The consequences of Obama’s 35 percent tariff on imported Chinese tires are now starting to become apparent. An Associated Press article yesterday (via Pushing Possibilities) identified a few of the explicit and implicit consequences of the tariff.

Explicit costs include:

Under the government’s new tariff, which went into effect in September, a set of Chinese tires that would have cost $280 now cost nearly $100 more.

Implicit costs include:

Jennifer Stockburger, a tire test engineer for Consumer Reports, says six of the top ten all-season tires recently tested by the magazine were made in China by major manufacturers.

To calculate the true cost of the tariff, Pushing Possibilities conducted a cost-benefit analysis:

17% of the tire market is made up of Chinese tires.  Tire sales for 2008 was around $27 billion, which means that about $4.6 billion is Chinese tires. With an average price of $280 for Chinese tires pre-tariff, the total quantity of Chinese tires sold would amount to 16.4 million.  With a $100 price increase, assuming that domestic tire price increases offset the tariff increase, U.S. consumers are expected to lose out on a net savings of over $1.6 billion.  And that of course does not take into account the implicit cost of quality loss.

The tariff was expected to stop the loss of employment in the U.S. tire industry.  By assuming there would be a benefit of saving 5,000 jobs in the tire industry, even at the median U.S.  income, that only amounts to a very large estimate of over $250 million of saved income.

Therefore, Obama’s tire tariff cost the U.S. over $1.35 billion dollars.

I’ve been meaning to comment about this since September, but I’ve been busy (and lazy).

So back in September, Obama passed a bill making it illegal to sell “flavored cigarettes”. As a Djarum Black smoker (on occasion), this broke my heart.

I’ve read two different reasons for the ban – 1) flavored cigarettes encourage underage smoking, and 2) most flavored cigarettes aren’t made in the US, therefore all the US gets is sales tax from the sale.

Here are the Smoker’s Hack arguments:

1) When teens start smoking, they usually steal cigarettes from their parents. What parents smoke flavored cigarettes? (Besides gay goth parents)

2) Flavored cigarettes are EXPENSIVE! If teens are going to spend their money, it’s going to be on cheap cigarettes like Basics.

3) If the US doesn’t like the import of these cigarettes, then they need to step up and make a good product. I love supporting the US – so get on it.

BUT – get this – MENTHOLS aren’t banned.

Why not menthols? Last time I checked – MINT was a flavor. Kools and ‘Ports are cheaper than cloves, easier to get than cloves, and more influential people smoke menthols than cloves.

I wonder……

I don’t really see an export function for Evolution. I do see an import function.

Microsoft is so rotten, I tried to export from Outlook, and it says I need some install disk with an add on,… so I went to my gmail, did an outlook compatible export, and the import was useless. BUT when I did a gmail VCARD export, that reads in just fine to Evolution.

Now, IF I found a machine with the proper Outlook Microsoft add-in, then I could synchronize my Blackberry to Outlook, and export to Ubuntu’s Evolution e-mail client.

'Futures trading in rice, sugar and pulses should be banned'

‘Futures trading in rice, sugar and pulses should be banned’:

A parliamentary panel today suggested that futures trading should be banned in case of wheat, rice, sugar and some pulses till the country becomes self sufficient in these food items.

The Estimates Committee asked the government to bring a new legislation to control the retail prices of essential commodities like rice,wheat, pulses, edible oils, sugar, milk and vegetables.

On futures trading, the report said: “Since food security of the country is at the stake, the Committee recommends that futures trading in wheat, rice, tur dal, urad dal and sugar should be banned till the country achieves self-sufficiency in the production of these items on a continuous basis”.

In Other major Commodities Updates we can see exports of Spice declining and on the other hand price of pulses rising up 80% in a year time.

Spice exports decline 1.3% in April-October:

Exports of spices fell 1.3 per cent in volume and 1.6 per cent in value during the April-October period of the current financial year.

According to the latest estimates of Spices Board, total exports in the period were 280,885 tonnes valued at Rs 3,031.59 crore against 284,560 tonnes valued at 3,080.25 crore in the same period last year.

