Last Summer there was an eye-catching piece of street graffiti that sprang up in the neighbourhood. A cleverly painted silhouette falling like an exact shadow from one of those iron bollards that line the main streets and can catch you unawares right in the groin if you’re not careful. The shadow was that of a policeman with a semi-erect truncheon. A discreet and amusing reminder of the presence that hovers over us daily.

Recently local government inaugurated a project to send mounted police to patrol Lavapies. During a vacuous news report on a local television station, where the female reporter dashed around under the horses and officer’s feet, mostly asking dumb questions about poo, elderly locals expressed approval at the scheme, the police stated that they could better observe the goings-on from up there, and drivers expressed irritation at being stuck behind the horses on narrow streets. The most enthusiastic seem to be the small children who play with their families in the playground in the plaza – several times I have seen a group of toddlers daring each other to approach the nonchalant horses in small groups, only to return to their mothers squealing with mock fear and delight when one of them shifts a foot or twitches a tail at them. These are not the only modes of transport for today’s copper on the beat, however. There are also police on motorbikes, who can be seen hanging around posing like extras from C.H.I.P.s, smoking fags and gossiping while adjusting their balls. Also there are many patrol cars sliding through the streets like silent sharks on the hunt for prey. Regularly they also pull up in batches of three or four cars, so all the officers can stop and have a chat. And police on foot. In fact, let’s face it, Lavapies is a veritable constables tea-party. What are they all doing here, then? Why so many of them? And what are their relations with my neighbours, the locals?

I, of course, have never had a brush with the Spanish police so have no opinion based on experience. I say ‘of course’ not because I am an upright and law-abiding citizen, but because my profile makes me appear to be one. I am a white, blond woman, and not a particularly young one. Therefore, according to airport security guards, police, doormen etc, I am no threat at all. So I am indifferent to their presence in my neighbourhood- they never ever bother me. On the other hand, if you are African, Arab, Indian, or in any way ‘foreign’ (especially ‘foreign’ and ‘dark’) you are likely to be stopped on sight and asked for your papers. There are many illegal immigrants here who barely leave the house for fear of being stopped and deported. African residents and street hawkers demonstrated twice recently against alleged racism and police raids; it subsequently emerged that police in the capital had been given weekly quotas for arresting illegal immigrants.

And there is a darker side to police relations with the locals, fuelled by mutual antipathy and antagonism. Sometime last year there was actually a full-scale riot just up the hill on the border of the neighbourhood, in Plaza Tirso de Molina. The origin of the riot was the choice of the plaza by a group of far right protesters who had organised a rally here. It was considered as provocation by their anti-fascist counter-parts, as it is the site of Nationalist raids on Republicans during the Civil War, so they retaliated by organising disturbances. The police responded in typical heavy-handed fashion, and chaos erupted. Garbage containers were overturned and burnt, cars smashed up, stones, bricks and other blunt objects thrown at police, who retaliated by firing rubber balls back and smoke canisters. On the retreat, rioters damaged urban furniture, shop-fronts, banks and cashpoints. I knew nothing of the riots until I tried to withdraw money the next day and walking from cashpoint to cashpoint, discovered all of them had smashed-in screens. When I was told about the rioting I thought it was a joke, but as you can see for yourself in this one-minute video footage this was no joke. It was a real riot.

That explains why this sport is one of the entries for the Lavapies Olympics. I must confess I have never, ever seen police batter anyone with a truncheon in full daylight on the mean streets of Lavapies, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. If I wasn’t white and a blond female, with a passport, blue eyes and big knockers, (thus protecting me from racism of one sort, but exposing me to sexism of another sort) I might feel more intimidated. I am not afraid of the police, as I am sure most of my illegal neighbours are. A policeman is more likely to flirt with me than ask me for my papers. I am not a congenital cop-hater either. However, it would really, really amuse me if Banksy could come over here and paint this mural on one of our walls. Now that would get a reaction and amuse the locals no end.

