The “Owl” as a Symbol of the Occult has varied and nuanced layers of deconstructions. Aside from the mythological connections of the Owl to Athena and Ishtar, “goddesses” that directly link back to Isis, the Owl also contains observable natural properties that signify an ability to see in the dark (read Setianist ignorant world).  Of course, we cannot exclude a Qaballistic construction to the very word “OWL”.
These podcasts provide a uniquely Isisian Code view of the Owl as a Symbol of the Occult and give a glimpse into the way in which Hermetic Qaballa is used in the construction of words as Occult constructs.

I first read The Illuminatus! Trilogy as a freshman in college, in 1990. 15 years after its initial publication in 1975, it was dated but felt mostly relevant, especially in hippie-saturated Eugene, OR. I had mixed feeling about the book, and always thought I ought to give it another try before selling it back at Powell’s. I finished re-reading it a few weeks ago, almost 20 years later.

Halfway through the second book, I was getting frustrated. The deliberately dense and incoherent style is hard to follow. I wanted to know where it was going (I remembered next to nothing from my previous reading) but I was getting weary of the style and suspicious of the authors. It seemed like there was an undercurrent of libertarian dogma. Libertarianism sounds great in theory, but have you ever met any libertarians? I certainly would not want to live in their war-of-all-against-all world, thank you very much.

Finally I wikipedia’d the book and the authors to get a better sense of their intentions. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Wilson and Shea were playing games more than pushing ideology. It all started when they posited the question, what if every crazy conspiracy theory was actually true? They deal with that question quite successfully, weaving together all sorts of contradictory ideas in a stew of science fiction, history, and politics. I also went ahead and read the story synopsis on Wikipedia. I sort of regretted spoiling the identity of the 5th Illuminati Primi, but knowing which of the myriad threads were most relevant to the central plot made for a more enjoyable read.

35 years after initial publication it is definitely dated. The attitudes toward sex and drugs and equality that were revolutionary in the early 70s are sadly naive today. The meta-stream-of-consciousness style was surely meant to jolt the reader out of sleepy alignment with the dominant paradigm, but it mostly just gets in the way of absorbing the story. I kept thinking, The Invisibles did it better.

Even so, the book got me wrestling with ideas, mostly about the nature of freedom, and that’s nothing to sneeze at.

Also, Illuminatus gets right what almost every other conspiracy story gets wrong. That is, if some secret and powerful cabal is running the world, why should they be bothered about the plucky young journalist/lawyer/single mother/crank who has discovered the truth? What’s the stop them from crushing the little rebel like a bug and burying his/her message in the military-industrial-media complex? Nothing, that’s what. Illuminatus is not the story of one conspiracy ruling the world, but several conspiracies competing for influence. Even better, it becomes less and less clear which side is the good guys and bad guys, or even how many sides their really are.

I guess I’ll hang onto it for another 20 years.

So. The day before yesterday mentioned the Illuminatus! trilogy, and my thought that it really was a shame there wasn’t an audiobook (especially unabridged) version of it.

And then I was proved wrong: Deepleaf Productions had done an unabridged version of the trilogy, and that same version was on sale at Audible.co.uk which seemed approachable, though DRM-infested.

Below’s the chronicle of the next few hours.

• Boggles.
• Picks jaw off the floor.
• Says “Eww”, wipes the jaw with a cloth, considers sweeping the floors, and goes to Audible instead.
• Googles for “Audible DRM”; laughs evilly.
• Becomes 13-and-so pounds lighter; sighs, as this is a matter of money, not weight.
• Shakes fist at Audible; invokes Yog-Sothoth; installs iTunes; installs Audible Download Manager; dies a little inside; clicks “Download”.
• “Estimated download time 1 h 33 min”; the rate, and one’s mood, improve a bit after that.
• Sees iTunes works, and the downloaded file (part 1/2 of Eye in the Pyramid) plays; says “Righty-o!” and downloads the other.
• Downloads something that promises to (legally!) strip away the asinine DRM with no fuss; sees that the program doth indeed do so, but being shareware only with the first 60 seconds of the file. The file being over six and a half hours in length, this does not improve one’s mood. Uninstallation, careful bug-sweeps and further invoking of Yog-Sothoth follow.
• Plunks in a blank CD; mutters to self that “A-ha! We’re in the same old spot again, old chap! And while blank CDs cost a bit, they’re cheap, and they’re nowhere near the price of one’s sanity, which be what DRM cuts into!”
• After six CDs and some maniacal giggling (first half of the Eye in the Pyramid done! Tee-hee!), begins ripping those from the newly made pure-audio CDs into the computer as mp3:s; reconsiders using some more hi-tech solution, but thinks the existence of these CDs as a back-up is… well, idiotic given the possibility of mp3 backups, but an excuse anyway. Most often any excuse, no matter how stupid, will do to shirk away from installing yet another program.
• Besides, by now the awareness intrudes that various podcasters have then and again mentioned something called “reviews on iTunes” and giving them; and now that one’s only real excuse has evaporated, something clearly needs to be done about the matter.
• But, before that, some listening; and tomorrow, a purchase of more blank CDs, and the other volumes of Illuminatus!. (Dang, the exclamation-mark and dots in various names really uglify one’s punctuation.)
• Finally, this thought intrudes: given the narrative eccentricity of the trilogy (and didn’t that sound high and mighty!), and the fact that iTunes decided to burn the book in eight-minute chunks, one could get not altogether unpleasant results by enabling shuffle…

Well, now. The Lord of the Rings, the Watchmen, Spider-Man and even (in an irritatingly deviant a way) Transformers and G.I. Joe have been turned into movies, and A Song of Ice and Fire is turning, it seems, into a TV mini-series. This (and a host of other Marvel projects) means most of my favorites of that sort from childhood and youth have been made into movies; even things like the Lord of the Rings and the Watchmen that I’d always thought utterly unfilmable (and in those cases, the results were the best!).

