I received Omelle’s 2010 Spring/Summer kit and I am so glad to share what I received with my readers. Cherise and Nicole’s inspiration for this season is “PLANES!, TRAINS! AND AUTOMOBILES!”. Both ladies take inspiration from chopper blades, luggage tabs, railroad tracks, conductor hats, dashed traffic lines and automobile shifter knobs. Omelle is definitely going to make shoes the focal point of ladies’ outfits for the Spring. These shoes will be available in stores February 2010.

I live in Taebaek. Seoul is 3-4 hours away. Chuncheon, our provincial capital is about 3 hours away. Daegu, 3rd largest Korean city is about 3 hours away. Taebaek is the middle of nowhere.

Sometimes we need to get away and have our dose of western goodness. These days we are turning to Daegu more. Why? Its closer than Seoul, we can drive there, its like “mini Seoul” and it has Costco.

Major added bonus is this place.

We’ve been going to Daegu for a few years now, and about a year ago discovered Espressamente Illy. Think of one of the most modern and funkiest coffee shops anywhere in the world, then put it in downtown Daegu. Its an amazing place. I know Illy associate themselves with design and fashion and this place is no exception.

Delicious delicious coffee’s, amazing cakes, awesome sandwiches. Hard to beat (actually there is one place better, but its in Seoul).

We usually go for breakfast. Korean breakfasts are usually nothing flash. Rice, Kimchee and Soup. Other alternatives are opening up, Dunkin Donuts, Macdonalds etc, but they can’t compare with first rate food like this

Yes, its expensive, but so is every coffee shop in Korea. What you see above was W19,000 and worth every individual won. Its perfect coffee with the milk steamed to perfection, the sandwiches are freshly made, with (by Korean standards hard to find) fresh ingredients.

The reigning king of premium coffee establishments- Starbucks, of course- has a new contender with some interesting tricks up its sleeve… Italian giant, Illy, is planning to enter the US market in a big way but rather than starting by spending millions on advertising and marketing, they have chosen to go after the independent coffee giants of the country.

Its art-inspired cups are a favorite of Italiaphiles (a good friend whose husband is Milanese was my introduction to the designer series of tiny espresso cups and saucers). And, after three years of success in Italy, the company has expanded its Artisti del Gusto (Artist of Taste) certification to the U.S., with 28 shops around the country serving Illy coffee, and about 100 more planned by 2012.

Illy’s Artisti del Gusto certification works this way: independent coffee shops with “relevance in their market” are selected to use only Illy coffee beans and agree to do so for a three-year period. Baristas are trained to pull an Illy-quality espresso and given recipes for other drinks common to Artisti del Gusto shops. Illy provides art work, coffee machines, glassware and other branded touches, such as the red Illy umbrellas. Certified coffee shops are periodically monitored for consistency, and the certification can be pulled if the lattes aren’t up to snuff.

Not only is this is a proven way to expand with minimal investment, it’s also a way to increase the reach of a brand, and indoctrinates a much wider audience to the superiority of your coffee beans. In other words, it’s a great way to market your product in grocery stores and online outlets, without a national advertising campaign. A coffee shop on your corner is far better than a billboard, since it’s a place you already trust and whose coffee you are conditioned to love by association. Starbucks sells the majority of its packaged coffee through grocery stores; a whopping two-thirds of its ground and whole bean sales take place outside of its coffee shops.

Personally, I do not think that Starbucks (or McCafé, for that matter) have anything to worry about in terms of volume. However, this positioning will do wonders for Illy´s brand recognition as a premium product and ultimately benefit its grocery store sales.

Pen Tests

Pardon the long gap between posts. I don’t think I mentioned this before, but I’m moving. To New York. In a few weeks.

Lots has to happen before 11/23, and between finishing up projects at my current job, packing, trying to see all my friends before I leave, and squeezing in a week at my mom’s in NM, I’m really not going to have a lot of free time prior to the move.

In the interim, behold the espresso cups I just bought, that I have been wanting since they came out in 2004. I spent more than I care to admit on them, but they conjure memories of going to an art supply store with my Pop as a kid, and I’ve been in love since the moment I saw them.

Are there any dishes or implements that you had to have because they remind you of someone? I’d be interested to hear about said items.

Just before a move is the worst time to be acquiring new stuff. However, I’ve had a saved search for this set on eBay for years, and for one reason or another I kept missing the opportunity to buy when they popped up. Saved search deleted: I’ve got the signed and numbered set now.

The pen tests remind me of going to Palace Art & Office Supply as a kid with my Pop, so I was instantly attached to the design when i saw it. Which reminds me, I have no idea what happened to my navy Palace t-shirt. That shirt was so comfortable.

