I saw Avatar in 3D this past weekend and must admit that I did not find it to be very good. My senti

I saw Avatar in 3D this past weekend and must admit that I did not find it to be very good. My sentiment towards this film found an echo in Film Critic Beth Accomando’s review:

So in simple terms: Na’vi are good, scientists mean well, and the military and corporations are evil. And if you don’t know where this will all end then you haven’t been paying attention to movies in the last ten or twenty years.

Right. For a tale that has been gestating since 1992, it’s not fleshed out at all. In what appears to be a passive acknowledgment of such shortcoming, much of the hype for Avatar is on the visuals. The word “impressive” is repeated in practically every review with regards to the film’s visual appeal. But I beg to differ. The way I see it, to evoke admiration you better deliver something grand. Pandora, the planet depicted in the film, nor its inhabitants are that. They are pretty good, but not awesome.

To further explain let me reference other cinematic moments that truly left me in wonderment the first time I saw them. An obvious choice for anyone of my generation is from Star Wars. At the beginning of that film when the Rebel blockade runner first appeared on screen, I recall thinking something along the lines of ‘This is cool!’ When the Imperial star destroyer filled the screen chasing after it, I lost my mind. Another came from Jurassic Park, I was amazed when Sam Neill & Laura Dern hopped out of their vehicle to gawk at the brachiosaurus towering over them. By the end of the scene where the T-Rex escapes its paddock, I was actually white-knuckling the armrests of my seat.

In Avatar there are no moments like the aforementioned. When Sully is introduced to his avatar, my first thought was, “Okay, it’s a blue skinny Shrek.” Most of the military hardware was recycled from Aliens, so nothing wowed me there. And as the expanse of Pandora was revealed, I couldn’t help but remember that I never finished playing Phantasy Star Online for Dreamcast.

I’m certain the level of detail given in rendering the planet & all of its inhabitants is incredibly high, but because the place is completely a figment of James Cameron’s imagination, I can never be an authority on such elements. I knew what spaceships looked like before Star Wars, but George Lucas presented them in a manner that has yet to be rivaled. I knew what dinosaurs looked like, but Steven Spielberg made them genuinely awesome. I have an idea of what other worlds can look like, and James Cameron only adds a slightly new variation to the hundreds of other worlds I’ve been shown since childhood; excessive bio-luminescence.

I think the same can be said of the motion capture animation used. I’ve read that this film pushed the boundaries of motion capture animation and I trust that this is true. But the Na’vi moved as beautifully as I expected them to. Nothing moved about the screen with any more fluidity than in any other motion capture film I’ve seen.

The only real difference I noted was with the treatment of the characters eyes. For example, all of the characters in The Polar Express had dead eyes. The reason for this is we know what a true human look like. In Avatar the solution to the problem—whether it was done knowingly or by coincidence—was to make the characters less human, which made them more visually pleasing.* Mr. Cameron himself explains the phenomena well in this short video at Discovery.com.

In the end, nothing new was introduced to my imagination. There was no revolutionary twist to the age-old allegory of our real world problems. There weren’t even any clever approaches for the use of 3D. As proteinstar so eloquently commented at Accomando’s review:

It was pretty…but stupid.

* The one glaring exception to this, for me at least, was that of Sigourney Weaver’s avatar. Unlike the other actors in Avatar, I am very familiar with what she looks like. This familiarity with her face made her ‘blue skinny Shrek’ avatar appear out right disturbing.

By Con George-Kotzabasis

What a mockery of prowess Clemons makes when he measures its depth with Obama’s “work-the-situation,” i.e., procedural matters, and “basket ball” games. Obama has irremediably failed in all his major foreign policies; in the Middle East, as Clemons himself hints, in his diplomatic overture to Iran, and now in his Copenhagen Climate Accord sans substance and which is no more than a political statement with no bindings. Yet Clemons considers it to be an “impressive” achievement by Obama. Clemons with his “hybrid” realism, to use his term, which like all hybrids is barren, and with his inexorable wishful thinking politics has yet to realize that Obama is one of the most weak and ineffectual presidents and a crashing failure in the sphere of foreign policy if not totally in domestic policy.

And in regards to Copenhagen, Clemons should bear in mind that an alternative to nothing is worse than nothing. Or better still take heed of King Lear that “nothing comes out of nothing.”

The above elicited the following reply from Clemons.

Posted by Steve Clemons, Dec 19 2009, 8:00PM – Link

KOTZ… Not a bad response actually. Look forward to debating soon.

Happy holidays!

The Holidays are upon us and, as such, Keg End returns to WAR!

Those of you that were here for last year should be familiar with how it works. For those who will be spending their first Holiday Season with us, welcome to a Live Event full of toasting, boasting and killing lots and lots of things. hehe

As usual, I’ll update this as I go along and as more is known about the event and any secrets Mythic may have hid in it.

