The world’s premier student technlogy competition, the Imagine Cup has been challenging students from all around to world to show what they’re made of. 2010 Theme

The theme for 2010 is “Imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problems”. Through one of the competitions, you will be trying to solve real world issues such as those listed in the Eight United Nations Millenium Development Goals. These goals are:

1. Eradicate Extreme hunger and poverty
2. Achieve universal primary care
3. Promote gender equality and empower women
4. Reduce child mortality
5. Improve maternal health
6. Combat HIV/Aids, malaria and other diseases
7. Ensure enviromental sustainability
8. Develop a global partnership for development

Pelo jeito, o Imagine Cup 2011 vai ser em Porto de Galinhas… Vejam o que diz a materia do Diario de Pernambuco sobre o Assunto.

A etapa mundial da Imagine Cup 2011, a copa de computação patrocinada pela Microsoft, poderá acontecer em Pernambuco. Pelo menos esta é a expectativa da subsidiária brasileira da multinacional, que enxerga potencial criativo e oportunidades extras no estado. Depois dos estudantes locais terem se destacado por sete anos consecutivos na competição, em finais que já aconteceram no Cairo (Egito) e em Paris (França), por exemplo, a gigante da tecnologia começa a pensar em trazer o evento para o Nordeste brasileiro. A vontade foi sinalizada na última segunda-feira durante a visita do diretor acadêmico da Microsoft, Emanuele Ognissanti, ao Recife. Ele veio conhecer de perto a localidade e conversar com as autoridades locais sobre o assunto. E o governo do estado, por meio da Secretaria de Ciência, Tecnologia e Meio Ambiente, já se comprometeu em desenvolver um projeto de candidatura. Porto de Galinhas, por sinal, seria uma das possíveis sedes.

Os planos de trazer para Pernambuco a final mundial da Imagine Cup, considerada a competição mais importante do setor, que apenas no ano passado reuniu projetos de mais de 310 mil estudantes de todo o planeta, está em consonância com a atitude da empresa em chamar mais atenção para a tecnologia desenvolvida na região. Há cerca de dois meses, o presidente da Microsoft Brasil, Michel Levy, e o governador Eduardo Campos anunciaram que a final nacional da competição em 2010, em abril, também será realizada no estado (pela primeira vez fora de São Paulo). “Esta será a primeira experiência para montarmos um projeto e tentarmos trazer a competição mundial para cá”, explica o gerente executivo acadêmico da Microsoft Brasil, Amintas Neto.

“Um dos objetivos de vir aqui é ver que Pernambuco pode ser uma boa ideia. Não será fácil trazer mais uma final de Imagine Cup para o Brasil (já foi realizada uma edição do evento no país em 2004), pois sempre buscamos oferecer experiências novas aos participantes. Mas acho que a possibilidade de vir a Pernambuco pode sim significar uma experiência completamente diferente”, opinou Ognissanti, que se disse bastante impressionado pelo fato de 16 dos 19 competidores do estado que chegaram à final mundial terem conquistado premiações significativas. “Queremos entender o que existe por aqui que permite isso e descobrir quais são as oportunidades disponíveis para a Microsoft”, declara.

Segundo os executivos, os resultados conquistados pelos estudantes demonstram o quanto o ecossistema local de tecnologia da informação e comunicação (TIC), que envolve universidades, professores, empresas, empresários e governo, está afinado. “Queremos entender realmente o que faz com que estes projetos sigam em frente, com envolvimento de todos, e tentar levar esta fórmula para outros lugares”, completa Ognissanti, falando sobre projetos como vEye, ganhador nacional em 2006, e hoje tocado pela Inove Informática.

Os países candidatos a receber a final mundial de 2011 ainda não foram oficialmente anunciados, mas, a princípio, o Brasil concorrerá com o México e a Irlanda. O vencedor deverá ser declarado até março do próximo ano e, caso a copa em Pernambuco seja eleita, poderá significar avanços ainda maiores para quem trabalha com TI por aqui – com a presença de mais de 500 a 600 competidores, além de executivos e acadêmicos de cerca de 80 países. “Faremos de tudo para conseguir este feito”, finaliza o gerente regional Norte/Nordeste da Microsoft, Luis Pinto.