Well, all, with one significant gap.

Now, only the Illuminatus! trilogy remains. (Peter Jackson, do you have anything on the horizon?)

It all began with the creation of the techno-elites those that had nanotech life extension, genetic engineering and Artificial intelligence at there finger tips. Before long all of society began to look like a computer program to them. Market manipulation reached a level of complete predictability and experiments of control through the use of artificial intelligence were fully funded. Soon after, since they viewed society as a computer program, it was their duty to become the programmers. Quietly they worked in shadows, never was the public allowed to know the advancement that researchers were making in the fields of nanotech and artificial intelligence.

Then on the 11th hour the sum of all fears became a reality the techno elites created an air born nano weapon. A weapon so evil it was not created to inflict harm. No one even felt the nanos enter their body, and once all the continents were spread with the new weapon a new control grid was created.

What you never saw was how the nanos were effectively designed to enter the body and attach themselves to key centers of the neo-cortex.. This gave the techno-elites full access to your thoughts and actions including world leaders. They now effectively ruled over the entire planet. Yes, the world population had now been compromised with a mind control weapon. The techno-elites successfully turned themselves into what everyone thought was never going to be real. The techno-illuminati.

I’m not here to warn you about such things, no.. Im afraid the nanos have already taken me over.

Regular readers of Soul Drift will know that Illuminatus were one of the local bands I took a shine to when I was at University. I think they are a fantastic live band, but I’d not heard any (good quality) studio versions of songs until now. Recently I have been loving Spotify, and I think it is great that the band have put their brand new EP on it to stream.

The EP has to be one of the most beautiful pieces I have heard in a long time, and I love the way that the artwork compliments the music perfectly (check out their MySpace to see the full piece). All three of the main songs are atmospheric and epic, which evoke strong emotions on every listen. You get your money’s worth as well, since all four tracks are over five minutes long. My favourite on the EP is without a doubt the title track. That’s not to say the others aren’t brilliant, but ‘The Rising Tide’ captured my heart when I first heard it live. The intro and the soundscapes throughout, accompanied by Julio Taylor’s harrowing screams, never fails to give me goosebumps. It is an incredibly powerful track and I believe it is the band’s masterpiece.

The EP ends with an amazing acoustic version of ‘Wargasm’, which first appeared on their Aborted Revolutions EP in 2005 (which is also available to hear on Spotify). It has a certain Spanish feel to it and really shows off Julio Taylor’s vocal talents.

Overall the EP is beautiful and brutal, thought-provoking and meaningful. I highly recommend it! As I mentioned above, you can stream the EP on Spotify but you can purchase it on iTunes and other digital download sites, or you can buy the limited edition CD version from the band’s official webstore.

PAPIEŻ HILDE: Rozumiem, że znałeś Grega Hilla, Kerry’ego Thornleya, Roberta Antona Wilsona, Timothy’ego Leary’ego, Kena Keseya i byłeś jednym z pierwszych Dyskordian?

RICHARD MARSHALL: Właściwie nigdy tak naprawdę nie byłem Dyskordianinem, po prostu się z nimi zadawałem. Lubiłem książki Kesey’a i Leary’ego, choć nigdy nie zażyłem kwasu. Powiedziałbyś, że należałem do ruchu Erystycznego, ale nie byłem Eryzyjczykiem.

Wierzę natomiast w przekaz Jezusa “kochaj swego bliźniego jak siebie samego” i sprzeciw władzy.

HILDE: Czy “Dziwak Jezusa” nie oznacza chrześcijańskiego fundamentalizmu?

MARSHALL: Nie! W tamtych czasach nie oznaczało – to inne pokolenie niż wasze. Dla nas, Jezus był radykałem, rebeliantem przeciwko władzy. Byliśmy za miłością, pokojem i naturą. Nadal hoduję własne warzywa i nadal jestem Fanatykiem Jezusa.

HILDE: Jest taka grupa jak “Chrześcijańscy Dyskordianie”.

MARSHALL: Zapewne rozumieją słowa Jezusa. Fundamentaliści nie bardzo.

HILDE: Wiele osób, które znałeś było zwolennikami używania substancji psychoaktywnych, jak marihuana i LSD. Powiedziałeś, że nigdy nie próbowałeś kwasu. Próbowałeś czegoś innego? Nawet Chrześcijnie żyjący w latach 60 brali dużo.

MARSHALL: Miałeś nie pytać o osobiste sprawy. Myślę, że to teraz bez znaczenia. Ostatnich trzech prezydentów Stanów Zjednoczonych przyznało się do palenia zielska. Nie sposób było trzymać się z tamtą ekipą i nie brać zupełnie niczego. Chyba że jesteś Frankiem Zappa. Nigdy nie spróbowałem kwasu, gdyż został stworzony przez człowieka. Biblia głosi, że Bóg dał nam wszystkie rośliny, z których możemy dowoli korzystać. Próbowałem grzybków, peyotlu i zielska.

HILDE: Czy chciałbyś podzielić się jakimiś doświadczeniami na ten temat?

MARSHALL: Nie. Lecz nigdy nie miałem z narkotykami problemów: żadnych uzależnień, żadnych bad tripów. Nigdy nie próbowałem opium i chyba żałuję.

HILDE: Wróćmy do powstania Dyskordii. Trudno powiedzieć, jak to wszystko powstało. Czasami nawet trudno powiedzieć, kto jest postacią prawdziwą, a kto fikcujną. Grypsie Skripto, Onrak, Karzeł…

MARSHALL: Nie znałem Grypsie i Onraka. Onrak był prawdziwy – żył w Wyoming czy Kolorado, ale nigdy go nie poznałem. Grypsie mogła być Louise Lacey, lubiła cygańskie (ang. gypsy) klimaty. Karzeł był prawdziwy. Po prostu nie był prawdziwym karłem.

