I recently stumbled across a blog of a girl I know from school, and it inspired me to start blogging again.  Some of you know of my old blog that was filled with thoughts, emotions, ramblings, and too much personal info, and although I still want to give some of my insight to the world,  I’ve decided to keep this fun, light, and hopefully inspirational.

So without further ado…I bring you…Inspire me…

Charles will once again be offering collectors and fans of his illustration work a Christmas holiday special.  This year, the special will include a free print of your choice.  In addition, the artist will include a free limited edition pastel print of the Joseph Horne Co. Christmas tree.  The lighting of the Horne’s Christmas tree has been a long-standing family tradition in the city of Pittsburgh.

The Joseph Horne Co., often referred to simply as Horne’s by Pittsburghers was an iconic regional department store located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.   It was one of the oldest department stores in the country after being founded by Joseph Horne (1826-1891) in 1849.   The department store chain operated for nearly 145 years until it ceased operation in 1994 after it merged with Lazarus, a division of the Federated Dept. Stores, Inc.

Joseph Horne was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania.  He moved to Pittsburgh where landed his first job in the retail trade with Christian Yeager.   At age of 23, he bought F.H. Eaton store and eventually renamed it the Joseph Horne Co.   It became the leading department store in Pittsburgh, along with Kaufmann’s lasting for generations.   In 1879, a new central location was built at the corner of Penn Avenue and Stanwix Street.   The building was a 7-story landmark and the first department store in the city’s downtown district.   The annual lighting of the Horne’s Christmas Tree at their flagship store was a long held family Christmas tradition.   The Christmas tree display was six stories high and erected on the building’s corner.  Although the store ceased operation, it remains a tradition with Pittsburgh’s annual Light-Up Night festivities.   Crowds would also gather during the Christmas season to view the Christmas display windows, which often were very elaborate and included animated moving characters.

Doing drawings for christmas presents is kind of lame, but its better than a kick in the teeth!

I am starting to reinvent myself … at least this is what I have in mind. I am glad (not really … but being unemployed has its good parts also) I have some free time to be able to rediscover what I want to do next, which way to go and what should I do in order to reach my ideals!

let’s go for it!

After a week of lots of hard work and stress and thinking, and reading, watching tutorials, drawing, erasing, drawing again, a tone of recycled paper used for sketches and models … I have finalized the project “Puiul Mot” … the character in the creative brief i have received. I am not very happy with the result of my work, not happy at all … I don’t like the colors – there are too dark, too cold … and I think the most important mistake is the fact that I have designed the character on paper first … it should have been made in photoshop directly, not imported!

But I am proud of myself for having a “result” at all! I am proud that I had the courage and initiative to finish this project and further send it! It is only the start!

So here you are some pictures with the little character … I liked it more on paper!

Fingers: Working up some illustrations from tales and stories in my sketchbook. Just the ground work before starting them in textiles for the next exhibition. They won’t be to everyone’s taste, I understand that.  I enjoy building the images with layers and stylising the faces. So here’s two of the first sketchbook versions, they’ll change as I rework them of course…

 Remember the Shakespeare series of illustrations? Well, I’m thinking of developing the new story illustrations along similar lines…I’m planning on adding text, a short pithy summary of each story alongside the image… The Shakespeare series was pretty successful, it particularly went down well at the Nantwich exhibition, selling 5 out of the 8 on show there. I have now started to read ‘Calvin for Armchair Theologians,’ by Christopher Elwood. I have to admit that I come to this book with a very doubtful attitude. The front cover illustration of John Calvin and the many ‘comic-like’ illustrations throughout the book worry me. I just don’t get a sense that this book is a serious treatment of John Calvin. That is the impression that presents when just looking at the book – I hope to be proven wrong for having ‘judged a book by its cover.’ The illustrations in the book are by Ron Hill, who is apparently a freelance illustrator and cartoonist.

I have to admit that the ‘armchair theologian’ part of the title also gives me a poor impression of the book – it sort of gives me the picture of a guy who loves to watch sport on the TV while sitting in his armchair, while not really taking the sport seriously in his actual life – has nothing to do with it in reality, in that he doesn’t play sport. This is the idea that ‘armchair theologian’ paints for me, which is an approach to theology that is far removed from the Bible’s idea of involvement with the truth.

But, as I said, I hope to be proven wrong for having ‘judged a book by its cover.’

Nowadays online advertising is becoming a trend for many business owners. I recently read at Techcruch that after the first three quarters of this year being flat in online advertising now it is up by 1.7 percent from the second quarter of this year.We see different product promotions in our day to day life. Cette photo date un peu mais je la trouve intéressante parce qu’il se trouve des petits détails amusants. La table en question par exemple est faite de bois russe (dont l’essence m’échappe) et très lourde. Un ami l’avait et ne savait trop que faire de cette retaille alors il m’en a fait cadeau. Elle est tout simplement parfaite pour le dessin. Je lui ai fixé deux soutients à l’arrière pour lui donner un angle. Le crayon sur la table est un Berol Turquoise 6B dont je me sers de temps en temps pour faire des noirs très insistants dans un dessin à la mine. Parlant de mine, on peut voir à droite de la table un paquet de mines Pentel 2B de 0.5mm. Ce sont ces mines qui remplissent exclusivement mon crayon pousse-mine. Le 2B c’est ma mine favorite. On peut lui faire faire n’importe quoi en autant que l’on ait un tant soit peu d’habilité. De plus elle est souple et solide en même temps sans toutefois trop beurrer.

Juste devant les mines y’a un tas de disquettes. En fait elles n’ont rien à voir avec le dessin, j’en faisais le ménage et j’ai oublié de les enlever pour faire la photo. Sept dessins sur la table sont encrés, avec les crayons qui se trouvent dans la tasse à droite (celle avec la grosse face de chat). Parmis ces crayons-encreurs on y retrouve des Pigma Micron ainsi que des Pilot Drawing Pen de différentes tailles. La tasse a été faite dans une boutique de la rue St-Denis par votre humble serviteur. C’est l’endroit qui vous permet de dessiner ce que vous voulez sur les tasses avec du matériel spécialisé. En-dessous de la tasse: plein de dessins et d’esquisses. Devant la table, à peine visible en bas, le ruban adhésif. Ce ruban sert à maintenir en place des dessins lors d’encrage ou de lettrage. Sur la table, en haut à droite, une autre pile de barbots assez variés. Et, finalement, en haut, presqu’au centre; une toute jeune Pénélope qui aimait passer ses soirées là pendant que je noircissais le papier.

I’m so ridiculously happy i found this blog today by the beautifully talented (and australian yay!) artist kelly smith. She does the most amazing illustrations – absolutely breathtaking!!!! If you want to purchase any of her illustrations (and I highly suggest that you should – especially with christmas lurking around every corner) then visit her etsy, or visit her blog here. Word for the wise: she, like I, also LOVES christmas so has done some wicked christmas illustrations. Yes, i just used the word wicked. Thats how brilliant they are.