I’ve given the matter a great deal of thought all week, and I’m afraid I’ve decided that it’s no good putting Peter Mandelson in a prison. I’m afraid he will have to be tied to the front of a van and driven round the country until he isn’t alive any more.

He announced last week that middle-class children will simply not be allowed into the country’s top universities even if they have 4,000 A-levels, because all the places will be taken by Albanians and guillemots and whatever other stupid bandwagon the conniving idiot has leapt onto in the meantime.

I hate Peter Mandelson. I hate his fondness for extremely pale blue jeans and I hate that preposterous moustache he used to sport in the days when he didn’t bother trying to cover up his left-wing fanaticism. I hate the way he quite literally lords it over us even though he’s resigned in disgrace twice, and now holds an important decision-making job for which he was not elected. Mostly, though, I hate him because his one-man war on the bright and the witty and the successful means that half my friends now seem to be taking leave of their senses.

There’s talk of emigration in the air. It’s everywhere I go. Parties. Work. In the supermarket. My daughter is working herself half to death to get good grades at GSCE and can’t see the point because she won’t be going to university, because she doesn’t have a beak or flippers or a qualification in washing windscreens at the lights. She wonders, often, why we don’t live in America.

Then you have the chaps and chapesses who can’t stand the constant raids on their wallets and their privacy. They can’t understand why they are taxed at 50% on their income and then taxed again for driving into the nation’s capital. They can’t understand what happened to the hunt for the weapons of mass destruction. They can’t understand anything. They see the Highway Wombles in those brand new 4×4s that they paid for, and they see the M4 bus lane and they see the speed cameras and the community support officers and they see the Albanians stealing their wheelbarrows and nothing can be done because it’s racist. And they see Alistair Darling handing over £4,350 of their money to not sort out the banking crisis that he doesn’t understand because he’s a small-town solicitor, and they see the stupid war on drugs and the war on drink and the war on smoking and the war on hunting and the war on fun and the war on scientists and the obsession with the climate and the price of train fares soaring past £1,000 and the Guardian power-brokers getting uppity about one shot baboon and not uppity at all about all the dead soldiers in Afghanistan, and how they got rid of Blair only to find the lying twerp is now going to come back even more powerful than ever, and they think, “I’ve had enough of this. I’m off.”

It’s a lovely idea, to get out of this stupid, Fairtrade, Brown-stained, Mandelson- skewed, equal-opportunities, multicultural, carbon-neutral, trendily left, regionally assembled, big-government, trilingual, mosque-drenched, all-the-pigs-are-equal, property-is-theft hellhole and set up shop somewhere else. But where?

You can’t go to France because you need to complete 17 forms in triplicate every time you want to build a greenhouse, and you can’t go to Switzerland because you will be reported to your neighbours by the police and subsequently shot in the head if you don’t sweep your lawn properly, and you can’t go to Italy because you’ll soon tire of waking up in the morning to find a horse’s head in your bed because you forgot to give a man called Don a bundle of used notes for “organising” a plumber.

You can’t go to Australia because it’s full of things that will eat you, you can’t go to New Zealand because they don’t accept anyone who is more than 40 and you can’t go to Monte Carlo because they don’t accept anyone who has less than 40 mill. And you can’t go to Spain because you’re not called Del and you weren’t involved in the Walthamstow blag. And you can’t go to Germany … because you just can’t.

The Caribbean sounds tempting, but there is no work, which means that one day, whether you like it or not, you’ll end up like all the other expats, with a nose like a burst beetroot, wondering if it’s okay to have a small sharpener at 10 in the morning. And, as I keep explaining to my daughter, we can’t go to America because if you catch a cold over there, the health system is designed in such a way that you end up without a house. Or dead.