HILDE: Robert Anton Wilson wiele razy powtarzał, że Karzeł był postacią prawdziwą, ale przecież znany był z mieszania faktów i fikcji.

MARSHALL: Karzeł nie był prawdziwym karłem, to całe kłamstwo. Karłem był chłopiec imieniem Quinn. Być może Art Quinn. Nie, Mike Quinn. Miał 10 czy 12 lat, gdy pierwszy raz go spotkałem w latach 60. Uciekł z domu, chciał być być hippisem – ale z forsą, ale także rewolucjonistą, członkiem Czarnych Panter, rastafarianinem i prezydentem. Kimkolwiek by był, chciał być bogaty. Mały, chciwy geniusz.

HILDE: Gdzie powstał Dyskordianizm? Czy rzeczywiście było to Whittier w południowej Kalifornii?

MARSHALL: To było w Zatoce San Francisco (Bay Area), w północnej Kalifornii.

HILDE: Hill i Thornley zawsze powtarzali, że wszystko zaczęło się w kręgielni we Whittier.

MARSHALL: Obaj bardzo dużo kłamali.

HILDE: Dlaczego utożsamiasz Quinna z Karłem, chociaż nie był karłem?

MARSHALL: Był niskim chłopcem. Nie niskim jako chłopiec, ale niższym od nas. Na początku nazywaliśmy go “Dzieciak”, ale Quinn tego nienawidził. W zemście zaczął nazywać Wilsona “Bobby”, czym Wilson się nie przejmował. Mnie natomiast nazywał “Richie”, co mnie bardzo denerwowało. Wtedy zaczeliśmy go nazywać Karzeł. Był geniuszem, jednym z tych cudownych dzieci. Grał w szachy jak Bobby Fischer, w pokera jak Maverick (amerykańscy mistrzowie tamtych czasów – dop. tłum.). Sam siebie nazywał “Mistrzem Gry”. Miał też talent do bycia tam, gdzie się coś dzieje – uciekł do San Francisco w 1967 i brał udział w narodzinach Dzieci Kwiatów i Summer of Love (ważna rewolucja hippisowska w 1967 roku – dop. tłum.). Następnie w 1969 roku uciekł na Woodstock. Można zrozumieć, czemu ciągle uciekał. Miał trudną sytuację w domu w Los Angeles – jego rodzina była biedna, był kolorowy, czarny – co nie było właściwie takie złe w tamtych czasach, bo mógł chodzić do szkoły z białymi dziećmi – Kalifornia była wtedy dosyć tolerancyjna – lecz miał zespół Klinefeltera. Czuł się jak dziwak.

HILDE: Na czym polega ten zespół?

MARSHALL: Mężczyźni posiadają chromosomy XY, kobiety XX. On miał XXY. Podobnie jak Tula.

HILDE: Tula?

MARSHALL: Dziewczyna Jamesa Bonda.

HILDE: Ach tak. Transseksualista z Playboya. Czy wiedziałeś, że Shea i Wilson pisali razem do Playboya?

MARSHALL: Rzecz jasna znałem Wilsona, ale Sheę tylko trochę. Niestety nigdy nie dane mi było bliżej go poznać.

HILDE: Ale znałeś za to Grega Hilla i Kerry’ego Thornley’a.

MARSHALL: Byli bardzo różni. Zawsze zastanawiałem się jak się zaprzyjaźnili. Hill miał nastawienie filozoficzne, czasami komiczne. Dyskordia była dla niego odchyłem – czymś, o czym można porozmawiać, ale nigdy według niej żyć. Był większym praktykiem z tych dwóch. Jego największą zbrodnią była kradzież pieczątek. Później zaczął zajmować się programowaniem komputerowym. Pracował dla banku.

HILDE: Rozumiem, że to był to Bank of America?

MARSHALL: Hill ciągle coś zmieniał. Nie płacz gdy budynek ci nie odpowiada. Zakradnij się do środka i go przebuduj. Był praktykiem.

HILDE: A Thornley? Niektórzy nazywają go oświeconym szaleńcem.

MARSHALL: Thornley był geniuszem. Nie dosłownie takim jak Quinn, ale był bystry. Hill także, lecz Hill trzymał się bardziej “pomyśl zanim skoczysz”, a Thornley “kto się waha ten przegrywa”. Także nie stał pod budynkiem płacząc. Nasikałby na mur i posadził marihuanę. Właściwie raz byłem tego świadkiem, tylko pierw sadził, a potem sikał. Thornley był jak Jim Morrison, niepoprawny poeta, który mógłby spróbować wszystkiego. Byłem zaskoczony, że udało mu się żyć przy tym tak długo. Zawsze martwiłem się, że skończy jak Morrison, umrze w toalecie.

Pamiętam, jak usłyszeliśmy, że Morrison brał wszystkie narkotyki, jakie wpadły mu do rąk, ktokolwiek by mu je dał. Thornley zdecydował, że będzie robił identycznie. Zapytał mnie czy mam jakiś towar. Dałem mu aspirynę. [Śmiech].

HILDE: Czy wniosłeś coś do Principii?

MARSHALL: Do czego?

HILDE: Principia Discordia.

MARSHALL: Tak. Nie. Chyba nie. Być może jestem gdzieś zacytowany. Nie pamiętam.

HILDE: Jakie było twoje święte, Dyskordiańskie imię?

MARSHALL: Zdaje mi się, że nigdy takiego nie posiadałem. Nie pamiętam.

HILDE: Albo i tak.

MARSHALL: To jest właśnie problem Operacji Obciągania Mózgu: jeśli robisz to dobrze, rozpierdalasz swój własny mózg. Wybacz za moją łacinę.

HILDE: Proszę powiedz więcej o Operacji Obciągania Mózgu.

HILDE: Wiele było nawiązań do Mao Tse-tunga w Principii Discordii, ale większość była generalnie negatywna.

