It came as a shock to me when I discovered what I was seeing on screen was not what others were seeing. I just don’t mean mesh. Not everyone is running at 1920 x 1080 most are on a laptop it seems. Then in the viewer you have settings from low through mid and high up to ultra with shadows. On top of this we have draw distance which will determine the background. In my circle these days nearly all can see mesh but this was not the case three months ago. It struck me that one of the reasons I made videos (311 on YouTube)  was because I wanted everyone to see what I was seeing in Glorious Wide Screen Technicolor® . Before we look at individual implications let us note something. Soul Mods. Given the vast area of accoutrements and textures available in second life one would be hard pressed to find lino. When I first visited Soul Mods and saw wine bottles on the dance floor I thought they were temporary. I also noticed less than half the available space was being used. It was cramped. BUT mes amies in the real world is not your favourite club a bit down at heels? a bit cramped BUT where you feel at home? If Soul Mods had a makeover that burn in the bar stool that you have picked at when you are feeling a bit down would be gone. BUT its not just familiarity it is Atmosphere. Buy that in Market Place. Capture that on video. Well maybe.

So : What is onscreen is not real, it is highly dependent on your equipment. Environment whether pleasing or not is mitigated by an intangible atmosphere. How then do I find you “pleasing” or them “agreeable”. So far I have been approached by women with the favourite pick up line “I love your profile” or “What an interesting profile” and I admit to doing it myself. However there have been numerous instances where after an hour or even several I have remarked “I must look at your profile”. The killer ap is Social Interaction. It has to be.

“yes darling, undo the hooks at the back. Now feel my soft silk panties around my suspender belt…….” so says the 50 something fat blowsy housewife, in curlers, dressed in housecoat and slippers, fag hanging out of her mouth, frying chips,  giving phone sex.

Reality is what I imagine it to be. On a physical level “Look at that Jade necklace” I am colour blind with shades of green.  If I am in a bad mood a smile is seen as a grimace, a good mood the child that drops ice cream on my trousers “a scallywag” . In second life as in real life we have two personae. One public one private. Then we have Seren my nemesis bete noir and mentor. her public face in second life does not equate with her public face in real life. So I’m fucked. Or am I? Put Madame Haven down in somewhere like a real Soul Mods with her mates and she would act EXACTLY the same.

Behaviour is dependent on the environment which is ultimately dependent on social interaction. AND how I perceive it. I think the perception thingy goes a bit further in second life. You may be a half naked blob but above your head it says “Dude”.

Affirmation:  “May I see the holy today.”

Reflections:

1 – Love

Love is the most important aspect of our living in this world and in world beyond (I believe).  And with love comes holiness, if it is a pure love.  And what love is not pure unless it is chosen for base reasons?  We do imagine that love brings the holy, and we do imagine that that which is beyond us, in worlds beyond, is holier still.  We do not know this, but somehow our hearts tell this to us, and we believe (when we don’t let the skeptical mind interfere).

2 – Look with Loving Eyes

If we look out on the world with loving eyes, we will see the holy.  We will abstain from attack and anger, and we will be certain that our eyes see rightly.  We will not fall into depressed spirits, usually, and we will have the means to climb out of a depressed pit when we do so fall.  The joy that comes from love is genuine.

3 – We Can Have Good Days

We cannot expect never to have difficulties.  But Jesus says in A Course in Miracles that we do have the means to have good days.  If our day starts wrongly, we can start over.  And we can do so repeatedly.

4 – Charity

Be with us today to ensure a good day.  Remind us, when we forget, to look on all that we see with love.  And that includes the thoughts of our minds, the things that we do not say.  We need to have charitable views about everybody with whom we encounter, and if we do not feel this, then something is amiss, and we need to pray for greater understanding, to see the whole picture.  Be with us as we seek to make aright all of our relationships.  And may we always be forgiving, knowing that we are merely forgiving illusions, nothing real.

Prayer:

Dear Father/Mother,

May this day be truly a grand one for all whom I touch in any way.  May the people who read this blog be blessed.  Guide me in what I say.