I could use some espresso right now. I’m spending too many late nights trying to finish projects before I leave my current job. It’s my own fault, really. Unlike in previous years where they loaded me up with way too much work, my current position isn’t too much work, it’s just work I’m not interested in. I’ve been finding it incredibly hard to focus, so I’m getting further and further behind. Thankfully there is an end to this in sight… after a couple more weeks of sleep deprivation. No burning bridges.

Considering that I work w/ Grey and Brookz, I try not to post everything that they do here, but this tune is gonna be an anthem. And well, I needed to post an update about all of the cool shit they are into right now. A couple of months ago, J. Brookinz sent me the makings of this beat, and I about flipped. The tune is a no brainer. It turns an 80s rock anthem into a Bmore banger! I started shuffling rough edits out to some friends I thought might dig it, and my guy Illy latched on to it. The track eventually flushed itself out w/ verses from both Illy and Grey. Right now you can just listen to it, but next week, Heavy Gun is giving the tune away for FREE! I would be a hypocrite if I didn’t live up to my own request. This is the inside of my fridge at the moment, with Harvest Moon and Hornsby’s Hard Cider. autumnal flavors at their best. Friday afternoon I was walking out of my building and promoters for Illy Espresso were handing out cases of their new Espresso drink. I was wearing pink tights and leather boots, and probably am their target demographic, so they gave me a case and asked me to pose with a can. Me trying to kick my coffee addiction has obviously not been helped by this. I am now a happy woman with my fridge stocked with essentials for fall.

While working in LICM’s Communications Office, I have been researching “mommy blogs”. There are some f***ing disturbing material on mommy blogs. Like this …a Childbirthing Education Doll that some one MADE. Some one out there in the world THOUGHT this would be a cute idea and MADE it. IT EXISTS. I’m sorry for posting this photo. It is disturbing. My mother does this kind of crocheting but made cute animals for my sisters and I when growing up. Now, I will never look at homemade crafts the same way again. Ugh. Click on the image to see more photos – including the baby with the umbilical cord attached. GAH! There are also a LOT of blogs about keeping sex alive after having kids. While I agree that mommy bloggers are a powerful force to be reckoned with, after reading many I have reaffirmed the fact that I will not be mature enough to have children for a few years.

I also had a pleasant little revelation last night as I was gallivanting in the LES and Brooklyn. I use to have a habit of romanticizing a past I was never alive for. The ’60s, Andy Warhol’s Silver Factory, speakeasies…..and then I realized that in the future, there will be people looking back and wishing they were living during this time. Every young, alternative generation does the same thing – we work hard for the creative jobs we love, we aren’t so high maintenance that we wouldn’t drink the shitty beer once in a while, we will forego sleep and money to see a film/band/club/party/friends etc. amazing enough that will change our perception of life forever, we know that we won’t be around forever, so we take advantage of the time we have now.

which is how I’m convincing myself that I should forego sleep and money in order to see as much of CMJ as possible this week.

