Om het Palestijns-Israëlische conflict mooi op film te zetten is het misschien ook wel nodig om de kijker zo mee te slepen in de ellende. Emotionele gebeurtenissen, dramatische scenes en schokkerige beelden horen er in dat geval helemaal bij.

Inch’Allah laat het Palestijns-Israëlische conflict zien door de ogen van een jonge Canadese verloskundige, Chloé, die in haar eentje in Jeruzalem woont. Als zij naar haar werk in het Palestijnse vluchtelingenkamp op de Westelijke Jordaanoever reist, moet zij iedere dag twee keer langs een checkpunt. Het leven op de Westelijke Jordaanoever in onprettige omstandigheden, in slechte woningen, mensen rondscharrelend op de vuilnisbelt, vormt een triest beeld van de dagelijkse realiteit van de Palestijnen. Daarbij is er dan nog het isolement door de enorme muur, die Israël gebouwd heeft.

Chloé krijgt een steeds nauwere band met een jonge Palestijnse vrouw die in verwachting is en wordt hierdoor steeds meer het conflict in gesleurd. Gedurende de film heeft Chloé continue dezelfde sombere gezichtsuitdrukking, waar je op een gegeven moment wel genoeg van krijgt, maar ook zij heeft te maken met dit conflict. Af een toe een lachje op haar gezicht en iets meer humor in de film had desondanks geen kwaad gedaan.

De film geeft een goed beeld van het Palestijns-Israëlische conflict in Jeruzalem dat vandaag de dag gaande is. Het toont de gespannen sfeer waarin zowel de Joden als de Palestijnen leven, hoewel Inch’Allah vooral de Palestijnen laat zien. Deze film is zeker een meeslepend drama, waarin de sfeer van hoe de mensen in dit conflict leven knap wordt weer gegeven, met wellicht een erg dramatische climax, maar in dit geval kan drama de situatie beter weergeven dan de realiteit.

Le film commence par une scène de rue en Israël interrompue par un attentat.
Nous voyons ensuite Chloé, jeune sage-femme canadienne qui habite en Israël et travaille en Cisjordanie dans le dispensaire d’un camp de réfugiés palestiniens où elle suit des femmes enceintes. L’ambiance est tendue : l’armée israélienne effectue des perquisitions jusque dans le dispensaire suite à un attentat, tandis que des activistes palestiniens attaquent une colonie israélienne voisine, ne faisant que des blessés.
Chloé essaie de rapprocher sa voisine Ava et une de ses patientes, Rand. La première fait son service militaire et boit pour oublier son dégoût d’effectuer des contrôles à un checkpoint. La seconde, dont le mari est en prison en Israël, ramasse des objets dans une décharge près du mur de séparation, vit avec sa mère, son petit frère autiste, Safi, et son grand frère, Faysal, qui travaille dans une imprimerie fabriquant des affiches de chahids (kamikazes ou victimes de l’armée israélienne).
Plusieurs drames vont faire basculer Chloé du côté palestinien. Un petit voisin est écrasé par un char de combat tout près d’elle, et Chloé défile lors de ses obsèques et colle des affiches au nom du garçon avec Faysal. À cause d’un contrôle de grande ampleur de l’armée israélienne, qui bloque la circulation à Ramallah, et malgré les supplications de Faysal et Chloé, Rand accouche dans la voiture qui l’emmenait à l’hôpital et son fils ne survit pas. Enfin, le mari de Rand est condamné à 25 ans de prison.
Auparavant, Chloé avait obtenu une autorisation pour que Rand et sa famille puissent se rendre en Israël à l’emplacement de leur ancienne maison, aujourd’hui ruinée, ce qui ne provoque qu’amertume chez Faysal. Après la mort de son fils et la condamnation de son mari, Rand accuse Chloé d’être des deux côtés à la fois, d’être responsable de la mort de son fils pour être arrivée en retard au dispensaire (après une soirée à Tel Aviv) et l’insulte. Dépitée, Chloé rentre en Israël, transportant un objet qui est récupéré par un passager de l’autobus, et la première scène avec l’attentat se répète.
Quand elle revient dans l’imprimerie où elle retrouve Faysal, une nouvelle troublante l’attend…

Well Friday I said the honours just keep coming on the global stage for Quebec films. And guess what? You can say that again.

Montreal writer-director Denis Côté’s Vic + Flo ont vu un ours (Vic and Flo Saw a Bear) has won the Alfred Bauer Prize for Innovation in the official competition at the Berlin Film Festival, it was announced Saturday. This award is named in honour of the Berlin festival founder and it is given to a feature film “that opens new perspectives”.

Well if anyone opens new perspectives it’s M. Côté, one of Quebec’s most innovative filmmakers and just maybe the guy whose films have played more festivals around the world than anyone else in la belle province.

The win comes a day after Montreal filmmaker Anais Barbeau-Lavalette’s Inch’Allah won the FIPRESCI Prize in the Panorama section of the Berlin Film Festival. That win was why I was talking Friday about Quebec films storming the world stage.