The wheel of the seasons has turned, ushering out the sun’s last warmth with bitter blasts of northern winds. As snow creeps down to block mountain passes and lock the Warhammer world in the icy talons of winter, the citizens of the Old World raise their mugs high; the time of Keg End is at hand. In an epic celebration fraught with boasting, toasting, and epic fireworks, the Dwarfs clear out their stores of ales, beers and other intoxicating beverages in order to bring luck in the New Year and make way for a stock of better, stronger brews.

Best advice: Split up into small groups on each of the respawn points and farm, farm, farm!

The Keg Caches can be found along the PvE roads. There’s anywhere from 4-8 kegs laying around. Smack one with your weapon and it breaks up into a bunch of beer steins. Drink them down and you’re good to go!

The Pony Keg gives a better buff…250% morale gain for 10 seconds.

The King Keg is HUGE! It gives a 400% morale gain buff for 10 seconds.

The Hero Giants can be found in the RvR lakes. You can’t miss them if they’re out. They’re quite large…

I soloed one as a tank, so a couple people should do fine as long as one is tanky. hehe. The one I killed dropped Fireworks and Explosive Stout.

Nice to see that make a return, I’d almost run out of my supply from last year.

It’s also been confirmed that the purple drops come off them as well.

Giant Spawn/Respawn Update: Giant spawn location rules – With the help of Patriotic and crew on Iron Rock, it’s been determined that only 1 Giant spawns per PAIRING at any given time (ie: 1 in Elf, 1 in Dwarf, 1 in Empire). It can spawn in any of the zones in that pairing and there are 2 locations per zone. Once you kill it, it will respawn in 5 minutes at one of the other spawn points in the PAIRING.

Best advice: Split up into small groups on each of the respawn points and farm, farm, farm!

See below for screenshots of the phat lewtz from them.

Rare World Drops

Did you think I’d end the guide without talking about phat lewtz? hehe

With the return of Keg End comes the return of everyone’s favorite loot: The Battlebrew Backpack.

This tasty little item looks great on dwarfs, but even if you don’t want to wear it, you’ll want one in your inventory for it’s special ability. It basically gives you a ranged DoT on a 3 minute reuse timer. Gotta love it. They drop quite frequently off players in Open RvR and Scenarios.

New for this year is the Dwarf Keg Handler for Order and the Goblin Bar-Back for Destruction. They drop off the Giants you find in the RvR lakes. (See the Giant descriptions above for spawn information.)

These little helpers will tote your keg around for you while you go about your business. What a great idea!

Last, but not least, there are purple Live Event Slot Items that drop off the Giants as well. (See the Giant descriptions above for spawn information.) Here are some samples:

Good luck finding everything and, as always…

Have fun!

To put it simply, The xx are an amazing band, they make beautiful and simple songs that have the innocence of Angus & Julia Stone, but with the backing of internet hype like that of Passion Pit. The Angus & Julia Stone comparison I pretty accurate in my opinion and although the two bands styles are different, they have the same innocent “vibe”.

.

The xx - "The xx"

.

2009 has witnessed a number of new and upcoming bands, The xx are one of, if not the best of this years crop of artists. Their rhythms and beats are hypnotic and almost draw you into the music, it’s something that few bands are able to achieve but The xx seem to achieve it without trying. What separates them from a lot of bands is their two singers who are extremely suited to each other’s voice. Without being over the top they sing with a nimble quality and sing what is required for the song to become something they intend it to be.

The album has no real bad songs and is pretty consistent, but if I had to pinpoint one standout song, it would have to be ‘Crystalised’. It’s simplicity is it’s strength and I found it to be extremely catchy, a sure bet for one of my favourite tracks for the year of 2009.

It’s a very weird album to listen to, because a lot of the time you don’t know whether you should be dancing or not. What this creates though is a intrigue in the album and I for one found it to be far more interesting and captivating for it. It’s different to a lot of albums in that way, while other bands are trying to master a popular genre, these guys (and girl) are trying to write music that suits their presumed personalities.

The xx have made an album that has a maturity to the song-writing that is rare in a band that is so early into their career. Their album is one of the best debuts of the decade let alone the year and I really look forward to hearing what the band release next in their career, that has no end in sight.

In terms of a rating, I am going to give it a 9/10. It’s almost to the standard of the very best modern albums and is sure to spark something on the music scene, if it already hasn’t. Go out and buy this album especially if you’re a fan of electronic music, as it may just open your eyes to another aspect of the genre.

Standout Tracks: Crystalised, VCR

Rating: 9/10

One of my favorite quotes of all time is from Pablo Picasso: “Good artists copy. Great artists steal.” And it’s true. Every great artist got his best idea from someone else. This is along the same vein as every note already being sung.

for some lucky recipients

I stole this recipe from Smitten Kitchen. It’s a blog I check obsessively. Deb’s recipes never done me wrong, and I never hesitate to use her recipe for a crowd, even (especially!) if it’s the first time I’ve ever made it. It makes my boyfriend nervous, but I know it will always come out great.

