#69: Placebo/Black Market Music (2000) — the decade started with Placebo’s third album. I love the swagger they return with on ‘Taste in Men,’ it sets the tone for the record and shows the band weren’t just going to be one album wonders with ‘Pure Morning,’ and ‘Every You, Every Me,’ off of Without You… Melding their glam influences (sex, drugs, rock n’ roll) with a more straightforward sound and Brian Molko’s lyricism — which now expored more diverse fare (racism, religion, dysfunction). Check out: ‘Passive Aggressive,’ ‘Black-Eyed,’ ‘Haemoglobin.’

#68: Silversun Pickups/Carnavas (2006) — it’s interesting how I got turned on to these guys. I’d actually just started with R.S. and we were analyzing/comparing sales figures from Cold War Kids first record to SSPU. Two completely different bands with two paths in the indie-hipster world. I think SSPU’s are a bit more Americanized with the shoegazer freakouts and the comparison to the Pumpkins and, well heck, radio-friendly. A solid album from start to finish from an SP fan who thinks duplication with an update is the sincerest form of flattery. Check out: ‘Well Thought-Out Twinkles,’ ‘Rusted Wheel,’ and ‘Three Seed.’

#67: Kings of Leon/Only By The Night (2008) — this was the album that KOL officially traded in their indie/hipster rock credits for bonafide American crossover acceptance, something they’d been gunning for since the beginning of their career. But let’s face it, they weren’t ready for it until now. They needed to find the right production (which now paired up the duo of Angelo Petraglia and Jacquire King) and continue in the flow of 2007’s Because of the Times. The result was their first (well deserved) Grammy. Check out: ‘Closer,’ ‘Sex on Fire,’ and ‘Use Somebody.’

#66: Coheed & Cambria/No World for Tomorrow (2007) — though Sony’s decision to put the regular version of this album in a simple slip-sleeve and sell it to fans was appaling to me, I dealt with it on the musical level foremost. C&C came into their own on this album (with little known fact, Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters fame, recorded skins on this record). It’s easy to draw Rush comparisons to this band, but when you get over that ‘hump,’ you realized these guys have the chops and a little updated nostalgia never hurt anyone. There’s still some killer riffs and solo’s any guitar geek would fawn over. Check out: “Feathers,” “The Running Free,” and “Mother Superior.”

#65: Thrice/The Artist & The Ambulance (2003) — 2003 was a bit of difficult year in terms of my focus in Thrice and the genre they represented at the time. This was also the same year as AFI’s Sing the Sorrow, Brand New’s Deja Entendu, Story of the Year’s Park Ave, and the Senses Fail …Depths of Dreams EP. It probably wasn’t until the middle of 2005, rolling into a Denny’s at the wee hours that I recognized the power of this album. It still shocks me the growth this band has exhibited over the past decade, really coming into their own. If you’re looking for the concrete to build a foundation though, this is the one. Amidst jagged guitars there are great signs of life here and a punk spirit alive and well within a bonafide rock band. Check out: ‘Under a Killing Moon,’ ‘All That’s Left,’ and ‘The Artist in the Ambulance.’

#64: Cure/4:13 Dream (2008) — it’s entirely possible this album could rest inside my decade top 100 on the strength of the atmospherics of the first track alone. ‘Underneath the Stars,’ is everything a Cure fan has come to know and expect. After the trainwreck of the self-titled 2004 Ross Robinson (Slipknot, Korn) produced effort, it honestly did take four years to right the ship, strip down and return to the glory of where the decade took shape with 2000’s Bloodflowers. While my boy JB hates ‘The Only One,’ for being too pop – it’s exactly what was so great about Wish-era Cure and F-U-N! ‘The Reasons Why’ was an extremely dark song that spoke to me in a very dark time. For their 13th album, 4:13 Dream is a homerun and Cure fans should rejoice… Check out: ‘Underneath the Stars,’ ‘The Only One,’ and ‘This. Here and Now. With You.’

