In my mind, the first thing I’d pack when I decided to go Beijing, was my Feiyues. While these aren’t quite the Chinese version, there’s a certain patriotic sentiment I get when I wear them, even though I’m third generation Singaporean.

This trip was eagerly anticipated for a few months, I was there to hang with my friends Calvin and Kathi, attend Beijing Green Drinks and Beijing Energy Network, and meet up with an environmental NGO. It was for both work and pleasure; to see and experience the lives that my friends were living, and to see what opportunities were there for me. And I loved it!

Everything was so convenient. Getting to Cal and Kathi’s place was a breeze. I took the subway there, and then a short cab ride.

They rent a really nice apartment. There was a really lovely cafe on the premises, which I would frequent, and there were other amenities too. This was my home for 5 days.

This is my friend Cal, he was an awesome city guide, and took me to a couple of sustainability events, as well as to great restaurants, bars, and I even followed him to his workplace for one afternoon and worked out of there.

I wanted to do some cycling in Beijing, so Cal let me have his bicycle and he got hold of an extra bicycle. We cycled on the big roads and also in the hutongs. It had been a while since I’d ridden a bicycle, and I wasn’t quite used to it. It was super tricky in the hutongs, which had lots of pedestrians on the paths, such as unleashed dogs, a lady in a wheelchair, a pregnant lady and children. In the end, I threw in the towel and became the pillon rider on Cal’s bicycle. Here we are, getting the height right for me.

On my last night, Cal and I went to Jiang Hu (江湖) to watch one of his Beijing Energy Network peers perform, and his friends Rob and Julian came to join us afters. When the bar closed its doors, we moved on to Mai Bar for cocktails. It was such a wicked night, I had the best time (yes I was pretty hammered)!

There were a couple of occasions that I had Lijiang cuisine for dinner. I love Lijiang, and absolutely missed their food. I went to In & Out/Yi Zuo Yi Wang (一座一忘) with Kathi, and we had the quintessential cold chickpea noodles (鸡豆凉粉), some beancurd and vegetables. It’s a pretty good restaurant and I enjoyed it very much.

Another fantastic restaurant with Lijiang cuisine to try is Dali Courtyard (大里院子), where there is no defined food menu for patrons, so you would sit down and they will continually serve dishes to your table. It is situated in a hutong, amidst the homes of Chinese families.

I did very little of the touristy thing, and gave the Summer Palace and Great Wall a miss. I did go to 798, the art district, and Temple of Heaven (天坛) though, and decided after going to these two places that I wanted to pass on the other tourist haunts for this trip. I loved 798, and enjoyed walking through the museums.

The sky and weather gods were pretty kind to me, would you believe there were  clear skies for two days in a row? It also wasn’t too hot, until the last day I was there.

An interesting thing happened at the airport. Although I had arrived an hour before my flight was due to take off, there was a bit of a mad rush to get me on the plane immediately because China was sending Shenzhou-9 into space, and all planes had to leave the tarmac by 5pm. This is a historical moment because China’s first female taikonaut was on that spaceship.

I felt really happy on this trip, where everyone was so nice. It was also a great breather from work! Cycling about the city was a special experience for me; there was something very liberating about it, although I was mildly afraid of getting knocked down by a car. Inside of me, there was a voice that said “What the hell? Just go for it!” and so I did.

I won’t be getting another break till at least September, I think, so I’m going to hold on tighter to these memories than ever!

It is not really my thing to judge someone else’s creations or how they look. This means that it’s my first Celebs post on this blog. So, let’s get it done nicely and softly. Before I begin, I must say that I’m not strict cause I believe that everyone has got their own, unique style and it’s their deal what they wear. So basically I’m just sharing my opinions about them

Charlize Theron

Doesn’t she look beautiful in that mini-dress? You can call it a mini-dress or maybe a two-piece costume, right? Her, creation is so simple but elegant in the same way. You’d think that she just wore the random dress that she could find in her wardrobe, but I am actually impressed how simple but beautiful you can look. Win for Charlize!