This recipe was special because I was making sure it was Kosher for my boss, who is Jewish. Luckily I was already out of sugar and the like, and I have special dishes just for baking that I don’t let anyone else use. So it’s not like I had to go completely out of my way to make it extra-special just for her. But I would have, because I’m awesome like that.

Did you guys know this symbol stands for Kosher?

Yep, it's true.

Check it out. I bet you eat a lot more Kosher items than you thought.

Smitten Kitchen’s Coffee Toffee x2 is BFN’s Hazelnut Espresso Toffee….because I wanted it to sound impressive.

4 sticks or 16 ounces (!!!!)

1 cup light brown sugar

1 cup white sugar

3 teaspoons molasses (can swap corn syrup or honey)

1/2 teaspoon salt (or a heaping 1/4 teaspoon flaky sea salt)

3 teaspoons instant espresso powder (I used Café Bustelo, which I’m not sure is instant or not, didn’t make a difference in the outcome)

2 cups semisweet chocolate chips, or 6 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped
(I actually probably ended up using about 3 cups, it’s slightly more like a candy bar)

1 cup chopped hazelnuts – or other nut of your choice, but hazelnuts are delicious. (toasted, skinned, cooled, and chopped – yes, it’s a pain in the butt. Do you have a friend or relative who needs an outlet for their anger? Put them to work with a rolling pin or tenderizer.)

Line 2 small baking sheets (mine are 9×13, to fit in my teeny oven) with parchment paper or a silicon mat and set aside.

In medium heavy saucepan with a candy thermometer attached, melt butter, brown sugar, white sugar, molasses, salt and espresso together over together. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally with a whisk (an electric one would be really helpful – I tossed my hand blender because it was a hand-me-down from the early 80s – my hand cramped up doing this manually) until the temperature approaches 250F, at which point you should stir constantly until it reaches 300F-310F or what is known as the Hard Crack Stage.

Pour immediately into the prepared baking sheet — you can spread it more evenly with an offset or silicon spatula, but don’t worry if you have neither. Dump the chocolate chips over the hot toffee and let them sit for a minute. When they look shiny, spread the chocolate over the toffee. Sprinkle the whole thing with the smushed hazelnuts. Then just wait. If you want it to harden faster, cover it loosely with plastic wrap and cram it into your tiny freezer, but do it fast before the other stuff starts falling out.

Nutty...hazelnutty.

Break into pieces and store in an airtight container. If your kitchen runs warm, or has a gigantic leaky radiator in it, you might prefer to keep it in the fridge so the chocolate doesn’t get soft.

Notice how gorgeous the photos are? This is mutually beneficial relationship.

I will give a jar of toffee to whoever can name the movie that the caption from the 2nd photo is from.

50 people 1 question is social experiment and video series exploring peoples answers on different questions. The videos are very positive , you would hear about different dreams , stories , secrets and losses. The videos are impressive , filmed so real and they would make you ask the question yourself.
The question today is : Where would you want to wake up ?
My answer of that simple question : Id like to wake up in my own place in HER arms , hurry up because i dont wanna be late for the job i always dreamed about .

As most of you know by now, Zara is becoming a big name in the fashion world. Bringing the world professional suits, flirty skirts, shirts and trousers in both men’s and women’s collection, this is one name that absolutely will not to be forgotten. Now, Zara is offering shoes that will blow your mind with a variety of colors, styles, sizes, and prices. The creators at Zara have brought something to the table for everyone to try, and have made it possible for just about anyone to walk the street in style with their affordable prices.

Some brand name shoes cost up to five hundred dollars if not more, you can find Zara’s brand name styles for as little as one hundred and sometimes less than that, I’ve seen as low as forty dollars online! However, these aren’t your run of the mill cheap shoes; Zara shoes are gorgeous and can make anyone look good. Zara offers women strapped heeled sandals, thick pumps, flats, and many other various styles. By offering so many styles, Zara is creating something for everyone and gives everyone a reason to check them out.

Zara also offers men’s shoes, and while this collection is less popular, it is still a decent collection. Zara shoes for men offers sandals, traditional laced up sneakers and more unique edgy sneakers for those looking to try a bolder look. The men’s collection of Zara shoes is quickly becoming a big trend, what’s most unique; the Zara trend is to wear sandals with long business like trousers. Shockingly enough, this trend has caught on and looks pretty good on men everywhere.

This season, it seems that Zara is experimenting with flats for both men and women. In bold colors like purple and yellow, both men and women are treading the streets with bold colored flat sneakers that look so awkward, it works for them. That seems to be the Zara way though, they have made a fortune off of making things that just shouldn’t work look fabulous on anyone and they have taken styles that are considered traditionally ugly, and made them stylish. That is what fashion is all about, and that is one of the biggest reasons people are clinging to Zara this season, everyone is oozing wondering what will be next for this daring clothing brand.
