“I’m gonna sing this song with all of my friends…”

I’m on my way to a friend’s early Thanksgiving dinner party aptly called “Friendsgiving.” Well no band makes me think of a group of friends more than I’m From Barcelona. The mere fact that there are 29 members in the band (not all pictured), and that their first full length album was titled “Let Me Introduce My Friends” really makes it hard not to think of a group of people that just might like each other. Plus their videos always put me in a good mood. This is a very creative group of people who contrary to their moniker are actually from Sweden. Enjoy.

Here is a list of my favourite front people of the year. The list is based on stage presence, charisma, performance and intrigue, and in no order:

Meredith Metcalf

I think the photo says it all. A really incredible frontwoman. Music Go Music. 

Kevin Barnes

It seems like a long, long time ago since I last saw of Montreal. It was my favourite show of the year for quite a while. The whole band are excellent but Barnes has such an effortlessly cool, magnetic stage presence. of Montreal.

Nedelle Torrisi

I love Cryptacize. Nedelle is the perfect front woman, dancing along to the music and singing with alot of animation. It’s wonderful! Cryptacize.

Karin Anderssen

Karin gets to be on the list because, even though you can’t see her, she’s completely hypnotic and fascinating.

Mariam Wallentin

Mariam sings with so much passion and feeling. During songs like There Is No Light it’s hard to take your eyes from her as she switches between the two mics, bangs the drums and motions with her arms along to the lyrics of the song. It’s brilliant; she is an amazing performer. Wildbirds & Peacedrums.

Anja Plaschg

The 19 year old Austrian is so intense, so hypnotic… completely entrancing. She has a Bjork-esque mysticism to her, a truly talented performer already. Soap&Skin.

Emanuel Lundgren

Emmanuel is the perfect leader to the wonderful Swedish troupe, comprised entirely of JOY. Watching him makes me feel happy. He intereacts with the crowd and the band members brilliantly… and crowd surfing is always fun. I’m From Barcelona.

Jessica Larrabee 

Jess rocks. She’s got such a powerful voice and is great to watch and listen to… she can win over any crowd with her charm! She Keeps Bees.

Kristian Matsson

With the exception of a handful of songs, I’m not that familiar with his music. Despite this, he commandeered the crowd at End of the Road. He was alone on the stage but managed to make it feel full. He darted about and played with so much energy; I really enjoyed his set. The Tallest Man On Earth.

Tim Kasher

Playing guitar right at the edge of the stage, jumping into the audience, climbing atop the speakers… it was exciting and a joy to be witnessing. Cursive.

Annie Clark

Annie Clark is the Queen of charisma. She’s a brilliant front woman; confident, charming… and she shreds on the guitar. St. Vincent.

It all began with Fawlty Towers, apparently. Manuel, the waiter, ‘e’s from Barcelona… How exactly that relates to a 30-strong big band from Jönköping, Sweden, I have no idea, but that’s what they called themselves. I’m from Barcelona.

They have to be the geekiest-looking group of people I have ever seen, with their 70’s-80’s wardrobe, crazily cool hairdos and glasses so big Kim Jong-Il would have spec-envy. The lead singer and writer of most of the songs, Emmanuel, is a glorious ginger, stylishly scruffy in a way that few could achieve without descending into homelessness.

The music, on their first album at least, is big silly bouncy pop, it’s happy, daft and nostalgic. Yes, all that at the same time.

They are also responsible for the best concert I have ever been to. They were supported by Finno-French duo The Do (you do know a few of their songs, you just don’t know you do…) and the lovely SoKo, so things were already off to a good start by the time the 28 members of I’m from Barcelona’s tour formation trooped onto the stage. And started throwing giant balloons into the crowd.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a band interact with their audience in quite the same way, it was like a big kids party, we were all singing along and getting quite giddy, jumping about, bouncing balloons at each other, throwing confetti and just generally having a good time. Usually a concert is all about *us* watching *them*, but in this case, we were all interacting with each other as well. I don’t think I have ever had that much exercise, neither before nor since. I felt like I was 15, I didn’t even feel my poor aged almost-30 joints creaking in protest as I hopped and jumped. Well, not until the next day, of course, but what the hell, it was worth it!