Pepper exports suffered a serious setback as the figures dropped to 11,500 tonnes valued at Rs 179.16 crore as against 14,750 tonnes valued at Rs 246. 70 crore in the same period last year.

Export of chilli also declined to 100,500 tonnes valued at Rs 706.50 crore as against 121,500 tonnes valued at Rs 660.17 crore.

Coriander exports had a better performance at 25,250 tonnes valued at Rs 128.12 crore against 17,100 tonnes valued at Rs 116.80 crore.

Pulse prices rise up to 80 per cent in one year:

The government today said prices of pulses have surged by up to 80 per cent in the national capital over the last one year.

While prices of tur have gone up by 80 per cent in the last one year to Rs 90 a kg, that of moong dal surged 74 per cent to Rs 82, according to the data presented by Food and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.

Even import of about 16 lakh tonnes of pulses between April and October has not eased pressure on the prices, the data showed.

Not just pulses, prices of sugar have almost doubled to Rs 38 a kg.

It is the export of goods and SERVICES to the world, developed or otherwise, that the United States deems to be prima facie of most importance. For it is the measurement of future demand that will lay the ground work for additional stimulus measures applied to targeted sectors of the US economy that will lay the ground work for a sustainable recovery with job creation by small to medium sized companies deemed suitable to be large companies when the Venture Capital market sees suitable risk reward profiles emerge.  Be of no doubt there will be additional stimulus measures and your sleepless nights shall stay your cheery friend for at least the next 36 months.

Det er lykkedes for en lille gruppe embedsmænd i EU’s toldkommision at gennemføre en stramning af toldtarif 97.05, på en måde så det her efter stort set er umuligt at importere køretøjer fra lande uden for EU toldområde til den hidtige takst.

Når en hobby lider druknedøden

Stramningen af 97.05 er sket helt på embedsmandsniveau, altså uden indblanding fra folkevalgte politikere, med det formål at ensrette toldreglerne i alle medlemslandende.

Da den nye fortolkning af 97.05 er sket i blandt embedsmænd i kommisionen, er der ikke dukket noget op til overfladen hvor organisationer som f.eks. FIVA har kunne nå at opsnappe at der blev arbejdet på noget der kunne have indflydelse på vores alle sammens hobby. Derfor har FIVA ikke haft mulighed for at gøre indsigelser, og formuleringerne er ene og alene et resultat af kommisionens arbejde.

Et kig ned ad siden med den nye fortolkning afslører da også at dette makværk, er et embedsmandsværk uden nogen som helst realitetssans.

Således lyder de nye regler man skal opfylde for at få sit veterankøretøj ind til den sædvanlige toldsats.

Denne position omfatter motorkøretøjer, der er:

 — i original stand og uden væsentlige ændringer ved chassis, styre- og bremsesystem, motor osv.

— mere end 30 år gamle og

— af en model eller type, som ikke længere produceres.

 Motorkøretøjer anses imidlertid for ikke at have historisk eller etnografisk værdi og er undtaget fra denne position, hvis de kompetente myndigheder fastslår, at motorkøretøjerne ikke illustrerer et væsentligt trin i menneskets udvikling eller ikke belyser en periode i denne udvikling.

 Sådanne køretøjer skal også besidde de fornødne egenskaber for at kunne indgå i en samling og derfor:

 — besidde en vis sjældenhedsværdi

— normalt ikke anvendes i overensstemmelse med deres oprindelige formål

— er genstand for en specialiseret handel, der finder sted uden for den normale afsætning af lignende brugbare genstande

— har en betydelig værdi.

 Som samlerobjekter af historisk værdi betragtes også:

a) motorkøretøjer, der — uanset fremstillingsåret — bevisligt er blevet anvendt ved en historisk begivenhed

b) væddeløbskøretøjer, der bevisligt er blevet tegnet, bygget og anvendt udelukkende til konkurrenceformål, og har opnået betydelige     resultater ved prestigefyldte nationale eller internationale motorvæddeløb.

