Indalo on eteläafrikkalaisen Swartland Wineryn lippulaivatuote, jonka rypäleet valikoidaan osuuskunnan tarhojen parhailta palstoilta. Viinin erikoisuus on rypäleet tuottaneiden köynnösten kasvaminen niin sanotussa bush-trimmauksessa, pusikkomaisissa sykeröissä lähellä maanpintaa. Tämä perinteinen trimmaustyyli oli aikaisemmin yleinen Swartlandissa, mutta on tätä nykyä harvinaisempi. Samankaltaisiin ratkaisuihin voi yhä törmätä muun muassa Kreikan Santorinilla, toisinaan myös Ranskan Rhônessa ja Provencessa.

Koska puskien rypäleitä ei kyetä keräämään koneellisesti, kyseessä ei ole talouden näkökulmasta mielekkäin tapa kasvattaa viiniköynnöksiä. Laatua arvostavan viininystävän näkökulmasta tämä ei ole ongelma, sillä käsin keräämällä rypäleet säilyvät ehjinä, eikä sekaan eksy sinne kuulumattomia asioita suurissa määrin, kuten huonoja rypäleitä, lehtiä, hyönteisiä tai oksanpalasia. Samalla puskatrimmaus tuottaa luontaisesti pienen sadon. Molemmat asiat ovat edellytys laadukkaan viinin valmistukseen (vaikka suurista sadoista tunnetut samppanjanviljelijät sanoisivat mitä).

Indalo Cabernet Sauvignonin (9,14€) tuoksu tulvii kypsää mustaherukkaa, taustalla on kumia, pekoninrasvaa ja jopa hentoa tervaisuutta. Yllättävän kompleksinen tuoksu, jossa sekundaariset aromit ovat viehättävästi esillä. Tuoksu on uudenmaailman tyyliin antava, mutta ei liian makea. Myös alkoholin lämpö on läsnä, mutta pysyy taustalla. Viinin maku on mausteisen leveä. Keskivaiheessa läsnä on kauran flavoria muistuttava komponentti. Kypsän tanniininen lopetus on kohtuullisen pitkä.

You might think, this phrase sounds really cheesy! But I tell you: in the cheeky context Kevin and me used it, it is simply genial! Just have a look at this photo and you will understand:

Yes, we had the idea (and Kevin the patience) to write it on a fridge!

But what has this fridge to do with art, you might ask?

Well, I have currently a big exhibition in the Culture Centre of Mojacar. Have a look at the photo of the inauguration, taken just after we brought there the drinks and the food, and you will understand, at least partly.

You might have heard and personally noticed that our world is actually not in the best financial state, and well, Spain, for some different reasons which I don’t want to know (I prefer to put my head into the sand of our lovely beaches and wait until the crisis is over), is badly affected. This means, in particular, that our local town hall here has no more money to provide the inauguration buffet for its artists,

A real catastrophe, when one knows that most of the people who come to an inauguration come for the food and the drinks!

But not only can they not provide the buffet, there is not even a fridge there to keep everything cool until it has disappeared into these greedy mouths. I must say that  organising the buffet and keeping it fresh was extremely stressful for both of us. And this is why we decided to donate the quite new fridge from my former gallery in Albir (which I put up for sale some days ago, together with my house) to The Culture Centre, and, above all, to its exhibiting artists

Quite a cool gesture, isn’t it?

And in fact a powerful marketing move, although it was really not meant as such. We were just invited to put my name and  website on the fridge, but I thought the website was enough…

Esta mañana tenía previsto ir a ver unos campings. Ha pasado que ha amanecido lloviendo y he creido que no era plan de irme por ahí a la sierra de Cazorla en busca de lugares perdidos. Así que mientras tomaba un café en el DLNT se me ha pasado por la cabeza que podía ir a algún sitio, que no estuviera muy lejos y nada, pensado y hecho, me he ido a Mojácar. Ya estuve hace algunos años allí y la verdad es que no lo recordaba mucho hasta que he llegado y entonces sí que me sonaba todo e iba recordando incluso las callejas o los bares en los que estuvimos… el pueblo es precioso, la parte antigua sobre todo. También es verdad que estaba lleno de turistas, pero tampoco es malo eso supongo. Ya hay algunas fotos de las que he hecho.