Imagine Cup adalah ajang kompetisi teknologi paling bergengsi untuk mahasiswa. Dalam acara ini, Microsoft mengajak para generasi muda untuk menyalurkan bakat dan kreatifitas mereka, menghasilkan inovasi teknologi yang mampu membawa perubahan bagi dunia. Imagine Cup diadakan secara rutin setiap tahun. Imagine Cup sudah menjadi kompetisi global, mencari solusi brilian untuk permasalahan global.

Kompetisi Imagine Cup pertama kali diadakan pada tahun 2003. Sejak saat itu, babak Final telah diadakan di berbagai Negara. Spanyol, Brazil, Jepang, India, Korea Selatan, Prancis dan tahun lalu, Mesir. Tahun ini, 2010, Final Imagine Cup akan diadakan pada bulan Juli di Kairo, Mesir.

Echipa Microsoft Student Partners din Facultatea de Informatică prezintă miercuri, 4 noiembrie, de la ora 14, în sala C308, principalele activități și teme din acest an universitar:

• rolul și facilitățile oferite de programul Microsoft Student Partners;
• detalii privind Imagine Cup, cea mai mare competiție de tehnologie dedicată studenților; va fi invitat Adrian Buzgar, membru al echipei Sytech, marea câștigătoare a cupei Imagine Cup 2009 – secțiunea Software Design;
• MSDN AA/ELMS – software Microsoft gratuit și licențiat destinat tuturor studenților facultății;
• Microsoft Students to Business – un program recent dedicat studenților în căutarea unei cariere axate pe tehnologii Microsoft;
• agenda evenimentelor din acest semestru: planificarea lansării Windows 7, un curs de securitate și un workshop Imagine Cup pentru a sprijini participarea studenților la finala mondială a Imagine Cup 2010;
• o prezentare tehnică privind SharePoint, utilă pentru familiarizarea interacțiunii cu portalul FII – cu un concurs cu premii surpriză.

Pentru a se asigura o gestionare cât mai bună a resurselor, studenții sunt rugați să confirme participarea la acest eveniment. Înscrierea este posibilă până pe 4 noiembrie 2009, ora 13:00.

O sa prezint pe scurt niste proiecte / competitii legate de lumi virtuale si 3d games (la doua din ele am participat / paticip personal si sper sa va pot oferi mai multe detalii daca sunteti interesati):

Imagine Cup – Game Design : Un concurs in care o echipa de pana la 4 studenti (+1 mentor), are ca scop realizarea unui joc folosind tehnologii Mircrosoft (XNA 3.0 , Microsoft Visual Studio) pe o tema data. Tema propusa de cei de la Microsoft este de obicei legata de realizarea unui joc cu scopul de a trata cel putin una dintre problemele majore cu care se confrunta lumea : pollution, starvation, etc. Competitia se desfasoara pe parcursul unui an universitar avand 2 sau 3 deadlineuri (unul in sesiunea de iarna , unul in vacanta de primavara si ultimul la terminarea anului universitar).

Dream Build Play : O competitie organizata tot de cei de la Microsoft (si deci folosind aceleasi tehnologii), mult mai scurta ca durata (dureaza aproximativ o luna) in care o echipa formata tot din 4 oameni are ca scop realizarea unui joc pe o tema precum: reazlizarea unui joc in care sa se foloseasca inteligenta artificiala.

3D UPB :  Un proiect organizat de Facultatea de Automatica si Calculatoare ce isi propune realizarea unei lumi virtuale care va fi situata in cadrul facultatii noastre. Daca doriti sa luati parte la acest proiect, sesiunea de inscriere este deschisa pana pe 15 Nov.  Acest filmulet arata in ce stadiu se afla proiectul la momentul actual. Pentru integrarea lumii intr-un MMO se vor folosi tehnologiile puse la dispozitie de catre Multiverse.

O sa revin cu un post in care o sa prezint succint niste jocuri care au participat la competitiile mai sus mentionate.

On Tuesday 27th October, Microsoft visited Liverpool Hope University as part of the Microsoft Inspiration Tour. The event was organised by Dr Nabil Sultan as part of his annual student and staff development activities. Dr Sultan played a leading role in establishing a strong partnership with Microsoft which resulted in substantial benefits to Hope in terms of grants, free software and staff and student development.  Microsoft Academic Evangelist’s Paolo Barone and Ed Dunhill attended to present the event.

