Apple’s presence as a favorite staple in the consumer market segment is accepted, expected and taken for granted. The corporate enterprise is another matter. I’ve been playing with the HTC G1 using the Google Android OS.  The phone has been fun – or I should more accurately say the applications have been fun.  It’s very easy to search and find some great (and horrible) applications right on the phone.  I like the scanner feature, although I find don’t use it so much.  I mostly use it to scan the little squares in Cyrket: http://www.cyrket.com/ (a web based market place) so I can easily download the applications I found.

The specific phone features I like include: its width, the sliding qwerty keyboard, GPS, direction sensing/gyroscope and miniSD card.

I’m being pretty stingy about what I like about it because I’m comparing it in my head to the imate PDA2 that I was using before this.  I felt the imate was getting too slow and I’d broken the screen for a second time ($$$$!!!), so I thought I would switch to a cheaper, fully supported phone – no one knows what an imate is! And since I despise Apple and all their proprietary stuff, the G1 was the only alternative (‘imate” is NOT an apple product!). One of the things that I liked about it was that I’d be able to easily access all my Google stuff: calendar, email, and contacts.  I was able to get to them all on the imate with a 3rd party program, so it was neat that I didn’t have to mess with that anymore.

The features of the G1 that are similar to the imate that I like include: wifi, bluetooth, phone length, SD card (the imate’s is not mini), speaker phone, navigation buttons, camera.

The things I miss about the imate: graffiti, it’s thinness, precise screen use (albiet with a stylus), camera (it worked better than the G1, although the picture quality is not that great), physical memo button (although I just found a program that will let me repurpose the G1’s camera button to what ever I want), navagation buttons (answer, hang up phone, navigation “wheel”, calendar), longer battery life, infared keyboard, and infared remote control.

I often get defensive when people are all: “wow, the iPhone/G1 can do this great thing!” And I say, “yeah, my 2003 imate could do that…”  This G1 has no personality to me.  It is just a phone. All of my other pda’s have had personality – NAMES.  I kind of miss that feeling.  I was so devastated when I broke Klaus’s screen for the SECOND time, but if I drop this thing it’s no big deal…

In other news, I’ve been using Google Voice for a couple months.  Outside of a few settings tweaking and an occasional need for rebooting of the mobile GV app, things have been going pretty well.  I’ve been waiting to cancel my unlimited txts from Tmobile to make sure everything comes through well.  In almost all cases they do. There have been two instances when I have had to reboot the GV app because the program has locked up.  I had also set up one of my Tmobile favorites as the google voice number that most often gets used by my phone. That’s helped cut down on my “anytime” minutes, meaning I can keep the cheapest data/phone package.   On the down side it takes quite a while for txts and calls to arrive/leave to/from my phone and in conversations there is a lag.    But I like being able to send/get txts from the internet and set special voicemails for special people!  I should see if there’s an application for windows mobile 2003…    Oh, and the voicemail transcription thing is sort of a waste – its rarly acurate enough for me to get the full message, although with one screen-button push the real message is immediatly played, so I don’t have to wait for the voicemail to answer and then give me menu options…

ANNNDDDD… I did something kind of stupid. I was trying to get some money out of Tmobile because I didn’t change one of my favorites to the google number fast enough and I got a big charge on my bill last month.  I thought I could talk them into it but… Man, I’m embarassed about this … I named the favorite “Google Voice” and the guy I was chatting with was all “you tried to switch it to Google Voice …?” ummm…. I thought – totally chagrined…  “yeah”.  His response was dissappointing, but a bit heartening at the same time.  I decided to come right out and ask him (I printed our chat out, so I’ve got it all exact!) “so, I have to change it?” and he responded “Google services are not supported with myFaves, and they should not be used.”  I know from past experience that cell phone companies are very careful and sticklers for leagal-ese, so if it was stricktly prohibited, then he would have said “will not be supported…” instead, he said “should not be used” which is clearly not “no, we’ll charge you regular for it” …  So, I interpreted that to mean that basically they can’t do anything about it if I leave it and I’ll still get them for free. So, I’m gonna keep it there for a while and see what happens. (I didn’t get a refund, though.)

