I’ve recently been given the opportunity to really test out a Mac and compare it to my Windows

I’ve recently been given the opportunity to really test out a Mac and compare it to my Windows 7 PC and here are a few things I found.

My First Impression:
Wow this is hideous. I’m not one to really care about how an operating system looks as long as it works well, however, over the past few years, I’ve become more and more comfortable with my Windows Vista/Windows 7 look. The transparent windows and stunning Visual effects have really gained on me over time.

Features:

The Dock/Superbar

In past versions of Windows, Mac has certainly one-upped Windows with the Dock, however with the “Superbar” in Windows 7 (which may have been an idea stolen from Mac) Microsoft now has a chance in this race. It wasn’t long ago when I left my Facebook up in an Apple store and was quite surprised to see my status when I got home. I feel that I may have left it up because that window looked like nothing more than another icon on the dock. I imagine that this is something that Mac-users get use to, however, I MUCH prefer the Windows 7 method of organizing open windows and icons. If a window on the taskbar is open, it has a luminescent box around it. If a window is open on a Mac’s dock, it looks just like every other icon.

Finder/Indexing

One of my favorite things in Windows Vista/7 has been the incorporation of indexing into the start menu. This was another thing that was claimed to be stolen from Mac, however, I feel that that is a total lie. I have always been amazed with the search results found in the Windows start menu (like typing scarlet and finding every picture of my mom), however, I was overwhelmed with the search results I found in the search function in the top right corner of a Mac. It started out telling me a definition of the word for which I searched, then split all of the files into different categories by file types (which is also done in Windows). The only real thing that makes Mac’s finder better, is the definition, however, that is one thing that isn’t found in Windows, and small improvements like that really add up.

Dashboard Widgets/ Desktop Gadgets

Another thing claimed to be stolen from Mac (you may here me referring to that a lot in this article) is the incorporation of gadgets in windows. Gadgets are found on the desktop on Windows, and Widgets are found in the Dashboard on Mac. I find that it is much more convenient to have these tools on the desktop so that you can just minimize a window and get to them all. Plus, it’s really convenient to be able to use a window and a gadget hand-in-hand, which can’t be done in a Mac because you have to open the Dashboard, not just drag a winow beside the gadget like you can in Windows. Plus, a recent improvement in Windows 7 allows you to view all of your gadgets without even going to the desktop or opening something new. You do this by just hovering your mouse above the lower left-hand corner of the screen, which allows you to peek at all of your gadgets, which I find really useful, because I have an RSS, Twitter, and Facebook gadget on my desktop, and would like to see if anything catches my interest without minimizing any window. There are, however, less gadgets to choose from and download in Windows Vista/7 than there are in Mac.

One thing that I would never be able to get use to is the lack of third-party application support. I have so many third-party programs on my computer that if I removed them all, it would probably clean up about half of my hard drive. This is one thing that Apple will neverbe able to measure up on. I also would like to be able to replace a piece of hardware with whatever I want. Not necessarily something made by Apple.

As for Viruses, I pretty much have no comment. If there were NEAR as many mac-users as PC users, there would probably be more people to generate viruses (though I don’t have an eye to see into alternate realities). Also, I don’t get viruses, and I use a PC. Microsoft Security Essentials has really come through for me, and it is made by the “dreaded” Microsoft.

I use a Dell Studio 1555 with 4 gb of RAM, 2.1 gHz processor, a high definition graphics card, and 320gb of hard drive space. I’m fairly certain that my PC will run just as fast as any Mac out there once it starts up. If I decide I want to go out and spend a few thousand dollars on a PC, it will more than likely startup just as fast, if not faster, than a Mac, and it will probably zoom through everyday tasks.

As for features, Mac and PC are just about tied in the race, however, one thing that will always keep me on a PC is the simplicity of EVERYTHING. Mac has nice hand gesture capabilities, however with the help of third-party software, I have the same gestures on my computer. Aero features (snap, shake, peak, and flip 3-d) are now a necessity for my daily computing. I now use them on a daily basis. Any feature that is on a Mac, can be added in about 10 minutes by downloading on a PC. You can’t say the same for a Mac because of the poor third-party software support.

Awesome! I mean like for real!

Mon expérience “Thanksgiving” a commencé dimanche dernier. Dur. Bref. J’me suis rabattue sur les marrons. Les Harvadiens les avaient pas kiffés. Tant mieux !

Ding Dong. « -Hello. I’m the French friend. -Oh hello, come on in, welcome ! »

Quel accueil ! Puis la jeunesse arrive, mon amie me présente…

(Fail !)

I have now started to read ‘Calvin for Armchair Theologians,’ by Christopher Elwood. I have to admit that I come to this book with a very doubtful attitude. The front cover illustration of John Calvin and the many ‘comic-like’ illustrations throughout the book worry me. I just don’t get a sense that this book is a serious treatment of John Calvin. That is the impression that presents when just looking at the book – I hope to be proven wrong for having ‘judged a book by its cover.’ The illustrations in the book are by Ron Hill, who is apparently a freelance illustrator and cartoonist.