Por cierto, he tomado la autovía nueva que une Cartagena con Alhama. Es un triunfo. Cartagena – Mojácar 90 minutos y sin exceder los límites de velocidad, más o menos. Lo que digo, un triunfo.

Y bueno, ya puestos, el Indalo ¿de dónde viene? He estado buscando allí en Mojácar una pegatina con el escudo de la ciudad para ponerla en mi maleta y no la he encontrado. En cambio sólo había pegatinas con el Indalo. Y me pregunto qué simboliza porque es distintivo de toda Almeria, desde el movimiento Indaliano en los años 50, al turismo Mojaquero, pasando por la Cueva de los Letreros o los camiones almerienses, el Indalo está por todas partes y no sabemos de dónde procede (o yo no lo sabía). Pues bien, en efecto se encontró una pintura rupestre en la Cueva de los Letreros, en Vélez Blanco en 1868; no era ni la más importante ni la más llamativa en absoluto. Y sin embargo siglos antes de que se catalogara por los estudiosos el Indalo ya era considerado como un símbolo de buena suerte en la zona norte y levante de Almeria, especialmente en Mojácar llegándose a llamar ‘muñeco mojaquero’ donde lo pintaban en las fachadas de las casas y ventanas. A mediados del siglo XX fue cuando surgió el ‘movimiento Indaliano’ de manos de intelectuales que reivindicaban la vitalidad y el renacer constante de Almeria desde lo esencial de sus culturas anteriores desde su antigüedad y este símbolo, desde entonces se ha ido dando a conocer como una imagen distintiva e inconfundible de Almeria y lo almeriense. Mola, ¿eh?.

El Indalo es desde hace medio siglo el símbolo reconocido de Almería y su provincia. Representa una figura antropomórfica sosteniendo el arcoris, aunque su estudio antropológico revela su origen como un cazador con el arco apuntando al cielo.

Su origen se encuentra en la cueva de los Letreros, en la localidad de Velez-Blanco, y es un dibujo rupestre de finales del Neolítico, al comienzo de la edad de cobre. Esta figura fue usada durante muchos años por los habitantes de las comarcas del norte y levante de la provincia como símbolo de buena suerte. Se pintaban en las paredes de las casas para ahuyentar los malos espíritus.

A mediados del siglo XX fue reivindicado por un movimiento de intelectuales almerienses (Movimiento Indaliano), como símbolo de la visión global de la ciudad y su uníón con las culturas anteriores que habían pasado por esta tierra. Los Indalianos sotenían que esta figura ancestral sostenía un arcoriris sobre su cabeza, y de ahí la representación actual.

El nombre Indalo tiene dos orígenes posibles, bien del antiguo íbero, indal eccius “mensajero de los dioses”, o bien toma su nombre del patrón de Almería, San Indalecio.  

En esta XXVI Hispacón, hemos querido tomar como nombre genérico nuestro símbolo particular, y bautizarla, como no podia ser menos INDALCON.

Hello everybody from Café Crem!

We -Miki & Kev Moore- are still away, in the South of Spain, enjoying the sun and the kindly atmosphere reigning here everywhere. Last time as we were together here, Cafe Crem didn´t even exist, you know, and the coffee cup collection in this house is rather rock´n roll oriented, as this is the place where Kev lived before we met. Interesting cups, of course but obviously cups for boys and I needed something more feminine and colourful. So today we thought, we should go to the beautiful village of Mojacar and buy two typical cups from this area. Here they are

The black guy on the cups and in the foreground is The Indalo Man, whom you can see everywhere you go in Mojacar.

The indalo represents a figure holding a rainbow, and appeared for the first time in a cave from the region. and is of prehistoric origin. The villagers of Mojacar regard it as a totem to drive away storms, a spirit with sufficient power to dominate the elements.

And I swear you: it works!

We have just made the test: the café au lait tastes wonderful in the Indalo cups!!!
