A six-month-old boy has been flown to Wellington Hospital after suffering an allergic reaction to his milk formula.

The Wellington-based Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called to the boy’s home in Wainuiomata just after 10am.

The fire service established a landing area for the helicopter and the child was transported to hospital with his mother.

Three people have been treated after inhaling a poisonous gas in Lower Hutt.

The XL Corporation building in Hutt Park Rd had been cordoned off after a chemical spill.

Three fire engines attended the incident, along with ambulance staff who treated the people at the scene.

Fire Brigade staff contained the spill and area is now open to traffic.

For a change, I have a post with no photographs - because I couldn’t get any.

I usually go on a  photography trip over the weekend. While trips outside Hyderabad are with friends, if I go somewhere within Hyderbad I prefer going by myself – mainly because photography is a sort of “I need to be involved in it” activity, which doesn’t always go down well with other people in the group, plus it’s easier to think of photographs when I’m on my own.

Today I had planned on going to this place called “Badshahi Ashoorkhana”, a 16th century building located in Afzalganj. I booked a cab to be there at my place at 3:00 in the afternoon, so that I could be there by 4:00 pm – giving me enough time in the sun for my shots.

As luck would have it, the cab reached my place only at 3:45 pm – apparently the driver was held up due to some election rally (Hyderabad has GHMC elections tomorrow). Anyway, all was not lost yet, I thought even if I reached by 4:30pm, it should be ok. It’s just a single building anyway, how many shots could I get? But life isn’t that easy. The driver had not heard of Ashoorkhana. He called up 1 million other people and they hadn’t heard of Ashoorkhana either. It was 4:00 pm, sunlight would soon start fading, and I knew that Ashoorkhana was a lost cause. I then asked my driver to take me to “Lotus Pond”. It’s a garden sort of place I’d heard of. But of course, the driver didn’t know where that was either. Are you kidding me?? What the hell was he doing driving a cab if he doesn’t know half the places in Hyderabad!!! The second round of phone calls ensued, to find out the location of Lotus “Pind” as he called it. After what seemed like ages, he finally go it and we started driving towards “Lotus Pind” at 4:15 pm.

Have you ever experienced that feeling, when you’re in a car, and you need to catch a flight or a train, and every single moment is so precious, and the stupid car seems to be moving so damn slowly, that you just wish that you could get down and push the car yousrself to make it move faster? Or maybe push the driver out and drive there yourself (I didn’t think that, I don’t trust my driving skills so much yet), but you get the point. I needed to get to Lotus Pond, well in time while the sunlight lasted, and here was this guy driving at 30 kmph. Grinding my teeth was all I could do to refrain from really really really shouting at him.

We finally reached Lotus Pond (after a number of wrong turns in between) – only to find it was literally a pond (more like a marsh), not very big either, with a path running all around it. Yep, obviously I’m not supposed to be taking any photographs today. Anyway, I tried to make the best of what was available. A good photographer can make anything look like a photograph after all….or so I’d heard.

Barely 15 mins might have passed when a bunch of wannabe guys on a bike, stopped outside the garden wall and whistled. I’m no “brave woman of the modern world”, I ignored the guys and made my way towards the gate where the car stood. This incident was enough to make me call it a day, and go back home.

As we drove back, I wondered how hard it is for a girl to pursue hobbies that require travelling – many times alone. And it’s so unfair that just because it’s not safe, she can’t do what she likes. I’ve always known that our societal setup is not very “lone girl friendly”, but it has never really been a hindrance so far. Yeah we had hostel timings in college (and guys didn’t), and ya I can’t stay out alone till late, but today I really felt how much freedom can mean, and how, even though nothing happened, I’ll always think twice before doing something like this again.

I recently finished a book titled “The Idea of Justice” by Amartya Sen. I won’t get into the details of the book, but it’s unjust if some members of the society (men or women), may have the opportunity, but not the capability to do what they reasonably can. My taking photographs should be purely a function of what I can do with my camera, and not of whether I’m a girl, and whether I can go out safely alone. But apparently it is.