I have to admit that the ‘armchair theologian’ part of the title also gives me a poor impression of the book – it sort of gives me the picture of a guy who loves to watch sport on the TV while sitting in his armchair, while not really taking the sport seriously in his actual life – has nothing to do with it in reality, in that he doesn’t play sport. This is the idea that ‘armchair theologian’ paints for me, which is an approach to theology that is far removed from the Bible’s idea of involvement with the truth.

My parents go through a frenzy of decorating and re-decorating the house in anticipation of guests. There is a whole exercise of cleaning the house, taking out the best linens, changing the drapes and buying special things for the guest. We were managing the impression.

Like all sick cycles, having formed the impression, we had to live to it at every visit. And we were by far the most gracious hosts and the most tired human beings in the planet.

I do get the idea of making things comfortable for the guest, of taking out the fresh linen and adding a vase of flowers by the bedside. But I don’t get the redecorating, the buying of new things, and the other ‘unnatural’ things we put up when we have guests. It was the whole ’script’ we had to follow that bothered me. And yet, the best times I had when visiting other people were times when there was no outlandish show, instead people went on their business like you were part of the family.

It is different to be a consistently clean, fresh and chic in your house from being chic only when guest were around. I enjoy the new things, the decorations, and the beauty of the house when guests are expected, but it makes me wonder why it has to be this way ONLY when guests were around.

Through the years I realized we were managing an impression. We were trying to persuade people that we were intellectual, elegant and sophisticated; even though we were just plain average.

Now, I am learning to simply be consistent. To appreciate that who we are, how the house is, and all the other in betweens is okay and impressions need not be managed. Simply be true.

Invest in Letterheads!

Why should you? Well everything you show or give to a customer makes an impression. The better the impression you make – the better your chances of getting the business.

Having a letterhead may simply set you apart from other people in your industry or trade trying to win the same business. If you present yourself well and leave a printed or handwritten quotation on a letterhead then you look infinitely more professional than someone who seems to pluck a figure from the air and leaves a scrap of paper or better still nothing.

Giving a letter, quotation or estimate on a letterhead shows to your potential customers that you are serious about your business, serious about doing business and it shows that you are organised and professional. In essence it builds credibility.

Giving a customer information on a letterhead builds confidence. It is a legal document that shows your company details, address & phone numbers, VAT number, company registration number or PPS number. It demonstrates that the customer will have some comeback and builds a buffer of security.

Tip: Use your letterhead to provide invoices, statements, letters, instructions, estimates, quotes, information, recommendations, testimonials, notices and letter drops to other local potential customers. This way you can buy in bulk and make substantial cost savings and every piece of information you give a customer has consistency and is constantly placing your brand in the hand of your customer.

I won’t begin this post by telling you what “not to do” because people tend to forget what they aren’t supposed to do and instead follow up by doing that exact forbidden action. So I’ll begin by telling you what I think would benefit you.

Be yourself. There are 6.5 billion people in this world. Why would you try to mirror someone else? Because it’s easier? Is it truly easier to be something/someone that’s unnaturally you? That’s preposterous to say the least.

Today in this day and age, the average human life expectancy is 66 years. This comes out to be 24,090 days. Take that into account. Soak it up. We all have ONLY 24,090 days to live. That doesn’t sound too much does it? That’s because it isn’t.

So ignore those people who snicker at you for doing the things you do and being the way you are. You should be the one snickering because for some odd reason, they can’t figure out who the hell they are.

Be different and be yourself. It’s what’s going to make you stick out like a sore thumb amongst those 6.5 billion people and you’ll be remembered.

Another wonderful Sunday morning spent wandering along the “Deer Trail” in the Bangor Forest, and a couple more impressionistic images captured moving the camera while the shutter was open.

Most of my images in this genre to date have been landscape oriented, but when I saw this scene I knew it was a prime candidate for applying this technique in a portrait orientation.

The leaves strewn across the forest floor added an element of color to the scene that I hoped would provide an interesting foreground, and the lines offered by the tree trunks would hopefully hold the viewer’s interest compositionally. The vertical shape of the image I think also accentuates the lines.

Though I realize that not everyone will like this type of image, I personally enjoy the color palette and find it very pleasing to the eye.

In the second image, I was drawn not only to the large tree in the foreground with the vertical patterns on the bark, but also to the layers of trees that you can see in the background.

As we wandered along the trail, the light would periodically break through the canopy of the forest, and at this time of year the sun is fairly low in the sky offering pretty dramatic side-lighting on the tree trunks. The shadows and highlights on the tree trunks add depth to this image that is crucial to its impact.

I love how the colors and shapes blend together while still maintaining enough of their original form to allow the viewer to understand what they are looking at. I enjoy how what are often complex and cluttered scenes become simplified and distilled to basic elements.
