In a quest for continuous improvement, we’re having a think about our study guides. Most autho

In a quest for continuous improvement, we’re having a think about our study guides. Most authors have their documents online for students, be it PDFs (mostly) or word docs.. what the students do with those documents, I’m not entirely sure, and as far as I know, there’s no stats or research that might answer that question.

Even the stats for the eStudyGuide pages (discussed in earlier post – taking the xml from indesign to make a web front end for the study guides) don’t indicate any trend, the stats only show that people are looking at the front end, from where, for how long etc. Actually, there’s a possible answer there, I wonder if there’s any server stats on the PDFs, would the stats indicate how long the document is open in the browser, or would the stats just record the hit? I’ll have to find out. There’s got to be some data we can look at to know more about usage.

In the mean time, tell me what you would do with a PDF study guide if you were studying:

 View This Poll
survey software

So, anyway, back to the point of this, what is really the best way to serve up the documents online? If students are indeed reading on screen, perhaps we should put some time into looking at a better way to present it all, Adobe Digital Editions for instance might be a winner. Like Acrobat Reader, its a free program, but it’s for managing and viewing eBooks. Students would be able to manage and read all their study guides on their computer (making them more convenient, mobile, and so on), plus, the epub format would be easy as to spit out of InDesign (what our study guides are created in).

Creating a custom stroke is quite simple, it’s just not very obvious. First, you will need to open your strokes palette. If you do not have it open, you can go to Window > Stroke to open it. Once here, you should click on the flyout menu and select Stroke Styles. This will bring up a new dialog box that contains the stroke styles you currently have. Clicking on New will bring up another dialog box where you can change settings to create your new stroke style. Just change the name and modify the settings to fit your preference. Voila! You have successfully created a new stroke style.

I am in a yoga class and it keeps upgrading to pilates without telling me so. Why is it that when you are not very good at something you end up being overlooked in a class of 30? The yoga teacher walks around umming and ahhing and you can vaguely hear her positive comments about people way off into the distance but when she comes to you, nothing – a quick sidestep and a puzzled look at your “cow face pose”, yes that is a name of an actual pose.

I am talking about InDesign – I feel like I should let out a small/large scream after spending another afternoon in the maglab attempting to improve at this piece of software.

But it is infuriating, I feel completely inadequate and I do not look like this while I do it.

TSTC Publishing interns include six Texas State Technical College Students for the fall semester. They include:

Margarita Seely has been an advertising intern for TSTC since 2007 and will graduate with her associate’s degree in advertising in the spring of 2010. She and her husband, TSTC Biomedical Engineering Professor Garrett Seely, have two children, Gavin and Isabella. Margarita said in ten years, “ I plan to still be married and working. My kids will be twenty!” Margarita is a busy mom and wife; she enjoys supporting her kids, “being there for them, cheering them on,” she said.

James Haug is an Advertising, Design and Print Technology (ADP) student who commutes from Temple. Being an artist and a TSTC student runs in the family for James. His mother earned a degree from TSTC in commercial art. “I have been an artist since I was a little kid. I stole my mom’s sketchbook and started drawing,” James said. During his free time, James sketches tattoo designs and travels to Austin for the live music scene.

Jordan Long is a Waco native and an ADP student. As an intern, Jordan has created a poster and a flier for the MCC cookbook and a brochure about Waco sculptures for the Waco Cultural Arts Fest. Jordan said he enjoys the creative freedom the ADP field offers. “As a kid, I was always the doodler in class, said Jordan. In the future, Jordan would like to stay in design and advertising, possibly doing freelance work or working for himself. For now, he stays busy with his three kids and enjoys lifting weights.

George Harry Miller V is from Colony, Texas. Working at TSTC, George enjoys expressing creativity through assigned projects, such as the MCC cookbook cover, illustration works and other projects. When George isn’t working, he is on the soccer field practicing martial arts. “These activities help relieve stress,” George says. After graduation, George plans to move to the Dallas area and work in a graphic design firm.

Heather Lorraine Johnson is from Gatesville, Texas. An ADP student, Heather enjoys the creativity she gets to use in adverstising. In the future, Heathers plans to work in design packaging. “I’m not leaving Texas,” she said. Heather said in Texas, she is living in her element. In her free time, Heather enjoys playing the flute, watching TV and spending time with her two-year-old daughter Elizabeth. Heather will graduate from TSTC in December 2010.

Victoria Luz Ricoy is a second year double-major ADP and digital media student from Karnack, Texas. As an intern, Victoria designs book covers, interior page layouts for cookbooks and just completed a TSTC Publishing Christmas card. Victoria works mostly with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. In her free time, Victoria works at Bealls and takes full advantage of her employee discount. Victoria is looking forward to a bright future in the creative design aspect of advertising, and is considering living in Austin or San Antonio.