Ciara

If I had a chance I would come up to that girl and I’d say ‘Girl, isn’t your dress a little bit too short. I can nearly see your vagina!’. I know that she wants to look sexy and attractive but for Goddamn sake’s wear something which won’t expose your private places when you sit down. I like the shoes though. Imagine her with the much, much longer dress – in the same style but longer that drops on the floor. Also, if she likes big cuts in her clothes, the huge cut line would go from her waist down to the floor in that longer dress. Anyway, Fail for Ciara!

Emma Watson

I am totally in love with that girl. She always seems so innocent and cute that she makes me wanna come up to her and squeeze her cheeks Her body is perfect and that dress fits perfectly on her, however I think she could have done so much better. My first impression when I saw her was: OMG what have you done, gurl? but then I slowly tried to get used to that look. The shoes are precious and they would look amazing with the white mini-dress. I think the dress that she’s wearing there has too much on it. Even though she could have done so much better, I’m gonna go for a Win for Emma!

Holland Roden

Well, I don’t really know her and I’ve never seen her before in any movie. Or maybe I’ve seen her but I just can’t remember. She failed anyway. My question is: What is this? The pattern, color and length of the dress don’t go together at all. All I can say is congrats for being brave to come to the awards in this and I hope she’ll correct herself the next time. Fail for Holland!

Jessica Biel

Now, I always loved that woman and the creations that she wears. She looks divine in that dress. It perfectly shows her shapes and you can say that it beautifully fits on her. I know that it’s not too long either but we can do the exception for Jessica. It doesn’t matter what she wears as long as it fits, it’s good. Win for Jessica!

Josh Hutcherson

We’ve got one guy over here! Josh is amazing, he’s my fave actor lately. He played great in The Hunger Games. His choice to wear brown chinos to the Awards was very British. I don’t exactly know when the fashion for chinos started in Britain but it’s driving me crazy already. At the start of the trend, a lot of good-looking guys were wearing chinos. Now everyone is wearing them, never minding what they match the chinos with. Josh matched everything perfectly and I may even say that he kinda reminds me of ME! Except, without that hat maybe. Win for Josh!

ZZ Ward

Lastly, we have this. I don’t know what to say about this “creation”. I’m not sure which noun matches the best with this outfit: Flop, Failure or Shit? That make-up, shoes (look at dem shoes gurl) it is all so complicated that I’m out of words. Definitely giving ZZ a fail!

Well, all I can say is that we all have our Ups and Downs. From the few pictures above you can notice that color red rocked this year’s awards. I’m not a big fan of red cause I don’t find it as a matching-to-everything color like black or white.

Lt Karol Area 1 Commander opening up his 2nd meeting

Topics were well covered and residents were given and opportunity to comment and vent without being chased out of the room because they didn’t entirely agree with the presenter. Not every presenter spoke because the presenters that did speak were important to the people sitting in the audience.

I wasnt entirely sure how the chosen venue would suit this meeting when I first heard about it, but after the meeting was over the only critique is that it was hard to find out which room the meetin was in because Sunrise Church is such a large facility. Proper signage would help negate this issue. The people who attend there who were there for bible studies and other groups were very nice, hospitible and helped you find the right room.

Larry Decrona Owner & Managing partner in aquisition and Property Managment

First up was Larry from Superior Graffitti Removal – They are the new graffitti removal company and they are promising to do more for less. How many of you have ever paid less for for a service or product and been at all happy with the end result? My fear is that they will relize this city is more work than originally factored and come back to council looking for money &/or allow their service drop off due to the additional expense of serivcing our city. They promise next day service & a national reporting serivce that is free to the city. They say that if you call on graffitti and they cant remove it or refuse to because of some strange rules they will call you and inform you. Well I debunked that this week I called on three spots this week no removal and no call. They say they are the largest graffitti removal company in LA County, like that was a badge of honor. LA County has a reputation of throwing bad money after good and has graffitti blanketing their communities. Where is the graffitti removal response? You can find them at http://4superior.com .