In Vic + Flo ont vu un ours, Romane Bohringer and Pierrette Robitaille play lesbian lovers and former convicts – named Vic and Flo! – who settle in a country home after they get out of the slammer. Marc-André Grondin plays Vic’s parle officer. Bouillant de culture listeners know I love to give away film’s endings so I’m super happy to tell you I hear there is quite the bloody violent finale here.

The international honours just keep coming for Quebec films. The Canada-France co-production Inch’Allah has won the FIPRESCI prize in the Panorama section of the Berlin Film Festival, it was announced Friday. The prize is awarded by a jury of international film critics.

The award comes just a day after the film’s writer-director Anais Barbeau-Lavalette was named Artist for Peace for 2012, a prize doled out by the organization Les Artistes pour la paix.

Inch’Allah stars Evelyne Brochu as a Quebecois obstetrician working in a Palestinian refugee camp on the West Bank and living in Israel. It had its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival last fall and is nominated for best film at both the Jutra Awards and at the newly-created Canadian Screen Awards. The film is set to be released next month in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Holland.

The Berlin Film Festival wraps on Sunday with its award ceremony and another Quebec film, Denis Cote’s Vic et Flo on vu un ours is in the official competition at Berlin.

Writer-director Xavier Dolan’s Laurence Anyways is the leading contender for this year’s Jutra Awards, the Quebec film awards, with ten nods. The ambitious period piece about a man who is going through a sex change nabbed nominations for actress (Suzanne Clement), two for best supporting actress (Monia Chokri and Nathalie Baye), screenplay and direction (both young M. Dolan) and film.

The nominations for the 2013 Jutra Awards were unveiled at a press conference in Old Montreal on Thursday morning. The awards show itself takes place Sunday, March 17 at Salle Pierre-Mercure in the Centre Pierre-Peladeau and will be broadcast live on Radio-Canada Television.

Our Oscar hopeful Rebelle is, naturally enough, right up there as well in the Jutra race, with nine nominations. The poetic film about child soldiers in a fictional country very much like the Congo is up for best actress (Congolese teen Rachel Mwanza), supporting actor (Serge Kanyinda), screenplay and direction (both Kim Nguyen) and best film.

The third most nominated film is L’Affaire Dumont, which received eight nods, including for actress (Marilyn Castonguay), actor (Marc-Andre Grondin), and direction (Podz aka Daniel Grou). L’Affaire Dumont, inspired by a true story of a Montreal man wrongly convicted of sexual assault, is notable for its absence from the best-film short list.

Rafael Ouellet’s Camion – about what happens to an aging trucker after he’s involved in an accident – received seven nominations, notably for actor (Julien Poulin), screenplay and direction (both Ouellet) and film. Anais Barbeau-Lavalette’s Middle-East-set Inch’Allah received six, including for best film. Simon Lavoie’s little-seen period drama Le Torrent, adapted from the classic Anne Hebert story, also garnered six nominations. It is in the running for best actor (Victor Andres Trelles Turgeon) and actress (Dominique Quesnel).

The brand-new awards ceremony is the result of the fusion of the Genie and Gemini Awards, bringing together the Canadian film and TV awards together in one big splashy show that will be on CBC-TV Sunday March 3, with Martin Short hosting.

Rebelle is up for best film, director (Kim Nguyen), lead actress (Rachel Mwanza), and screenplay (Nguyen).

Xavier Dolan’s Laurence Anyways is the second most nominated film with 10 nominations, including for best film, director (Dolan), actor (French thespian Melvil Poupaud), actress (Suzanne Clement), and screenplay (Dolan).

Coming in third in the film sweepstakes is Deepa Mehta’s Midnight’s Children, with eight nominations. L’Affaire Dumont nabbed seven, Still Mine seven, Goon six and Inch’Allah five.

The most nominated TV show is the cop drama Flashpoint, with 11, followed by comedy Less Than Kind with 10.

That said, the latest round of unrest in the region has made international headlines, and I’m not about to ignore it altogether.  But instead of attending some sorta rally for one group or the other, I engage in résistance festive by going to the movies.  Inch’Allah was one of the flicks I wanted to see at TIFF 2012, but I couldn’t get a ticket before all three screenings sold out.  And yet, a week after it officially opens, it’s only showing twice a day in one of the small third-floor theatres at the TIFF Bell Lightbox.  I guess most of the folks who wanted to see it were already at the festival?

Not only had I never been up to the third floor of the Lightbox before (it’s smaller and less fancy than the second-floor theatres, but hey, there’s still lotsa legroom!), I had also never eaten at the Canteen restaurant downstairs.  Run by Oliver & Bonacini, it’s received some less-than-rave reviews, but I figured I still had to try it at least once.  The menu consists of fairly familiar foods at less-than-generous prices ($14 eggs benny, $16 grilled cheese), but I figured if I was going to pay a little more for lunch, I’d at least try something I couldn’t get for less money at the Ultimate Cafe across the street.  So I ordered the Semolina Gnocchi, with braised lamb, rosemary and Parmesan.  Dunno what happened to the cheese, though…

Anyways, the gnocchi was lightly crisp on the outside, soft and doughy on the inside, the lamb was nice and tender, and the cute little serving dish was so hot that I burned my finger on it (a heads-up would’ve been nice).  Adding insult to injury, when I went to run my reddish digit under cold water in the washroom, the fancy automatic sink only ran hot.  Not cool, man!  Anyways, I can say that it was a decent-sized portion for lunch, but I don’t think you get any more at dinnertime.