The new album, “Who killed Harry Houdini” is a lot less big and silly and daft, and quite a bit more nostalgic, almost melancholic. It’s still good, but it doesn’t quite give me the same kick as the bouncy “We’re from Barcelona”…

I approved of this show. Firstly, I’m From Barcelona are SUPER fun, secondly, Favela Chic is about 3 minutes from where I work. Super convenient. Despite being a mere 3 minutes from my office, I had never actually been to Favela Chic. It’s in Shoreditch opposite The Foundry. Inside is a medium sized main area, perhaps 200 person capacity, with some tables round the edges and a leafy stage area. From the ceiling hang chairs and other random trinkets. It was a cosy place and felt very Spanish (it made me want Nando’s).

There was no support band but there was a DJ spinning some tunes. The show was only announced a week or so before it happened, and it didn’t seem to be sold out. It was a shame because I’m convinced anyone who likes to have fun would love I’m From Barcelona.

I’m From Barcelona are just a fun band. You can’t go to a show and not have fun. There was bags and bags of confetti, giant balloons, paper planes… dancing, singing, crowd surfing. There were 12 members in the band and every single one of them looked like they were having a brilliant time. Set highlight for me, again, was Oversleeping/We’re From Barcelona. I love the transition between the two songs and We’re From Barcelona had literally the whole room bouncing and singing along. I’m From Barcelona are a fantastic band, what they do is really wonderful and I can’t wait to see them again. Listen to their sweet songs.

Strange gig to shoot, this one…ran out to catch a train, had no idea if I was on the guest list or not and subsequently didn’t bring my flash, forgetting that this tiny venue – which isn’t really suited to live bands in any way, form or manner – wouldn’t be kind in the lighting area.

After struggling for ten minutes with the terrible low light – almost half the band, including the singer, were shrouded in darkness for most of the gig – I submitted to using what I had on me – my nice 30mm/1.4 and the pop-up flash (which I used for probably the first time on my current camera).

What I’ve come to hate is using a flash at such close range – any kind of flash – it bugs the performers and it’s too damn big – you stand out a mile away, half the audience get blinded…it’s just not nice to have in a gig as photographer, performer or punter. The only bonus is that small venues without lighting look a million times better with a properly dialed down flash.

But this was not a properly dialed-down flash. This was the shittiest little pop-up thing that should probably be removed from all SLR cameras. No use to anyone 99 per cent of the time….but it saved my life this very night.

The results were mixed, true. I kept having to dial it down and up according to what I was shooting. My success rate was probably about 20 percent or so – which isn’t too bad considering. The best shots came from blindly pointing the camera into the audience when singer Emmanuel Lundgren went crowdsurfing and I’m very, very happy with this one: in focus, fine colours, good composition and totally captures what it was like to be there.

The lesson has been learned too: I shall never leave home without my flash again.

So much fun! I didn’t take many photos at all, despite the band being extremely photogenic. It was pretty dark and flash was a necessity, but my flash gun kept being made of fail. It was too dark for my camera to handle otherwise. Luckily, Bobbles was super kind and leant me his flashgun for a couple of songs. With the exception of my two tasty lenses, all of my gear is entry level and pretty unreliable or hit or miss. I need to save save save and buy a new camera. If you would like to buy me one, that would be pretty nice. In the mean time, you should look at Bobbles’ photos. He has the tastiest gear that I want to steal, and he’s my favourite live music photographer.

You should also build a treehouse, cos it’s a YOU AND ME HOUSE! Yeahhhhhhhh.

I’m From Barcelona are playing a show at Favela Chic. The show seems to be either intentionally very under the radar or just not very well promoted. Tickets are still available and I really recommend coming along, it will be super fun. It’s I’m From Barcelona’s first headline show in London since the truly special, super fun show last November.

That photo is of the band earlier today at Öresund Bridge, en route to sunny Shoreditch! I’m not even being sarcastic, Shoreditch IS actually sunny. Hurray for East London. I have never been to Favela Chic, but look how pleasingly close it is to where I work. A mere 0.3 miles, that’s how I like it.