Scott Enoch with City of Rialto Parks and Rec

Scott Enoch with Parks and Rec seemed a little unprepared for the types of questiones he recived. He spoke about the cataloge that the city puts out to inform the community about services they provice and annonced the dedication cerimony at Freguson park that will take place Saturday July 14th. Whats funny is the football feilds wont be stripped until just before the dedication and grand opening of the park because they want it to look nice, yet the park is already open. In my opinion it sends the message that the city dosent care about the comunity just the press and media that wont show up for the event. The only time media covers Rialto is for bad things very rare to hear about positive things in the Sun or ABC 7 in reference to Rialto.

The questions Mr Enoch wasnt ready for was about the violence, crime, debachury and filth that currently resides in our parks. People complained about the janitorial services that Mr Enoch had never met or seen in his life. People described to cleaning staff as 2 mexican ruffians pulling up in a lifted black truck and doing very little cleaning. Bathrooms cleanliness was also a issue sticky and trashed almost all the time, waste baskets with busted out bottoms, gangs taking over our parks and much more.

Sergio is with Public Works and is a Traffic Engineer

Public works was next and they had a traffic engineer out to speak to the public. 2 new traffic signals were installed 1 at Valley/Cactus and the other on Rverside Ave in front of Fire Station 202. Cactus south bound is sceduled to be widened, Ayala north bound will be widened, Linden north bound to Carter and a new signal will begin the planning phases at Linden and Riverside Aves. This intersection is the source of many accidents and fatilities in the past and is well over due. Also Pepper will be extended to the 210 freeway.

Mike Story is the City Manager addressing some issues within the city

Last was Mike Story the city manager for the city of Rialto. First off read his monthly report its full of great information. Mr Story spoke about some of the issues that were being brought up. In and Out in Rialto will happen at its latest is 2013, the city is getting leaner but its finding ways to to the same with less. Mr Story is a straight shooter with a positive outlook as long as we can remain together during the lean years. Super Walmart is finally moving along, Mr Story spoke about ways his department is making Rialto more business freindly without giving away the farm. San Bernardino has done just that with the new Amazon Wharehouse, Kohls Distribution center, Regal Cinema project in downtown and many more they earn so little on tax revenues and have nothing to pay for toads damaged by truck traffic or crime that follows these developments. Mr Story is using quick building permits, defered project payments and more to help developers.

Finally Lt Karol closed the meting with some recent crime trends in the area and city:

• Ding Dong Break In – Somone comes up to your door and knocks and rings the bell if none awnsers another person access your backyard smashes in your slider and ransacks your home in and out in about 2 mins. If your home awsner from inside you dont have to awnser the door but with them knowing somones home they normally move on.
• Front Door Kick In – Yes its back they caught 2 males who had been victimizing homes on the south end of area 1. Key here is to report people that dont belong in your neigborhood.
• Into the Garage – Do you leave a garage door opener in your car? If yes then you could be a waiting victim of this breakin.

For now, let’s turn our attention to my second Potential Double Feature post. While my first pair of films are not among my very favorites, these two are. What About Bob? and In & Out have been in my life for a very long time. Viewings (both passive and active) for each total in the hundreds. They are two of my all-time favorite comedies.

What About Bob? (1991)
IMDB Summary: A successful psychiatrist loses his mind after one of his most dependent patients, a highly manipulative obsessive-compulsive, tracks him down during his family vacation.

A comedy with some accessible dark streaks, What About Bob? features, to me, Bill Murray’s career-best comedic performance. He takes a break from his wise-ass routine to dole out a manipulative childlike dependent basket case who genuinely wants to belong. Bob Wiley never feels like a schtick; we immediately buy him as a character. Murray gives Bob such a genuinely endearing quality, we can’t help but love the relentlessly pestering fella. The same cannot quite be said for Richard Dreyfuss as Dr. Leo Marvin, who has some killer line deliveries in what starts out as an arrogant caricatured psychiatrist, and what ends with a bit too much one-note frenzy.