Canada’s full of people pretending to be French, South Africa’s too risky, Russia’s worse and everywhere else is too full of snow, too full of flies or too full of people who want to cut your head off on the internet. So you can dream all you like about upping sticks and moving to a country that doesn’t help itself to half of everything you earn and then spend the money it gets on bus lanes and advertisements about the dangers of salt. But wherever you go you’ll wind up an alcoholic or dead or bored or in a cellar, in an orange jumpsuit, gently wetting yourself on the web. All of these things are worse than being persecuted for eating a sandwich at the wheel.

I see no reason to be miserable. Yes, Britain now is worse than it’s been for decades, but the lunatics who’ve made it so ghastly are on their way out. Soon, they will be back in Hackney with their South African nuclear-free peace polenta. And instead the show will be run by a bloke whose dad has a wallpaper shop and possibly, terrifyingly, a twerp in Belgium whose fruitless game of hunt-the-WMD has netted him £15m on the lecture circuit.

So actually I do see a reason to be miserable. Which is why I think it’s a good idea to tie Peter Mandelson to a van. Such an act would be cruel and barbaric and inhuman. But it would at least cheer everyone up a bit.

Well, despite the insane fears of the doom-sayers re: the appearance of Nick Griffin, leader of the BNP, on BBC’s topical political panel show Question Time, today I haven’t woken up in an alternative dimension where the reign of the Third Reich still rules supreme. Indeed unsurprisingly nothing has changed, despite the worst efforts of the ludicrous and highly anti-democratic Anti-Nazis League to give the moronic BNP as much free publicity as possible by yet another banner-whealding protest against the freedom of the press. And why has nothing changed? Well, because Nick Griffin is a useless cock-muncher that’s why. If you were scared of him and his goons before – and shame on you if you were, you scaredy-cat – then last nights performance must be enough to put your worries to bed. Nick Griffin appeared nervous, shifty, slimy, creepy and so far out of his depth I swear I saw a coelacanth paddling by at one point: he looked like a drowning David Brent! Christ, I even felt sorry for him at one point (I think he needs a hug). In fact he’s so uncomfortable in his own skin that he makes Gordon Brown look like the confident, debonair statesman that he so obviously isn’t. Poor, poor Nicky!

In fairness I’m not sure how many of this generation’s political-classes would have stood up to a one hour long gang-bang by Dimbleby, the rest of the panel and a largely hostile audience! Indeed, the only valid reason to be opposed to the BBC’s entirely correct position of including the BNP on Question Time was that it was so obviously going to mean that the BNP where going to disproportionally dominate every fucking question! Hopefully next time the BBC will follow the advice laid forth in The Times. Indeed the entire show was focussed on the cunt! Not a single question on the fucking postal strike for fuck’s sake! Only the penultimate question, regarding the Daily Mail’s homophobic article on the death of talentless Stephen Gately (the only sad part of this news story is that it wasn’t Roland Keaton instead), was even remotely ‘off-topic’ and even this was somehow interlinked into the rest of the show via the tedious and relentless thread of bigotry vs. freedom of the press. But actually QT wasn’t quite the bear-pit I thought it was going to be and all Griffin really showed was that he is slightly less versed in denying his old policies than the rest of the class-politik on QT, News Night and Daily Politics circuit.  Indeed even the difference on immigration was less apparent than you might suspect: Griffin saying that he wants to close the door and kick out bogus asylum seekers, although ostensibly not compulsory repatriate migrant families; Jack Straw (who suddenly seemed so old and feeble) admitted that immigration was a problem then avoiding all responsibility for it (despite being in power for the millennia); the next-gen sexy Edwina Curryesque Tory Baroness Warsi (who I’d like to kiss every inch of – I like evil women) and Chris Huhne, the LibDem nice guy (who should have been voted leader of the party instead of the Cameron-lite Klegg) both saying that it was a problem and the door needs narrowing a bit, but not closing because we’re not racists – oh no; and the obligatory and entirely superfluous non-politik guest, Bonnie Greer, who, as per usual, said nothing of any value whatsoever  (although she was marginally better than the walking abortions that past guests like Frank Skinner and Javis Cocker were). By my calculations that’s 100% of the guests who actually matter, i.e. the poli-fuckin’-ticians, saying immigration is a problem. A view, rightly or wrongly, widely agreed within British society.