YES! YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES. Feeling sombre? Lethargic? Lost the will to live? Well, not anymore! One of the funnest bands ever, I’m From Barcelona, have a show at Favela Chic in Shoreditch next Thursday. Hurrah! Let’s build treehouses. YAY! Seriously. This is going to be so fun. Come and sing and dance.

I'm From Barcelona

I know I was duped by Elliot Brood, but I wasn’t fooled by I’m From Barcelona. They don’t look Spanish, they don’t sound Spanish, they don’t dress Spanish…heck, they’re not Spanish.  What they are though is an eclectic 30 member band from Sweden.  Check out the video link below, I’m not joking…30 band members!

It all started back in 2005 with frontman Emanuel Lundgren writing a few songs and inviting 29 of his closest friends into the recording studio with him.  Soon after they performed a few live shows with all the members and caught the attention of record companies and Swedish bloggers.  Personally they were brought to me on Christmas morning a couple of years back in a mixtape that Jesus my sister made for me.  Although her cd was full of really great music, this one song in particular stood out.  We’re From Barcelona was the bands first (sort of) hit song and since then they have released their second full length album.  For those of you who liked the Blogotheque version of the Fleet Foxes song, I have included a really cool Take Away Show which features Emanual Lundgren in a Parisian bar singing one of my favorite songs by I’m From Barcelona.

Bonjour Dour. We hebben het slechts enkele keren gehoord, ook al was het een inkopper. Intussen was de kleur van het gras al behoorlijk verbleekt en begonnen de koppen en de rest van de ledematen behoorlijk zwaar te wegen. Het was aan de talloze bands om de vermoeidheid te verjagen.

Om wakker te worden moest je niet echt bij Malibu Stacy (Last Arena) zijn. Razend populair over de taalgrens en ook best wat leuke popsongs. Maar het was allemaal een beetje te braaf en dus al gauw vervelend. Al kan dat uiteraard ook aan ons liggen.

In La Petite Maison dans la Prairie werd de slaap dan weer wel uit onze ogen geblazen. Met songs die op het kruispunt lagen van de wegen die door folkies en psychedelici bewandeld werden, wist Arbouretum een pakkende set neer te planten. De teksten zijn verhalend en niet meteen optimistisch. De muziek is lang uitgesponnen, omvat dubbele gitaarsolo’s over een diep grommende ritmesectie. Soms werden de nummers minutenlang gerekt om de spanning te laten doordringen. Dit was een intens hoogtepunt van een groep die – en misschien maar goed ook – waarschijnlijk nooit de commerciële doorbraak zal kunnen forceren. Maar zo lang ze op dit niveau blijven musiceren, kan ons dat geen barst schelen.

Smetteloos wit was de outfit waarmee Stijn de Dance Hall wist te verblinden. Opnieuw bewees hij een rasentertainer te zijn die de zaal met ogenschijnlijk sprekend gemak uit zijn gouden handen deed eten. De muziek kwam grotendeels uit de stapel doosjes die hij bij zich had, maar daar stoorde enkel een kniesoor zich aan. Met een uiterst funky festivalset met ook een nieuw nummer tussen de hits was dit een genoegen om naar te kijken.
Dansjes over het hele podium, het publiek Lang Zal Ze Leven laten zingen voor een jarige, niets was hem te veel. Uiteindelijk moest zelfs zijn designerhemd eraan geloven. Deze hooggehakte jongen pakte de tent professioneel in en leverde die weer af inclusief rood strikje.

Erg veel verschil met het optreden in de Botanique eerder dit jaar was er niet, maar desondanks bleef het een genoegen om The Gaslight Anthem aan het werk te zien. Op ‘The ’59 Sound’ staan dan ook zo goed als geen missers en heel wat kijkers brulden de teksten van begin tot einde mee.
De combinatie van potige rocksongs met de voeten stevig in de punk verankerd en de aan Springsteen referende teksten werkte dan ook perfect. Bovendien hadden de heren op gewiekste wijze stukjes It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World, Stand By Me en Purple Rain in hun set gesmokkeld.
Ook nu leek de set soms een beetje in te zakken, maar dat werd dan achteraf (prachtige versie van The Backseat als afsluiter) weer ruimschoots goedgemaakt. Hoe dan ook blijven wij verknocht aan The Gaslight Anthem.