 Genstande af den art, der anvendes som dele eller tilbehør til nævnte motorkøretøjer, tariferes i denne position, hvis de i sig selv er samlerobjekter, uanset om de er bestemt til montering i de pågældende køretøjer.

 Bevis herfor kan aflægges i form af behørig dokumentation, fx leksika eller fagbøger eller erklæringer fra anerkendte eksperter.

 Ovenstående bemærkninger gælder med de fornødne tillempninger også for motorcykler.

 Undtaget fra positionen er efterligninger (kopier) af originalmodeller (almindeligvis kapitel 87)

I den tid jeg har haft plads ved dette tastatur med fast forbindelse til redaktionen på Klassisk Bil & Mc, der har jeg den ene gang efter den anden kastet mig over Skat og deres medarbejdere hver gang der har været lidt optræk til bare det mindste fra deres side. Jeg nævner i flæng : Modep-systemet (Fejl-fyldt sikkerhedsventil), Brændstofafgifter (En forglemmelse), partikelfiltre (Strafafgift på noget der ikke duer), Ladlåg på Chevrolet SSR (En kæmpe sag for Skat), Veteranbiler som kontrolgruppe (Vi ved ikke hvad vi leder efter, men vi skal nok finde det!) Ikke fordi at det har hjulpet noget, jeg er ikke jo ikke nogen Kåre Quist, men som en arrig lille terrier der hænger i buksebenet ,så skal jeg nok gøre hvad jeg kan!

Så det kom nok ikke som nogen overraskelse for Skats pressetjeneste, at de havde mig i telefonen mandag morgen, efter de havde sat hele veteranhobbybevægelsen i brand en fredag d. 20/11, hvor ovenstående blev offentliggjort på Skats hjemmeside.

Jeg blev da også stillet videre til den relevante konsulent, som kunne oplyse mig om at nok var han den som dels havde været med til at udarbejde dette, og nok skulle han være med til at administrere reglerne, men han kunne ikke fortælle mig hvordan. Han kunne heller ikke fortælle hvilke køretøjer der kunne godkendes, eller hvilke kriterier der kunne ligge til grund, han viste heller ikke hvilke eksperter som Skat ville anerkende, han var ikke en gang sikker på at når først en Pispot årgang nittenhundredeoggammel var kørt igennem og godkendt at så ville en magen til automatisk også blive godkendt!!

Der er rigtig mange aspekter i dette her, og Skats medarbejdere er fuldstændig rådvilde, de har slet ikke nogen som helst anelse om hvordan de skal gribe det her an, og det er dem der skal gribe det an! Mærk dig mine ord : Du skal ikke gøre noget som helst andet end at indfortolde dit køretøj under 97.05 som du har gjort hele tiden!!!! Såfremt selvfølgelig at du mener at du har argumenter der holder i forhold til ovennævnte regelsæt.

Dette regelsæt skulle nu gerne være ens i alle 27 medlemslande, men ind til videre har der været forskellige måder at reagere på. I Sverige der har de f. eks. besluttet at køre videre med den gamle ordning indtil de har styr på det nye regelsæt, sådan kan det også gøres!

Jeg ved at der arbejdes fra mange sider på at få ændret dette regelsæt til noget der kan bruges i praksis. Såvel MhS som FIVA er sat på sagen. I en sag som denne med så mange spegede ender, der er der kun en ting der er helt sikker, det er at på Klassisk Bil & Mc’s Chihuahua redaktion der har vi bidt os fast i alle de ankler vi kan komme i nærheden af.

Mit der Globalisierung der Wirtschaft haben sich auch die Verwaltungsstrukturen der Unternehmen über die Welt verbreitet. Management ist zu einem weltumspannenden Schlagwort geworden und bestimmt die Handlungsweise von Amerika bis Asien.