As for the movie, well, if you want a whimsical, beyond-borders love story, don’t go see this one.  War Is Hell, as they say, and the ongoing standoff between Israel and Palestine is no exception.  Some people say that the latest round of fighting was spawned by the upcoming Israeli election, but you almost hafta wonder if the producers of Inch’Allah made a deal with Netanyahu to help them get an Oscar nod…  I kid, of course, but this film couldn’t be any more timely, hitting theatres just a couple days after the latest ceasefire.  A co-production between Canada and France, it’s worth noting that the latter voted for Palestinian observer status at the UN a couple days ago, while the former voted against.  In any case, this movie doesn’t really take a side in the conflict, showing life on both sides of the border (though the Palestinian part was apparently shot in Jordan).

The story unfolds through the eyes of Chloé (Évelyne Brochu), a young French-Canadian doctor who lives in Israel, but works at a UN maternal health clinic in Palestine.  There, she befriends a French-speaking Isareli border-guard who lives in her building while building a relationship with a pregnant Palestinian patient.  From an outsider’s perspective, Chloé is taken aback by the great divide between the two peoples; even early in the film, when she asks her friend to say something on camera-phone to the Palestinian people, the soldier can’t think of anything beyond “Bonjour Palestine…” then, after a long pause, “Enchantée.”

Brochu has only had a few years of film experience, but is no stranger to dramatic roles, having tackled the Montreal Massacre in the 2009 Denis Villeneuve film Polytechnique.  Her emotions are on full display here, mostly the grief and stress from being stuck in this situation.  She tries to intervene on several occasions, but in the end, her actions only make things worse.  As her doctoral colleague Michael tries to tell her (and I’m paraphrasing a translation here), you’ve just got to keep cool and not get involved.  I suppose that message could apply to the outside world as a whole when it comes to this conflict…

Alas, while two of the last three films produced by the duo of Luc Déry and Kim McCraw were nominated for foreign-language Oscars (namely Monsieur Lazhar and Incendies), I wouldn’t say this one’s quite on the same level.  Controversial subject matter aside, the movie may be equally dark as some of their past work, but Inch’Allah lacks the explosive action and stunning cinematography of Incendies, whereas its personal angle isn’t quite as strong as Monsieur Lazhar‘s.  (Unlike Denis Villeneuve or Philippe Falardeau, Inch’Allah director Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette isn’t exactly a household name.)  A stark look at Israel and Palestine, to be sure, but I wouldn’t say it really offered any new insight into the conflict for those who’ve been following the news.  Perhaps these outsiders could’ve just left this topic alone, eh?

A movie like this, set in the tense and fractious hinterland between Israel and the Palestinian territories, becomes intermittently timely – such as this week, which saw heavy bombardment from both sides, before news of a fragile ceasefire.

Stepping into this almost literal minefield is Chloé, a Quebec doctor who lives in Israel but works at a UN-run women’s health centre in the West Bank. Her best friend and drinking buddy on the Israeli side is Ava (Sivan Levy), who works at one of the checkpoints. But Chloé is also close to Rand (Sabrina Ouazani), a pregnant patient whose husband is in jail, and who supports herself by scouring the dump for reusable items.

Chloé has to navigate the daily border crossing to get to work, and is occasionally stranded on the Palestinian side when violence flares and things go into lockdown. At the clinic, soldiers barge in on patrol, and the line between security and intimidation seems transparently thin.

Evelyne Brochu plays Chloé with a stoicism that at times borders on the catatonic. She’s clearly been there so long that she’s stopped feeling surprise at the violence, and is in danger of feeling nothing at all. The most emotion she shows is during a video chat with her mother in what looks to be suburban Montreal, when a single tear runs down her cheek.

Chloé’s status as an outsider gives her certain freedoms, but belonging is not one of them. Every time she starts to identify with one group, she is roughly rebuffed. When she refers to “you Israelis” while talking to Ava about how the media covers attacks and reprisals, the other woman storms out.

I wanted to like Inch’Allah, which was written and directed by Quebec filmmaker Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette, and produced by the same people who brought Oscar nominees Incendies and Monsieur Lazhar to the screen. But something in the script felt a touch manipulative. It may have been the presence of a Palestinian kid who wears a Superman costume everywhere he goes, although that would have been insufferable in a lesser movie than this one.

Maybe it’s just that we never get a real sense of who Chloé is, why she chose to work in the occupied territories, and why she sticks around when circumstances (and people) are so clearly telling her she’s not wanted. Brochu has a watchful, watchable face, but a little more backstory might help her connect with viewers more fully.

That said, Inch’Allah (Arabic for “God willing”) remains a moving portrayal of a community split along ethnic, political and religious lines. There’s a grim irony that it’s seen through the eyes of someone from a country with its own schisms, ones that the depth and seriousness of those in the Middle East throws into sharp perspective.