Here are some of the things that were shown:

Evolution of Windows

The presentation started of by looking at the evoloution of the Windows operating system. Showing images of Windows 1 all the way through to Windows 7. One of the main concepts that was brought up about the way in which current technologies are trying to be created is the way that they are becoming more and more user friendly. Also, a few of Windows 7  new features were shown.

Silverlight

Silverlight was the first technology on the agenda with various demonstrations being shown.

The use of Microsoft Deep Zoom on the Hard Rock Cafe website was one feature. Paolo demonstrated how high resolution images can now be put onto websites and zoomed into without loss of quality. See the video for the example shown or try it for yourself here.

Another example shown was how Rolling Stone magazines had been scanned and available to view. A particular magazine cover could be chosen, which then showed the contents of that magazine. The text could easily be read by zooming into each page.

Smooth Streaming

We were then introduced to IIS  smooth streaming. This allowed videos to be played on the internet with no buffering required. If there is a change in connection, the video plays through the buffer with the image quality dropping so that there’s no interuption. The demo shown can be found by clicking on this picture:

Out Of Browser Exerperience

As part of an out of browser experience, demonstration we were introduced to Gadfly. This is a Silverlight Twitter Client which allows users to interact with Twitter in a new way.

Paolo demonstrated the ability of using an application in a browser, then being able to install a shortcut of the application directly onto your desktop, with no installation process required. The browser could then be closed with the exact same application still running through another window. This could then be opened at any time including offline, with the users input being updated next time the user went online. You can check out Gadfly by clicking on this picture.

Expression Blend 3 + Sketchflow

Next up was Microsoft Expression Blend 3 + Sketchflow.

We were shown that with the use of sketch flow, manually drawn sketches can be turned into live drafts of potential ideas. Animations were applied to the sketches to allow a demonstration of how the product would work when complete.

Paolo showed an example of a FlickrTable in which pictures  from a Flickr account were presented on a table in the form of polaroid pictures. The pictures could be moved about on the table as desired.  The table was model was constructed in Photoshop and directly loaded into Expression Blend 3. It was also demonstrated how a programmer could work on the project in Visual Studio whilst a designer could still work on it at the same time in Expression Blend 3.

Cloud Computing and Windows Azure

Cloud computing was the next topic with the introduction of Microsoft’s cloud computing platform Windows Azure.

It was discussed that when business first start out, they usually have a cash problem. With Windows Azure, businesses can use as big or little amount of resources as they want on a kind of ‘pay as you go’ contract. Instead of having to buy their own servers and hardware, they can use Microsoft Data Centres with them deciding how much they will need. With the ability to increase or decrease the amount of services being used, their cost of resources can be very efficient.

Imagine Cup

Next up, Paolo told us about the Imagine Cup. The Imagine cup how has now started and this years focuses on Software Design and Game Design.

The theme for 2010 is  “Imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problems.” These are inspired by the  eight United Nations Millenium Development goals. Teams of up to four people can compete in the event and if they reach the finals, this years destination is Poland.

Students can still register for the first round of the Imagine Cup.

DreamSpark

Microsoft DreamSpark is a student initiative which allows students to download and use various Microsoft profoessional-level development and designer  tools for free. This includes Microsoft Visual Studio, Microsoft Expression Blend and XNA Game Studio.

Paolo also told us about the Ultimate Steal in which students can get Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007 for £38.95 or Windows 7 for £30!

Job Opportunities

Finally, we were told about Microsoft’s Graduate Schemes and Britain works. Opportunities for students and people to work for Microsoft or one of their 10,000 associated business partners around Britain.

꿈을 찾아 달리는 두 청년을 소개합니다.

아시는 분들은 다 알겠지만요. 워낙 유명해 져서   바로 이번 Imagine Cup에서 우승을 거머쥔 영웅들 중 두명 (오른쪽 신상, 중간 동훈)입니다.  (자세한 정보는 위 링크를 따라 류한석 님의 Smartplace를 방문해 주시면 될듯 합니다.)

사실 작년에 제가 멘토로 Imagine Cup에 같이 참석했지만,  아쉽게 국내 2위로 쓰디 쓴 잔을 마셔야 했습니다.   그때 1위를 했으면 하며 아쉬움이 너무 많았었는데…

좌절하지 않고 재도전을 통해서 결국 좋은 소식을 들려줘서 고맙네요.

실패는 성공의 어머니라는 말 처럼, 역시 실패에 좌절하지 않고 다시 도전할 줄 아는 자세가 정말 중요한거 같습니다.