Organisieren, koordinieren, kommandieren, kontrollieren – die hölzerne, inzwischen weit verbreitete Sprache der Wirtschaftstechnokraten kündet von unfehlbarer Verwaltungseffizienz. Allerorten macht sich der neue Glaubenssatz von Industrialisierung und Verwestlichung breit. Von Stanford bis Tokio, von Madrid bis Dakar, von Athen bis zu den Pariser Vorstädten – überall befindet man sich im “Reich, in dem die Sonne nie untergeht”, im allmächtigen Managementimperium.

„Management“ heißt der kommunikationswirksame Verkaufsschlager der westlichen Industrieländer. Hinter dem Zeitgeist-Konzept verbirgt sich ein uralter, der westlichen Tradition entsprungener Begriff, der sich ursprünglich auf Haus, Familie, Gerätschaften und Haushaltsführung bezog.
Von Ökonomen aufbereitet und mit einer wissenschaftlich-technischen Aura versehen, wurde „Management“ zur Wirtschaftsdoktrin, zu einem Propagandainstrument der neuen Globalisierung eines Marktes ohne Grenzen.

Genau wie die großen religiösen und politischen Imperien ist auch das weltweite Management ein Teil der Geschichte. Wer den Versuch wagt, die Entwicklung der Gesellschaft über einen sehr langen Zeitraum nach dem Muster der Erdgeschichte zu analysieren, wird auf die „geologischen“ Schichten einer Zeitarchitektur stoßen, die den Ist-Zustand der Zivilisationen in sich tragen. Traditionen überlagern sich wie Sedimente, auf deren Oberfläche jeweils eine neue Epoche entsteht, die dessen harrt, was unausweichlich auf den Menschen zukommt.

Jede Form von Modernität ruht daher gewissermaßen auf einer verschütteten Vergangenheit, die sich der Mensch in Mythen oder wissenschaftlichen Deutungen zu erklären versucht. Doch um sich mit der Endlichkeit abzufinden, sie gewissermaßen zu bezähmen, bedarf eine menschliche Gesellschaft der Fähigkeit, die Schattenlinie zu erkennen, die jene Momente markiert, an denen Unumkehrbares geschieht. So gesehen, ist die lange Geschichte einer Zivilisation ein einziges, aus Schriftsedimenten bestehendes Textkompositum, durchzogen von eben dieser Schattenlinie, die eine nie endende Inszenierung der Zeit gestattet, eine Untiefe der Erinnerung, die ihr Spiel mit der Wirklichkeit treibt und dem Unsagbaren huldigt.

Der Film versteht sich als eine Reflexion über den globalisierenden Westen. Er will an der Oberfläche der Sedimentschicht unserer Epoche den Moment entschlüsseln, der eine neue Qualität gegenüber den Brüchen und Übergängen der Vergangenheit darstellt: Wir leben heute in einer Ideenwüste leben, die aus dem Irrglauben geboren wurde, dass die Menschheit – unter der Wirkung der wissenschaftlich-technischen Wirtschaftsallmacht – zu einer dem Glück geweihten und von allen Zwängen befreiten „Post-Menschheit“ mutiert.

Laut diesem neuen Glauben befinden sich die desaktivierten, zu bloßer Folklore verkommenden Zivilisationen auf dem Wege der Selbstvernichtung. Damit erübrigen sich die Analyse des Textkompositums der Gesellschaft und die Suche nach der Schattenlinie, auch ist es nicht mehr nötig, eine Gesellschaft mit ihren unfassbaren Geheimnissen, ihrer Verletzlichkeit begreifen und ihr schöpferisches Potenzial und ihren Umgang mit den ihr eigenen Todestrieben erkennen zu wollen.

