The November 2009 NABE Outlook, compiled by the National Association for Business Economics, has a n

The November 2009 NABE Outlook, compiled by the National Association for Business Economics, has a new outlook for the rest of 2009 and 2010 based on data taken October 24 to November 5. The group is reaffirming that its recent call that the great recession is over. It also believes that this jobless recovery will abate within the next few months as companies begin to add jobs in 2010. There is still an expected sluggish consumer upturn but the NABE is looking for a sizable housing rebound, low inflation, and further rise in stock prices. The majority of panelists surveyed also are optimistic that the Federal Reserve’s policies will not lead to higher inflation, but they are extremely concerned about high federal deficits over the next five years.

Where this is interesting is what the NABE respondents are calling for in 2010 gains in the stock market and losses in the dollar and bond market next year. Some figures are as follows:

The fourth quarter of 2009 is now slated for a 3.0 percent pace of real GDP growth and 2010 is predicted to experience a gain of 3.2 percent over its four quarters; economic growth is projected to slightly exceed its trend pace—which NABE panelists estimate at 2.7 percent—over the next five quarters. Real GDP growth should also be enough to recover losses from the recession and return output to an all-time high by the end of 2010.

The household sector is still expected to lag behind the overall economy with projected sales of 11.6 million vehicles presenting continuing challenges for the auto industry.

NABE panelists believe the end of net employment losses is near with modest declines during Q4 and a bottom in Q1-2010 and gains thereafter. But some 61% of panelists do not expect a complete recovery of the previously lost jobs until 2012 and the unemployment rate is predicted to average 9.6% percent in the final quarter of next year.

Housing starts and residential investment are both expected to rise sharply in 2010, with housing starts expected to rise by 36% and residential investment will grow 9%. The NABE believes that house prices should see a modest gain of 2% in 2010.

The return of business investment will be an engine of growth with restocking inventories slated for 2010 with higher operating rates and corporate profits; growth is not expected in structures though. Corporate profits are expected to rise 12.4% in 2010 and respondents expect the S&P 500 Index to climb 9.5% in 2010.

Bad news stays there for the greenback… The NABE respondents expect that the U.S. dollar will weaken further in 2010 on a trade-weighted basket of foreign currencies, but it should stabilize against the Euro. But about 44% of respondents said that the ‘present foreign exchange value of the dollar’ was undervalued on a fundamental basis, and only 20% believed the dollar is overvalued fundamentally. Also noted was that 87% of respondents expect the dollar to be the major reserve currency in 2015.

Government spending is expected to rise 2% in 2010; and 55% expressed “extreme concern” about the federal deficit over the next five years.

Inflation is expected to remain low. Non-Farm compensation is expected to rise 2.3% in 2010 on labor productivity gains of 2.8%. The core PCE deflator is seen at a gain of +1.5% in 2010. The NABE panel forecasts the federal funds rate to remain in its current range of 0 to 0.25% until late next spring followed by a gradual rise and should remain low at 1.0% as 2010 ends. Longer-term interest rates are expected to rise, but most moves are believed to be priced in: 10-year Treasury note is expected to have a 4.20% yield by the end of 2010.

After we went up and down the whole report, there are some key takeaways here worth mention. Some are very informative or at least offer an insight into where the growth will be. That is huge for housing and would make 2010 the first real growth in about 5-years. The 9.5% gain in the S&P would translate to a price of 1,216 if the 1,111 price today is the 2009 closeout price. That 10-Year Treasury Note rise to 4.20%, if the 3.40% rate of today is that same at year-end, would give longer maturity bond fund investors implied portfolio losses of 5% on a constant maturity basis and more importantly on a static snapshot basis.

To improve external linking, for ex. you can add a link like http://smb-dimona.com/NL/vliegen/sitemap.html. This makes an extra external link.

You can also do internal linking, this means you can use anchor tags to create a site structure on your own domain.

Objective-C can be quite verbose, especially when handling nested data – there is no simple associative array indexing of the kind found in PHP, Ruby etc.

ObjC : verbose : id value = [map objectForKey:@"key"];

Using atx functions : concise : id value = at(map, @”key”);

This comes in very handy for deeply nested json data trees, where you might want to index a multidimensional array or nested tree – vis :

id pop = at(at(at(stats, @”USA”), @”NewYork”), @”popn”);

Not quite as simple as pop = stats["USA"]["NewYork"]["popn"]; but more readable than several objectForKey’s. Note, I propagate the nulls up so if an item is not found at any level, it can be checked once at the top level without crashing the app.

The small suite of related functions can be found at google code here, under BSD licence – http://code.google.com/p/xathack/

Good news heralds us from the current (11/23/09) issue of Time Magazine. The word is that some aspects of the current recession appear to have made people feel better!

The article refers to Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index Study¹, which has been following health and well-being data since its launch in January 2008.

The study was designed to function like a Dow Jones average of attitude. At least 1,000 people are surveyed daily, 350 days a year.

According to the results, when the stock markets dropped dramatically last fall overall happiness did too; and anyone who lost his or her job, house, or health care is probably still in a world of pain.

But here’s the really interesting finding: overall well-being was higher in the summer of 2009 than it was in the previous summer, before the impact of the recession was fully upon us. In fact, the latest report finds America’s happiness at an all-time high!