#63: Black Keys/Attack & Release (2008) — The Black Keys finally came into their own on this release, thanks to some great songwriting and some exciting production by Dangermouse. Such great atmospherics amidst the blues rock here. Check out: ‘I Got Mine,’ ‘Lies,’ and ‘So He Won’t Break.’

#62: In Flames/A Sense of Purpose (2008) — The string of 2008 releases continues as Swedish metal act In Flames hit the countdown with their most commercially accessible album (number nine studio album, for those keeping score at home) to date, though a far cry sales wise from 06’s Come Clarity album. This album is so chock full of that good old driving European death metal sound, thrash and some fantastic keyboards along with some of the cleanest vocals by Anders Friden to date. Check out: ‘Sleepless Again,’ ‘I’m the Highway,’ and ‘Delight and Angers.’

#61: Metallica/Death Magnetic (2008) — from the opening strings of the opening track and the packaging, a Metallica fan knows something is different about this album that wasn’t there over the past 10-15 years. Their first official studio release with Trujillo in the fold and Rick Rubin producing, the well-oiled metal machine that is Metallica is back and on top of its game. The Bay Area Thrashers are back, cleaner and angrier than ever and ready to give us some serious whiplash. Check out: ‘That Was Just Your Life,’ ‘Broken Beat and Scarred,’ and ‘My Apocalypse.’

#60: Death from Above 1979/You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine (2004) — perhaps the best workout album of the decade. Seriously, I discovered these guys on a lark as I noticed they were supporting NIN on their With Teeth tour and I wanted to check them out. I’m glad I did. While their tenure in the decade was short (splintering off into MSTRKRFT and Sebastian Grainger, respectively), You’re a Woman… was one of the most unique sounding punk meets industrial albums to ever come to fruition. They even use cowbell. Check out: ‘Going Steady,’ ‘Black History Month’ and ‘Sexy Results.’

Efter denna vecka är det 2 ½ arbetsvecka kvar tills Pernilla flyttar hem igen… Hoppas det går fort, saknar verkligen att ha henne hemma. Till helgen kommer hon hem, nästa helg åker jag ner igen, helgen efter det så kommer hon hem.. och helgen efter det så åker vi till STHLM och IN FLAMES, blir en skitbra avslutning på Pernillas praktik och denna period.

In Flames avrundar turnén ”A Sense of Purpose” genom tre Sverigespelningar i december.

“Då så mina damer o herrar var det dags att presentera den svenska delen av Taste of Chaos. Vi är oerhört peppade inför dessa spelningar som kanske blir våra sista i Sverige på ett bra tag. Det kommer att bli en grym kväll med många bra band. Hoppas vi ses där!” – In Flames Sedan albumet “A Sense of Purpose” detonerade i landets skivbutiker i april 2008 så har In Flames verkligen tagit ytterligare ett steg i en minst sagt framgångsrik karriär.

Albumet gick rakt in på den svenska album listans första plats, svensk radio tog för första gången på länge till sig musik av lite hårdare kaliber och såväl P3 Guld som Grammis-priser tillföll In Flames. Tillströmningen av publik vid livepremiären på Gröna Lund förra året har bara överträffats av storheter som Bob Marley och Lady Gaga och inte en endaste kvadratcentimeter var ledig under två magiska kvällar i Lisebergshallen likväl som två kvällar på Annexet när In Flames besökte dessa i höstas.

Sommaren kröntes av en unik festivalspelning på Sweden Rock-festivalen där In Flames agerade huvudakt inför över 30 000 lyckliga festivalbesökare. Här skulle historien mycket väl kunna ta slut för den här gången men In Flames kan nu bekräfta att de kommer att göra ytterligare tre spelningar i Sverige för att avsluta turnerandet kring “A Sense of Purpose”. De kommande spelningarna är en del av Rockstar Taste of Chaos, den globala festivalturnén som dragit runt i världen under de senaste fem åren och bjudit sina besökare på dagens hetaste metal, punk och hardcoreband.