아직 나이는 어리지만 둘다 매우 생각이 깊은 친구들입니다.  현실에 안주하기 보다는 힘들지만 도전과 꿈을 찾아 나서는 모습을 보며, “너도 애 아빠가 되봐!!” 라고 말하긴 했지만.. 젊음이 참 부럽네요.

미국에서 건너온 두 친구와 여러가지 애기를 나누었습니다. 물론 저의 말이 별 도움이 되지 않겠지만, 형 말이 정말 맞다며 호응해 주는 걸 보니 사회 짠 밥도 많이 먹은듯 합니다. 

• 동훈이라는 친구는 생물학에 매우 관심을 가지고 있는 공학도 입니다.
• 신상이는 IT 영재라 불릴만큼, 어렸을때 부터 컴퓨터를 다루었구요.

이런 친구들이 한국에서 제대로 일할 수 있는 환경을 만들어 주고, 성장할 수 있는 시스템을 만들 어 주지 못한 것이 선배로써 너무 아쉽네요.  비록 내가 죽기 전에 안되더라도, 조금이라도 나아질수 있게 노력하며 살겠습니다.   여러분도 도와 주세요!.

OK, são notícias velhas, porque fiquei muito tempo sem postar mas tem que ficar registrado aqui: O Brasil foi o maior na Imagine Cup 2009. Maior número de inscritos, maior número de competidores na final, maior número de títulos, simplesmente o Brasil foi melhor em tudo! Só pra documentar segue as equipes que fizeram história lá no Egito esse ano:

• 2nd place Tablet Accessibility Award – IC-Unicamp
• 1st place Interface Design – Willburn

Não consigo nem expressar o quanto foi importante poder participar dessa experiência e ajudar o Brasil a conseguir este ótimo resultado. Conhecer as pirâmides, conhecer essa galera toda, subir no palco pra receber o prêmio. Pra mim foi a realização de um sonho, de verdade.

Foram meses de esforço que valeram a pena. Agora está fechado um capítulo que abriu várias portas. Que venham os novos desafios

First of all many thanks to a friend who took the pains to mail me that she happened to read my blog and that I should keep writing. They say ‘a friend is someone who knows the song in your heart and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words’. Thanks to her that I finally felt like posting this one. So many things have happened in the past 2 months that I guess it took some time for me to come to terms with myself. Here’s a quick list:

1. I finished my engineering studies with static colors . So now I can claim that I am an Engineer. Shaizeen Aga, BTech IT (COEP) happens to be my new designation .
2. We, which means (Akki, Swati and me) won Imagine Cup Parallel Computing Award. I really want to thank some people without whom this achievement would not have been possible.-Niks: For suggesting to me that I participate ( I had better mention Shira’s name here for inviting us to her birthday party and coming late herself which gave Niks and me, the time to start chatting). He not only suggested that I participate but also wholeheartedly believed that I would win . Niks, do let me know how you developed this foresight:).

   -Sudhir: For answering all my silly doubts with his immense patience and helping out.

   -Jinson and Kumbhar Sir: For helping us arrange a quad core machine for getting our test results.

   -And last but not the least Swati, for having a dual core machine, almost killing it for getting the results we got and for converting herself into a anthropomorphic debugger for almost over a month to make our code run with atmost precision and Akki for being at a ‘missed call’ distance from me for last four years and  bearing up with PRETCT who almost used to throw up (or faint) when fed with our code and large datasets.

3. I had my first press conference for winning the Imagine Cup which was arranged by our college. Here’s a short list of various  newspapers covering this:

4. I moved out of Pune and I am back at home now. I definitely miss the city a lot… esp Smokin Joes, Corn Club, Horn Ok Please, Krishna Juice Center, ABC, J-Block and most of all C-O-E-P… The last four years have been some of the best years of my life and they wouldn’t have been so had it not been for all my beloved friends who made it so for me. I miss you all a lot…

Life at home is good.. Rain gods are pouring their hearts out and it rains cats and dogs out here… I have never been a devout  Sun Fan  nor a Rain Fan , but I surely am  missing  Sun a lot . If any you guys happen to see him please let him know I am heart-broken and that he should try striking some sort of pact with Rain and show up atleast for a few hours everyday. I am waiting for the hegemony of Rain god to end and for my mornings to be welcomed by the dulcet sounds of birds instead of the constant clamor of incessant rains.
