We’ve made it halfway … !

60 Badly Drawn Boy – About a Boy (2002) (left) - Both the soundtrack and movie were unjustly ignored by many during the decade – the movie was probably the high point of Hugh Grant’s career and the soundtrack had some of the best songs that Badly Drawn Boy have ever recorded (even a Christmasy tune!) Maybe it helped that the soundtrack never had a chance to get bogged with a lot of the filler that most Badly Drawn Boy albums are burdened.

59 Johnny Cash – American III (2000) – The third of the Rick Rubin Era albums has J.R. Cash covering Nick Cave and U2 along with duetting with Will Oldham. Can it get any better? Not really. This was the high point of the Cash revival years where he nailed both the classic country songs and the modern rocks songs he made his own.

58 M.I.A. – Kala (2006) - M.I.A.’s sophomore album was no slump. More diverse, more experimental and oddly, more popular than Arular, mostly thanks to the long, long warmup of “Paper Planes” into a pop hit.

57 Xiu Xiu – The Air Force (2006) - Yes, I, in fact, have two Xiu Xiu albums on this list. The Air Force is even more disturbing and infectious than its predecessors. “Bishop, CA” is an excellent song for driving late at night on a lonely road if you want to become extremely paranoid of alien abduction or demonic attack. Yes, that is a good thing.

56 Rhymefest – Blue Collar (2006) – Now, if we really want to talk about an album that time forgot, Blue Collar is just that. Did anyone beyond me actually listen to this album? And if not, why? The songs produced by Mick Ronson are bordering on brilliant, stealing from the Strokes and creating a beyond-the-grave duet with ODB (singing”Build Me Up, Buttercup”). Poor lost song of Jay-Z really needs the fates to shine on him.

55 Cast of Buffy the Vampire Slayer – Once More With Feeling (2001) (right) – Where would the ’00s be without Joss Whedon? Well, at least my ‘oos. No where, thats where. It actually took me a while to warm up to Once More With Feeling but lo-and-behold, a few years later I’m doing the Buffy sing alongs with the best of them. I imagine many of you might give up on my list right here, but that would be your loss.

54 Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! – Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! (2005) – When this came out, I think I referred to it as the album David Byrne wishes he made. I still believe that, but I now notice how uneven the album actually is. Not that there is anything particularly wrong with that because when it hits its stride, it really does, but the band has a ways to come back out of the wilderness after their pretty terrible sophomore set.

53 Peter Bjorn and John – Writer’s Block (2007) – There was an awful lot of really great Scandinavian modern rock this decade, wasn’t there?

52 Portishead – Third (2008) – It took so long for this album to come out, I think a lot of people might have expected it needed to be the next coming of Jesus Christ the Album. Luckily, Portishead didn’t just reproduce their last work – they did update their sound with remarkable results.

51 The Horrors – Primary Colours (2009) (left) – The highest ranking album from the current year was a big surprise to me. Their debut was pretty terrible, but the Horrors brought in Chris Cunningham (the video director) to produce some of the album and suddenly they found their Joy Division roots and lost the gimmicky goth pretensions. Is this the next coming of Radiohead? (Probably not, but you never know).

Here is your iTunes iMix for #60-51. Missing from the iMix is Once More with Feeling and Rhymefest, so here are youtube links to make up for it:

Buffy (a great TV rip! … well, no, not great … thank you 20th Century Fox).

Rhymefest: Devil’s Pie

And if you missed it: #70-61, 80-71, 90-81 and 100-91.

New beginnings – Energetic – Creative – Protective – Dominating – Sensitive

Enhanced creativity and inspiration.
An intense need to birth new projects and nurture them.
Starting new projects even when the current one is not yet finished.
Tendency to nurture others in a parental way, expecting the same treatment in return.
Lying still for long periods of time, and then bursting into activity.
Biding your time. Controlling a situation.
Heightened reactivity to any changes taking place around you, frequently rushing in to “keep the dam from breaking.”

CHALLENGES:
Overprotective, dominating, territorial.
Being overly attached to being a caretaker.
Making mountains out of molehills.
Feeling unsupported in life. Struggle for security. Lack of trust.
Oversupporting others, giving too much, abandoning your own needs for others.
Caught in the struggle created by expectations.
Critical and fussy. Extremely touchy and sensitive.
Difficulty taking criticism, reacting defensively when corrected.
Expecting others to intuitively know your feelings; you are responsible for communicating them.
Neediness and co-dependency. Look at your own issues of basic security, self-worth, and the need for outside validation.