Klara för Sverige-datumen redan nu är även det amerikanska metalcorebandet Killswitch Engage. Bandets femte fullängdare kom i juli i år. Producentrollen hade på plattan tilldelats namnkunnige Brendan O’Brien och resultatet blev ett hårt men melodiöst verk i sann Killswitch Engage-anda. Rockstar Taste of Chaos kommer att kompletteras med fler band.

Aj, jag missade bandet. Tyvärr var lokalen full och det verkade inte som om de tänkte släppa in fler. Det var bara att ta sig hem igen. Nästa uppträdande för Dead by April blir som förband till In Flames (lördag 12 december 2009, kl 19.30, Scandinavium). Jag funderar på att gå.

Det är inte några imponerande bra platser kvar :S

Heute war wieder eine meiner verhassten 4-Stunden-Nächte, diesmal so schlimm dass ich unter der Dusche As I Lay Dying¹ hören musste, um irgendwie wach zu werden. Anschließend frühstückte ich mit Musik von In Flames, Kaffee und der Zeitung. Überschrift auf der Titelseite: “Zu wenig Schlaf macht dick und dumm” – Na danke!

Auf der Autobahn war natürlich Stau, und ohne meine Kommolitonen hätte ich mir wahrscheinlich ein Bein abknabbern müssen, um die MuWi-Vorlesung wach zu überstehen.

Die Strecke von der HfM zur Uni haben wir natürlich nicht in den dafür eingeplanten 15 Minuten geschafft, sodass wir etwas zu spät zu Linguistics kamen. Aber doch noch rechtzeitig, um sich in die Anwesenheitsliste einzutragen – und ein Mid Exam zu schreiben. Ich hatte mir natürlich ausgerechnet die Lernmaterialien zum Thema des Tests nicht angeschaut, wär ja auch zu schön gewesen. Naja, muss ich halt gucken dass ich das zweite Mid Exam bestehe…

Und um diese Verkettung von Umständen nun vollends zur Tragödie werden zu lassen, habe ich gerade in Ungedanken, anstatt zwei Spam-Mails zu verschieben, meinen kompletten Posteingang unwiederbringlich gelöscht!

Das klingt jetzt schon nach einem erfüllten Disaster-Tag, aber es ist jetzt gerademal halb 3. Hoffentlich geht der Rest des Tages nicht genauso weiter!

¹eigentlich höre ich ja mittlerweile kaum noch solche Musik, aber es gibt Situationen, da gibt es keine Alternative…

I dag er det fredag, og om et par timer er det helg.
Og jeg kunne ikke fått en bedre start på en dag som denne.

Jeg skal nemlig på konsert likevel, på selveste Luciadagen.

Det blir en lang, men trolig uforglemmelig kveld og jeg kan ikke vente!

Har gått å gleda meg i mange måneder, om ikke uker, til å få se In Flames live igjen. Og ikke nok med det, men Killswitch Engage skulle også være med.
Kunne nesten ikke blitt bedre, for min del i hvert fall.

Men nå har det seg sånn at det er utsolgt.
Typisk min flaks.
Jeg som bare skulle vente til jeg fikk lønn, men det kunne de visst ikke vente på nei!