I have no adequate ending to this post. I’m now back at home, pissed off at the stupid driver who didn’t know his way around, and at the guys who had strange ideas about macho-ness. I did get some photographs of Lotus Pond which I’ll post eventually. But India, and I guess the world in general,  has a long way to go before we all can truly believe that we can pursue our dreams wholeheartedly. And that those dreams getting fulfilled is purely a function of our own abilities and hard work, and not of the system and society we live in.

or: fun fact, gays can smell terrorists…but sadly they can’t tell us

Right now in Washington D.C., there are investigations in to the recruiting policies and monitoring of enlisted soldiers as to their religious affiliation in congruence with the mental stability of our soldiers. These hearings and investigative panels, of which there was one Thursday led by I-Joe Lieberman, are the direct result of the alleged actions at Fort Hood on Nov. 5, 2009, by Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan. Investigations are going to delve deep, eventually, and massive overhauls of privacy rights for soldiers and further screening in recruiting as well as monitoring while in the armed forces will come, doubt on this can be none. These findings of the panels will be arbitrary at best on an isolated incident that has been categorized as ‘terrorism’ before the blood even dried in Texas. What will come out of this fear is policies put in place to allow for the government to monitor and spy on it’s servicemen and women…but what if they find something they don’t want to? How does this new ideology that will come from the aftermath of this tragedy affect the long standing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy put in place under Bill Clinton? Reconciling our fear of attack and the consequences of full disclosure run contradictory leaving us in nothing less than a moral and legal stalemate.

I foresee that within six months from now panels will find that monitoring the personal e-mails, contacts, phone records, and personal interactions of its soldiers as necessary to the further security of this nation. It will be stipulated that extensive background checks will be called for, and recruiting standards are going to come under close scrutiny as to allow for enough soldiers, but not let in too many ‘questionable’ individuals. What will occur is that each soldier will have to agree to give up their civil liberties, which to some extent they already do, but they will now be under full discretion of the Patriot Act and every facet of their lives will be a matter of military record and available for review at all times. Psychological exams and test as well as regular counseling and drug testing will be mandatory. Before enlisting every soldier will be subject to military, and the finding of the hearings will also dictate an outside department, the FBI, to fully screen every single candidate. Becoming a solider will now become a moment of being all that you can be, and then letting the government see exactly what that is, intimately.

Will this be the right path? Time will tell, as will public outcry or protest from soldiers, but it will happen. The nation is terrified at the possibility of the very idea that some ‘terrorist’ could possibly infiltrate US military defenses, weapons stockpiles, et al, and as with 9/11 we will allow for the government to take any measure to assure our safety. No doubt that incidents against Muslim servicemen and women will go up, we probably won’t hear about it though. As a minority, especially of middle eastern decent, they will be profiled and most likely scrutinized further than anyone else; they will be unfairly profiled, this is America and that is our knee-jerk reaction. Sorry. What will follow will be a Muslim witch hunt that will both embarrass and weaken the strength of our branches of the military. The shifting eyes from soldier to soldier started on that day, don’t pretend they didn’t, and now we are weary of one another which leads to fear which leads to incidents. Indeed.

Well, how does this effect those in the military who are under a prime directive put forth by the Commander in Chief, the President of the United States? What happens to those men and women serving, or wanting to serve, in the military who have something to hide because it is the law? For those in the military who must keep their sexual orientation and relationships secret, don’t you think that with enough snooping for terrorists we might uncover a few gays? “Sir, Private Jones is not a terrorist, he’s a queen, sir.” What then? It kind of defeats the purpose of a law that stipulates that a serviceman will not initiate a conversation on the nature of a soldiers orientation, but what if an investigation does the leg work for him? Then we have a primary issue, once it is known the soldier must be discharged, right? That’s the law. Wait, but we weren’t looking for gays, we were looking for terrorists. Look the other way then, but wait, that soldier is a gay…back to the shifty eyes.