La Corsica è un luogo di follia, una follia bagnata, senza nessuna lucidità di calcolo. Andarvi ha rinverdito in me l’odio e l’amore per i francesi: stronzi stronzi stronzi, talmente che ti viene da ridere.
Si può dire che il francesino è il tipico insetto che mio fratello schiaccerebbe in due secondi,due, se non avesse paura degli insetti.
Ma i corsi non sono francesi, sono corsi e basta.
Ecco come entrammo in contatto con la mafia indipendentista e ambientalista, la mafia corsa.
Ci serviva un taxi, dovevamo andare alla famosa discoteca di @@@. Non eravamo riusciti a noleggiare un’auto perché ci mancava una carta di credito, dico una vera, non quella postepay ecc, una di quelle che ti fa credito e ti svuota le tasche biliari con gli interessi. Avevamo provato a convincere le diverse società di noleggio che non saremmo mai scappati con la loro auto ( trattasi di un’isola), che saremmo tornati in aereo, che avremmo lasciato loro una cauzione di $$$, che eravamo dei bravi ragazzi, che avevamo studiato a Parigi, che avevamo studiato ad Harvard, che uno di noi era stato segnalato per il nobel per l’onestà (sempre a caccia di soprusi), che uno aveva vinto il campiello, che l’altro si era rotto un braccio parando un gol che era andato in rete, che un altro cucinava un’ottima parmigiana e baciava in modo strepitoso. Niente, su quest’ultima ci fermarono, pensando che volevamo corromperli con prestazioni sessuali e ci dissero:
“Si vous aves pas une carte de credit, vous avez pas le droit!”
Ecco l’odioso (l)egalitarismo burocratico francese, grazie al quale gli studenti hanno borse di studio, le famiglie indigenti ricevono assegni e la mensa costa 2 euro e 70: l’avere o non avere il diritto, essere o non essere nel giusto. Amore, odio, invidia. Liberté, fraternité.
Niente auto, in ogni caso.
Una parte di noi, quella riflessivo-passivo-sconsolata se ne stava di fronte alla nostra tenda, al buio, al fresco e all’autan a bere un Porto di dubbio gusto ( era piuttosto vischioso, ma so che il termine adatto è “tachente”); un’altra parte di noi, quella attivo-danzerino-possibilista invece fremeva a caccia di informazioni, sia perché di Porto ne aveva le palle piene, sia perché competeva con l’altra parte riflessiva, pregustandosi il sapore di un: “avete visto che noi ce l’abbiamo fatta?”. Io e Johnny facevamo parte del gruppo attivo. Io conoscevo la lingua (francese, non corsa) e lui è quel tipo che chiederebbe informazioni turistiche a un cesso acefalo, o a un muto e si incazzerebbe non poco se il povero muto tentasse di spiegargli che è muto, a gesti, sono sicura che si girerebbe e mi direbbe:
“questo mi sta a piglià per il culo. Andiamocene vah”
Tant’è, le provammo veramente tutte. Il tour informativo cominciò al campeggio, dove ci fornirono il numero di una navetta e quello di un taxi. Il taxi non rispondeva, la navetta aveva una segreteria che vi traduco già in italiano:
“Ciao, sono Gringo. Se sentite questa segreteria significa che in un modo o nell’altro mi avete rotto il cazzo, richiamate più tardi, ma senza insistenza” seguiva una voce metallica: “Questa segreteria non vi dà la possibilità di lasciare un messaggio, riprovate più tardi “ ritornava Gringo con un bel rutto ancestrale registrato.
Provai a spiegare a Johnny quel che mi diceva, ma decisi di non spiattellare al cento per cento i fatti, dovevamo stare forti entrambi, dovevamo riuscire ad andare a @@@. Quindi insomma, niente rutto.
Jonny ebbe un colpo di genio: “ andiamo a chiedere a quella pizzeria d’asporto!”. Andammo. Io cominciai alla larga, domandando un caffè ( per fortuna era Illy ), era importante predisporre positivamente il pizzaiolo corso per avere le informazioni che stavamo cercando. Esordìi dicendo: “buono questo caffè, ah ma è Illy, ottima scelta” ( insomma feci finta di aver notato che era Illy solo successivamente all’ordine). “Jonny ne vuoi uno?”
Ci bevemmo sto caffè che effettivamente era qualcosa in più dell’acqua sporca, poi insomma cominciai a chedere se c’era un modo per arrivare a @@@. Il pizzaiolo rispose: “ ci sono delle navette, ma adesso è troppo tardi. Altrimenti in taxi se i taxi sono d’accordo”
Su quest’ultimo punto mi interrogai a lungo: se sono d’accordo? Con chi? Con il cliente o con la discoteca? Conoscevo la Corsica, sapevo che si trattava di un accordo col cliente. Mi immaginai una scena del genere, a Padova:
“Salve, alla stazione”
“No mi spiace, non mi va, chieda a un altro. Sono emotivamente provato”
“scusi ma le allungo 20 euro, non è poco”
“non è una questione di soldi, proprio alla stazione ho dei brutti ricordi”
A questo punto un corso avrebbe risposto: “mi spiace, che cosa le succede? Vuole che guidi io? “
“ sì va bene, ma questo le costerà un supplemento di 5 euro”
“ma non si preoccupi, non stiamo a badare ai soldi quando c’è una persona che sta male”
Un italiano, o meglio io, di fronte a questa scena avrei chiuso la portella dell’auto, mi sarei girata verso i miei amici e avrei detto,con aria perplessa “ bah. Qui in Corsica non ce la fanno. Oh vecchi qui non ce la fanno”.
Il tutto per dire che l’accordo con il cliente era esclusivamente emozionale: mi stai simpatico, mi piace come mi guardi, hai un bell’accento? Ok, ti porto. Mi fai schifo, hai l’alito di un dolce alla castagna che non è della mia pasticceria, porti una camicia in poliestere, parli in italiano come se dovessi capirti, allora niente, ne prendo un altro. L’altro passerà fra mezz’ora? Non porterò a casa i tuoi 20 euro? Pazienza, io sono una persona libera.
Perché alla fine di quello si parla, della libertà, dell’indipendenza. I corsi vorrebbero essere liberi ( non tutti eh), indipendenti dalla Francia, indipendenti dall’Italia, assoluti; ma non ci riescono, da secoli, e la mafia riesce solo a proteggere l’ambiente dall’edificazione selvaggia, dal turismo d’assalto, dai palazzacci au bord de la mer. E allora i corsi vi dicono: vi sopportiamo eh, vi sopportiamo perché voi turisti ci date da mangiare, ma null’altro, non vi promettiamo che saremo gentili e che cercheremo di venirvi incontro.