MARSHALL: Nie do końca. Błyskotliwy umysł, mistrz taktyki. Dyskordianie pożyczyli ideę Mao pod formą “Dyskordianie nie mogą trzymać się razem”. To partyzancka sztuka wojenna – Mao wykorzystywał ją olśniewająco. To używanie komórek lub koterii, gdzie każda komórka to kilka osób działających razem, niezależnie od innych. Jeśli policja lub wojsko uchwyci jedną komórkę, nikt nie może sypnąć, bo nikt nie wie czym zajmują się inni, gdzie są, a nawet kim są. Zatrzymanie jednej komórki nie wpływa na inne, ponieważ wszyscy działają niezależnie. To jest właśnie powód, dla którego Mao używał komórek i my ich używamy. Sekretne koterie, święte imiona, fakty, mity, prawdy, kłamstwa zjednoczone razem, anonimowość. Tak oto Mao wygrał w Chinach.

To z teorii gier. Wiesz co to teoria gier?

HILDE: Słyszałem o niej.

MARSHALL: Poczytaj o niej. Wszystko w życiu jest jak w grze. Wykorzystujemy to. Wilson mówił, że jedyną nieprzewidywalną strategią jest losowa strategia. To rzucanie kością. Odwrócone I Ching, nie porządek w chaosie, ale chaos w porządku. Nikt nie wie co się dzieje, nawet z nim samym. Tym sposobem Agenci Szarych Twarszy – ludzie, gliny, rząd – nie mogą cię pokonać. To sposób na wszystko – wojnę, protest, obciąganie mózgu.

Prowadzi to do takich dni jak Woodstock. Jeśli coś pamiętasz, nie było cię tam.

HILDE: Gdzie byłeś podczas koncertu Woodstock w 1969?

MARSHALL: Nie pamiętam.

HILDE: Słyszałeś o OMGASM?

MARSHALL: Co to takiego? Seks tantryczny?

HILDE: Nie. To wariacja Operacji Obciagania Mózgu: Misja Nasiona Złotego Jabłka. Jest to idea względnie młoda. Polega na dzieleniu się sposobami z innymi koteriami, rozpowszechnianiu obciągania mózgu, jak nasion złotego jabłka.

MARSHALL: Wspamiała Operacja Obciągania wciąż nabiera na sile. Idea nie jest nowa, sami ją wymyśliliśmy. Nigdy nie myślałem, że Dyskordia nadal się rozwija. Aż do teraz.

HILDE: Wilson i Shea przypisywali wymyślenie Operacji Obciągania Mózgu Markoffowi Chaney’owi.

MARSHALL: Komu?

HILDE: Markoff Chaney, Karzeł, Święty Patron Operacji Obciągania Mózgu.

MARSHALL: Zawsze operowali w zakręcony sposób żartami. Nigdy jednak nie słyszałem, by go tak nazywali. Nazywał się Quinn.

HILDE: Był tak nazywany w Trylogii Illuminatus.

MARSHALL: Mineło wiele czasu, od kiedy ostatni raz to przeczytałem. Tak, Chaney, Karzeł. Musisz znać Voegelina (Eric Voegelin filozof polityki, którego filozofia jest częścią trylogii), by rozumieć książkę. Na prawdę był to Chaney? Nie przypadkiem Crane?

HILDE: To Hagbard Celine, Nemo-podobny kapitan złotej łodzi podwodnej Leif Ericsson, był znany jako Howard Crane w innej książce Wilsona.

MARSHALL: Tak. To był właśnie Karzeł.

HILDE: Ale w książce…

MARSHALL: Już pamiętam. Karzeł i kapitan to ten sam charakter. To był żart Wilsona. Rzut kością, różne ścieżki, coś w tym stylu. Ponownie teoria gier. Wykorzystaj swój figlostatek, robiąc małe żarty, jak świr Chaney, lub bądź jak Crane, bogaty, by pozwolić sobie na wielkie żarty, by zmienić cały świat – w żółtej łodzi podwodnej.

MARSHALL: I Chaney i Crane zawiedli w zmienianiu świata – Voegelin. On głosił, że nie da się stworzyć nieba na Ziemi. Znasz kawał z Fernando Poo? Minęły lata.

HILDE: Proszę, opowiedz mi o nim.

MARSHALL: Myślę, że się do niego przyczyniłem. Fernando Poo to stara nazwa prawdziwej wyspy nieopodal Afryki. Nie stworzyli jej – to ja znalazłem nazwę – a oni wprowadzili tam wojnę. MARSHALL: Teraz to oczywiste, ale wtedy nikt oprócz nas tak nie myślał. To jedyna rzecz, jaką zrobiłem dla Principii Discordii, bo tam ten żart także występuje. Fernando Poo, prawdziwa wyspa, była także nazywana “pięknym kwiatem”. Użyli tego w Summa Universalia – Principia Discordia, lecz nie pamiętam cytatu.

HILDE: “Gówno sprawia, że kwiatki rosną i to jest piękne.”

MARSHALL: Dokładnie! Zapamiętałeś. To ten sam żart, który występuje w Trylogii. Gówno i kwiatki.

HILDE: Święte Chao.

MARSHALL: W pewien sposób tak.

HILDE: Spotykałeś w swoim życiu jakieś Dyskordiańskie synchroniczności?

MARSHALL: To jak z liczbą pięć. Widzisz ją, jeśli jej szukasz.

HILDE: Zanim prezydent John F. Kennedy został zamordowany, Thornley powiedział, że chciałby jego śmierci. Ponadto był przyjacielem Lee Harveya Oswalda, który został oskarżony za zabicie Kennedy’ego.

I have to credit this book, along with a vast and lengthy period of self medication, for transforming me from a violent teenage sociopath into the caring and enlightened individual I am today.