So is Griffin so far off the mark? Well, yes – obviously he is, but he’s not reallyall that different in policy or current rhetoric (“British jobs for British workers” a la Gordon Brown). However, it is obvious from the show and from anybody who has taken an interest that the BNP’s policies beyond the fucking farce that has been the last few weeks, while not particularly offensive and, in fairness, quite often misrepresented (such as claims by the Anti-Nazis League that the BNP what to forcibly repatriate all migrants: claims which, I’d argue, don’t hold water), are just a white-wash (no pun intended) of their far more extreme beliefs. I have no doubts at all that Griffin and his cronies would love nothing less than to behead Jews in Wembley Stadium and hoist a burning-cross in the front lawn of every Afro-Caribbean (or African-Caribbean as some weirdo in the QT audience insisted) in the country… Terrible stuff, yes! But this is irrelevant. You can’t ban a political party on what you SUSPECT they stand for, just on what you can PROVE they stand for. And it’s not up to the BBC to decide who is and who isn’t a valid political party. Surely this is the electorate’s responsibility? Obviously the BNP have and are walking a fine-line between a dodgy kind of respectability and outlaw status, but as far as I can see they are saying and doing much less than murderous cunts like Sin Féin and Ulster Unionists ever did, so lets at least try not to be a bunch of embarrassing moralising idiots and actually deal with the facts for a fucking change. No, you can’t ban them and if there was an election in Britain today then legally the BNP could stand and, yes, the BBC were right to make the call they did: FACT!

Of course that doesn’t mean you should vote for them, no way! You can vote for anyone based on whatever reason you want, should you want to. If you, like me and anyone else higher up on the evolutionary ladder than a slug, suspect them of being a racists party, then don’t vote for them, but don’t be a cunt and don’t interrupt the freedom of the press! The BNP are racists: FACT. The Nazis were racists: FACT. But the Nazis also wanted to stop the freedom of the press and in this regard I see NO fucking difference between the fascist parties of the 1930s and the Anti-Nazis League today. If you don’t understand this then you need to take a serious look at your thinking process or your total lack of it.

Laying my cards on the table: I oppose anybody who stands against the freedom of the press and stands for censorship of anything, from art to politics: anything! I think the Anti-Nazis League need to take a good long look at their politics and consider if they are really so different from the Nazis? Because I don’t get it! It seems to me that they are just trying to close down the debate.

I have a very simple rule to life: if you ever start a sentence with ‘I’m all for freedom of the press, but…’ then stop right there, hit reverse and stick a full-stop right after the last ’s’ in ‘press’ and delete the ‘, but’ bit and whatever you put after it. You’re wrong. There is no exception to the rule. This is a scientific fact. And if there was an exception who gave you the fucking right to impose it on me anyway, cunty? To quote the mighty Peep Show: “we can all live in harmony, the Jews, the Muslims, the Racists.” Frankly, I disagree with just about every human being on the planet. Even more frankly, to be honest on general principle I don’t like most of the human beings on the planet because they’re all arseholes. And frankly, I’d prefer it if everyone just shut-the-fuck-up and stopped spouting forth their nonsense opinions all the time. (Yes, I realise the inherent hypocrisy of me doing that same thing here, but as this is my blog and you’ve decided to read it then I feel it is your fault and not mine.) But while I might disagree with you, I might hate you and I might not want to listen to you, I won’t try to ban you – and I expect the fucking same courtesy in return. Failure to comply won’t result in me banning you, no! But if I had my way it would result in you being imprisoned in that thing General Zod and his crew get put in in the Superman films when they get fired into space.

