Você conhece James Cameron por seus grandes filmes, como Titanic (que arrebatou 11 estatuetas) e Terminator. Histórias totalmente diferentes mas com a grandeza dos efeitos especiais em comum. Desde 2007 ouvimos rumores sobre seu novo filme, Avatar, que agora tem data certa de estréia,18 de Dezembro de 2009 e pôster oficial, que você vê aí em cima.

O que sabemos até agora é que história se passará em um futuro em que a humanidade já conhece outros planetas e civilizações. Acompanharemos Jake, um veterano de guerra paraplégico que é enviado para o planeta Pandora, lar dos Na’vi, uma raça humanóide de quase três metros de altura, pele azulada e rabo, com sua própria língua e cultura. Não temos mais detalhes e o trailer que você vê abaixo também não ajuda muito nesse sentido.

A grande expectativa criada em torno desse filme se deve ao segredo criado  (nada vaza!) e a alta tecnologia usada. Cameron gravou por três meses com atores reais (inclusive Sigourney Weaver, a eterna Ripley, de Alien e Sam Worthington, do novo Terminator Salvation) e o restante do filme explora diversos recursos tecnológicos desde efeitos digitais até a exploração extrema de imagens em 3D. Quem esteve na Comic Con deste ano(e teve sorte de pegar um lugar no painel) pode ver 25 minutos de imagens e impressionantes cenas em 3D.

Segundo o site oficial do filme também poderemos desfrutar dessas imagens, pois no dia 21 de Agosto será exibido gratuitamente em todas as salas IMAX 3D um vídeo de 15 minutos. Nesta data também será lançado o trailer do jogo que a Ubisoft está preparando para o filme, com o nome Avatar: The Game, e a Mattel revelará os action figures dos personagens humanos e dos aliens Na’vi. O trailer do filme estará disponível também na internet em 2D e 3D. Detalhes de como serão distribuídos os ingressos ainda não foram divulgados, mas assim que tivermos essas informações atualizo este post.

Bah! Humbug! I must admit I am a bit of Scrooge when it comes to Xmas. However post bonfire night I am prepared to accept it is that time of year once again. So before the chaos begins here’s a taster of what Manchester will have to offer in terms of festive cheer.

I was reminded about something from my childhood when I went to the IMAX Theatre at the Metreon complex in San Francisco last night to watch Disney’s newly released ” A Christmas Carol.”   I was reminded about the magic of the movies and its ability to transport me to a wonderful place of imagination and adventure.

The animation was  digitally produced and had such a realism , especially when experienced in 3-D and on an IMAX screen.   The child-like wonderment came out from deep in my being and for the duration of the film I was lost in it.

I know the Charles Dickens classic by heart. I  read the book,  seen various film versions and stage productions of it.  However,  Disney has managed to reinvent it in such way to bring freshness and meaning,  in only the way that Disney does it.  The film brought me into the spirit of the season and took away every ounce of ” scroogeness ” I had left by the time the closing credits rolled.

Jim Carrey played Scrooge. He, not only brought the voice to the character, but also through computer digital magic his brought the very mannerisms to all of Scrooges’ ages of his life.  He also played several other characters in the film.  Carrey is a genius and I believe one of the best actors of our time.

The richness and details of animation were beyond beautiful. It was awe inspiring.  It was art in motion.  I think Mr. Dickens would have been pleased.

Everyone needs to see this movie.  You need to see it on an IMAX screen and in 3-D.  Enjoy the experience.  Bring the whole family.  Bring some cheer into your life.  This classic will remind you about what is truly important in life.

Master Image es una empresa coreana que tiene la patente de su sistema de polarización circular desde hace bastante tiempo, pero que por la potencia de sus competidores (Real D en EE.UU. y Dolby y XpanD en el resto del mundo), ha dejado su cuota de mercado en cifras marginales.

The classic English novella written by Charles Dickens has once again been adapted into a film, this time by veteran director Robert Zemeckis.

A Christmas Carol follows the tale of Ebenezer Scrooge, a mean, old man, who frowns upon the less fortunate and who loathes the Christmas holiday. On Christmas Eve night, Mr. Scrooge is visited by a ghost of an old friend, who warns him of three more visiting specters: the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present, and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. The spirits take Mr. Scrooge on a journey to find out who he really is.

