There is a cool little feature in iMovie called “Ducking.” This is a great feature that automatically lowers the background music so you can hear your subject talking.

The trick to remember is that you want to do this to the clip that you WANT to hear and not the surrounding clips. In iMovie, simply select the clip that you want to hear (e.g. the subject talking). Then choose the audio adjust button. Check the box for Ducking. You can then slide the percentage bar to adjust how much the other clips’ volume is adjusted. That’s all there is too it. Now when you playback your clip, the background audio will automatically lower when it reaches the subject talking clip.

Whose job is it to teach writing skills to students who are learning to write lab reports for a chem

Whose job is it to teach writing skills to students who are learning to write lab reports for a chemistry class? Is that the job of the Language Arts teacher? Or should the Chemistry teacher perhaps make sure that student writing encapsulates correct conventions of punctuation and grammar?

We as teachers are so excited to add “TECHIE TOYS” to enhance the ‘products’ of learning. We ask our students to display their content learning for example, through different techie-tool choices like imovie, powerpoint, podcasts, or blogs. BUT, when it comes to ‘end product’ sometimes the product is crap!! The learner’s imovie may be horrible, the blog may be full of grammatical mistakes and the podcast voice recording may be a mumbled mess. Whose job is it to teach the tech skills required to enhance learning/application of content?

When I look at any type of teaching, I believe it is the teacher at hand who is responsible for teaching the skills to attain the quality of the end product. BUT, with that said, it sure does help to collaborate and to work together as a team to support each other and students with consistency of the skills to be taught. If we want a movie, we (collectively) need to teach the skills of how to make a movie. It is a LOT of work and it takes time! If you want your students to use imovie or blogging as one of the means for them to apply and to demonstrate their learning effectively…..teach them HOW to use their new techie-tool first. Whose job is it to teach them that new techie-tool? ….Yours and mine.

We’ve started a project in middle school tech classes creating educational videos for lower school students. Want to learn to tie your shoes? How about bicycle safety rules? We’ll be using Windows Movie Maker, iMovie, and Animoto with Flip video cameras to put together fun ways to teach a wide variety of topics. A couple of videos were shown as inspiration…a Dewey Decimal system rap and an Animoto video on banned books.

I know I’ll always remember the Bill on Capitol Hill and Inter-planet Janet thanks to Schoolhouse Rock (yes, I’m showing my age). Here’s hoping some of these student-produced videos will do the same for their classmates at Episcopal School. Keep an eye out on our website and Facebook and twitter links to see when the videos are ready.

“Come on, Tom. It’ll be fun!”, I pleaded. “It’s just you and me. I’ll set up my camera, and you grab your meat, all nine pounds of it.”

Fits of laughter.

“Ok, I’ll take my big cannon and show you who’s boss.” Tom cajoled.

More laughter and innuendo.

The buzz of the evening wore off, but the playful conversation lingered in my head. Was he ready for his close up? Yes, actually he was. While I set up the tripod, he cleared the counter and set up an array of spices and secret ingredients for we were making an instructional video. Not the type Carrie Prejean would record but an honest to goodness How To video for making jerky.

I should call him One Take Tom for he could expound on the subject without missing a beat. It was hard to decide what should fall to the cutting room floor, or be deleted via iMovie. He’s my husband, and I felt a bit guilty omitting recorded episodes of meat grinding, salt sprinkling, and the tearing open of hot pepper packets. But cut I did, and replaced with photos overlaid with text. Even with all the snips, the video runs nearly seven minutes long. I’ll post the YouTube link below for those interested in jerking their meat.

With Mommy and Daddy making videos, it seemed natural when my seven year old asked to record her recipe for a soda drink. She wrote down her ingredients, sending Tom to the store for more Diet Coke. She had plenty of Pepsis which are on hand for guests. Her little sister was her lovely assistant, nodding her head and chiming in at just the right moment. I think my girls had a lot of presence for seven and four. Who else but a child would combine the two powerhouses of cola?

