De acordo com o Terra (e confirmado na reprodução abaixo) o diretor global Boninho anunciou via Twitter que o produtor de cinema Herbert Richers morreu na noite dessa quinta-feira [19.11.2009]. Hebert Richers comandava o famoso estúdio de dublagem localizado na Rua Conde de Bonfim, na Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, a grande referência em dublagem no cinema brasileiro há décadas:

“Hoje se foi uma parte da história da TV brasileira. Nos deixou Herbert Richers, considerado o dono do melhor estúdio de dublagem do mundo”, disse ele.

Herbert Richers nasceu em Araraquara, interior de São Paulo, em 11 de março de 1923, mas passou grande parte da sua vida no Rio de Janeiro. Em 1950, ele fundou na cidade a distribuidora de filmes Herbert Richers S.A, que depois virou uma das pioneiras no ramo da dublagem no Brasil.

Pouco tempo depois, ela começou modestamente a produzir e distribuir longas, como a comédia Sai de Baixo (1956). I didn’t mean to, but I now have Karmic on my external drive for my laptop, Windows on its internal drive, and my server up running Karmic also.

Here is what happened:  I watched one of the myriad Downfall parodies, and that made me curious to see the rest of the movie in its original context.  I went out and rented a copy, and if you haven’t seen it I’d recommend it highly.

Bruno Ganz does a very engaging job of playing Hitler, even having gone so far as spending time with people with Parkinson’s to better play the part.  I don’t know how exactly the events in the Führerbunker were portrayed, but Traudl Junge was there as was Rochus Misch, the radio operator in the movie.  Alexandra Maria Lara didn’t quite steal the show in her part as Junge, but it was close.  If you have a weak stomach, you’re going to have a hard time with this one, but if you can watch this one and not be disturbed then you’ve probably got issues to deal with.

Getting on with it, after having watched the movie I read the IMDB page on it (linked above) to see who was who and read up a little on each.  I was about to launch Songbird when I noticed that the sound wasn’t working properly.  Needless to say, I pushed the Wrong Button in some part of my attempt to fix it and mangled the Ubuntu installation I was using.  After a considerable fight with a laptop that only intermittently recognizes its internal optical drive and doesn’t care to boot from anything USB I got it mostly sorted out, although I am actively considering its replacement.

Needless to say, I still haven’t gotten around to the original task to reading up on historical figures involved in the Battle of Berlin, but I’ve discovered that Karmic works well indeed.  I had read some reports of some people having some hardware problems, but it works fine for me.  Even little things like the extra buttons on the mouse working out of the box, which previously required downloading a manager program.

In the end I’d recommend both, one for a reminder of how bad things can get when people stop acting rationally, and the other as a viable alternative to Windows.  Yes, this is probably the strangest review I’ve ever written.

Reality Bites (1994). Hea film ja köige coolim grupitants üldse

Internet se ha convertido con el paso del tiempo en la herramienta por excelencia para la comunicación en todos sus aspectos. Las relaciones interpersonales han encontrado en el ciberespacio la posibilidad de instalarse en él en las denominadas redes sociales. Millones de usuarios a nivel mundial han sido atraídos a ellas y las han incorporado en sus vidas de manera tal que las visitas a estos sitios se repiten varias veces al día y son el punto de encuentro para todo tipo de actividades.
Las nuevas tecnologías que lo permiten se basan en aplicaciones que permiten el uso común en un único sitio con protocolos informáticos como el correo electrónico o la mensajería instantánea, o aplicaciones que permiten la subida y la descarga de fotografías, es decir que lo que se permite principalmente es el intercambio de información de forma eficaz e inmediata que facilite la comunicación y la interactividad entre las personas.
La primera red social de Internet fue www.sixdegrees.com, actualmente inactiva. Surgió en 1997 y permitía al usuario crear su perfil, tener una lista de amigos y de amigos de esos amigos. Esta red se basa en la teoría homónima propuesta inicialmente en 1929 por el escritor húngaro Frigyes Karinthy en un cuento llamado Chains. Esta teoría lo que intenta es probar que cualquier persona en el mundo puede estar conectada con cualquier otra mediante una cadena de conocidos que implica a 5 intermediarios, es decir ambas personas estarían conectadas mediante seis enlaces y eso haría posible que la cadena de conocidos se convierta en la población del mundo.