If you’re in So Cal and like books, then support your independent bookstores. Here’s a current list of shops composed by nonprofit group “Future of Publishing Think Tank:” List of Independent Bookstores.

Currently I live in Eagle Rock and feel fortunate that IMIX is just down the street. IMIX is a treasure, a unique store, which makes me like LA, and I like to believe that IMIX could exist nowhere but here. I’m pretty sure that they are struggling, so I encourage you, if you happen to be on the East Side, to check out this bookstore.

They’re having an event this Sunday from 11 am-7pm with various artwork from local artists. If you’ve never been to IMIX or haven’t been for a while, then Sunday is the day to stop by and show your support.

You’ll find books with a political bent, books written by Latino writers. You’ll find awesome clothing, crafts, like handmade gloves, jewelry, purses, and wallets.

Away we go …

70 Flaming Lips – Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (2002) (left) - It has always amazed me that this band went from “She Don’t Use Jelly” to this – a prog rock epic for the 21st century. Yet, oddly, I have trouble of thinking of a lot of things to say about the album beyond the fact that I like hearing the music.

69 Hot Chip – The Warning (2006) – They started off a little more electrosynth than they have become, but no less fascinating. “And I Was a Boy from School” is a minor epic in synthpop, up there with “Blue Monday” and “It’s a Sin”.

68 Patrick Wolf – The Magic Position (2007) – If Patrick Wolf doesn’t have one of the longest careers of anyone on this list, I would be surprised. Then again, he might also never release another album, that is the way of the musical prodigies like Wolf. This album is so richly textured but it is really the utter brilliance of the the title track that has me returning to The Magic Position.

67 Various Artists – Dave Chappelle’s Block Party (2006) – Should I admit I’ve never actually watched the movie from which this soundtrack is culled? No matter, the music is what really matters, with some excellent live performances from Dead Prez, Black Star and a show-stopped by the Roots with Erykah Badu. This would put to rest any argument that hip hop artists aren’t musicians.

66 Fleet Foxes – Fleet Foxes (2008) – I suppose the Fleet Foxes are sort of the logical progression from Appalachian folk rock into the realms of alternative rock. Fleet Foxes might be considered Palace Music re-envisioned in a pop music world.

65 Konono No. 1 – Congotronics Vol. 1 (2005) (right) - It is hard to ignore an album made by a bunch of musicians who made most of their instruments from scrap cars on the streets of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The music ends up emerging into an almost trancelike universe showing a sort of parallel evolution of sound.

64 Mclusky – Do Dallas (2002) – It must be fun to be a bunch of badasses like Mclusky? I mean, they have the balls to play sounds like “The World Loves Us and Is Our Bitch” or “Fuck this Band”. They were severely underappreciated during their brief, two album, existence, sort of a Welsh version of Ned’s Atomic Dustbin.

63 The Black Keys – Thickfreakness (2003) – I’ve always felt a little sorry for the Black Keys. I mean, fundamentally, are they that much different than the White Stripes, musically speaking? Both borrow heavily from guitar-centric blues, both rose out of the indie rock ranks, yet only one became international superstars … and it wasn’t the Black Keys. Did the right band become famous? Maybe … maybe not.

62 Bright Eyes – I’m Wide Awake It’s Morning (2005) – When Bright Eyes released their dual album I’m Wide Awake It’s Morning and Digital Ash in a Digital Urn, I was one of the few who liked the electro-pop Digital Urn better than It’s Morning but ah, tastes do change I suppose (although I still think “Easy/Lucky/Free” from Digital Urn is one of Bright Eye’s best songs and videos). I’m not sure I care for the track that Conor Oberst’s career has gone since, but I’m Wide Awake It’s Morning has staying power.

61 The Pipettes – We are the Pipettes (2006) (left) - OK, so maybe The Pipettes are one of those bands that gets a lot of credit because it was constructed of three attractive British female singers. It might have helped a lot. That being said, this sort of soul revival was a very nice welcome in the midst of a very moody decade – this is why I still love my real pop music, no matter what the hipsters try to tell us.

80 The Breeders – Title TK (2002) (left) – I’ve forgiven Kim Deal for the bodily injury inflicted on me in 1994. I have also forgiven her for taking her time between Breeders albums. I think many people were disappointed with Title TK as it had no “Cannonball” and felt more like a home demo than an album 8 years in the making (well, it might not have been in the making for all those years).