What makes this is the way Marvin’s family and the audience are sucked into Bob’s seemingly dysfunctional worldview. Towards the end, the way he sees and handles life gradually make sense to us. His 100% commitment to Leo’s dismissive “Take a Vacation from your Problems” advice seems like a healthy life choice because it works for Bob.  As Marvin unspools, Bob becomes more firmly and permanently placed in the hearts of the Marvin family. Bob may have his fair share of mental problems, but they stem from his debilitating fear of the world around him and not from an inadequacy found in Bob’s comfort with himself. The role-reversal that takes place is somewhat ingenious as Bob is cherished by the Marvin’s while Leo slips into a lapse of insanity.

In & Out (1997)
IMDB Summary: A midwestern teacher questions his sexuality after a former student makes a comment about him at the Academy Awards.

Paul Rudnick, playwright and screenwriter of such films as Addams Family Values and Jeffrey (based on his play), sweetly satirizes gay intolerance and lampoons celebrity in what is one of the more underrated comedies of any decade. Kline’s Howard Brackett desperately tries to hold onto his ordered life as he approaches his impossibly overdue marriage to Joan Cusack’s Emily (one of the fewer comedic performances to be nominated for an Oscar). When Cameron Drake (played perfectly by Matt Dillon) wins an Oscar for playing a gay soldier and thanks his gay teacher for inspiring him, he outs a man who isn’t out to anyone including himself. What follows is a lively jaunty form of identity chaos that pokes fun at small-town scandal and the absurdity of homosexual prejudice.It may seem safe, but for an industry still almost entirely unwilling to tell mainstream homosexual stories, a mainstream comedy (written by a gay man no less) taking on the subject 15 years ago remains impressive.

Watching Them Together:

The first obvious connection between these two films is that they were both directed by Frank Oz. If I had seen these films for the first time as an adult, I would probably have wished for the two to be edgier and to push themselves a bit more in tone and risk. As it stands, Oz presents them under a very accessible but zany tentpole.

Our protagonists are in a way, opposites. Bob Wiley may suffer from crippling anxiety, but at heart he seems at ease with himself as a personality. He suffers from no identity crisis, instead wanting to learn how to function with some normalcy in the real world. Howard Brackett is perfectly at ease with the small-town environment that surrounds him, but his repression as well as Drake’s comment results in an identity crisis that throws his entire universe completely out of whack. He uses denial so order can be maintained and to shield himself to the townspeople, who collectively have had their world shaken by what should be, in a reasonable and tolerant world, an important private epiphany and a public non-event.

In some ways, the last-ditch efforts to maintain order aligns Howard Brackett with Leo Marvin. Each has their world just so; Howard with his denial as a cushion for his safe and neutered future life with Emily and Leo with his dictatorial no-fun zone atmosphere he inflicts on his family. The difference is that Howard is our protagonist and Leo our antagonist. Cameron Drake upsets Howard’s order and Bob upsets Leo’s.

The two musical scores, by Miles Goodman and Marc Shaiman respectively, are very prominent and constant, each tracking the progression of manic outbursts and realizations. Towards the end, I will admit that each make a misstep of some sort. As What About Bob? turns its focus entirely to Dreyfuss in its final scenes, it loses something without Murray properly buoying it. The very end feels far too patched up for my taste, and I wish it had the audacity to follow through with a darker ending. In & Out has the type of climax that takes on the last-minute figurative rescue in front of a big crowd. The scene is moving and the circumstances make the situation more realistic than most of its kind, but it goes on for far too long and its execution is too saccharine. But as the end credits roll as the cast joyously dances to “YMCA”, all is forgiven.

Did I mention that each film has brilliant dialogue exchanges and top-notch comedic acting? Kevin Kline may not be dealing with the in-your-face pathos of Otto West, but I would argue his work here is on par with his Oscar-winning A Fish Called Wanda role. The Glenn Close cameo as well as the Oscar clip reel from Cameron Drake’s award-winning performance in To Serve and Protect has made me scream and cry with laughter more times than I could count. Tom Selleck is delightful in an unorthodox supporting role and Joan Cusack and Matt Dillon, as I said before, are tops. In What About Bob? there are certain scenes that remain classics including Bob and Leo’s Good Morning America appearance, Leo and daughter Anna speaking with their representative puppets, Bob and son Sigmund goofing off at night, etc. And so many exchanges between Bob and Leo that are pitch-perfect in line delivery, not least including:

Dr. Leo Marvin: Are you married?
Bob Wiley: I’m divorced.
Dr. Leo Marvin: Would you like to talk about that?
Bob Wiley: There are two types of people in this world: Those who like Neil Diamond, and those who don’t. My ex-wife loves him.
Dr. Leo Marvin: [pause] I see. So, what you’re saying is that even though you are an almost-paralyzed, multiphobic personality who is in a constant state of panic, your wife did not leave you, you left her because she… liked Neil Diamond?