Aanvankelijk leek het niets te worden met het optreden van Esser. Jawel, branie genoeg en de looks ontbraken al evenmin. Maar de songs leken niet uit de verf te komen. Geleidelijk aan kroop de eigenzinnige mix van pop, soul en dansmuziek toch onder je huid zodat dit optreden alsnog geslaagd kon worden genoemd. Aan lef ontbrak het deze snaak duidelijk niet. Ben Esser eigende zich het podium toe als was het zijn natuurlijke biotoop. De ene rocksong volgende de volgende popsong op. Afsluiten met single Headlock en de klus was geklaard. Jeugdige klasse.

Het voelde een beetje vreemd aan. De eerste keer dat Gong (Magic Tent) optrad in België was in 1969. Drie vierden (en dat is nog een erg voorzichtige schatting) van de aanwezigen op dit festival was toen nog niet eens geboren. Maar blijkbaar hebben de geestesverruimende middelen Daevid Allen enkel wat gekker gemaakt, want fysiek kon hij nog prima mee met de jeugd. Tegen een achtergrond van wacky tekenfilmpjes en projecties speelden vier generaties muzikanten een volledig geschifte set. Van aan vroege Pink Floyd refererende rocksongs werd overgeschakeld op gedichten (voorgedragen door een al even bejaarde Gilly Smyth) waarna dan weer een dwarsfluitsolo werd ingezet. Om maar te zeggen dat deze show meedingt naar de originaliteitsprijs van deze editie. En dan hebben we het nog niet eens over de kostuums gehad. Alleen was het bij momenten moeilijk om je aandacht er voortdurend bij te houden. Het publiek was er in elk geval wild van.

Levende legendes krijg je nu eenmaal niet elke dag te zien. Het was dan ook logisch dat wij voor de Red Frequency Stage stonden toen Sly & Robbie samen met Bitty McLean daar hun opwachting maakten. Dit olijke ritmeduo heeft een kamer vol riddims bij elkaar gespeeld en zijn verantwoordelijk voor het geluid van meerdere, legendarische reggae-albums. Bitty McLeans zuikerzoete stem zorgde voor de lovesongs, daarbij occasioneel bijgestaan door Robbie Shakespeare. Het plein voor het podium veranderde dan ook in een gigantische dansruimte. En uiteraard mochten Sly & Robbie hun respectievelijke kunsten tentoonspreiden.

Dat Pet Shop Boys (Last Arena) iets specials voor ogen hadden, was al duidelijk aan de vierkante blokken die de hele dag aan de zijkant van het podium hadden staan blinken. Toen het eindelijk zover was, bleek de show niet meer dan een mooi georkestreerde (dat wel) aaneenrijging van videoclips. De vierkante blokken fungeerden als videoscherm en als leuke gadgets tijdens een greatesthitsshow. Maar daarvoor waren wij nu eenmaal niet naar Dour gekomen. Een knusse huiskamer met een behoorlijke televisie leek ons daarvoor meer geschikt zodat wij algauw het hoofdpodium achter ons lieten om betere oorden op te zoeken.

Waar het spektakel op het hoofdpodium eerder digitaal aandeed, was wat er zich afspeelde in La Petite Maison dans la Prairie veel meer organisch. Emmanuel Lundgren en zijn I’m From Barcelona zetten daar een heerlijk feestje op touw. Het is op zich al indrukwekkend om veertien  (!!) mensen een podium te zien bevolken: blazers, gitaren, bas, drums, toetsen en uiteraard het koor. Hoewel de klankbalans niet echt helemaal goed zat, wist dit combo wel van meet af aan de sfeer erin te brengen. Daarvoor waren de tientallen reuzeballonnen niet eens nodig geweest, al was het wel een aardig toemaatje. Lundgren nam zijn band op sleeptouw doorheen hun (nog vrij beperkte) oeuvre en de hele tent ging maar wat graag mee. Het feelgoodgehalte van dit optreden lag erg hoog en het was dan ook met een bijzonder goed gevoel dat wij de derde dag afsloten.

Ook de derde dag was erg geslaagd te noemen. De katers werden vakkundig weggewerkt door een aantal prima optredens. Nu enkel nog dag vier overleven.