Según esta teoría, cada persona conoce de media, entre amigos, familiares y compañeros de trabajo a unas 100 personas. Si cada uno de esos conocidos cercanos se relaciona con otras 100 personas, cualquier individuo puede pasar una determinada información a 10.000 personas con un solo mensaje tan sólo pidiendo a un amigo que lo pase a sus amigos. Si esos 10.000 conocen a otros 100 la red ya se ampliaría a 1.000.000 de personas conectadas en un tercer nivel, a 100.000.000 en un cuarto nivel, a 10.000.000.000 en un quinto nivel y a 1.000.000.000.000 en un sexto nivel.

En la década de los 50 el Instituto Tecnológico de Massachusetts y Manfred Kochen de IBM intentaron demostrarlo matemáticamente pero no quedaron del todo satisfechos. En 1967 un psicólogo estadounidense, Stanley Milgram, intentó nuevamente problarlo con un experimento que denominó “El problema del pequeño mundo”. La investigación consistió en hacer que varias personas del oeste de Estados Unidos enviaran postales a algún extraño en Massachusetts. Los emisores solo conocían el nombre, algunos datos y su localización aproximada del destinatario y debían hacer llegar la correspondencia entregándosela en mano a un amigo, aquel que realmente tuviera mayores posibilidades de llegar hasta el sujeto final. Todos pensaban que la cadena de intermediarios sería centenaria, pero en un tercio de los casos (y solo esto es lo que hace que muchos desconfíen) las postales llegaron tan solo entre 5 y 7 intermediarios y fue entonces cuando se le dio el nombre de ‘Seis grados de separación’.
Ya en los 90 la teoría fue llevada al teatro y en 1993 se estrenaba una película protagonizada por Will Smith y Donald Sutherland con su nombre aunque el argumento difiere de la teoría. También hubo una serie para la televisión realizada en 2007 por J.J. Abrams, el creador de Perdidos que no consiguió cautivar a la audiencia y dejó de emitirse tras el cuarto capítulo con la promesa de que volvería. La idea se convirtió en cultura popular a raíz un juego para ordenador que se localizaba en el sitio web de la Universidad de Virginia, su creador Brett C. Tjaden utilizó la web Internet Movie Database (IMDb) para documentar las diferentes conexiones que se iban realizando entre los diferentes actores; en 1996 la revista Time lo posicionó entre los diez mejores sitios web del año.

En la actualidad gracias a las nuevas tecnologías y principalmente a Internet la teoría parece más fácil de ser comprobada.
En 2001 aparecieron otras redes como BlackPlanet o MiGente que permitían crear redes de amistad o profesionales dentro de la propia red social. Actualmente las que se quedan con la mayoría de usuarios son Hi5, MySpace y Facebook. En esta última, existen cientos de grupos y páginas que incluyen en su nombre alguna variante. Pero un grupo en concreto se denomina “Six degrees of Separation – The LARGEST Group On Facebook” que cuenta con 5.606.800 miembros, lo que podría llevarnos a pensar que la teoría está muy difundida y que la gente está dispuesta a demostrarla, o por lo menos que tienen la esperanza que sea verdad; son cientos los blogs, vídeos y entradas en wikipedia que muestran las relaciones que personas anónimas demuestran tener en un sexto grado con algún famoso. No creo que fuera la idea original de la teoría, pero si ello ayuda a comprobarla, bienvenido sea.

Morena Baccarin has really hit the big time in the new television re-make of the 1983 science fiction series called “V”which recently premiered on ABC.   

The premise of the show for those of you who may not have seen the show is about a race of aliens who suddenly visit earth in 29 gigantic spaceships claiming to come in peace…their tagline is.…”We are of peace. Always.”  (Yeah, right!)

Morena Baccarin, a 30 year-old Brazilian born New Yorker, who has starred in a variety of programs such as Firefly and Serenity as “Inara” and a Stargate SG-1 alum, as “Adria” is now playing “Anna,” the supreme commander of the alien race currently hovering over all the major cities of the planet earth.  