What these investigations present us with a need to take a good, long look in the mirror as a nation and decide where we draw the line. The end result of this incident, the longest standing victim besides those killed, injured, and effected, will be the policies of full disclosure and something I think will be called the ‘Servicemen Activities/Identity Transparency’ act, or “say-it” (SA/IT, get it?), the antithesis of the DADT policy of today. This will, of course, require that we have full disclosure from all troops on all subjects, but this might be hard without first ending the DADT policy of the last nearly 17 years. Installing this policy shift without repealing DADT will be one slippery slope indeed, you cannot have two orders that are so utterly contradictory; they are both compromised by the presence of the other. We, as a country cannot have a full investigatory policy of all servicemen and women without first coming to terms with what we may find and how to deal with it. Has anyone even given a thought as to how we would arrest, imprison, court martial, sentence, or just discharge, a serviceman or woman…if they were either gay or a terrorist? How the hell would either of those proceedings go? We need to, before putting in new policies, decide about the end game and what the consequences might be if we got our wish and started outing people.

It is clear that there is a fundamentally philosophical issue at hand, “How much do we want to know to feel safe?” We are shining the light of scrutiny in to the closets of our citizens, and some of those closets may be quite flamboyant; that is not a military issue boa. What will happen to our puritanical beliefs and ‘ignorance is bliss’ mentality when we find answers to questions we weren’t asking? We want safety, but we don’t want [to know about] queers; what the fuck do scared, bigoted lawmakers do!? Well, I think in the interest of national security after this singular isolated incident of ‘terrorism’ by and ‘islamic extremist’ that is not the fault of policy or of any specific layer of governance, that we need to DO something; or at least appear to do something. We will rape the civil rights of soldiers and sodomize personal privacy for the good of the nation. However, this cannot go on while DADT is in place. I think I speak for everyone that, in this matter of relative safety, we can’t have two standing orders that contradict themselves; “Say It” and “DADT” cannot both be followed, and in the interest of the people’s feelings of safety, we might want to get over ourselves and be open about…everything, so as to further secure this country. I can’t speak from experience, but I would rather the man in a foxhole next to me be a confirmed ‘gay’ than a suspected ‘terrorist’, but that’s just me.

Purtatorul de cuvant al Politiei Capitalei, Christian Ciocan, afirma la momentul incidentului, ca politistii bucuresteni s-au autosesizat in cazul Mihaelei Radulescu , aceasta fiind cercetata pentru furt calificat dupa ce a luat un rucsac si alte bunuri din masina cotidianului “Libertatea”. De asemenea, cei doi angajati ai cotidianului “Libertatea” sunt cercetati de politisti pentru loviri si alte violente, dupa ce Mihaela Radulescu a declarat ca cei doi au lovit-o cu masina.

In 13 martie, in jurul orei 21.50, Politia a fost anuntata ca Mihaela Radulescu a fost implicata intr-un conflict cu angajati ai cotidianului “Libertatea” , in parcarea Rin Grand Hotel. Mihaela Radulescu a acuzat un fotoreporter ca i-a facut fotografii si i-a incalcat dreptul la imagine, iar pe sofer ca a urmarit-o cu masina prin parcarea hotelului, a precizat Ciocan.

In timpul scandalului, pentru ca fotoreporterul a continuat sa ii faca fotografii, Mihaela Radulescu ar fi luat din masina ziarului “Libertatea” un rucsac in care erau aparatul de fotografiat si alte bunuri. Totodata, soferului i-ar fi luat cheile masinii, o legitimatie si cartela de acces in parcarea hotelului.

Dupa venirea politiei, Mihaela Radulescu le-a inapoiat obiectele si documentele luate din masina.

Procurorii arata in rezolutia data in 9 noiembrie in cazul vedetei ,ca aceasta nu a luat rucsacul si cheia autoturismului ziarului “Libertatea” pentru a si le insusi pe nedrept, ci pentru a afla identitatea fotoreporterului si pentru a ii opri pe urmaritori.

Potrivit documentului citat, dat joi publicitatii de Parchetul Judecatoriei Sectorului 4, in 9 noiembrie, procurorii bucuresteni au decis neinceperea urmaririi penale (NUP) fata de vedeta Mihaela Radulescu Schwartzenberg , pentru infractiunea de lovire sau alte violente, furt calificat, tilharie si distrugere, fata de Alexandru Sagaidac, sofer al ziarului Libertatea, pentru lovire sau alte violente si fata de fotoreporterul aceleiasi publicatii, Dumitru Angelescu, pentru infractiunea de vatamare corporala grava.