Support: illuminatus & Sworn Amongst

Unfortunately I only caught the end of Sworn Amongst’s performance & didn’t see enough to judge how good they were. Progressive metal band, illuminatus, followed and played a strong set, the highlight being ‘The Rising Tide’. The only negative thing I could say about it was that the vocals could have been turned up more; it was often really difficult to hear Julio over the music! Overall, it was still a really good show & the band seemed to have really enjoyed the ten-day tour.

I was quite looking forward to seeing the next act, Susperia, but I was a bit disappointed by them. I guess the music just wasn’t to my taste, which is a shame because they seemed like really great guys. They definitely kept the crowd entertained with their banter & jokes, & the crowd also livened up when they played their cover of ‘Wild Child’ (originally by W.A.S.P.). They had a lot of enthusiasm & put in a lot of effort, which I could say was true of all the bands on the night. Impressive since they had been playing non-stop for ten days! I also think Bernt Fjellestad from Guardians Of Time did a really great job filling in for Susperia’s vocalist, Athera, who recently had heart surgery.

After a long wait, we finally got to see the band we were waiting for. The venue was packed & raring to go. Breed77 bound straight into ‘La Ultima Hora’ which immediately sent the crowd into a frenzy. Most of the tracks from their set were from their upcoming album Insects (due September 2009) & I really liked the sound of ‘Wake Up’ & ‘Revolution’ (particularly liked Paul Isola’s speech before that song about the state of this country at the moment!). From the older albums they played (from what I remember): ‘Worlds on Fire’, ‘Petroleo (You Will Be King)’, ‘Remember That Day’, ‘Blind’ & ‘Floods’. They ended the night – & the tour – on a real high by getting all of the support bands on the stage first to do a rendition of ‘We Will Rock You’ & then their cover of The Cranberries’ ‘Zombie’ which was immense & had the whole room jumping around like maniacs! Breed77 are an amazing live band & I can’t get over how great Paul Isola’s voice is!

Ich nehme mal an, dass dem einen oder anderen hier der Name Robert Anton Wilson nicht ganz ungeläufig ist und seine Werke auch nicht (ich habe übrigens den ersten Band der Illuminaten-Trilogie seinerzeit von Moritz R® erhalten, dessen sehr schöne Werke hier zu bewundern sind).

Und wer jetzt nicht verwundert den Kopf schüttelt (oder vielleicht gerade diejenigen, die genau das tun), wird sich sicherlich auch darüber freuen, dass es auch nach dem irdischen Abgang von Wilson (obwohl: stimmt das?) eine neue Site zu seinem Schaffen gibt.

Wo man dann erfährt, was es mit der Immanentisierung des Eschatons so auf sich hat und ob man dafür sein soll oder dagegen oder beides.

Und das Schöne daran: Jeder Versuch, es z.B. unserem Wirtschaftsminister oder der Familienministerin zu erklären, dürfte sie in so heftige Verwirrung versetzen, wie es sonst nur der Kontakt mit dem Internet schafft.

Oder der mit LSD. Aber das nehmen die beiden bestimmt nicht. Höchstens mal rauchen, aber nicht inhalieren. [dieter]

Szyfr Zwacka pojawia się zarówno w Principii Discordii, jak i Trylogii Illuminatus!, a także w niektórych książkach Roberta Antona Wilsona (jak na przykład Kosmiczny Spust), zdobiąc ilustracje. Podobno poniższe szyfry zostały odkryte w domu adwokata Hansa Zwacka podczas rewizji w 1785 roku na zlecenie rządu bawarskiego. Rzecz jasna, szyfr ten nie jest zbyt trudny do złamania przy możliwościach dzisiejszej matematyki i informatyki. Lecz o ile komuś udało się go złamać, o tyle tylko Illuminaci byli w stanie odczytać ukryty pod nim kod i wiedzieli czym był np. “Wczesny Masz”. Podobno jak dziś Dyskordianie wiedzą o co chodzi z gwizdaniem podczas sikania…

Today has been good for exciting news in music (for me at least!). First, stoner rock band Fu Manchu have announced that they are in the process of writing a new album & will most likely be hitting the recording studio in April or May. They said they have about ten songs already & want to write a few more; apparently it’s sounding “heavy & fuzzy”. If it’s anything like their last album, We Must Obey, I’ll be happy! They think the album will be out in September or October & it will be released through Century Media Records. I can’t wait! You can read the blog for more information about the album, their 20th anniversary & a possible DVD!

Second, Nottingham-based metal band illuminatus have announced a UK tour supporting Breed 77 & Susperia. I cannot wait for this! The band did a one-off acoustic show with Breed 77 in April that I had tickets for… I saw the first support band & illuminatus but sadly had to miss Breed 77 because I was feeling unwell. I’m so glad I have another chance! This tour (which starts on 18th May at the Bideford Palladium) is not to be missed! Click here for more tourdates.

Finally, black metal/shoegaze band Amesoeurs have announced that their album will be released in either March or April. This is great news, as I had heard they had broken up. Their first EP Ruines Humaines is amazing & one of my favourite CDs, so I’m hoping a full-length will not disappoint! Robert Anton Wilson is arguably one of the most important and influential writers of our times. His opus of work ranges from Science Fiction and Historical Fiction to erudite and witty commentaries on psychology, conspiracies, the paranormal and quantum physics. Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1932, Wilson early on took an interest in techniques of mind expansion. This led him to explore the General Semantics of Alfred Korzybski, (Wilhelm) Reichian therapy, and eventually marijuana, LSD, and the "Magick" of Aleister Crowley.

Wilson is perhaps most famous for the SF trilogy Illuminatus! (1975), which he co-authored with Robert Shea, and which won the Prometheus Award as a "Classic" of SF in 1986. A subsequent SF trilogy, Schroedinger’s Cat (1979), was hailed by New Scientist magazine as "the most scientific of all science fiction novels". Of his non-fiction work, Wilson’s Prometheus Rising (1983) outlined a workable road map for mind expansion, Quantum Psychology (1990) brought psychology into line with quantum physics, while the autobiographical Cosmic Trigger trilogy (1977-1995) offered Wilson’s thoughts on the "universe and everything".