This double feature choice takes on a more personal tack. I’m pretty picky when it comes to comedies. Most of the films that have been in my life since adolescence are comedies and they are the films I am familiar with more than any others. This is because these are the types of films I had seen enough times to comfortable put on in the background on a daily basis in my teens. Nowadays, I drift towards darker fare, and comedies that stick still come along, but not very often. Films like these two, Bringing Up Baby, Clue, Dumb and Dumber, Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World, and many others ultimately hold a singular place within my vast love for the medium.

Its so funny when I brought this item to council attention they said it was stalled because the State may still have an intrest in the site now its because they are giving away 2 million dollers?

Somone needs to make up thier minds and tell us really why its so stalled? All of these council members needs to be removed so we can make some real progress here.

• Simple transperity isn’t enough when it comes to our water and a 30 year contract – Besides people who either work for the city, sit on a city commission/board or belong to a group or organization that is owned by the city government no one things that the information meetings were informative, they were more confusing. No other proposals were shown, staff presenting the information came off cocky and rude & people were left with more questions than answers.
• When the people (Rialto Residents) speak listen – 80+ people signed up to speak on the impending vote on water services & the city council choose to instead listen to Union reps, possible future business owners, labor lobbies & inappropriate city mouth pieces (Ref June Hayes calling one of the speakers a card carving communist). When Rialto business owners and residents filled 4 rooms and spoke their piece and you still chose to ignore it, you work for us remember that.
• For years this city government has made a choice to ignore the water system, now when RDA funds are gone we make a made dash for the first person willing to pay us off. How is this fair to the city? Why should the residents pay for your lack of leadership. It was best said today as Governor Brown was making his latest pitch for higher taxes he ask a reporter if she didn’t like his plan what did she think he should do and she said “THATS YOUR JOB”. IF the city water is in such disrepair then let’s get to work fixing it. Start off by using the 30 million dollars the Utility owes you and let’s get to work. Then lets talk about slow graduated increases that will hurt less over time to obtain the remainder of the money and finish the work. By the councils own admission this alone will bring business here that was avoiding us because of our water systems age and disrepair. I don’t agree that is why they are avoiding us but that’s for another post.
• SOS is comprised from people out-of-state that have seen American Water at work and know first hand what type of service they provide. This doesnt bother me one bit because without the hard work and passion of the people of Rialto their efforts would have died out eons ago.

Dear friends and neighbors:

On Saturday, May 12, we filed our petition with the City Clerk with substantially more than enough signatures to place the water privatization scheme before the voters of Rialto.  Under California law, this means that the City will be required to present this critical issue to a vote of the people.

We needed 10% of the registered voters of Rialto to qualify for the ballot – or just over 3,600 signatures.  Instead, we turned in more than 6,400 signatures!

The people of Rialto really came through to let City Council know that the voters of Rialto deserve to have the final say on this misguided 30-year privatization scheme.

The next step is that the City will review our petition to verify that we have submitted a sufficient number of valid signatures.  After that, this issue should be presented to a public ballot sometime over the next few months.  We will need to re-double our efforts to make certain this water privatization contract is defeated at the ballot box.

In addition, in the next few days we will be sending Prop 218 protest cards to all Rialto property owner who are affected by the huge rate hikes that the City Council is trying to push through to finance this deal.  If a majority of property owners protest these rate hikes, then the City cannot impose the rate increases and the entire water privatization scheme fails.

We will keep you posted on both of these efforts as we move forward.