79 Amon Tobin – Supermodified (2000) – I remember having a conversation with someone in 2000 about how electronic wasn’t just a flash in the pan but it was hear to stay. Sadly, looking back on that, it was sort of like Homer claiming that the height of rock and roll was Grand Funk Railroad. It doesn’t mean that the decade was bereft of excellent electronic, it just means that it quickly receded into the background (or hybridized effectively).

78 Passion Pit – Manners (2009) – Speaking of which, this might be a prime example of the electro-hybridization. There is a level of uncomfortableness in the album, maybe with the forced falsetto vocals or children yelling the chorus, but really, that is what made it so fascinating. Or maybe I just like music that makes me feel a little uneasy, much like …

77 Xiu Xiu – Fabulous Muscles (2004) – I give a lot of people a hard time for listening to bands that I consider, well, unlistenable because all they seem to do is f&%k around with instruments and suddenly get praised for their genius. Then I think that I might not have an appendage on which to stand because of my undying love for Xiu Xiu. Too bad, I’m going to go on living with this inconsistency.

76 The Faint – Danse Macabre (2001) - My friend Melissa, who seems to have vanished into oblivion, introduced me to the Faint in a record store somewhere in Cambridge. I probably spent a good part of the next year listening to this album.

75 New Pornographers – Mass Romantic (2001) (right) – I checked both Mass Romantic and Electric Version out from the Corvallis Public Library (nice job on the part of the music purchasers there), not really knowing what to expect beyond the fact that I had read “hey, the New Pornographers are good.” The last thing I expected was a pile of power pop that was like a lo-fi revival of the Cars (but better).

74 Hot Chip – Made in the Dark (2008) – Sometimes I think that Hot Chip will slowly climb into the top 10 of my favorite bands – sort of like a Pet Shop Boys 2.0. Made in the Dark did nothing to dispel that notion.

73 YACHT – I Believe in You. Your Magic is Real (2007) – I think this album is a fine example of what happens when a band that spent too much time dithering around on previous albums trying to be “experimental” sits down and tries to write pop songs. And yes, it works like a charm. Note to many bands: being catchy and succinct isn’t a sin.

72 Ratatat – Remixes Vol. 1 and 2 (2004/2007) – Maybe I cheated a little bit by including these unreleased (well, released briefly for free on the internet) remix albums on this list, but very few ‘mix tape’ adventures had as much of an impact on my listening habits as Ratatat’s. I eagerly await Vol. 3.

71 Tilly & the Wall – Wild Like Children (2004) (left) – I am a sucker for charming bands and Tilly & the Wall turned the charm dial up to 11. Tap dance percussion? Check. Mixed male-female vocals? Check. Songs about love? Check. They might be a little gimmicky, but you know, sometimes that AOK.

Here is your iTunes iMix for 80-71, which sadly lacks any of the Ratatat remixes and oddly, the Breeders (go figure, iTunes lacks Title TK). Thankfully you can find Ratatat’s remix of Allure on Youtube (audio only) and the Breeders’ “Huffer” (on Conan) as well.

Well, I meant to post 90-81 earlier this week, but hey, I was busy … but here it is now. Enjoy!

90 The Anniversary – Your Majesty (2001) – In the same group as Papas Fritas, the Anniversary’s followup to Designing a Nervous Breakdown was much more in the 70s power pop spectrum than the post-punk emo of their debut. It also happened to be their swansong, but for half of 2001, it was all I listened to.

89 Girl Talk – Feed the Animals (2008) – Much like my best of 2008 list, I feel a little ambivalence towards putting something like Girl Talk on a list of best albums – it is more of a collage of sound that anything. However, that is postmodernism for you, where patische is just as legitimate as anything – and boy, Girl Talk is a blast.

88 Andrew WK – I Get Wet (2002) – Speaking of album that are merely fun, Andrew WK exists in that netherworld where it is hard to tell if its the album or the concept you like. There isn’t really anything that serious on I Get Wet but the amount of energy released by Andrew WK during the course of the album is enough to grab and keep your attention.

87 Beck – Sea Change (2002) – On the flipside, Sea Change was about as subtle an album that Beck has ever recorded – almost like Beck-meets-Nick Drake in its balladry. You might be concerned that such of metamorphosis might not work out, but somehow Beck’s voice works out beautiful in the stripped-down setting.

86 Vampire Weekend – Vampire Weekend (2008) - Sure, they’re another hype band, but kind of like Jens Lekman’s Paul Simon revival, Vampire Weekend borrowed heavily from that Graceland sound – and it ended up working out just fine. The band lived up to a lot of the hype.