Wilson’s book, Everything Is Under Control: Conspiracies, Cults and Cover-ups (1998), co-compiled with Miriam Joan Hill, is an extensive A-Z of conspiracy theories. So I took the opportunity to ask him which of the many conspiracies floating around at present he considers to be the most plausible?

RAW: I find great plausibility in a combination of Buckminster Fuller and Ezra Pound, minus Pound’s anti-Semitism. I agree mostly with Pound’s judgment that banks currently have more power than governments; I do not think the banks all have Jewish owners or serve some "Jewish plot." I also accept Fuller’s verdict that governments consist of "sponsored entities" – sponsored by the billionaires and occasional millionaires who support the politicians’ election campaigns (one hundred million for a Senate race, 3 or 4 hundred million for president). I also agree with Fuller that although banks make up most of this elite they have some degree of co-operation and some degree of rivalry with other "hidden rulers," chiefly the Mafia, the atomic energy cartels and Big Oil. Fuller calls this confederation MMAO (Machievelli, Mafia, Atoms & Oil) and I think that sums it up as well as any label can.

LORD E: In both your fiction and non-fiction, the idea of the Illuminati serves as a metaphor for individuals who have achieved a high-level of mind expansion. But, in reality, did the Illuminati continue much beyond Adam Weishaupt in the 18th century?

RAW: I don’t claim to know anything about this, but I do have opinions, based on 30 years of amusing, confusing and often frustrating and puzzling research. In my opinion, the occult/mind-expansion side of the Illuminati survived through various "Masonic" lodges, especially the Order of Memphis and Mizraim, and still survives via the Ordo Templi Orientis and, perhaps, a few other lodges. The political side of the Illuminati survives in our Bill of Rights, as far as some bleeding remnants of the Bill of Rights have survived, i.e. alive (barely) but severely disabled.

LORD E: What is your view of the Freemasons?

RAW: Basically, I have a favorable view of Freemasonry. I think we owe our Bill of Rights to Masonic influence, for instance. I also think that in some cases Masonic lodges have served political ends, sometimes benign and sometimes quite malign. Just remember that the list of known Freemasons includes Mozart, Ben Franklin, J Edgar Hoover, Voltaire, FDR, Ronald Reagan and the Italian bank owners of the P2 lodge of Grand Orient Freemasonry who laundered drug money for the Mafia and CIA in the 1970s. I think Freemasonry does not possess fungibility or homogeneity. It depends on what lodge, what country and what decade you look at.

LORD E: During the early 1970s you practiced Aleister Crowley’s system of Magick, which you found to be a very effective method of mind expansion. Do you think the magickal system outlined by Crowley is relevant to today’s world – or are there faster, more effective systems around now?

RAW: I don’t think one system works for everybody. I have found great value in LSD, Crowley, Reichian body work, NLP, brainwave machines, some Sufi and yoga exercises, general semantics etc. Other people will find some of these irksome or stressful. Everybody has to find their own path. Some seem to have found value even in psychoanalysis, but I don’t know why. Some even follow Scientology, which puzzles me even more. Different scenes for different genes, different lanes for different brains.

LORD E: Could you outline what you consider to be the essential ingredients of any mind expansion program?

RAW: I would want emphasis on technique (or techniques) and serious practice of same. I want no dogma and no guru. A Perfect Master seems suitable only for those who desire to become Perfect Slaves.

LORD E: In your opinion, do we have a spirit or a soul?

RAW: Those terms carry connotations that seem footless to me. I do suspect that we have a local mind, here and now, and a non-local mind, everywhere and everywhen, like the non-local software in David Bohm’s version of quantum theory. Zen calls them Little Mind and Big Mind. Once you contact Big Mind, even briefly, most of "metaphysics" and most of "materialism" seem rather unreal and beside the point.

LORD E: Outlined in Cosmic Trigger One is how, during the early 1970s, you entertained the notion that you had some contact with an ET from Sirius, which was in some way connected with your higher self – what are your views on this now?

RAW: I think I might have contacted the Sirius sector of non-local mind, or maybe I just needed that metaphor because otherwise I’d have no idea at all about what had happened. As the Sufis say, when a blind man who has never touched water falls into the ocean, he knows something unthinkable has happened, but he doesn’t yet know what to call it.

LORD E: What is your view on aliens – are they flesh and blood ETs?

RAW: I don’t claim to know, but I incline toward the view of one deep or non-local mind appearing in various forms, as edited by the belief system (b.s.) of the observer.

LORD E: In the light of your experiences with Magick and hallucinogens, what is your view on the literal reality of spirits – be they goetic demons, poltergeists, shamanic allies, Crowley’s "Aiwass", or whatever?

RAW: I don’t take "spirits" literally, but then I don’t take anything literally. All of our perceptions derive from sub-conscious editing and orchestration of the billions of signals we receive from Universe every second. We edit and orchestrate the signals to fit our current reality-tunnel. General ideas and scientific, religious or philosophical theories based on such selective perception become even more neatly tailored to our reality tunnel, or our current b.s. (belief system). I regard "spirits," pookahs, angels and UFOnauts the same way I regard the rest of humanity’s mental furniture. If it stays in somebody’s mental library long enough, it serves some function for them. It may not serve any function for me.

LORD E: What aspects of the various quantum theories do you most agree with and why? And which ones do you disagree with?

RAW: To make explicit what has lurked implicitly in all my answers, I have much agreement for the "model agnosticism" created mostly by Niels Bohr. A similar model agnosticism appears in the general semantics of Korzybski and the ethno-methodology of Garfinkle. According to this viewpoint, we should never believe in our models or maps of Universe the way most people believe in their religion or ideology.