This past summer I took a trip to Drummond Island with a few of my friends and our Jeeps. Here’s a short video highlighting some of the best moments had by Travis Holland and his TJ, Ansel.

This isn’t the first time I’ve edited video – nor will it be the last. I got my start editing video a few years ago when I was playing around with iMovie on my MacBook. At the time, of course, I needed a bit of guidance from a peer of mine, but after about 15 minutes of training, iMovie became a second nature to me.

Since then, I’ve used iMovie to create a few slideshows and some videos for class, ranging in length from a few minutes to over 40 minutes. With iMovie, the majority of everything you need to do is point, drag or click, and to be honest – I find it easy, but tedious work. And as a further result of the tediousness of it, I frequently become irritated, especially when it comes to syncing audio and video tracks.

I have found, however, that the only time I am bothered by editing video is when it’s video that I didn’t shoot or have no interest in. For example, the video I edited for this project combines two of my loves: Jeeps and gadgetry/technology. It was captured during a Jeep trip to Drummond Island by myself and my friend Neall Dollhopf, during which we spent four days navigating some of the most difficult terrain the Upper Peninsula has to offer.

In the end, I know I’m going to continue to edit video for years to come and that it will become easier with time, for I find it captures memories better than still photography, and, as they say, practice makes perfect!

Can your photo gallery be successfully transitioned.

It does not have to be an overly complicated investigate piece.

Where are people? What are they interested/concerned about?

This project is designed to get used to the camera and iMovie.

Does not necessarily have to be Lewis University related.

You can make a boring topic exciting

Be creative as you are confident being

Requirements

3 1/2-5 minutes in length.

Keep it simple!

More than a home movie, but not a full blown news package

Some basic storytelling elements

Have a theme

Narration is not required but it needs to tell a story

Music is required

(copyright free)

Tips

Video taping is the shortest part of the project

Editing is time consuming and will always take long than you expect

Plan on shooting 20-25 minutes of video for a 5 minute project

Better to have too much than too little!

Scripts aren’t required but you should write out a plan

Try to tape in sequence

Make sure you are telling a story!

Subjects need permission before being recorded

It is journalistically not ethical to be staging scenes, it should be candid

Hello people of planet Earth and welcome to our second post of the month. It is called: How to Make

Hello people of planet Earth and welcome to our second post of the month. It is called: How to Make a Movie.

You will need:

A camera that can take videos with a USB port.

A USB cable.

Video Editing Software. (e.g.. Windows Movie Maker, iMovie)

A Computer.

In your script you should include:

Setting.

The camera shots you want to take.

Your cast and crew. (Actors, Director, Producer)

What you want your characters to say and do.

Now you need to write your script and decide where you want to film your movie; a studio, a field, a house? Have a look at the effects that your video editing software provides so you have an idea what it will look like once you add your video.

Once you have written your script and you are sure there are absolutely no faults at all. It is time to find actors and actresses to play the character parts. If you do not already know actors then you need to audition them. You should advertise wherever is possible and legal. You need to give the actors a copy of the scripts and they need to memorize their lines. Give them a couple weeks to learn them.

Now you are ready to film your movie. You may not get it correct first time so this is when you take another take (a take is when you start filming and get it wrong then restart it). Once you have completed the filming, you have to download the video footage onto your computer. Find the USB socket on your camera and put the other end into the USB socket in your computer. Select the option that allows you to save them in a file on your computer.

Now open up your video editing program and import the footage into the program and select which transitions and effects that you would like to use. When you’re done, why not upload your video onto a video editing site like YouTube or VideoJug or post it onto your website.

I hope you enjoyed this post. Catch Ya L8r!

This was a steady by not overly busy shift. I girl that is working on a movie for class is needing some help editing. She came in and I was able to get some of it done but she said she had to be somewhere and would come back tomorrow after 3. The project is saved in imovie as shooting 1. The other part stills needs to be imported from the tape. After the edit is done she would like the two parts to be put on two different DVDs. She will probably be present so she will be able to tell what needs to be edited out for each part.