85 Jose Gonzalez – Veneer (2005) – You have to love the scandatino, part-Argentine, part-Swedish, Jose Gonzalez channeled his inner Nick Drake to record a heartbreaking set of guitar ballads. Of course, the high points were his genius covers of the Knife’s “Heartbeats” and Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” (and a little less impressive cover of Kylie).

84 The Walkmen – You & Me (2008) – Sure, it didn’t have a standout like “The Rat” (see #99), but the overall experience of You & Me was much more solid – it was both accessible and interesting. It had that dusty, echoing sound that is a signature of the Walkmen (and the predecessor Jonathan Fire Eater) but didn’t get bogged down with Dylanesque meanderings.

83 Yeah Yeah Yeah – Its Blitz (2009) - Like a lot of bands, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs had a lot to live up to after their debut Fever to Tell and they sounded like they were crushed by the weight with their ponderous sophomore album. Luckily, after that misfire, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs were able to cut loose and have some fun. Its Blitz was more new wave than punk rock, but somehow Karen O just seems like a natural for it – sadly, few others like the album as much as I did.

82 Sigur Ros – ( ) (2002) – I got this album out of a free CD bin in my days at KBVR … I’m still at a loss why they didn’t think it was good enough for use on the station. I actually had no idea what to make of it when I popped it in my CD player (it was 2002), but the near-ambient Radiohead-on-tranquilizers sound combined with the bizarre made-up language was mesmerizing. Of course, I’m still amused when I shocked a friend of mine in 2007 when I informed him that the lead singer was, in fact, a guy.

81 M.I.A. – Arular (2005) – There is definitely something undeniably charming about a Sri Lankan female singer/rapper mixing it up with thick synth beats. Sometimes it was hard to follow M.I.A. and her rambunctious nature, but you had to admit that once you did, it was too much fun to avoid.

Here is the iTunes iMix for #90-81.

And check out #100-91 of my favorite albums of the ’00s.

I might as well start this list now since I can’t ever remember which girl I made out with on certain nights.

Now that I’ve gotten the Best of 2009 out of the way, it is time to start the best of the decade. Well, that is to say, my favorite albums of the 2000s. Lets begin!

100 Jarvis Cocker – Further Complications (2009) (left) - Yes, nothing like starting the list with an album from this year. Jarvis has had a successful career since going solo from Pulp, but Further Complications was a significant step for his former band – mostly thanks to Steve Albani’s raw production. Of course, having a song that talks about paleontology doesn’t hurt either.

99 The Walkmen – Bows + Arrows (2004) – Sometimes I feel bad that my feelings about an album is almost entirely based on a single great song. Bows & Arrows is a great album, but it is so weighted towards the absolute magnificence of “The Rat”.

98 Bon Savants – Post Rock Defends the Nation (2006) – I’ve recently heard that the Bon Savants are no longer fronting the same lineup. This is too bad considering how great their debut 2006 album was – a real power pop gem.

97 Maximo Park – A Certain Trigger (2006) – A lost piece of brit rock that didn’t get the attention it deserved – a logical evolution from Ned’s Atomic Dustbin and Gang of Four. You would have though that all those people falling for Bloc Party would have loved Maximo Park as well.

96 The Shins – Oh, Inverted World (2001) – I would imagine this is the first entry that might cause people to gasp. “How could he rate the Shins so low?” Well, it happens. I bought the album because everyone was, and sure, I enjoyed it, but rarely do I find myself returning to it. Fun alternative pop, but not much to stick to you bones.

95 The Knife – Deep Cuts (2006) (left) - Scandinavian synth monsters! Deep Cuts was much cheerier compared to their more well-known follow-up Silent Shout, but it made it all that more accessible. Just think Abba if they loved their Joy Division.

94 Coldplay – A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002) – Again with the gasps. I like Coldplay, just like I like U2. There is nothing wrong with that – they right catchy pop songs, that really, that is a skill in itself. I don’t need to have my ears barraged by songs in odd meters layering 26 different vocals in a sandwich – sometimes I just like a good piano line.

93 Papas Fritas – Buildings & Grounds (2000) – Now, here is a real missed gem of the decade. The swan song of one of the best power pop bands from Boston, Buildings and Grounds was the most cohesive of the band’s offerings – like Fleetwood Mac for the new century.