If you look back on Zemeckis’s previous entries into the world of motion capture and 3D, and compare them to A Christmas Carol, you can see how far the technology has progressed. Simply put: the film looks beautiful. There are instances where you think a character is real instead of computer generated; the same goes for the scenery. Sadly, there are some inconsistencies in this department: sometimes the animation looks outstanding and sometimes it looks quite spotty. Just like the recent re-release of the Toy Story films in 3D, the film’s use of the technology is subtle in some places and not so subtle in others. There are of course sequences where images pop out at the audience, but it makes the film even more enjoyable.

If you are expecting a comedy, you are out of luck. While humor does rear its head in the film, it is overall far more dark and grim. There are some images that could be disturbing to young children and there some depressing scenes. While I love dark and somber films, parents may want to see this before taking their little ones. Of the comedy that is present, it is quite humorous and well presented. However, there were instances when the audience I saw the film with laughed at inappropriate moments and that is a fault against the film; either the filmmakers’ deliberately added comedy where it should not have been present or they just screwed up.

A Christmas Carol tackles the theme of greed and what it can do to people: it can destroy relationships, strain friendships, and even make the person unbearable to be around. While the film explored this theme, I could not help but think of the current political debate occurring in America and how it is quite a coincidence that the film was released at the height of it. This is a testament to how Dickens’s tale is still completely relevant even in the 21^st century.

The cast is absolutely great. Jim Carrey stars as Ebenezer Scrooge, the ghosts of Christ Past, Present, and Christmas Yet to Come, and the younger versions of Scrooge. This is the second film where he has done voice work and he has proven himself capable of voice acting. You can see Carrey’s resemblance in every character he portrays and he does not look weird like Tom Hanks does in Zemeckis’s The Polar Express. The same goes for Gary Oldman, who was cast as Bob Cratchit, Marley, and Tiny Tim. Oldman too does a great job with the voice work and it is quite surprising that he voiced a little boy. Other cast members include Bob Hoskins, Cary Elwes, Robin Wright Penn, and Colin Firth, though they have minor roles.

Despite minor flaws, A Christmas Carol is a solid film. Will it get you in the holiday spirit? Of course not; it is a grim story and it is only November.

Mientras comíamos y recorríamos el parque pudimos ver que este  lugar cuenta con algunos jardines temáticos que son utilizados por los franceses como áreas de juego o de esparcimiento los mas representativos son el Jardín de Bambú, el Jardín de Dunas, el Jardín de los Espejos y el Jardín del Dragón. Uno de los edificios más representativos de este parque sin lugar a duda es la Géoda, que es una esfera gigante de 36 metros de diámetro cubierta de placas triangulares de acero inoxidable, que guarda en su interior la sala de cine más frecuentada de Francia, con una pantalla gigante hemisférica para pasar filmes en gran formato como el IMAX.

A few days ago, a school field trip found me meandering about the California Science Center with a group of about 15 other students as a part of my “Cinema in the Wild” course.  On a weekday morning before noon, no one goes to the California Science center except for busloads of small, buddy-systemed children, most in uniform, herded like sheep into the wide foyer of the museum.  I’m not sure where I thought the children were headed, but as it turned out, they were being ushered right into the same theater as I was: the 10:30am screening of “Under the Sea 3D” at the IMAX theater.

“Under the Sea 3D” was released in February 2009, mainly aimed at children, to provide an immersive (literally) experience of ocean life.  The idea is that children will sit down– legs swinging in their seats excitedly–throw on their 3D glasses, and be plunged into an educational journey with narrator Jim Carrey.

While reeling them in with images of turtles snapping, sharks swimming right past their faces, and sea lions popping off the screen to kiss them on the forehead, Jim will also give them a lesson about the importance of conservation and caring for our fragile environment.  They’ll take this in, surprised to learn that we–humans!–could be the reason for the death of cute, frolicking fish and pretty sea horses.  They’ll leave the theater a little scared, but aware of the responsibility we have to our planet.

Not quite.  I, for one, was not expecting a Thursday morning spent with what felt like hundreds of thousands of 3rd graders.  Nor did I expect a twenty minute line at the ladies’ room surrounded by pigtailed 9-year-olds, but that’s a different blog post. While the children were admittedly cute in their starched uniforms, unable to touch their feet to the ground, 3D glasses gigantic on their tiny faces, I was also starting to realize that the next 45 minutes would not simply be educational–it would be loud.

I’m not sure I heard Jim Carrey speak at all.  The lights went down, the credits started rolling, and the children started to chatter, awestruck by the names and titles that seemed to float right in front of our faces.  Once we took the dive into the depths of the ocean, all hell broke loose– there were screams as sharks brushed past, and as giant squid darted out to catch their prey.  There was jumping up and down, there were little hands grabbing at the fish and reaching out to touch the coral reefs.  There were excited squeals of “Sea lion!  Sea lion!” only to be indignantly corrected with, “That’s a seal, Manuel.“  Children spilled out into aisles, stood on chairs, clutched each other, and nearly tumbled into the next row in their efforts to get closer to the animals.