But what if I can’t keep it?  The Tmobile coverage is a little bit less than what I got from AT&T, but they acknowledge my educator status and give me a 15% discount… or I could hack the G1 and go to another phone company…  So, I’ve been thinking about switching back to the imate.  I have to remind myself that there were other problems with that, besides breaking it twice!  I had to sync through GooSync to get all my google stuff in the phone (on the plus side, I bought a lifetime membership, so it’s still good!), the A2DP bluetooth headset I had wasn’t *completely* supported by the software (controling the media player AND answering calls – it’d play music and change the volume, but I couldn’t change the songs. The headset works perfectly with the G1, tho!), fewer free applications, harder to develop applications (not that I’ve made any for the android yet…), no GPS (although I believe there were programs I could have bought that would have made it GPS-ish), no sync capability with windows mobile device center (I know, I know, I got vista… O.o) so the documents that I made on Klaus would not sync with the files on my new PC desktop – I had to run the old PC and then email the docs to myself (using google docs through the internet SUCKED then), and all the programs had to run on windows mobile 2003, which was already pretty dated when I got the phone in 2006.

Sometimes I daydream about super-hacking the imate – wiping its hard drive and installing a new camera and a laser beam or something crazy like that. But I do think I will try to fix the screen myself this time (seen some for $30 online!) and just have it handy.

One of the scariest unknown technology risks of this decade is the issue of radiation from cell phones. There’s still an open question about whether long term exposure to these mobile devices will cause damage or disease to human beings.

The Environmental Working Group has a comprehensive new study that surveys the scientific research on cell phone heath risks and provides radiation data for most of the current cell phones in use. Here’s how the EWG explained the mission of its study:

We at Environmental Working Group are still using our cell phones, but we also believe that until scientists know much more about cell phone radiation, it’s smart for consumers to buy phones with the lowest emissions. The U.S. government ought to require cell phone companies to label their products’ radiation output so that consumers can do the numbers at the point of sale. It doesn’t, so EWG has created this user-friendly interactive online guide to cell phone emissions, covering over 1,000 phones currently on the market.

The EWG study looks at all mobile phones, but since smart phones are becoming a standard tool for businesses and IT professionals, I’ve drilled down and looked at the list from a smart phone perspective. I’ve broken out the 10 smart phones that produce the most radiation, the 10 that product the least amount of radiation, and a list of the radiation ratings of some of the most popular smart phones that did not make either of those two lists.

When you look at these lists, keep in mind that the EWG has also included some older models that are no longer being sold but are still used by many workers and consumers. Also note that “W/kg” stands for watts per kilogram, a measurement for power density.

The 10 smart phones with the highest radiation

2. Blackberry Curve 8330 (1.54 W/kg)
3. Palm Treo 600 (1.53 W/kg)

The T-Mobile MyTouch 3G, an HTC smart phone powered by Google Android that debuted to lots of fanfare this summer, topped the list of the worst radiation offenders. However, other popular smart phones dominated the list as well, especially BlackBerries and Treos. The BlackBerry Curve, the best-selling smart phone on the market in 2009, was a close second on the list, and it was joined in the top 10 by its cousins, the BlackBerry Pearl and the BlackBerry Bold.

Nokia, with five models in this top 10, and Samsung with three, were clearly the winners in terms of smart phones that emit the least amount of radiation. It’s also interesting to note that although both of these companies produce dozens of different models, neither of them had a single model that made the list of the worst radiation offenders. The surprising member of the low-radiation club was the BlackBerry Storm (RIM’s first touch screen device) since so many of the other popular BlackBerries were on the high-emitters list.

If there’s another phone you’d like to look up, here is the full list. Also, when seriously evaluating any smart phone on any of these lists, make sure you click through and look at the EWG page with the details of the phone’s radiation emissions using different connections and doing different activities. The number listed is the maximum radiation rating, but it can be deceiving in some cases until you look at the whole picture.