Nowych Horyzontów ciąg dalszy. Wczoraj we wrocławskim Arsenale wystąpili I’m From Barcelona. Było ich sporo. Prosto ze Szwecji.

Bis zaczęli oczywiście od “Treehouse”. Dużo radości, balonów, confetti i nawet crowd surfing.

Po I’m From Barcelona scenę opanowali The Field ze swoimi hipnotyzującymi dźwiękami. Było pięknie.

1. Acid House Kings – This Is A Heart Is A Stone (2005)

Cea mai tare trupa suedeza de la ABBA incoace. Canta din 91, cand cei trei fondatori, fratii Odlund si Johan Angergard, aveau in jur de 15 ani si erau mari fani ai scenei indie pop britanice (care era infinit mai misto si mai creativa decat acum). Primul album le-a aparut in 92 si de atunci si-au propus sa scoata mai scoata inca doua la o distanta de 5 ani fiecare. Si asa au facut. Bineinteles, intre timp le-au crescut flocii cei blonzi, s-au dezvirginat, li s-a ingrosat vocea, si-au luat o gagica in formatie. Ciclul de trei albume s-a incheiat in 2002, asa ca apoi au putut sa scoata unul nou ceva mai devreme. Sing Along with Acid House Kings se cheama el si este insotit de un DVD ptr karaoke. Din fericire piesele de pe DVD se gasesc pe youtube, asa ca atunci cand ma nimeresc singur acasa sau in birou mai cant si eu cu AHK (asta din cauza ca am voce groaznica si nu tin sa ma auda si altii).

2. The Beach Boys – Wouldn’t It Be Nice (1966)

Daca mi-ai pune iataganul la gat si mi-ai cere sa spun care-i cel mai tare album din istoria muzicii pop/rock, cu spaima as pronunta: Beach Boys – Pet Sounds (1966). Asta desigur spre uimirea prietenilor mei rochisti. Melodii si sunete incredibile. Se aud si mai grozav cu o iarba (am probat). Chiar daca nu-s hippiot si cred ca Tim Leary a fost un asshole, cate odata zic si eu ca amicu’ Thom Yorke: “I wish it was the sixties”. Wouldn’t it be nice?:)

3. The Beatles – Getting Better (1967)

Un cantec fabulos de pe un album fabulos, Sgt. Pepper… Asta as vrea sa mi-l cante la inmormantare. Cand s-ar auzi Paul: “A little better all the time”, cu John, din spate: “It can’t get no worse”, as invia pur si simplu . Better, better, better…

4. Big Star – September Gurls (1974)

Varianta de studio e aici.

Au cantat in prima jumatate a anilor 70 cand au scos trei albume fara de succes. Oarecum normal intr-o epoca in care lumea era coplesita sub maretia trupelor de hard rock sau prog. Big Star luasera rochenrolu’ de acolo de unde il lasasera pe la jumatatea decadei precedente Beatles, Who sau Byrds. Melodii simple, guitar-based, aparent moi, dar totusi cu coi. Dupa desfiintare, notorietatea trupei avea sa creasca, inclusiv datorita unora ca R.E.M., care au declarat Big Star drept una dintre influentele lor majore.  La fel au facut apoi multe alte trupe de new wave, alternativ sau indie, astfel ca allmusic.com ii numeste cea mai importanta formatie cult dupa Velvet Underground. Big Star s-a reunit in 1993, fara unul dintre membrii fondatori, Chris Bell, absent pe motiv de deces. Pe youtube se mai gasesc doar versiuni live recente la “September Gurls”, fara exagerare, o capodopera a muzicii pop/rock. Am fost surprins sa gasesc piesa pe trilulilu, unde, previzibil, are mai putine comment-uri decat Nicolae Guta.

5. The Clash – Train In Vain (1979)

As merita sa iau bataie de la punkisti ca i-am bagat pe The Clash la cantecele de fredonat. Dar “Train In Vain” este de fredonat, cu toate ca ramane un punk cu coaie mari (da, da, punk). Fucking timeless! (Important de stiut, voce la piesa asta este Mick Jones, nu Joe Strummer).