Fata de acuzatiile aduse de Mihaela Schwartzenberg celor doi angajati ai cotidianului amintit, procurorii arata ca fotografierea sa, chiar daca si-a exprimat dorinta de a nu fi fotografiata, nu constituie o fapta care intra in sfera de protectie a legii penale.

In alta ordine de idei, se arata in rezolutia procurorilor, fotografierea acesteia, datorita imprejurarilor in care s-a produs, din punctul de vedere al locului executarii fotografiilor, fiind o parcare, viteza de rulare a autoturismului, care era una redusa, nu a fost de natura a-i pune in pericol viata, nefiind astfel indeplinita urmarea socialmente periculoasa ceruta pentru existenta infractiunii de vatamare corporala grava.

“Mai mult, sustinerea Mihaela Schwartzenberg ca soferul Alexandru Sagaidac ar fi urmarit sa o loveasca, folosindu-se de autoturism, nu se coroboreaza cu niciun mijloc de proba”, mai noteaza anchetatorii in documentul citat.

Referitor la acuzatiile aduse Mihaelei Radulescu de soferul ziarului Libertatea, procurorii arata ca “nu se poate retine in sarcina acesteia savarsirea infractiunilor de lovire sau alte violente si respectiv de distrugere, pentru ca, pe de o parte, afirmatia soferului potrivit careia zgarietura de la degetul mare al mainii drepte ar fi fost produsa de catre Mihaela Schwartzenberg, in momentul in care aceasta i-a scos cheile din contactul autoturismului nu se coroboreaza cu niciun alt mijloc de proba, iar pe de alta parte, declaratia soferului potrivit careia Mihaela Schwartzenberg i-a distrus legitimatia de serviciu nu se coroboreaza cu niciun alt mijloc de proba, motiv pentru care nu se poate stabili daca ruperea respectivei legitimatii de serviciu, este urmarea unei fapte de distrugere”.

“Cu privire la sustragerea de catre Mihaela Schwartzenberg a cheilor din contactul autoturismului Libertatea – ocazie cu care Alexandru Sagaidac a fost zgariat la degetul mare de la mana dreapta – s-a stabilit ca Mihaela Schwartzenberg nu a luat cheile din contactul autoturismului in scopul de a si le insusi pe nedrept, ci pentru a-l determina pe sofer sa nu paraseasca locul incidentului, acesta efectuand manevre din care rezulta intentia sa de a pleca”, mai noteaza procurorii in rezolutie.

Fata de acuzatiile aduse de fotoreporterul Libertatea procurorii noteaza ca nu se poate retine in sarcina Mihaela Schwartzenberg comiterea infractiunii de “furt”, in dauna fotoreporterului, deoarece scoaterea rucsacului, cu accesorii foto, din posesia acestuia nu s-a facut in scopul insusirii, ci in scopul aflarii identitatii posesorului. Referitor la infractiunea de “distrugere, reclamata de fotoreporterul Libertatea, acesta nu a aratat nici in plangere si nici in declaratiile ulterioare pe care le-a dat in fata organelor de cercetare penala care bun al sau a fost distrus de Mihaela Schwartzenberg.

Parchetul arata ca, in seara de 13 martie, soferul Alexandru Sagaidac si Dumitru Angelescu, fotoreporter al ziarului Libertatea, s-au deplasat cu o Dacia Logan cu scopul de a o fotografia pe Mihaela Schwartzenberg , despre care aveau informatii ca in acea seara l-ar vizita pe colegul ei, Daniel Otil.

In acest scop, cei doi, au parcat autoturismul in spatele hotelului Rin Grand, iar in jurul orelor 22.00 au vazut-o pe Mihaela Schwartzenberg intrand in parcare la volanul autoturismului marca Volkswagen Touareg.

Deoarece aceasta a trecut pe langa autoturismul in care se aflau cei doi, acestia au pornit cu masina in urmarirea ei, dar, dupa numai cativa metri, Mihaela Schwartzenberg facut o manevra de intoarcere, moment in care cele doua masini au ajuns fata in fata.

Atunci fotoreporterul de la Libertatea a coborat si a inceput sa o fotografieze pe vedeta de televiziune. Aceasta, deranjata de faptul ca i se faceau fotografii, a coborat la randul ei din masina si i-a cerut fotoreporterului sa inceteze sa o mai fotografieze, indreptandu-se totodata spre acesta.