While the antics were overwhelming at first, we quickly realized that embracing the situation was the only means of survival.  And after a few minutes under the sea, we started reaching out to see if we could catch the fish, too.  We’ve all seen movies that were made for kids and can appreciate them–but seeing them in a theater with children is something that is a rare opportunity for many of us (and for me, something I typically try to avoid). It became so much more about seeing their reactions– the delight, the wonder and amazement, the terror at times– and much less about what the film overtly had to say about the state of our planet and the danger it’s in.

Perhaps no one walked away with a greater understanding of global warming or the endangerment of so many species of plants and animals.  But the reminder of childhood and the delight of discovery is a powerful thing, and can often be more memorable than the facts alone.  Seeing the depths of the ocean, close enough for us to touch, was a lively experience–but seeing the reaction of a theater full of 3rd graders was what really made it come alive.

Aside from New Moon, I had a double dose of movie last week with Disney’s A Christmas Carol directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Jim Carrey.

The movie is based from a classic Charles Dickens book about the infamous penny-pincher Ebenezer Scrooge who spends his days making money and never cared to enjoy anything else in life.

It was last Saturday afternoon when A Christmas Carol premiered in Mall of Asia’s IMAX Theater. Like the kid that I am, I was pretty excited for the IMAX experience since it was my first time to catch a full film in IMAX ever (yuh, I know I’m such a loser… the only time I was able to “experience” IMAX was in HK Disneyland–and it wasn’t even a full movie).

Anyway, I arrived at the venue just in time for the cocktails. In spite of the disappointing serving of food from Chowking (with one siomai each person), the event was pretty much amazing. It had free glitter tattoo and photo-taking going on. SM also had some chorale singers to fill the air with Christmas carol.

I loved the way Disney perfectly picked Jim Carrey to be Ebenezer. It was such a splendid comical execution, truly something both the kids and oldies will enjoy. I love how the 3 ghosts carried totally different personalities (and I personally hate the eerie Ghost of Christmas Future). Overall, A Christmas Carol is a movie that you can watch with your family on a typical Sunday afternoon.

Opening on Nov. 25 in regular theaters across the Philippines, as well as in Digital 3D cinemas and in IMAX 3D in SM Mall of Asia and SM North EDSA.

Playboy had an exclusive interview about James Cameron and how this movie has been taking up all his time. Tonight, on 60 Minutes there was an interview with James Cameron, similar to the Playboy interview, in which he describes the 4-year journey and what his movie attempts to bring to moviegoers.

For James Cameron, it is extremely hard to top the the success of his last film, “Titatic.” This movie made well over a billion dollars and still remains the most profitable movie of all time. AVATAR, which cost roughly $400 million to make, is gonna take some time to make money above and beyond production costs, but I have a feeling….this movie could start making money in roughly two weeks.

Along with the movie, James Cameron worked exclusively on Avatar, the video game, which should hit stores on December 1st. This Ubisoft produced game (same folks that brought you Halo) takes you on a first-person adventure two-years prior to the time the movie takes place. I’ve seen the game trailers and it looks spectacular! I can’t wait to see it on my HDTV.

If you wondering when the movie will hit….mark your calendars for Dec 18th. I am curious to hear your thoughts and predictions on the success of this movie. I am already predicting Oscars for Best Visual Effects, Sound Mixing & Editing, Cinematography, and Art Direction. We’ll see how I do when March rolls around.

Se ha comentado ya la duración definitiva de la película de James Cameron, AVATAR, que se estrena el ya muy cercano 18 de Diciembre.
Se sabía que no superaría los 170 minutos, ya que es el límite físico de los Rolling Loops del cine IMAX (hay compromiso de Cameron de estrenar en IMAX), parece estar cifrado en 85 minutos, pero parece que serán 150 minutos la duración definitiva.
Os aseguro que si la ponen en las salas IMAX 3D de Madrid y Barcelona, se hinchan a vender entradas.
Yo compraré seguro alguna entrada si se estrena en IMAX 3D, aunque es de esas películas, que al menos veré 2 veces (quizás hasta 4 veces – una en cada sistema 3D).

3 – sala Dolby en algún Balañá de Barcelona
4 – Albéniz Plaça en Real D en Girona (aunque sea sala 4K, el 3D será a 2K)