I have often described belief as the death of intellect. I prefer to use a model only and always where it appears to work for me, and to use other models in other areas, and to abandon any and all models if and when a better model comes along. In one of my polemical works, The New Inquisition, I call belief in any model "idolatry" and "modeltheism." I still stand behind that.

After strong doses of model agnosticism, I find great merit in the non-local theories that have emerged from Bell’s Theorem, especially in the works of such physicists as Wolfe, Walker, Bohm and Herbert. A popular version we owe to Douglas Adams states it generally as: "All things are interconnected but some things are more interconnected than others." This non-locality idea not only seems to make more sense of quantum weirdities than other models do, but it also explains some of my psychedelic and Magick experiences better than any other model.

I also strongly support the Von Neumann/Finklestein idea of a three-valued "quantum logic" (true, false, maybe) in preference to Aristotelian true/false logic; but I go beyond physics in giving even more weight to Korzybski’s infinite-valued logic, a scale of probabilities running from 0 to 10 with as many spaces in between as fits the data, e.g., "Probability of 7.03 plus or minus 0.05". I don’t totally reject any quantum model, although some seem pretty weird to me – e.g. the idea that the universe "is" "not" there when nobody looks.

LORD E: When the ideas of quantum physics are eventually assimilated into everyday culture, how do you think they will effect the man or woman in the street?

RAW: I think that when the ideas of model agnosticism, the Uncertainty Principle, fuzzy logics, etc, become generally known it will cause a social revolution bigger and more global than the Renaissance or the Age of Enlightenment. I have no prediction of how soon this will occur… If I judged by the people I meet on my lecture tours, I’d say it has already happened. But if I judged by that statistical sample I’d assume marijuana legalization would have happened already, too, none of our recent wars would have occurred, and televangelists couldn’t get any audience except on the Comedy Channel.

Sadly Robert Anton Wilson passed away on January 11, 2007. On January 6, he wrote on his blog that according to several medical authorities, he was likely to have only between two days and two months left to live. He closed his message by saying: "I look forward without dogmatic optimism but without dread. I love you all and I deeply implore you to keep the lasagna flying. Please pardon my levity, I don’t see how to take death seriously. It seems absurd."

Zurück in meine Jugendzeit: Ungefähr im zarten Alter von 14 Jahren beschäftigte mich eine Roman-Trilogie ausserordentlich, die mich bis heute noch nicht richtig losgelassen hat; es handelte sich um “Illuminatus!“, ein zwischen 1969 – 1971 verfasstes Mammutwerk der beiden US-Autoren Robert Anton Wilson und Robert Shea, die zu dieser Zeit in der Redaktion des amerikanischen Playboy beschäftigt waren.

“Illuminatus” zu beschreiben, ist fast unmöglich: Um den mysteriösen Geheimbund der Illuminaten herum gestrickt entwickelt sich eine abenteuerliche Reise durch sämtliche Verschwörungstheorien die es jemals gegeben hat; es geht weiters um Okkultismus, Sex, Drogen, Zen, Numerologie, das I Ging, den Cthulhu-Mythos, die Kabbala, den Diskordianismus, Ideen der damaligen Hippie-Bewegung und um vieles Gehirnverdrehendes mehr. Timothy Leary und William Burroughs standen Pate, ebenso wie Thomas Pynchon (“Die Enden der Parabel“), William Faulkner und James Joyce.

Die Trilogie avanvierte zum Klassiker der Underground- Pop-Literatur und zog vielerlei Nachfolgewerke von Wilson/Shea nach sich; darunter Obskures (“Die Illuminati-Papiere“), Verzichtenswertes (“Die Illuminati-Chroniken“) aber auch absolut Essentielles (“Cosmic Trigger 1- 3“, sowas wie der philosophische Unterbau Wilsons zu “Illuminatus!“, dazu ein anderes mal mehr). Robert Anton Wilson wurde letztendlich zum “lächelnden Weisen” der amerikanischen Gegenkultur und starb hochverehrt im Jahr 2007.

Man kann die annähernd 1000 Seiten von “Illuminatus!” (bzw. dessen drei Teile “Das Auge in der Pyramide“, “Der goldene Apfel” und “Leviathan“) als Satire lesen, muß aber nicht. Für euren Docteur waren diese Bücher nichts weniger als der jungfräuliche Einstieg in die wunderbar verschrobene Parallelwelt von Verschwörungen; die damals begonnene Liebe zu obskuren Theorien am “Rand der Wirklichkeit” hat wohl auch im Endeffekt zu dem Blog geführt, das ihr hier gerade lest.

Karl Koch

Im trüben Hannover der frühen 1980er-Jahre lebte ein junger Mann, der “Illuminatus!” todernst nahm. Sein Name war Karl Koch, und er sollte als “KGB-Hacker” kurzzeitige Berühmtheit erlangen. Der 1965 geborene Koch durchlebte eine schwierige Kindheit, hatte bereits in seiner Jugend mit “weichen Drogen” zu tun und mit psychischen Problemen zu kämpfen. Der frühe Tod seines Vaters stattete ihn mit einer kleinen Erbschaft aus, mit welcher der Computerenthusiast sich einen Atari ST zulegte. Bevorzugter Lesestoff neben der Illuminatus!-Trilogie war damals das 1984 veröffentlichte “Handbuch für Hacker” und so wuchs beides zusammen: Koch nahm als Pseudonym den Namen des “Illuminatus!“-Helden Hagbard Celine an und begann in Rechnersysteme einzubrechen; bereits ein Jahr später hackte er einen Großrechner des Fermilab in Chicago.