We the People have spoken. The final count is into the Rialto City Clerks Office.The Referendum Petition that we fought so hard for, 3 weeks of door to door asking all Rialto Voters to please sign and you did. We were hoping for min of 3500 and topping out 5000 for padding and our numbers are 6418, You did it. We the People of Rialto have spoken. Leaning forward, the model tries to still the beads yet ultimately is also tantalising them, egging them on to fall like water into straight cascades, putting an end to the swinging and swaying. The sound is like a light rain early in the morning, gently falling and bouncing off the roof. The beads tangle and combine, despite the wearers effort to untangle them, and she settles into a pose instead of pursuing the matter further. The moment of stillness is not filled with silence, as sudden movements gave way to the fringe swaying and once again colliding with itself, the tinkling of rain collecting in strength. The upper half has so far remained relatively silent, taunting the audience more with the light it reflects and throws back into the eyes of the viewer than with any noise it could make. The over boisterous bottom half has made the upper portion seem calm in comparison.
Breathing heavily, a finger is run upon the upper bodice, eliciting screams of protest as the sequins are plucked in the opposite way they are adhered. The loud pops and cracks are as satisfying as popping bubble wrap, each pluck loud and pronounced. From shoulder to waist, a short diagonal is run by each hand on the opposite side of the body, the upper portion having its moment in the spotlight, as the beads below are in quiet awe.

The model has an idea, for fun and frivolity. Shaking her hips from side to side, and randomly bending her knees, she allows the top to move freely from side to side, bead smacking on bead and sequin alike. The mostly open back is revealed to a frontal viewer as the audience sees the sides swing in and out of view, slapping and rebounding into the rib cage of the wearer, urging the bead fringe to do the same. The sound is so alike the crinkling of cellophane, when a young child is too inpatient to use any constraint on a christmas or birthday morning, tearing into the wrapped presents with both hands. The model pauses just a moment, allowing the crinkling and crushing noises to slow and calm, becoming again more like a light rain. She begins the same action again, this time adding side steps and hand motions. The bodice moves more freely, lifting up and away from the body, it’s moment of freedom brief before its weight crashes back into the moving torso of the wearer. The rain noise becomes more like a fierce hail storm, the clinking and crashing of the beads becoming louder and more violent. The motions of the model allow such a joy to exude from both the wearer and the garment.

The model stops her hips, slowing stretching her arms in a feline gesture, teasing the beads by pulling them further back from their friends before releasing them into each other one final time. One shoulder of the bodice falls down in a last chime, and it leads to the ultimate decision of the wearer to rid herself of both light and sound before walking out of the scene.

and have you ever wanted to be like Carrie?

I bet loads. She is an amazing character in the show. I don’t know how you feel about Carrie (forgetting Sarah Jessica Parker as an actress) but I was and totally am in love with her. Just think: she’s a New York Star 

columnist, she lives in NYC, she’s an amazing friend, she’s got a great fashion sensibility and what’s the most important she loves life and uses it as much as she can. I remember a year ago when I was in a SATC obsession. All I had in my mind was to move to NYC, live in a small apartment and be a columnist haha. I mean it was always my dream to live in New York and I am probably gonna live there in a few years. Does anyone reading this post live in NYC? If yes, then please confirm that it is the most wonderful city in the world.

The thing that reminded me about Sex and the City was me watching it several days ago and you know that feeling when you don’t watch the particular show, the good times come to your mind. I am fully aware that vast majority of people think that Sex and the City is retarded but they’re entirely wrong. I think that at some moment in my life it helped me to go down the street with full confidence ignoring all the hatred and even till now I’m doing this cause all the fucking people letting you go down are just brainless, right?

Anyways, going off the topic a little bit here haha. Let’s come back to Carrie.  I mean gurl look at what she wears:

Her style is just perfect, don’t you think? If lots of women look the same as her in NY then this city is like heaven of fashion. I really like the idea of setting Carrie as a perfect woman, with the sense of fashion and as the best friend that everybody would want to have.

I don’t know why I thought of doing a post like this… Maybe just because I always loved Sex and the City and needed to share my thoughts about it