It is a great blessing to know that we can have good days, and if the day turns bad, we can start anew.  Truly a great blessing.  It is reasurring to know that we are meant to have good days.  And when something doesn’t go well, it can be rectified.  Help me to remember this good news today.

In this essay, which is a revised version of a talk Scholes delivered at the 2001 NCTE conference in Baltimore, Scholes argues that teachers of English need to spend more time teaching students how to read more critically, which he defines as two related activities: 1. being able to accurately focus on the words, the language of the text and 2. understanding the author as outside the reader (as an other.) (166)

Scholes argues that this reading problem he sees as an educator is symptomatic of a larger problem of American culture: the inability of people to imagine the other – being able to listen to a person’s arguments and reasons without instantly critiquing or dismissing that argument. He contends that rhetoric depends on hearing the other, and a society that can’t understand perspectives other than their own cannot function as a true democracy.

Scholes believes that incorporating more literary criticism in the literature/English curriculum will address this reading problem becuase he believes criticism can model to students how to read and write for differences, how to interpret the other.  Scholes also notes that the task of imagining the other is rooted in rhetorical education: he cites McGuffey’s Reader (5th ed 1879) as explaining the purpose of reading as hearing the “ideas and feelings of the writer” (qtd. 167).

and all that mud, my dog just dragged in.

Does this space suit make me look fat?  It must.  Well I should say fatter.  I’m not a small girl.  I have pictures of the Michelin Man running through my head.  Then I look at Barbie next to me and wonder if she has ever had to look in the mirror and see herself looking so plump.  The mental image tickles me.  I call her Barbie because she is “that” girl.  The blond, perfect makeup, breasts that make you think twice about whether you truly like men, and legs that go on for days.  She isn’t a bad person, I just hate her on principle.  She got skinny, beautiful genes and I got fat genes, but great hair.  There was also the small fact that she spent time and energy at the gym.  I thought a lot about going to the gym and then dismissed the idea as not nearly as enjoyable as holding down my couch.

I digress.  This was the greatest day of my life.  We are circling Saturn as I write this.  The view is spectacular out the window of the Shuttle.  There was some controversy about whether I would be allowed to make this trip.  I was the winner of a Space Trip Lottery.  The “fat” issue was a problem.  Did they have a suit big enough? Lord, they acted as if I was 800 pounds.  Would I fit in the chair?  It’s not like I had to buy two airline tickets when I flew.  I showed them.  They did some tests and realized I was fit enough.  So for a few days I was officially an “astronaut”.

Saturn was brilliant.  Its gorgeous rings were glowing bright, oranges and yellows.  They melded into each other and you couldn’t tell where the colors edges stopped and new colors started.  I wanted to photography it, but knew I could never really capture its true essence.  I was going out there in a minute.  I was going to perch myself on the rings of Saturn and ponder life.  I was going to weigh nothing.

The “real” astronauts (who were not nearly as hot as they portrayed them in the movies) took us through the door into Outer Space.  They would be our guides.  Could you imagine the PR nightmare – “Astronaut Loses Fat Girl In Outer Space” or “Fat Girl Is Finally Weightless – Refuses To Return To Earth”? My astronaut, Frank was guiding me through the stars to Saturn.  I don’t that it can be explained, what it is like to be among the stars but still unable to reach out and grab one.  I wanted to put one in my pocket so I could sneak it back to Earth.  It would be my own magnificent lightning bug.

Here I was, floating next to one place I had dreamed of being my entire life.  I know it sounds ludicrous to dream of sitting on the rings of Saturn.  I had thought so for most of my life, but here I was.  I didn’t know if it was a strange stroke of luck, divine intervention or me never giving up on a dream regardless of how ludicrous it sounded, but I was going to do it.  I didn’t want Frank around to ruin my moment.  I asked him politely if I could have a moment alone with my planet.  I saw the glimmer of uncertainty flash in his eyes behind his space helmet.  He nodded, but I knew he was picturing the fat girl flying away again.

I hopped up on the edge of those burnished rings, which isn’t really hopping since your weightless.  I had to hold onto the edges or I would have floated right off the ring.  Damn! The one time being fat should have helped, but again I was cosmically screwed.  I giggled at my own stupid sense of humor.  Then I stared out into the vast black curtain of space.