Jag längtar så förbaskat till julen. Bara december med krispiga träd, hemma i östersund såklart, vore mer än nog. Jag fullkomligt älskar julen. Visst är det stressigt med alla klappar som ska handlas. Men det är just det och allt annat stök som gör julen. Även om jag inte längtar efter att trängas i köer i överfulla varuhus så längtar jag betydligt mer till min och Paulines årliga julbio, som i år verkar bli paranormal activity mot min vilja. (fast fan heta Joel Kinnaman går ju upp i Snabba Cash då!), hennes födelsedag, lussebullar, pepparkakor, julmust, att få umgås med familjen, ja allt du kan tänka dig! Att december i år även betyder att jag får flytta hem gör inte saken sämre. Till julen hör ju även julpynt, vilket många hatar, och visst har även jag lite svårt för allt krimskrams som ska släpas fram. Men det är något speciellt med julpyntade hus som känns hemma och gemenskap. Är rätt dålig på att julpynta hemma dock, mest för att det inte finns så många snygga alternativ. Och traditionellt julpynt passar inte riktigt in i min lägenhet tycker jag. Två vita adventsstjärnor till fönstren är allt som har släppts in. Men idag ramlade jag in på en sida som säljer mer stilrent julpynt som gärna skulle få flytta in. Väggord är något jag verkligen gillar, har två stycken hemma med Love och Lycka på just nu. De här bokstäverna är dock inget väggord utan en ljusstake. Båda två tycker jag är riktigt bra alternativ till de andra lite tacky och gräsliga julpyntet som inte riktigt passar min generation, men mer än gärna får finnas på den riktiga hemmaplan, kommer nog aldrig sluta se mamma och pappas hem som mitt riktiga hem. Andra trevliga saker som händer i December är In Flames konserten, och imorn ska det bokas hotell. En helg med bäddad mjuk hotellsäng och frukost känns verkligen som ett behövligt slut på den här praktiken. Det är vi mer än värda! Ska även försöka hinna med julmarknad på skansen, där de dessutom är luciakröning när vi är där. Annars hoppas jag på att Gröna Lund har något motsvarande till Jul på Liseberg, och att gamla stan är full i ljus. Och detta inlägg kan nog läggas under kategorin äckligt romantiserande och bullmammakäckt. Men jag blir väl lite så när jag längtar Nu ska jag däremot släcka datorn, läsa lite i boken Bekantas bekanta, få ett godnattsamtal och sova. Trött som en jävla gris (och där fick jag tillbaka lite respekt.)

Letztendlich fand ich doch noch die Zeit, vor Wochenbeginn hier einen neuen Eintrag zu verfassen….derzeit geht alles drunter und drüber.

Nach 2 Jahren brachten In Flames 2008 ihr neues Album A Sense Of Purpose auf den Markt. Ihr Genre (Alternative Rock/Metal) wurde damit weiter ausgeprägt, wie man vor allem in den Titeln I’m The Highway und March To The Shore bemerken kann. Den ruhigsten (und längsten) Titel auf dem Studioalbum stellt The Chosen Pessimist dar, erst nach ungefähr 6:20 erreicht der Song seinen Höhepunkt.

Inhaltlich ist es eine Auseinandersetzung des Sängers mit sich selbst.

Er weiß nicht, auf wessen Seite (Liebe oder Hass) er sich schlagen soll, die Frage zerreißt ihn sozusagen innerlich sodass er der Ansicht ist, dass er – egal wie seine Wahl ausfallen wird – nur dabei verlieren kann.

Betrachtet man den Titel von der musikalischen Seite, so stößt man auf eine sehr eingängige, dennoch nicht leichte Melodie, welche mit harten E-Gitarrenriffs im weiteren Verlauf deutlich geprägt wird. Eine entscheidende Rolle spielt dabei auch die Intensität der Instrumente. So lässt sich ein starker Lautstärkeunterschied bei ca. 4:40 und kurz darauf bei ca. 5:00 feststellen, welcher auf eine Veränderung der Lage im Kontext deuten könnte. Die anschließend erneute langsame Passage symbolisiert die Unsicherheit und Zwiespältigkeit des Sängers, bis es zum anhaltenden, beinahe destruktiv wirkenden, Finale kommt, welches aber trotz seiner klaren Melodieführung auf eine Nichtlösung des Konflikts (siehe plötzliches Ende) hindeuten kann.

Bueno, y llegó el momento de presentar el quinto cd de esta banda (una de mis preferidas dentro del Melodic), y segundo cd dentro del blog. Es el turno del Clayman, de In Flames. La verdad es que dentro de la discografía de este grupo, hay muchos cd’s que me llaman la atención, pero bueno, como iré subiendo poco a poco toda la discografía, ya habrá tiempo de dar un repaso a todos.