For example, the iPhone 3GS has a rating of 1.19 W/kg, which is a middle-of-the-pack rating. However, 1.19 is its maximum radiation level, which only happens when it is connected in UMTS 1900MHz mode. In its other four modes, it averages 0.63 W/kg, which is more consistent with the lower tier of radiation emitters.

Safety tips

As part of the report, the EWG also provided safety tips for cell phone users who are concerned about radiation. Here is a quick list of the tips. You can click through to the original list for more detail on each of the items.

4. Hold phone away from your body
5. Choose texting over talking
6. Poor signal? Stay off the phone

IT professionals might consider distributing this PDF to employees who use company cell phones or posting it on the corporate intranet. Of course, you should consult senior management and your legal department before distributing something like this since it involves employee health.

Bottom line

While there isn’t conclusive scientific evidence proving that cell phones cause illnesses or diseases in humans, the EWG report does point to research that has shown links between prolonged cell phone use and  brain cancer, salivary gland tumors, migraines and vertigo, and decreased male sperm count (from carrying a cell phone in the pocket).

A lot more research still needs to be done, but in the meantime it makes sense for mobile manufacturers to limit cell phone radiation whenever possible and for users to be aware of which phones produce the most radiation so that they can take steps to limit radiation exposure as a precautionary step.

At a personal level, I was hoping that the announcement of the 3G auctions in the newspaper would enable me to justify the purchase of a new handset – may be one of the fancy ones that supports a number of applications. Unfortunately, it is now postponed at-least by 6 months.

However, over the last 3 months, when I have been on the look out for a good 3G phone, I realized that my taste in phones has changed dramatically!

Way back in 1995, when I was with a GSM operator and the mobile phone, as well as, the use of the phone were at no cost to me, I had a Siemens S3 phone. The phone had a very easy to use menu and life was not yet complicated in terms of the variety of ring tones that people had.

Later on I changed to a Motorola 7500. This was a phone into which a Credit-card sized SIM should be slided in from below. Bulky but it had better talktime. Since my usage pattern (it was still free of charge for me) had gone up, I needed a phone with better battery. It also had a flip-cover over the dialpad.

In 2000, I quit the job with the GSM operator, changed city and got into a new job. Now, for the first time, I had to pay for a mobile phone and pay for its use too!  So, I went for an entry-level phone – Nokia 3100. The phone was good except that everyone seemed to have the same phone and it looked like whenever a phone rang, 3 or 4 persons would frisk themselves, produce it from the secret location it had been stashed and verify if it was their phone that was ringing. It was too common.

So finally, I decided to change to a phone that would be fanciful. I zeroed in on the Sony-Ericsson T610. This was partly because of the fact that the showroom  was close to my house and the nice emarald eye the phone had at the back. It also had video and had some metallic silver color which made me feel that the phone is good. The phone also came with a synchronization mechanism between the address book on my laptop and that on my mobile. I also went ahead and bought a Blue-tooth handsfree for the phone. I was very happy till I noticed the drawbacks of the phone. The mini-joystick control was not very effective.

The next phone was an International winner! Some friends of ours who were employed with Motorola got a special deal and decided to help us get the Moto  Razr! The price was unbeatable and the phone was very attractive. So, I went ahead and bought the phone. I liked the phone despite the fact that it used to hang on occasions and would have continued using it but for the fact that my mom, who found the large  numbers (yes, she dials by numbers!) displayed on the screen to be helpful for her old eyes. I decided to change to a new phone and give her the Razr.

So here I am lugging this huge piece of phone once again – cursing everytime the OS crashes or the beeper goes off non-stop or the stylus is lost (the stylus does not match any popular model and hence, I struggle for 3 months until someone on ebay offers the stylus!). And, what is worse – it does not support 3G! Meet the Imate Kjam!