92 Gogol Bordello – Gypsy Punks (2005) – Maybe I just have a soft spot for this kind of odd eastern European punk – its both sinister and fun-loving at the same time. Case in point, “Start Wearing Purple” is equal parts pop hit and disturbing back-alley threat.

91 Tiger Saw – Sing! (2005) (left) – Another one of those Boston bands with a short lifespan that’s still kickin’ around after a decade (see comments below), but Sing! was the closest that the Hub has come to having a Built to Spill in its midst.

Here is the iTunes iMix for albums 100-91.

Those old ‘phobos’ links to iTunes content always bugged me. I have long lamented URLs that trigger launching the iTunes app just to get storefront info on the music/artist.

iTunes Preview, launched yesterday, addresses this by replicating the iTunes music catalogue in the browser—everything but the actual song previews which you access by clicking that link that launches the iTunes app.

Take a look: Roseanne Cash—The List

These iTunes links are more accessible and more relevant to more people—in particular people who have not yet installed iTunes. It also exposes the full catalogue to search engines so expect these links to pitch up in searches.

I really wish they’d open up song previews to this, especially for iMixes. I’m guessing they’ve done enough research that indicates that the song preview itself is tightly linked to the purchase, in which case their priority would be to encourage people who do not have iTunes to get iTunes. (People like me who already have iTunes will just grumble, then follow through to the app to make a purchase decision.) At this stage, Apple’s priority is no doubt extending the reach of the iTunes application—not closing the $1.29/.99 sale. (Which makes me sad.)

Tone 9 holds the purpose and intent for fulfillment, mastery, and completion of large cycles.

Red is the color of the East. Its element is fire. Its medicine is for birthing things.

So, the message for today is:

Breathe in. Breathe out. Breathe in, and feel your belly expand. Breathe out, and feel your shoulders release. Imix represents the Source of Life, the Divine Mother supporting everything, the foundation of all ventures. Today is an excellent day to be present to that deepest level of support and to fully receive it, knowing that you can master and fulfill your dreams. Fulfill the pattern you came to weave.

Imix, in common Mayan usage, means root. Its energetic signature offers the deep nurturing of primordial Mother, trust, support, birth, and receptivity.

Tone 8 holds the purpose and intent for harmonic resonance. Eight brings together the foundation of the Self empowered in tone 5 with the sacred power of the trinity. Eight offers guidance to follow what you resonate with, like a musical harmony; there you will find unique opportunities.

Red is the color of the East. Its element is fire. Its medicine is for birthing things.

So, the cosmic energy of today is:

Create a soft nest for yourself today. Nurture yourself in a holy way. Breathe into your heart and feel the Divine Mother’s love beating through it. Picture yourself curled up and enfolded in her embrace, her heart beating gently, her body soft like a blanket. Now allow all your cares and concerns to melt into her until all that is left is your core essence. Be empowered through your core today.

My latest research pathfinder, Travel Across America USA, came together rather quickly, but it is one of my favorites to date. Although I did not get to collaborate as much as I had hoped with the teacher on the project as of this evening, I feel confident we will conference next week and make any adjustments that may be needed since we have worked together, and he is really enthusiastic about using Google Docs and now moving on to Google Sites.

In this project, the students essentially must research and collect information about travel destinations between Juneau, Alaska and Key West , Florida. You can see the requirements on the pathfinder page, but students are responsible for collecting multiple forms of data and representing it in an interesting and meaningful way. I think the use of Google Docs (the presentation and spreadsheet tools) , Google Sites, and Google Maps can be instrumental in this project! I am hopeful that I can confirm we will be using all three sets of tools to embed content and showcase the student projects.

This research pathfinder incorporates some of my favorite forms of social media:

A widget featuring a travel guide via Google Books

RSS feeds from Frommer’s and Lonely Planet Twitter accounts

RSS feeds for blogs from these two travel powerhouses

RSS feeds for travel podcasts and vodcasts

Widgets featuring Flickr photo group pools sponsored from Frommer’s and Lonely Planet

The use of “kwout” to highlight key websites that can be helpful for the assignment

A Google Map I created to show some of the travel destinations I would choose if I were doing the assignment to model how students might use Google Maps; in addition, I have provided links to tutorials although students will have to use some of the instructional videos at home since they are embedded from YouTube

An iTunes iMix of “travel music” created by National Geographic music (fun!)

I find it incredibly exciting to create a pathfinder that integrates so much social media to help students see how helpful and fun these resources can be. What else would you add to this pathfinder? Your suggestions are welcome!