It seemed plain stupid to ponder your life choices while up here.  It was even more pointless to ponder your dreams.  Wasn’t this quite possibly the greatest thing a person would experience in one’s life?  This is a story you tell and people respond with, “Shut, up? You did not! Seriously? Nooooo…!”  I would let them believe I was lying because really…they just responded with “Shut, up!”  Was I actually going to have an intelligent interaction with them after that.  They would not understand the gravity of the moment.  So instead I knew this would be a moment that I would treasure alone, in that secret part of my soul where feelings you’ve never told another hide.

So there I sat, dangling my moon boot covered feet over the edge of the rings of Saturn knowing I was enveloped in perfection and understanding the only thing required of me was to drink in the moment.

If you have any tips you swear by to keep yourself motivated I’d love to know about them!

-          Have a project buddy.  If you can find someone else as excited about making moustache key-rings as you are then you can pick each other up on the down days and keep each other energised with your useful and/or hilarious research

-          Mix your project types.  If you’re starting multiple projects try and be working on a mix of those that will take longer to finish (like more detailed making projects or events), those which require constant input but give constant results (skills learning, or for me the singing group),and those that will give you something back quickly (easy craft activity)

-          And on that note… Variety is the Spice of Life.  It’s not good to decide to start 4 separate making projects which all require time and commitment.  Knitting a scarf for your sister and sewing a cushion cover for your mum whilst beading a hand-made collar for your best mate is going to result in a pile of chores that you hate to look at – unless you have lots and lots of time to dedicate.  Choose projects that require different skill sets and give you a different process to work through.

-          Make it about you.  As you may know (particularly with the amount of blog and headspace this project has started taking over) one of my new ventures is learning to knit.  When I first thought about it I immediately thought of all those lovely hand-crafted and money saving gifts I could give to people – and was panicking about doing it all before I had even begun!  Now my first knitting project will be to make a woolly hat for myself.  That means I’ll stay motivated; because at the end of it all hopefully I’ll have a lovely woolly hat to wear!  It also takes the pressure off; I don’t have a birthday deadline and I don’t have to have that fixed grin moment as I desperately try and read my giftees face to work out whether the first-time-knitter creation is really their thing.

- Don’t forget to laugh!  It’s all meant to be fun right?  That’s why you started that knitting/crafting/writing/musical/self improvement project in the first place!  if you’re stuck in a rut go out and look at amazing examples of what you’re trying to make that already exist in the world… and cool, funny, interesting things that barely relate at all but make you smile.  I’m also a big fan of scanning the internet for amazing sculptures and artworks that exist – guerilla street art in particular.

These motions to action Made, the inactions and actions to lives laid, all in the matter of how many lives saved – and to the interaction of all cultures/(“races”) that we have today  -  it was born here – so this could be a Happy Holiday

In the celebration to the end of Racism

A journey still we are on

a memory back

The Greatest lesson my Dad ever taught me, was one which curtailed the leftover negativity – that which is racism – which has never yet been laid to rest

The lesson, my Dad told me, when somebody does something evil to you, you need to be sure to realize that a people did not do it to you, but that a person did it to you, so in turn he said, that if you hate someone for the evil they did, hate that person, and not the people (related to the evil done to you)

Yes, of course this is a paraphrase of what my Dad told me when I was just a child, maybe around 7 or 8. This I would say is the greatest lesson to date, that I have ever learned, though through many tragedies and some very sever victimization, I learned, not lessons, but the realities of human nature, and this lesson also helped me with that, so I never take out on others my frustration or anger – for the evil that other specific people have done to me.

This lesson also helped me to walk away from “race” riots that were forming at the high school I attended, it helped me not to get mad at innocent people – and to stay focused not so much on hate or revenge, but the human condition.

Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King – is my favorite person in the world – he did the most ever – in my view to contribute to a more civil world – and as I said, I am certain of all the others who contributed prior to his efforts, there were those who contributed during the time he contributed, and those of us now who contribute to this DREAM of civility – to end racism – so we partake.