I’m not even sure if I see the need of the ANL in Britain today. There sole role seems to inadvertently give the BNP more publicity than it otherwise would. Duh! Let’s face it the BNP got a shity 2% of the vote and 2 MEP seats in an election which had a record low turnout, after a summer where the mainstream political parties had been busted for corruption and fraud. The BNP’s absolute numbers were actually static, just their share of the vote was technically bigger and only due to the system of Proportional Representation they managed to scramble together a handful of pissant seats. Now PR is a system I personally agree with. In fact I’ll spell it out: I’ve never voted and never will vote in a first-past-the-post system and if I ever do vote it will be in a PR system and that’s all! However, one of the well-known side-effects of PR is that extreme parties do a little better under this system. Both far-left and far-right parties do better, so I guess things kind of equal out: a fact which I personally think is more representational of the general public and is an actual strength rather than wakness of the system. PR is widely used across Europe and there’s been no resurgence of the Third Reich there in the last 60 odd years. It’s safe. Safe as houses. The Europeans must be laughing their garlic-munching heads off at us over the ‘rise of the BNP!’ 2%! Fuck, so-called far-right parties in most mainstream European countries regularly get 10-15% of the vote and guess fucking what? No fucking death camps to be seen this side of the Black Sea. Even in countries like Switzerland who have voted in a far-right government we see that the far-right, once in power, becomes much more moderate. Indeed there is plenty of evidence across Europe to suggest that the BBC’s decision to ‘legitimize’ the BNP by allowing Griffin to appear on QT will actually have a moderating influence. Same thing happened in Northern Island. What more proof do you need? I’m not saying that Le Pen is a pleasant sight at the best of times, but I am saying that beyond his rhetoric he is actually a much lesser figure in Le French politik than we perceive him to be on this side of the duty-free checkout. Fuck Le Pen! Without PR there is no fucking chance of the BNP ever getting in power: FACT. Even with PR I doubt the BNP could ever realistically get more than 5-10% of the vote and even if they did… well, that’s democracy, shit-head. I don’t agree with it. I’d sooner have a meritocracy with a second house drafted jury-style as a fail-safe. You might not agree, but if you have ever voted, then you agree with democracy, then you have to accept the BNP’s right to exist and the public’s right to hear them out and, if they’re dumb enough, vote for them. Get over it! If you don’t trust the public then you’re saying you want a different and non-democratic system: FACT, which is a different debate.

The population of the UK hit a new high of 61.4 million in the middle of 2008. This jump in population is despite a drop in migration to the country since 2007 since the government have started the biggest clampdown on immigration since World War 2.

Somewhat hypocritically though, while our government feeds the red-top tabloids by making it increasingly harder for foreigners to think of UK removals, the amount of British people making use of other countries’ immigration rules continues to grow.

As if there’s just too many of us to stay put, the number of us emmigrating overseas to Australia grew again in 2008. In fact, 395,000 Brits decided that all the bad weather, bad leadership and recession was enough and that Australia seemed a far better destination. Most of them through the Australian General Skilled Migration Programme – after all, they’re crying out for workers over there.

Not just Australia either, three Britons quit the country every minute. While you may say “it’s nothing to do with the government” you’d be wrong – since 1997, two million UK nationals have decided on emmigrating overseas. It is the largest level of emigtation since the first World War. And what happened in 1997? Yep, Labour’s coming of power.

If the Conservatives make government as seems so inevitable, I can’t see our borders opening up. If we continue getting out at the same rate, will there be any of us Brits left?

 However, of criminalistic and strategic point of view ,the results of un solving such problem are:

• Terrorism actions

• Criminal acts.  For example a person who obtains a new identity may commits a crime then disappear by using his or her hiding identity document . Then would be more difficult or even impossible to arrest him if he escaped to some specific countries which – for some reasons- refuse to extradite its citizens or others to another State

• Encouraging the smuggling of the asylum seekers

• Encouraging the forgery and selling fake documents

• In danger the national security

• Considering and registering some persons as citizens in some countries while in fact they are not. Such as a one who claims that he is for example a Palestinan while in fact he is a Jordanian or Syrian.