Fotoreporterul a continuat sa o fotografieze , iar cand a vazut ca Mihaela Schwartzenberg, foarte nervoasa, se indrepta spre el, a fugit inspre blocurile care se aflau in imediata apropiere.

Atunci Mihaela Schwartzenberg, dupa ce l-a urmarit cativa pasi pe fotoreporter, s-a intors spre autoturismul din care iesise acesta si a luat cheile masinii ziarului Libertatea precum si rucsacul fotoreportului, bunuri predate apoi.

So as many of you out there rely on Open Source technology as I do to conduct some R&D at the comfort of your desk probably know by now Rapid 7, the maker of the highly rated vulnerability assessment management solution NeXpose, has acquired the ever popular Metasploit Framework. As I was perusing the pages of the Offensive Security website I came across the following line in an article that jumped out at me “MSF itself has been placed under Rapid 7’s umbrella”. Of course as most of you who have already heard this news probably could imagine my mixed reactions. Are we going to have to now begin to pay for one of the best open source penetration testing products out there today? Is HD Moore going down the same path as Nessus by having a free version available to the open source community and a supported version for paying corporate customers? Either way I was happy for him and his crew of minions! Its not always that someone can be compensated for doing something they truly have a passion for and believe in. But of course as HD Moore can agree, hard work and patience do pay off! But the best part of this news is, according to Mike Tuchen President & CEO of Rapid 7, goes on to say in his acquisition announcement the Metasploit Framework will REMAIN OPEN SOURCE!! When I read this, I was not only thrilled that my favorite framework was still going to be available for me to use, but relieved. Of course we all know that the Metasploit is not an end all one stop shop for complete Penetration testing, although it is pretty darn close. It is a mere compliment to the arsenal of tools a tester should have at their disposal. So Congrats to HD and his crew on hard-work, commitment and most of all providing us with an outstanding framework. So get to work HD, and maybe next time you’ll come out with a framework that can also make coffee and donuts during an assessment!! Today was a very strange day. I don’t remember much of school except that JP took me, Elan, Joseph, and a girl, whose name escapes me, out of class for a photography class. Basically, JP told us the basics of camera settings and we went out and took pictures for an hour or so. I didn’t talk much, mostly because I wouldn’t know what to say. So I kept to myself. But that was only the beginning of my loneliness.

I haven’t felt lonely in a week or so, since I have been with Rochelle. After school, I took pictures of the LCC Battle Of The Bands try-outs. I hung out with Sadie for a while, well, until the Mulligans played. She left and chilled with her sister and the band. I was alone in a crowded room. I barely knew anyone and couldn’t really leave my spot because I was shooting. I started to droop into loneliness more and more as bands played their one song and moved on. By the end, I caught myself literally frowning at my isolation. I pulled my lips into a straight line of indifference to seem “professional” and not alone. The try-outs ended and I solitarily walked out.

To conclude my post, my day was very lonely and depressing. I hope to have a better one tomorrow. Night.

I still remember that accident clearly.  I’ve never seen that much blood before and that was the first time I’ve ever seen blood spurt out of me.  I’ve definitely grown as a cutter since then.  Even though I still have the urge to do it again I don’t have anything to cut myself with.  I do have some utility knife blades, but I need an actual knife to cut myself like I want to.

How I think and act can be scary to an outsider.  There’s nothing seriously wrong with me though.  I’m just depressed.  That’s all that’s wrong with me.  I can’t help it.  It feels I’m just stumbling through life with no direction whatsoever.  Will I ever find my way?  Is this why suicide is so important to me?  What will I get out of life?  I just don’t get it.  I feel lost and alone.

There was a large fire in the early morning at a house in central Lower Hutt.
The house where the fire started was completely destroyed and six neighbouring houses were damaged.

At this stage the fire is being treated as suspicious.

In 1839 “Binaural Beats” were discovered by H. W. Dove. Oster’s publication of “Auditory Beats in the Brain,” launched a wave of new research into frequency following response.

Any article or object is visible only when it reflects the light incident on it and its color can be determined by the wavelength of the reflected light. “Binaural” is the term meaning coming through two ears.