Now, I am desperate for a change.  But – I am not able to make up my mind whether I want a phone that is good for productivity or good for applications. I want touchscreen phone if applications is priority – iPhone, Blackberry Storm and HTC are the candidates. I need roaming as I use my phone extensively during my international travel. iPhone and Blackberry come in network locked condition – which leaves out HTC; but HTC is Windows based which takes me back to the unstable phone problem…

Not able to make up my mind!

Recently we have a wave of Apple iPhone users send in their hardware for repair.  Their iPhone stopped working totally after owners mistakenly upgrade the software.

I was reading a story in a local magazine the other day, I forced myself because I’m interested, but at first glance it was not very insightful in my humble opinion. I get so tied up trying to make the future happen that sometimes I don’t sit back and think about it in more depth and I should.

There has been a lot of talk about the Semantic Web and about sharing data on the web with lots of applications and people, lots of talk about collaborating with other people and for sure that is happening. I use Friendfeed, I’m active on Facebook, sometimes Flickr, Buzznet, LinkedIn and loads more. Twitter is the only one I really use on my Blackberry, which doesn’t suit many of the social networking applications very well.

The problem I have with putting information on web sites such as Gmail and others is can I rely on it being there forever? I love the idea of being able to access everything anywhere anytime and A3 (cubed) is one of my mantras, but ignoring security I still have fears over losing access to my data, like when recently Mucaah.com, a web site in the Netherlands where I was building a fan base disappeared overnight.

But anyway, looking to the future, the big next thing for me is LBS or Location Based Services and on any device, any time. It is about interacting with your environment and your social network in real places in real time. Sure a lot of people including myself spend a lot of time at desktops, but I plan to do much more of my computing, especially social computing at a mobile level.

I have owned a myriad of devices and still have many of them including Palm’s, A Casio Zoomer, Symbol’s, iPaq’s, iMate as well as other Smartphones from a variety of brands. I worked hard to help bring these products into mainstream and not just as clever phones but as tools to enhance the way people react in this world. To that end in the beginning of this century I wrote Unleashing the Road Warrior, Master Your Palm and master Your Pocket PC. All of these were about maximising the potential of these devices and the communications to help you work and play smarter rather than harder, another personal mantra. I don’t mean you shouldn’t play hard, but that it shouldn’t be hard work.

Hopefully my next one, whether it’s a new Blackberry, iPhone, Xperia or something else, will have a GPS chip in it and a variety of applications that will enable my mobile world. I have some major activities in mind to help develop this area of computing and turn it into a reality.

So looking a few years into the future, what is my vision? I could write a book, but like my last ones they date very quickly, so this blog will have to do. The biggest impact of these technologies will be social, after all people do business with people, they have relationships with people and those relationships and networks have far more power when they are spatially enabled.

Over the last few years applications like Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, Buzznet, Flickr, Twitter and more have been the most popular development in computing or social computing at least and people are loving it, but whilst many of these applications are now able to be used in a mobile environment (for example I use Twitter on my phone), the don’t have a spatial component yet.

So lets have a brief look into the near future. In one of my previous blogs I described a typical day for me on the Internet. Now lets have a bit of a look at what that same day might look like in 2013.

I wake up to the sound of my current favourite song which is being played on my iPhone V6 which is in the dock of my alarm clock. Note this is the latest model, but they have been around since 2008. I get up and go into the bathroom, taking my iPhone with me and put it into my bathroom dock which has water resistant wiring so that it doesn’t corrode from the steam of my hot shower.

While I was asleep my iPhone connected to iTunes, not through Vodafone who are still greedy in their data prices but wirelessly to my wireless router which connects to my fibre-optic internet connection with its guaranteed minimum 100Mbps connection and updated all my favourite podcasts in a matter of 30 seconds.

It automatically starts playing the podcasts in order of preference while I shower and I catch up with the latest in tech news from Channelflip and Geekbrief.

As I have breakfast I plug my iPhone into the projector pod and catch up with the latest personalised news which is displayed on the dining room wall and catch up with the things I am interested in.

I’m going to stop here for now, because it’s obvious that this is going to be longer than I intended and if I don’t post it now it will never finish or will become a book. So RSS or bookmark this blog if this is of interest to you:)