• Increasing racism

• Prohibitive costs

• Social problems

 The intention of hiding the true identity

It is natural that there are several reasons why an asylum seeker try to hide his true identity such as:

• To hide his real age

• To claim that he is from a country which its citizens can obtain asylum.

•  Not to be returned to his country since he has no reason to seek asylum

• He has a residence permit in a Muslim or Arab country

• He is a killer or he has stolen some sum from his work , parents or other

• To have more time to get marrage

• To have more time to do business

• Other reasons

How they hide their identity ?

•  Burning or threwing the documents somewhere

• Hiding it somewhere . Example with a friend.

• Sending it back

• Giving or selling it to the smugglers

• Keeping it at his country or another country and comming with a fake passport or a real stolen passport with fake identity .

• Using or presenting other forms of identification, such as driving licences , military ID , universities certificates which can be obtained easily

Can we identify them and how?

 It could be difficult or even impossible to identify their identity for some reason such as: 

1- Trying to ask about a person in his homeland may in danger his or his family life since he and many other claim that. While in fact and according to my experiance in Islamic countries , such claiming and even the analyses which done by some others should be reanalysed

 2- Establishing the identity from people who claim that they know one or some of them cant be a safe solution. For example, before som monthes an immigration department recieved an anonym letter in which the writer assert that a person who got a permit has another identity which he use it for other reasons. In fact the letter contains very important information which assure that the sender know the immigrant and proving that he do has another id. While by a special method of examination I found that the sender lied and that the immigrant has no such ID. Another case was about a person who has no identity document and a witness claimed that they know him . But when I examined the case I found that he was from another country and that the witness was wrong .

3- Using some kind of questions such as geographical questions , questions about traditions, politics…etc… can’t give conclusive results for some reasons such as:

• Such question became very famous so they have the right answers .In my criminalistic and strategic research I found that they have a written document with instructions how and when to answer the police and the immigrations officiers question …etc…

• Ther is a very unique group who know many cultures, dialects, geography… which mak it difficult or even impossible for a non specialist to identify their real nationalities

4- By sworn affidavits ! Such act dos not help .During twenty five years of my career I saw thousands of people Swear falsely before the courts, the Prosecutor and the police according to their belief which assert that they may do that for certain reasons

Therefor, according to the since I believe that the solution must include measures to stop the flow of such seekers but not only to identify them . Some of the measures:

a – Identity Identification

Such identification can be done by useing the criminalistics tactic and technique which I’m going to mention it but without any detail .

• Using new type of questions which they dont know about

• Using the Kriminalistiks technique ( persons & Document )

• Legal information

طرق تزوير التواقيع 
ان طرق تزوير التواقيع عديدة ولكن المهم منها ماهو متعارف عليه ويستخدم من قبل معظم من يقومون بتزويرها. مثلا التقليد. حيث يقوم المُزور بتزوير التوقيع الصحيح بتقليده من خلال النظر اليه او من خلال مايسمى بالشف او الطبع

فحص التواقيع
ان التوقيع كالكتابة ، فهو عبارة عن خط يحرر باليد ويتميز بخصائص كتابية عديدة تختلف بمجموعها من شخص لاخر . وهذه الخصائص العديدة هي التي تستخدم في عمليات الفحص او المقارنة مابين التواقيع المشكوك بصحتها والتواقيع الصحيحة . ومن تلك الخصائص التي يتم فحصها ومقارنتها الضغط الكتابي ، السرعة الكتابية ، طريقة ربط العناصر الكتابية ، الزوايا ، المسافات ، الحجم ودرجة الميلان وغيرها من الخصائص. ولكن يجب ان نعلم ان هنالك عوامل عدة تؤثر على نتيجة التزوير . فدرجات التزوير هي ” متقنة او متوسطة او رديئة ” وكل ذلك يعتمد على الشخص المُزور وعلى التوقيع . لذلك فالفحص يختلف من قضية لاخرى.