Como ya he dicho, es el quinto trabajo de éste grupo sueco, hizo aparición en el mercado en el 2000, con sus 8 temas y una portada en la que vemos a “El hombre de Vitruvio” de Da Vinci, un tanto modificado y como no, las llamas, elemento que hace total referencia al grupo. Este disco la verdad es que tiene temas muy llamativos y pegadizos y otro mas discretos pero que su forma y su conjunto son muy buenos.

Comentaré un poco por encima la musicalidad del cd, ya que el estilo de In Flames en este cd queda muy patente, las guitarras aceleradas y los ritmos pegadizos sumados a la voz de Fridén tan Melodic como siempre, sobre todo remarcar lo que he dicho antes, lo de los ritmos pegadizos de algunas canciones y los no tan pegadizos de otras, pero que aun así, son igual de buenas.

En cuanto a canciones pegadizas del álbum, personalmente, opino que escogería Only For The Weak (sin duda), Clay man, Swim, Suburban me y World of  Promises (que está dentro del Bonustrack), en cuanto a ritmos y letra, para mí serían las más pegadizas. Las demás siguen más o menos los mismos parámetros, (ritmos pegadizos y acelerados, voz melódica y gutural (esas mezclas) y el conjunto guitarra-batería tan característico de éste género).

Y bueno, para finalizar, sobre la recomendación de temas, los que ya he nombrado pienso que estarían dentro de esa elección, aunque de todas formas, recomiendo oír el cd entero, como toca, porque ya se sabe, que para gustos…colores.

Y ya sabeis, si os gusta…disfrutadlo.

Dagens musiktips är live spelningen in flames hade på grammisgalan i år. Där de sammarbetar med Timo Raisanen. Bara lyssna och njut.

Been there twice this week for shows, first one Tuesday to see In Flames play with the Between the buried and me, also 3 Inchs of blood. Wonderful show at the Fox Theater yet Anders of In Flames didn’t seem to feel the crowd very well, it was unfortunate but I still loved it, moshed to my favorite song too, ‘Clayman’.

Second, which was tonight, was to see Billy Talent and Poison the Well at the Glass House which was AMAZING show, first time seeing Billy Talent and it was so worth it.

Now I’m thinking of the KMFDM show next month then the Mastadon/Dethklok concert in November, I hope I can go!

Så var man på plats i klyktattarland igen. Åkte tidigt på eftermiddagen igår. Missar en hel kväll pga av Veolias pissiga tidtabell. Det går inte ens något på morgonkvisten, vad händer med alla pendlare? Men det är bara att försöka se det positiva, nästa vecka har jag gjort en tredjedel av min tid här. Tiden rör alltså på sig, trots allt, även om det går sakta, sakta. Men jag hoppas att innan jag vet ordet av det är det december och dags för en välförtjänt helg i Stockholm för att se In flames och umgås på obestämd tid med det bästa jag har. Igår när jag kom ner tittade jag på nyaste Gossip girl, oh my vad bra. Tog och laddade hem alla nya avsnitt av “mina” serier, och vilket bra tidsfördriv när jag har megaångest över vecka, söndag och ensamhet. Dagen har flytit på bra. Det händer verkligen intressanta saker precis hela tiden, trots att jag inte sökte mig till detta område självmant, är jag så glad över att få den här erfarenheten och få se något som faktiskt inte är så uppmärksammat inom socialt arbete. Får åka hem redan på torsdag denna vecka. Hemsk tandläkartid på fredag morgon. Men jag får en natt och en hel dag extra på hemmaplan. På fredagkväll blir det after work med ett gäng härliga själar, och på lördag ska vi ge oss ut i Åre för att fjällvandra. Känner på mig att det kommer bli en kunghelg, vilket gör att man längtar ännu mer! Men ikväll ska jag bara ta det lugnt, imorn ska jag fika med Tess, på onsdag packa och städa ihop, och sen är det ju torsdag och jag får åka hem! Är lite bildfattigt i min blogg nu, men har så jävla seg uppkoppling att det inte ens är värt att försöka, hoppas ni har överseende!