Sporting a brand new haircut, remnicient of Audrey Hepburn and Halle Berry and probably being blessed by every hair salon across the country, “V” has done wonders for ABC ratings with 14.3 million viewers among adults 18-49 on the night of the premiere, on November 3, 2009, easily the best numbers for any new show this season.

 “V” will air in two parts, with four episodes before the holidays, and the remainder in 2010 right after the Olympics are over.  During this hiatus, you can catch Morena Baccarin in the upcoming big screen drama “Stolen Lives,” alongside Josh Lucas and “Mad Men’s” John Hamm.

Ükspäev kui Tartust bussiga koju sõitsin, siis kasutasin aega kasulikult ja vaatasin ära filmi, mis juba tükk aega vaatamist ootas. Paraku ei suuda ma meenutada, miks ma selle filmi üldse välja olin valinud ja endale hankinud. Aga noh kuivörd ta olemas oli, siis vaatasin ikka ära.

Niisiis The Believer (imdb, wiki). Film põhneb tõestisündinud lool (Dan Burros), mille peaosas on juut, kes on neo-nats ehk juudivihkaja. Ilmselgelt pole sellise kombinatsiooniga inimesi just palju. Samas ei saagi päris löpuni aru, kas Dannyl (see peaosa mees) on ainult poose selline, et olen nats ja vihkan juute vöi ta ikkagi päriselt vihkabki juute. Arvestades filmi löppu, mida ma siinkohal vist ikkagi päriselt ära rääkima ei hakka, siis ta vist sügaval südames ei vihanud juute. Juured on juured.

Leidsin guugeldades ka ühe hea filmiarvustuse, mis vötab filmi hästi kokku – The Film Journal: The Believer. Tundub, et Danny põlgas juute nende arguse pärast, just sellepärast, et nad ei julenud vastu hakata – nad lihtsalt alistusid. Pidevalt ja siiani on nende ainsaks enesekaitseks, et nad on “chosen nation“. Ausalt, ma ei vihka inimesi nende päritolu või valikute pärast, proovin olla tolerantne, aga pidev ülemaailmne halamine teemal, mis nende rahvaga tehti 65-70 aastat tagasi hakkab pehmelt öeldes tüütuks muutuma. Üks asi selles filmis oli küll lahe – see kui Danny luges toorat heebrea keeles, see kölas lihtsalt nii ilusasti.

The problem we face:

Every year a growing number of movies are adapted into musicals against their will, and often for little or no profit.  With more and more Broadway producers scouring the pages of IMDB in the hopes of creating something that will stand up to the least common standard of critical and commercial success, one can’t help but wonder if Whoopi Goldberg will reprise her role in the musical version of Jumpin’ Jack Flash.

It is not a new idea, or even a bad one, to assume that a successful film could be turned into a successful musical.  That crafty producer’s trick of avoiding originality until it is absolutely necessary is as old as commerce itself, and even the earliest Hollywood blockbusters were subsequently put up on Broadway and visa versa, but hasn’t the standard fallen too low when theatre goers are being subjected to Xanadu all over again?  It’s true that a few gems have emerged from the reductive formula.  The Billy Elliot musical was good.  Of course, it was adapted from a great movie, and one that was made up largely of dance sequences.  If the stage versions of Saturday Night Fever, Big, and The Toxic Avenger weren’t enough to convince you of the seriousness of the problem, there has been talk of a Pretty Woman musical.

The musical form has a long tradition of adapting from source material, but there was a time, not too long ago, that producers looked to great works of literature and classical drama instead of John Travolta films and children’s cartoons. If nothing is done to stop this trend, we face the possibility of revealing the musical form for the hollow spectacle it has always pretended not to be, while simultaneously ruining all of our favorite B-movies.  Do something before it’s too late.  Incidentally, you’ll know it’s too late when Speed 2: Cruise Control: The Musical hits the stage.  Don’t think it can’t happen.

What you can do to help:

Step 1.  Make your voice heard by signing the comments section of this petition and sharing it with everyone you know.

Step 2.  Avoid all movie-to-musical adaptations in favor of original musicals, and while you’re at it, you may want to avoid any production that requires the additional phrase “:The Musical” be affixed to its title to differentiate it from its original incarnation.  This will prevent the unfortunate viewing of any musical based on a video game, TV series, or comic book.