هذا وان الفاحص يتوجب ان يكون عالما باسباب الاختلافات التي تظهر في التواقيع . فهنالك اختلافات ناتجة عن التزوير واخرى نتيجة للمرض واخرى نتيجة للخوف وغيرها من الاسباب . فليس اي اختلاف يعني ان التوقيع مزورا. والخبير الذي يستطيع ان يقوم بفحوصات علمية حقيقية وصائبة هو فقط الذي يستطيع تشخيص اسباب الاختلافات في الواقيع او النصوص الخطية . بعكس ذلك اي ان كان لايستطيع التمييز بينها فان نتائج فحوصاته لن تكون سوى عبارة عن تخمينات ونتائج خاطئة تضلل العدالة.  مثال على ذلك القضية المصورة ادناه حيث يظهر ان هنالك اختلافات واضحة بين التوقيع موضوع الفحص والتوقيع الصحيح  . فان كان الخبير غير متمرس على تشخيض اسباب الاختلافات كماذكرت سابقا فانه حتما سيدعي ان التوقيع ادناه هو توقيع مزور رغم انه صحيح يعود لمحرر التوقيع الصحيح
ولذلك لابد من الحذر الشديد خاصة من قبل من اشترك في برامج تدريبة غير جامعية وقصيرة المدة فعليه ان يحذر من اعطاء اية نتائج في مثل هذه القضايا ومن الافضل ان يصرح بعدم مقدرته على فحصها وان يعيدها الى مصدرها. وخلال فترة عملي التي تقارب الخمسة وعشرون عاما اطلعت على العديد من القضايا التي وللاسف كانت نتائج الفحوصات فيها خاطئة نتيجة لماسبق ذكره . علما بانني ساتحدث بالتفصيل عن هذا الموضوع في مقال اخر يتعلق بالخبير والسلطات القضائية

So, Alan Johnson the Home Secretary wants tougher citizenship tests introduced in an attempt to improve the behaviour of those moving to this country. If behaviour is listed as one of the criteria for citizenship application, it will apparently discourage people from protesting at soldiers parades as our troops return from Iran or Afghanistan.

 I do not support these protests against our brave troops but is it not the case that one of the benefits of being a citizen in our democratic country is that we are allowed to make our opinions known. (Freedom of Speech I think they call it and I am exercising that privilege right now) We will probably find that the protests against the troops were carried out by a minority of radicals who are already ‘British’ Citizens. Those in the country illegally or applying for citizenship will be keeping well below the radar.

 There have been a lot of details released about illegal immigrants working in high profile jobs. Remember Jacqui Smith’s revelation that thousands of illegal immigrants had been cleared to work as security guards? I think it is here that the government should be addressing their efforts and making them all citizens is not the way ahead. Sir Andrew Green highlighted the millions that are unemployed in this country; the fact that we are in the middle of a massive recession and questioned the idea of providing jobs to immigrants.

 It is the case that some illegal immigrants are well settled into this country with reasonable jobs and with families settled into communities. There are some that say we should be finding these people and giving them the opportunity to make a worthwhile contribution to the country by utilising their skills and encouraging the payment of Tax and National Insurance. I am sorry but having a family does not wash with me. If they are illegal they are illegal and should be sent home. If they then want to live here they should apply through the correct channels. I appreciate that this may take years but we need to put a stop on immigration completely. It should be a 1 out, 1 in policy so that we can stabilise the population and get our country back on track.

As most UK employers are now aware, a new obligation has been placed upon them by the UK government to apply for a license to sponsor and bring migrants in to the United Kingdom under the new UK immigration points-based system. Your company shall need to apply for a licence if you intend to employ migrants that are not nationals of the European Economic Area (EEA) from the end of November 2008.