Choosing a “Just Right” Book Digital storytelling is a new concept to me, and it really

Choosing a “Just Right” Book

Digital storytelling is a new concept to me, and it really made me think about my classroom, and how things could change slightly to reach out to different students. I am always thinking about differentiation, and how different students have different needs. Kids that totally tune out during Math discussions are completely intrigued by a good picture book. I can see how digital storytelling can be another tool to “include all”. I love plugging in my Smartboard and connecting to a good book online (Tumblebooks). Kids love stories … and there is a lot to learn from them.

When you think about it, this whole concept goes back in time. Silvia Tolisano, on her blog, says that

Storytelling is also an ancient form of teaching . Before books, reading and writing became widely spread and available, oral storytelling was the only form the wisdom and knowledge of the people were passed down from elders to children

It’s true, and explains why it seems so natural. Browsing through her blog, this has made me think of ways I can use digital storytelling in the classroom. Ways that will involve more kids, engage them, hopefully excite them. Our current FOSS Science unit is Earth Materials. I am already taking tons of pictures, and what better way to summarize their learning than by having each group complete a digital story of the process they have gone through, starting with the analysis of mock rocks, to a scratch test, and finally study of calcite and granite. Photo evidence can be collected along the way, and when the unit is complete, students will summarize their learning. Or even better yet, our next Writing unit is personal narratives. Using photos and iMovie will definitely engage all of my reluctant writers … they won’t even know they are writing as they work through a simple storyboard, knowing that part of the end product will be a digital story!

OK. Back to our group’s project. Like anything else that is tech based, I wanted to make sure that it was relevant to what I was doing in the classroom, supported student learning, and wouldn’t take up a ton of time. How many projects have I got all excited about in the past, only to have them suitable and “fun” for someone my age, but for students, confusing and frustrating …

Outline A Story Idea:

So, we brainstormed possible topics, and then came up with the following story idea:

How to Choose “Just Right” Books

We then developed a simple storyboard on paper which outlined 8-10 sequenced steps, much like procedural writing.

Media to capture the story:

Once our ideas were agreed upon, we needed to pick the right tool to capture our story. We first turned to a FlipCam, thinking that video was the way to go. Capturing the footage wasn’t as issue, but loading it into our laptop was for some reason. After some delay and a “crash”, we took a step back and simplified things. Still images was our alternative, and we mapped out where the pictures would be taken, the main character (thank you Teddy Bear), and any supporting props we would need in the library.

Tool used to build the digital story:

After all the photos were taken, we loaded them into iPhoto and then iMovie. Once our iMovie project was loaded and ready to go, with clips put in place and some simple titles, we added some audio (nice work Dan) to go along with the clips, as well as some background music. Our finished product was excellent. It will (I am sure) get the message across, and I can’t wait to show it to my students. I also think that it will get them thinking about little projects they could attempt, which focus on the concept of a “digital story”.

Finally, in planning future digital story projects (and anything to do with technology really), I found the following outline posted by Jennifer New really useful:

Learn from what you watch.

See technology as a storytelling tool, not as a teaching goal.

Allow your students to push you (and lead you).

Learn by trial and error.

Give your students freedom, but hold them accountable.

Consider yourself the executive producer.

Don’t forget to celebrate your students’ work!

It’s small (probably half the size of a regular point-and-shoot) takes an SDHC memory card, runs on batteries, and fits into a waterproof housing – all with an affordable price tag of $189.

Over the next hour of so, my camera captured approximately 1400 images as I headed off the trails, onto the roads of Walnut Creek, through the city of Concord, before the memory card filled up cutting off the camera at dusk as I approached Pittsburg. I had another 45 minutes left to ride (over the last grueling hill in the dark), but I figured my GoPro captured enough images to check out later that evening.