6. Donovan – Jennifer Juniper (1968)

Initial scotianul Donovan Leitch suna ca un Bob Dylan wannabe, which is bad. In scurt timp insa, omul si-a gasit un stil propriu, un fel de pop-folk psihedelic, very charming. Probabil hipsterii zic ca e un hippiot obsolete, dar nu-si dau seama cat de mult a influentat indie pop-ul recent, incepand cu regii absoluti ai genului si compatriotii sai, Belle & Sebastian (numai asculta cu atentie vocea lui Stuart Murdoch). Jennifer Juniper e un cantecel tare simpatic despre gagica lui de atunci, Jennifer Boyd (sora lui Patty Boyd, nevasta, pe rand, a lui George Harrison si Eric Clapton).

7. The Housemartins – Happy Hour (1986)

Sunt considerati cea mai importanta trupa indie pop britanica din anii 80, dupa The Smiths of course. Mie imi suna ca un adevarat antidot pentru poponarelile smiorcaite ale lui Morrisey. Housemartins au cantat doar vreo 5 ani, suficient pentru a ramane in istorie. Paul Heaton (solist vocal) va fonda apoi Beautiful South (alta trupa delicioasa), impreuna cu un alt coleg de la Housemartins, Dave Hemingway (tobar si deasemenea vocalist). Fostul basist de la Housemartins, Norman Cook, avea sa cunoasca si el o mare glorie, sub aliasul Fatboy Slim…

8. I’m From Barcelona – Oversleeping (2006)

I’m From Barcelona sunt de fapt din Suedia. Cica formatia are 29 de membrii, dar de fapt unul singur conteaza, Emanuel Lundgren, omul care e lead vocal si face cantecele. IT-ist de meserie, in concediul sau din 2005, s-a gandit sa inregistreze niste cantece si a chemat niste prieteni sa bage si ei la refrene. Si asa s-au strans aia 29 de care ziceam. Emanuel spunea intr-un interviu ca un alt nume care li s-ar potrivi foarte bine ar fi Happy Amateurs. Amatorii au deja doua albume (la Mute Records if you know what I mean) si au cantat inclusiv in America, la Lollapalooza, unde au facut ravagii dupa cum se vede pe youtube. Despre “Oversleeping” ce sa zic? E povestea vietii mele de zi cu zi:)

No, nothing to do with MIA, but rather the 30-piece indie pop-rock band / cult from Switzerland, I’m From Barcelona.  Much like The Polyphonic Spree, I’m From Barcelona uses many different instruments, and many, many singers.  Something interesting to note, is that for their debut album, Let Me Introduce My Friends, they worked with one of my new favorite artists, Loney Dear.

Hvis jeg havde haft tid og råd til at komme på Roskilde Festival i år, er der faktisk efterhånden en hel del navne jeg godt kunne tænke mig at se. Eller det er i hvert fald det indtryk jeg har fået efterhånden som årets navne er tikket ind. Så jeg har sat mig for at lave en oversigt herinde, som forhåbenligt kan være inspirerende for jer derude, som skal afsted:

Dem jeg har markeret med fed skrift, er dem jeg er allermest ked af at gå glip af, og som jeg på det kraftigste anbefaler jer der skal afsted, at tjekke ud.

Jeg har været på Roskilde Festival 3 gange i mit liv, og næste hver gang har det været min filosofi, at prioritere de udenlandske navne højst. At der så alligevel har sneget sig et par danske ind på denne liste, hænger sammen med at jeg mener at Rumpistol ville være en speciel oplevelse på Roskilde. Hvad angår Mikael Simpson & Sølvstorm, så var det faktisk på min første Roskilde Festival tilbage i 2003, at jeg for første gang stiftede bekendtskab med dette navn kl. lort natten til lørdag (tror jeg det var), og da det er længe siden jeg sidst har oplevet ham live, kunne det være sjovt at opleve ham live på denne festival igen. Som en slags tradition om man vil.

Det er faktisk en ret lang liste, som ville retfærdiggøre billetprisen alene, i og med at det ville koste mig rundt regnet 100 kr pr. band, og dermed gøre det værd for mig at tage afsted. Men så er der transport og mad + drikke oveni og alt det der. Så det går desværre ikke.