The UK Border Agency’s newly-formed Sponsorship Management Team is primed to deal with each licence application. However, despite the register being open since February 2008, the number of applications actually filed has been much less than anticipated. It is widely considered that the slow uptake in companies applying can be contributed to the arduous process involved in filing an application, and the fear of current HR systems being potentially audited by a member of the UK Border Agency.

Visa regimes that regulate or restrict movement of citizens of two countries appear to live their own lives sometimes. Unfortunately, the necessity to get that visa sticker usually complicates lives and travels of people who were in no way the reason why the visas were introduced in the first place.

The Czechs travelled to Canada freely until 1997 when Ottawa slammed the door due to the high number of asylum seekers. The same issue marred Prague’s relationships with Britain in the past. Apparently, former federal ties were stronger in a certain demographic, as Slovakia had the same problem with Britain, Finland and Belgium – influxes of asylum seekers prompted the harsh response, sometimes in the form of introducing visa requirements. There was an era when keen asylum seekers quickly found a replacement country – sometimes with the help of even more keen for-profit “helpers”. Once the visas were lifted, exodus re-started with varied degree of intensity. Fortunately, within few years it all became pointless since both Slovakia and the Czech republic joined the European Union.

In October 2007, Canada lifted the restriction for Czech citizens and since March 2008, Slovaks could travel to Canada without visas too. Following the pattern known from the past, the Czechs flooded Canada again. And, following all previous exoduses, it’s mostly the Romas who apply for asylum. Or so the Czechs claim, but given their and the Slovaks’ previous experience, it can be taken for granted.

Exodus may sound like an exaggeration, but the word is rather appropriate when things are put into a proper context. In 2008, 861 Czechs sought asylum in Canada. The first quarter of 2009 saw 653 asylum applications (34 succeeded), mostly claimed on the minority related issues. It doesn’t sound like much but it’s more than asylum applications put forward by the Afghans (488), the Iraqis (282) and the Cubans (184). In fact, Czech asylum seekers placed fourth behind the Mexicans, the Haitians and the Colombians. Indirect threat that the visa regime could be reinstated is not entirely out of place.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper acknowledged that the current state of the affairs might not be entirely Czech government’s fault. Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek, who used what was perhaps a less diplomatic language, called Canadian asylum system “soft” and suggested that the two countries wouldn’t be discussing the issue if Canada reclassified the Czech republic as a safe country of origin. If that was a case, Czech citizens wouldn’t be eligible to apply for asylum. More on that later.

The Lidove noviny (Czech daily newspaper) reminded that Mr Harper had already admitted that the influx is organized. The daily also mentioned a secret expert report that claimed the mass emigration is coordinated by former Czechoslovak citizens living in Canada. If so, this would not be entirely new situation, since similar “agencies” were suspected to be behind past exoduses of Slovak and Czech Romas to European countries. Profiteers or “employment mediators” operate on both sides of the Atlantic which means that both Prague and Ottawa need to cooperate to eradicate their operations or, at least, limit their influence.

The Czech government cannot restrict the right of Czech citizens to travel – to Canada or any other country. However, as Mr. Topolanek noted, the solution would be to find jobs for the asylum seekers in the Czech republic. Another good thing might be to make sure the message “don’t believe the scams” gets across to those who need to hear it the most. Apparently, an abundance of people who lost a great deal of money to the profiteers is not enough to deter new victims.

The Czech side feels that Ottawa should reclassify the Czech Republic’s safe country of origin status. The problem is, the safe country of origin status is a tricky concept, and, according to Canadian ambassador to Prague Michael Calcott, every applications are considered on a case-to-case basis and everybody can apply (source: Czech Television). If so, a change of attitude is necessary. Sure, Czech republic has its problems, but the country is perfectly safe, certainly no less safer than Canada. It’s Canada’s NATO ally. If Ottawa needed any further assurance it should have found it in 2004 when the Czech republic joined the EU, or at the very latest, in 2007, when it joined the Schengen Area, a part of Europe (26 countries) with no border controls, open for the free movement of more than 400 million Europeans.