Die Arbeitsthese dieses filmischen Essays ist ein Satz, den Jean Paulhan in einer Abhandlung über die kubistische Malerei verwendete: „Entfernt die Bäume, die mir den Blick auf den Wald verstellen.“ Diese Metapher aus dem Pflanzenreich habe ich mir zum Grundsatz gemacht, denn unserer Zeit fehlt es an Erklärungen; ein Defizit, das durch die Fragmentierung und Abschottung des Wissens weiter akzentuiert wird. Doch genau diese Erstarrung hindert uns daran, eine Welt zu begreifen, die aus den Fugen gerät, aber nach wie vor in tief wurzelnden, noch immer wirksamen Traditionen verankert ist. Manche dieser Traditionen sind im Untergang begriffen, andere aber trotzen der Gleichschaltung durch die westlichen Systeme.
In dieser Partie mit unsicherem Ausgang ist das weltweite Management – vom Westen als reines Instrument der Vereinheitlichung mittels wissenschaftlich begründeten Verwaltens konzipiert – ein neuer Einsatz/Trumpf.

Wie bereits frühere Filme des Autors stellt auch „Dominium Mundi – Die Weltherrschaft des Managements“ von Wirtschafts- und Gesellschaftswissenschaftlern, Biologen und anderen zementierte Gewissheiten infrage. Die Methode des Films besteht nicht darin, sein Sujet – die Funktionsweise einer Zivilisation – zu zerpflücken und zu zerstückeln. Vielmehr seziert er es in der Manier des Kubismus: aus allen Perspektiven, von innen und von außen.

Grundansatz und Anliegen des Films ist es, die Fähigkeit zum Widerstand und die Fortdauer des „Materials Mensch“ sowie die immer währenden Widersprüche, die gewaltigen industriellen Umbrüche und die poetischen Rückzugsmöglichkeiten aufzuzeigen, die ein Film greifbar machen kann, wenn er mit der Gründlichkeit einer literarischen Erzählung vorgeht. Formal handelt es sich bei dem Film also nicht um ein Lehrstück, sondern um die Enthüllung miteinander verquickter Fragestellungen, die aus einem ganz einfachen Grunde undurchsichtig und schwer zu umreißen sind: Denn was der Westen vom Westen nicht wahrnimmt, kann auch in unsere Analysen nicht einfließen.

Considered to be both a milestone in shooter design and one of the toughest games in the genre, Radiant Silvergun comes courtesy of Japanese developer Treasure. Released only in Japan, Radiant Silvergun offered two modes, Arcade and Saturn mode. The former is all about intense 2D shooting action, while Saturn Mode adds a storyline to the mix and features anime-style characters and voice overs. Radiant Silvergun’s most interesting feature is that it did away with the power-up system so prevalent in 2D shooters and instead offered a choice of attacks — and combos between them. From standard lasers, to split shots, tracking fire, homing blasts, rear attacks, lock-on laser, and the Radiant Sword that can act both as shield and smart bomb, players have to choose the right attack for the right enemy to make it through.

Ok, till now it was totally clumsy to me that what the heck is CLASSPATH and what is the relationship between CLASSPATH and packages. Now I guess I have a little understanding on it.

CLASSPATH: Java CLASSPATH is the PATH or location or directory where java run-time system looks for CLASSES or PACKAGES, where classes are located.

Packages: Packages may be compared to folders where different class files are located. To indicate that a class file belongs to that package we need to write the following statement at the beginning of that file:

To import a package we need to write:

import pkg1.pkg2.classname;

Now let’s see an example. Open the command prompt and set the CLASSPATH to

by this statement we are telling the JRE to look for clases in the C:\ directory and its subdirectory. Now create two files in following directories:

These two statements binds each class to the specified Package:

Also note the use of import. It tells One to use the Two class file from twoPack package. Here CLASSPATH plays the role to where from start searching for classes.

This is needed to do so because now One belong to package onePack and this is its fully-qualified class name.

CHANGING THE CLASSPATH:

By changing the CLASSPATH we can put our packages in any directory and import them as we like.

Let us put twoPack folder in D:\ directory. Now we need to change our CLASSPATH as

C:\>set CLASSPATH=.;C:\;D:\;

Recompile One to let it know the new location of Two.class file. Now type the command:

C:\>java onePack.one

Hope it runs successfully. Hence we imported our needed class twoPack.Two from a different directory and used it.
