pool with a long history of such marriages would indeed bread very interesting results “

Dr. Anain YvorraReports have found that several genomic diseases such as the blood disorder thalassaemia, diabetes, breast cancer and Down’s syndrome have reached epidemic levels, more than 100 cases per 100,000, in the three Gulf countries researched so far.

Ghazi said building the database was important as “it gives us a bird’s-eye view of each country on genetic diseases. Some are epidemic and some very rare,” he told the UAE paper The National.

Dr. Anain Yvorra, general director of France’s Eurobiomed, organizer of this year’s Montpellier conference on rare genetic diseases, told Al Arabiya the research done by CAGS would be of great interest to the field of genomic studies.

“The chance of genetic diseases increases with each consanguine marriage between defective gene carriers. A genetic pool with a long history of such marriages would indeed bread very interesting results.”

He noted however that although most of the diseases recognized by CAGS as epidemics in the UAE, Oman and Bahrain, are genetically related, breast cancer could also have many other triggers.

“Breast cancer could be environmental or emotional as well as genetic.”

The center funded by the Sheikh Hamadan Award for medical sciences states on its website that its vision is “to alleviate human suffering from genetic diseases in the Arab World.”

http://www.lilliput-information.com/velg.html (dansk version)

Resultaterne har vist sig. Vær så god at spise.

Michelle Obama Joins Husband… Misrepresents American Health Care System Source: Gateway Pundit

Michelle Obama Joins Husband… Misrepresents American Health Care System
Source: Gateway Pundit

“You lie.”
Michelle Obama joined her husband today and misrepresented American health care system to the nation.
Bloomberg reported:

First lady Michelle Obama sought support for the administration’s health-care plans from family advocacy groups and health-care professionals, saying the treatment of women under the current system is “unacceptable.”

As President Barack Obama campaigns to generate backing from voters for his health-care overhaul proposal, the first lady joined the effort today with a more focused pitch.

Michelle Obama said women are being “crushed by the current structure of our health care” because they often are responsible for taking care of family illnesses, arranging checkups and monitoring follow-up care.

“Women are the ones to do it,” she said to an audience of 140 people, including representatives from groups such as the Women’s Chamber of Commerce and the National Council of Negro Women. “Mothers are the ones that do it. And many women find themselves doing the same thing for their spouses.”

Michelle forgot to mention that women actually have a better survival rate under our current system.
You’d think that might be worth mentioning?

The breast cancer survival rate is much greater here in the United States than in countries with socialized medicine.

In fact, women with breast cancer have a 14 percent higher survival rate in the United States than in Europe. Breast cancer mortality is 52 percent higher in Germany than in the United States, and 88 percent higher in the United Kingdom. Breast cancer mortality is also 9 percent higher in Canada than in the US. Less than 25 percent of U.S. women die from breast cancer. In Britain, it’s 46 percent; France, 35 percent; Germany, 31 percent; Canada, 28 percent; Australia, 28 percent, and New Zealand, 46 percent.

It’s easy to convince a bunch of mindless drones when you leave FACTS out and push bullshit through based on lies and fraudulent statements. Then again, maybe it’s not. That’s the thing about mindless drones. Selfish lazy shitstains with their hands out. Put those hands back in your pockets… You feel anything there? Change? At least BHussein came through on ONE promise, eh? There’s your change. Not go get a job and support your damned selves, you morons. What’s that? Can’t find a job? Stimulus package didn’t create or save a bazillion jobs? No? OMGZ!! GTFO! Anyhoodle, here are some MORE Obama lies. This time coming from the Sasquatch herself… the one… the only… MicHELLe Obama:

First lady Michelle Obama In 1996, she served as the Associate Dean of Student Services at the University of Chicago, where she developed the University’s Community Service Center. In 2002, she began working for the University of Chicago Hospitals, first as executive director for community affairs and, beginning May 2005, as Vice President for Community and External Affairs.

The White House, Democrats, and MoveOn liberals are spreading health care sob stories to sell a government takeover. But theres one health care policy nightmare you wont hear the Obamas hyping. Its a tale of poor, minority patient-dumping in Chicago — with First Lady Michelle Obamas fingerprints all over it.

The First Lady helped create a notorious program that dumped poor patients on community hospitals, yet the national media ignore the story. Imagine if her husband were a Republican. Dangerously close to patient dumping, a practice made illegal by the Emergency Medical Labor and Treatment Act, and reflected an effort to cherry pick wealthy patients over poor.

Mrs. Obama first hatched the UCMC program as the South Side Health Collaborative, which featured a gang of counselors whose job it was to advise low-income patients that they would be better off at other hospitals and clinics. The program was so successful in getting rid of unwanted patients that she expanded it, gave it a new name, and hired none other than David Axelrod to sell the program to the public.

Oddly absent from most of the unflattering press coverage of UCMCs patient-dumping scheme is any mention of the role our new First Lady played in devising the program. A laudable exception has been the Chicago Sun-Times, which reported last August that Michelle Obama — currently on unpaid leave from her $317,000-a-year job as a vice president of the prestigious hospital — helped create the program.

What. The. Fuck.

When are you morons going to WAKE UP?!