According to the article everyone – or at least everyone who claims to be happy – seems to have some reason for finding an “upside to the downturn.”

This data reinforces the observations made in our inaugural web column in March 2009. We noted that despite hardship, fear, and worry about the future, a number of people reported that their lives had also improved in some ways.

These included:

Spending more quality time with family and friends

Becoming more resilient and re-prioritizing key aspects of their lives

Reflecting on and shifting their core values, lifestyles, and spending habits

Reaching out and helping others, even when their personal financial situation was deteriorating

Perhaps you’ve experienced something similar this past year?

We invite you to take some time over this Thanksgiving break to consider the potential upsides to the downturn in your own life, as well as the ways in which you and your loved ones may have become stronger and healthier individuals as a result of the current constraints.

Best wishes to our American readers for a wonderful, gratitude-filled Thanksgiving!

Is to aru kagaku no railgun in your watch list for this season ?
i think if you like toaru majutsu no index , i think you will like this series too . ( may be a peaceful version of it ) hahahah
actually this series is a side story of majutsu no index . if you haven’t seen the original one , i think you should see it ~~

The To Aru Kagaku no Railgun side story is based on Kamachi’s original story set in Academy City, a city where about 80% of its 2.3 million citizens are students working to develop psychic powers and advanced technology. The story deals with the adventures of Misaka Mikoto, one of the Level 5 espers in the To Aru Majutsu no Index light novels.

and the opening song is sung by fripside . do you know fripside ?

FripSide is a Japanese pop duo that started in February 2002. When the group started, they were releasing their songs on the Japanese amateur and indie community, muzie. fripSide’s albums were always high in sales at muzie’s online CD shop. As of July 2006, more than 6,000 copies of the three original albums have been sold. and beside this anime , they also sing for koihime musou .

Let’s say that a webpage is about remote control and one of your keyword phrases is “remote control”

Let’s say that a webpage is about remote control and one of your keyword phrases is “remote control” and you’ve got a picture of a remote controller.

When a visitor lands on your webpage you have less than 20 seconds on average to interest that visitor. If the total of the sizes of the pictures on a webpage add up to more than 500 K then you run the risk of making a visitor wait while your page loads.

A page of nothing but text on a webpage can appear boring to human visitors but automated programs sent by search engines to index your page (“spiders” or “crawlers”) see only text.

A picture of a remote controller should be named “remote-controller.jpg” (not “left_front.jpg”) and include ALT text (shown when the viewer places the mouse on a picture) that describes the picture as a “remote controller”. The words in the name and the ALT text can be seen and indexed by search engine spiders. Using your keyword phrases appropriately in the filenames and ALT text is savvy internal search engine optimization.

Lets say your webpage has a company logo, the company logo is named “ABC-Company-Logo.png” and the ALT text says “ABC Company remote control solutions”. Do not make text part of the image, instead use surrounding text and a caption to include text to your logo. Search engine crawlers can not see text contained within a picture itself.

Here’s a small tip I found out while troubleshooting why my JVM was exiting in the middle of optimizing my index.

I created a utility class to create and close FullTextSessions for me that also created and committed a transaction at the same time for convenience throughout my code. But this meant that the
optimize()
method returned while Lucene was still working, thus leaving my index locked even after the JVM exited:

FullTextSession s = Search.getFullTextSession(factory.openSession());
s.beginTransaction();
s.getSearchFactory().optimize();
s.getTransaction().commit();
s.close();

To get the method to block until the optimization work is completed, do not create a transaction:

FullTextSession s = Search.getFullTextSession(factory.openSession());
s.getSearchFactory().optimize();
s.close();

I decided to work with YAGO (A huge semantic knowledge base) on my MySQL DBMS. So, I used it’s javatools to import it to my MySQL and today (Nov. 18th, 2009), after 6 days that MySQL was indexing the data, when we contacted the authors, they told us that YAGO has problems with MySQL, because of indexing values longer than 256. So, they suggested that we use PostGre.

Here is the log of my 6 days:

Creating indices on facts…
 The following indexes will be created:
CREATE INDEX factsidIndex ON facts (id)
CREATE INDEX factsarg1Index ON facts (arg1)
CREATE INDEX factsarg2Index ON facts (arg2)
CREATE INDEX factsrelationIndex ON facts (relation)
CREATE INDEX factsrelationarg1Index ON facts (relation, arg1)
CREATE INDEX factsrelationarg2Index ON facts (relation, arg2)
CREATE INDEX factsarg1arg2Index ON facts (arg1, arg2)
 On some systems, this fails. In these cases, please interrupt and create the indexes manually.
CREATE INDEX factsidIndex ON facts (id)… done (42 min, 30 s)
CREATE INDEX factsarg1Index ON facts (arg1)… done (9 h, 16 min)
CREATE INDEX factsarg2Index ON facts (arg2)… done (18 h, 5 min)
CREATE INDEX factsrelationIndex ON facts (relation)… done (19 h, 20 min)
CREATE INDEX factsrelationarg1Index ON facts (relation, arg1)… done (40 h, 19 min)
CREATE INDEX factsrelationarg2Index ON facts (relation, arg2)… done (57 h, 22 min)
CREATE INDEX factsarg1arg2Index ON facts (arg1, arg2)…