Aus dem Spiel um die Hackerehre wurde eine Mission: Ausgelöst durch Kokainkonsum und Schlafentzug durch nächtelange Hackersessions zusammen mit den schon existierenden psychischen Defekten driftete Koch in eine Scheinwelt, die ihn glauben liess, er müsse wie sein Held Hagbard Celine einen Atomkrieg verhindern, für dessen Kommen er Beweise gefunden zu haben glaubte. Die Möglichkeit, daß er wirklich auf brisante Beweisstücke dafür gestossen sein könnte, sollte man dennoch nicht ganz auschliessen- immerhin war er in amerikanische Militärsysteme und Rechner der NASA eingebrochen.

Koch als "Show-Hacker" auf der CeBIT

Ein unglückseliger Schachzug war seine Entscheidung, geklaute Daten an damalige Sowjet-Kontakte zu verkaufen: Koch und seine Kollegen wurden von dem amerikanischen Computerspezialisten Clifford Stoll enttarnt (der darüber übrigens auch ein spannendes Buch namens “Das Kuckucksei” geschrieben hat), wurde vom Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz beschattet und verhört. Mißbrauch von Speed und LSD führten zu mehreren Aufenthalten in der Psychiatrie und zu Selbstmordversuchen. Freunde von ihm lösten seine Wohnung auf, er versuchte in einem Wohnheim für junge Männer wieder auf die Füsse zu kommen – vergeblich.

Ausgebrannt und psychotisch: Koch am Ende seines Lebens

Karl Koch verschwand am 23.5.1989; seine bis zur Unkenntlichkeit verbrannte Leiche wurde ein eine Woche später in einem Wald bei Gifhorn gefunden, er wurde 23 Jahre alt. Als Verehrer der Illuminatus!- Trilogie (die er unzählige Male gelesen haben muß), hatte die Zahl 23 für ihn natürlich große Bedeutung- da liegt es nahe, daß er (vielleicht als Folge eines psychotischen Schubs) den Todeszeitpunkt nach numerologischen Gesichtspunkten gewählt hatte. Die Umstände seines Todes (angeblich durch Selbstverbrennung) sind allerdings bis heute rätselhaft geblieben: am Tatort wurden keine Schuhe gefunden, der Wald war durch den Brand nicht in Mitleidenschaft gezogen- und immerhin war Koch zu der Zeit Kronzeuge des Verfassungsschutzes; er hat das Geheimnis um seinen Tod allerdings mit ins Grab genommen.

Boris F. aka "Tron"

Ob der 1972 in Berlin geborene Boris F. an die Existenz der Iluminaten glaubte, ist nicht bekannt; zumindest war er aber wie Karl Koch ein Mitglied der deutschen Hackervereinigung “Chaos Computer Club“, und davon abgesehen ein ebenso frühvollendetes Genie. Im Rahmen seiner Diplomarbeit an der technischen Uni Berlin erfand der unter dem Pseudonym Tron als Hacker arbeitende F. 1997 ein sogenanntes “Cryptophon“, ein ISDN-Telefon mit eingebauter Verschlüsselung. Später baute der begeisterte Bastler einen Emulationschip zur Überwindung des damals vom Pay-TV eingesetzten Entschlüsselungssystems Nagravision/Syster und entwickelte Simulationen zur kostenlosen Benutzung von Wertkartentelefonen, die sich noch dazu nach dem Abtelefonieren von selbst wieder aufluden. Sein Meisterstück aber war der Angriff auf den damals noch relativ neuen GSM-Standard; auch hier brachte F. es fertig, eine erfolgreiche Kartensimulation herzustellen, was bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt nicht mal Wissenschaftlern in den USA geglückt war.

1997: Tron im Kreise von Bewunderern

Der 26-jährige verschwand am 17. Oktober des Jahres 1998; er war am Abend aus der elterlichen Wohnung zu einem Spaziergang aufgebrochen und nicht mehr zurückgekehrt. Fünf Tage später fand man seine Leiche: mit einem Gürtel an einem Baum in einem Neuköllner Park erhängt. Die bis heute unaufgeklärten Todesumstände sind unglaublich rätselhaft: die Obduktion ergab, das F. noch Tage nach seinem Verschwinden gelebt haben könnte; wo er sich aufhielt, war nicht zu ermitteln. Der analysierte Mageninhalt ergab als letzte Mahlzeit ein Essen, welches ihm seine Mutter fünf Tage zuvor gekocht hatte. Entweder wurde er kurz nach seinem Verschwinden getötet und die Leiche (die am Fundort keine Verwesungsspuren aufwies) zwischenzeitlich extremst abgekühlt, oder er war das Opfer einer (unerklärlichen) Zeitreise.

Ein Selbstmord scheint aus den oben genannten Gründen also auszuscheiden- F.`s Talente dürften wohl eine zu große Bedrohung für die Sicherheit der damaligen Technologien dargestellt haben. Seine Absicht war es zwar niemals, Kapital aus seinen Erkenntnissen zu schlagen; aber natürlich hätte er diese Erkenntnisse (aus seiner Hackerethik heraus) in der Szene bekannt gemacht. Seine Angehörigen, Freunde sowie einige Protagonisten des CCC glauben ebenfalls bis heute nicht daran, das Tron sich selbst das Leben genommen hat- leider verliefen alle Untersuchungen dazu im Sand.

Tron`s Tod beschäftigt natürlich weiterhin die Phantasie vieler Menschen- so wurde er z.b. von Autor Jan Gaspard zur zentralen, mythischen Figur einer Hörspielreihe namens “Offenbarung 23” gemacht; mehr Infos zu dieser Serie (die ich als Die-Hard-Fan im übrigen unverzichtbar finde, und die jeder Verschwörungsfreak kennen sollte) gibt es hier.

On Thursday night I went to see My Ruin for the second time this year I almost didn’t go, but I’m really glad I did. I really appreciate Mike coming with me again as well… I know they are not exactly his cup of tea haha. Thankfully he really enjoyed Illuminatus (a local progressive metal band) – I think we’ve seen them about three or four times in the last few years!