“Beats” are a wave phenomenon, based on the reinforcing or damping effects of two waveforms on one another. If you put two waves, of exactly the same frequency (Hz or cycles per second) and play around with their phase, you can get a “double big” wave if they are in phase or a zero wave if they cancel each other out. This is based on math, do it on paper and see that a sine wave does act this way. When the frequencies vary by a number of Hz, then the canceling/reinforcing becomes grosser and more audible, that is the number of “beats” per second. So f1-f2 = fb. Play a 440 and a 439 – you will get one beat per second. This is how piano tuners work, by counting beats to create the desired interval.

When they invented headphones, someone tried playing 2 slightly different frequencies in two ears. Lo and behold, there was a clear undeniable “beat” that was perceived. Try it yourself, you’ll hear it. Given bone conduction, etc., it is still a real perceptual thing. Like an optical illusion. The current term is “psychoacoustics” and the current explanation is that the integrative work of the brain is such that it adds these, during perception and cognition, when the stimulus does not contain them.

It is even better… you can get binaural “sum and difference” tones! If you play tones in either ear that constitute the interval of a third, you will hear a resonance, a creepy tone, which is very low. f1-f2. 495-440=55. Tartini discovered this on violin, and they still call them “Tartini tones.” This is available binaurally, so it is psychoacoustic, rather than simply acoustic.

Now, might I say that if there are healing powers inherent in this, or any other claim, then this claim is testable. If listening to Mozart makes you smarter (and you know any Mozart experts), and if passive exposure to beats and difference tones does anything, we have fine fodder for testing. Let’s go for it.

Les forces navales nord et sud coréennes ont échangé des tirs de semonce mardi derniers dans les eaux contestées, c’est ce que rapporte un responsable sud coréen de la défense.

Les deux corées se sont affrontées sur leur côte ouest, le premier incident de ce genre en 7 ans. Les deux pays s’accusent mutuellement d’avoir provoqué l’incident. Le président sud coréen Lee Myung-bak a convoqué une réunion d’urgence et a exhorté les militaires à faire en sorte que l’incident naval ne se transforme pas en un plus grand conflit, affirme l’agence Yonhap.

La Corée du sud a lancé 3 avertissements au navire Communist North dès que le navire avait traversé une ligne de démarcation mardi, selon Lee Ki Sik, le chef d’état major. Les Coréens du Sud ont ensuite tiré un coup de semonce, mais lorsque le navire nord-coréen a continué vers le sud, les Sud-Coréens ont ouvert le feu. Les nord coréens ont riposté avant de faire marche arrière, leur navire s’étant endommagé dans l’échange.

Barack Obama devait visiter la Corée du Sud dans le cadre de son voyage en Asie commençant jeudi prochain.

Le combat naval intervient quelques jours après que  la Corée du Nord  ait fait pression pour des négociations directes avec les États-Unis, affirmant que les deux doivent régler leurs différends avant de que des négociations significatives sur le nucléaire puissent avoir lieu rapportent les médias officiels.

La Corée du Sud minimise l’incident qui ne semble pas être une provocation délibérée, a déclaré un haut fonctionnaire de l’administation Obama à CNN. Les deux Corées  ont été profondément divisées depuis la guerre de 1950-53 entre eux qui a pris fin sans  traité de paix.
Il y avait, cependant, un armistice avec le commandement de l’ONU instituant la Northern Limit Line (NLL), une démarcation sur la mer Jaune, visant à éviter des affrontements maritimes. Mais les deux nations contestent l’emplacement exact de la frontière maritime et la Corée du Nord ne respecte pas la ligne.

Des affrontements ont eu lieu auparavant dans la mer Jaune, en particulier pendant la saison de pêche aux crabes, selon les nouvelles du site Web de défense Globalsecurity.org. Depuis 2001, les navires nord-coréens ont traversé la fois 65 LLN – 22 cette année – bien que la plupart de ces incidents ne soient pas devenus violents.

Le premier choc  mortel après  la guerre de Corée est survenu en Juin 1999 quand un navire nord-coréen a été coulé. Et en 2002, une série d’incursions en Corée du Nord a déclenché un échange qui a tué six marins sud-coréens et en a blessé neuf autres.