Step 3.  Let the memories be.  If it’s nostalgia that draws you to the Broadway box office, try to remember that the movie wasn’t nearly as good as you’re remembering it.

Step 4.  If you must reminisce, you can 1) go rent the DVD for roughly 1/30th of what you would pay to see the show, or 2) find a friend who also fondly remembers the film and perform bad reenactments of your favorite scenes.

Step 5.  Finally, for those of you brave enough to subject yourselves to truly original ideas, keep an eye out for a rare breed of music-less theatrical productions, known simply as “plays.”

The Internet Movie Database can provide plot inspiration for a D&D game.

Worlds away, Nezedhra, Priestess of Avandra, bristled at her latest assignment. Investigate reports of foulspawn entering from the Far Realm, in the Dreadbogs, in the dead of winter?  Her friends, all boon companions of a dozen quests, uttered no complaint when they heard of her assignment, since they knew her status as the most junior member of the order. Secretly, though, they all hoped that another acolyte would take orders soon, so that such undesirable quests could be assigned to the newest junior member.

Amazingly, Zich’nyyrl and Nezedhra met without conflict, and the latter agreed to send a messenger to the temple carrying the foulspawn’s offer. Unfortunately, word of the offer – and of the wondrous token through which someone could ask and receive virtually anything – quickly spread outside the temple walls. Even now, agents from every temple, government, cult, bandit gang and wizards’ academy are swarming toward the Dreadbogs, seeking the priestess to influence what will be asked or steal the item, even though she doesn’t even know how to use the item to ask on their behalf.

This was no assignment for a junior priestess.

Some may recognize the basic plot outlined above as being remarkably similar to a science-fiction film, “The Prototypes,” which was made for television this year. The synopsis for the film appears on this page of the Internet Movie Database.

The database contains entries from thousands of films, most of which offer a synopsis or full plot summary. These summaries, modified to fit into a Medieval fantasy setting, can provide background material for legends, rumors and complete adventures in a Dungeons & Dragons game. 

IMDB allows visitors to search the database in numerous ways, including:

• By genre – the example above came from searching “science fiction.”
• By plot – using keywords such as “sword” or “betrayal” yields interesting results
• By character – adapting situations and personality traits from favorite characters, particularly villains, can be a great help to the DM

One of the strengths of using this site for plot inspiration is that it covers multiple genres. Most conflicts presented in any movie can be modified to suit a D&D setting, often by substituting technology with magic or rituals. Clearly, the plots of fantasy films are more easily carried into a D&D game, but the DM must be cautious not to use material from films the players may know. Even the, the sheer number of database entries is sufficient to keep a dungeon master (DM) busy for years, giving rise to the title of this post.

In September, HW Design Inc. attended a screening of the moving and visually stunning independent film, INK.  You can read our review of the film above.  This week, we were excited and intrigued to hear some fascinating news from director/writer Jamin Winans. 

On November 5th, INK was uploaded to a number of pirate websites.  During the following 72 hours, it was downloaded over 150,000 times!  On November 7th, INK was the most downloaded film on Pirate Bay. 

This activity boosted INK to #16 on the IMDb MovieMeter.  Ink jumped from a position of 12,991 on IMDB to #16, moving it ahead of major studio films like, SAW IV, WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE and the breakout indie hit, PRECIOUS.  Currently, the film has been downloaded over a half a million times.

The surge in exposure brings up all sorts of questions about internet piracy and the ups and downs of being an independent film producer in today’s down economy.

For the record, we do not condone piracy nor do we ever download any music, films or TV shows for free. Artists should be paid for their hard work. That said, it is possible that the exposure Ink has just gotten across free download sites has catapulted the film into an entirely new realm. Remember that Wolverine, a franchise film with a budget of $130 million, got leaked via bit torrent before its release and got 100,000 hits in 24 hours. Ink managed to do half that in downloads, and was number 1 on Pirate Bay yesterday with more hits than Paranormal Activity, Surrogates and Julie and Julia. Again, all of these films have had the help of the studio system’s multi-million dollar marketing campaigns. Ink has had Jamin and myself, two laptops and an Army of fierce supporters grown out of our own hard-fought theatrical screenings – nothing more.
