In India there is a saying “Gayi bhains paani mein” which literally means “the buffalo has gone into the water”. It is believed that once a buffalo has gone into water it is impossible to take it out. Something similar is happening to the Scorpene sub deal with France.

scorpene submarine

The deal for six submarines which was signed in 2005, was worth nearly four billion dollars. This included deep ToT in many areas of Submarine technology. However, even after 5 years the entire project is stuck in quagmire of bureaucratic bungling, thanks to India’s Ministry of Defence (MoD). In an apparent bid to show (falsely) that a lot of indigenous technology was being used, MoD twisted the deal terms to make it look like materials and technology was being procured from Indian firms. In reality, everything was being procured from the French firm Armaris, but was not recorded in the documents. At the time of deal signing the cost these items was estimated at $580 million. After 5 years Armaris is asking more than a $1 billion for the same items.

Now the esteemed defence minister Mr. Antony and his sidekick, Minister of State for Defence, Mr. Pallam Raju are running from pillar to post to make the French to reduce the price. The French till date have given him a nothing, not even an assurance.

It is estimated that the program is now delayed till 2015 or more. It is quiet obvious to even a layman that these submarines will no longer be the state of art subs that India signed up for by the time they are inducted. These will be just old heap of junk with massively inflated price tags.

“Gai bhains paani mein” is the most apt description here. The only moot point is that these buffaloes cost more than a billion dollar a piece.

FLAG

Some enthusiastic students of Maharaja’s college, Ernakulam, decided to hoist the Tricolour flag in the college, on 14.8.1947 midnight.

Somehow their plan was leaked to the authorities of Cochin State where the college is located.

As soon as the flag fluttered on top of the post in rain, goondas attacked the boys and they (students) were later arrested, I am not sure.

The king was free, not the people!

In Travancore State, the movement against the autocratic King and his wily Divan took a bloody turn when the people were mowed down like in Jalianwalla Bagh, by machine gun fire at Vayalar.

In Nizam’s land in Hyderabad, peoples’ war against the ruler was initially encouraged by the new Emperor in Delhi, but was later crushed by the military.

The freedom fighters under Subash Bose, who were Indian Army men held prisoners by Japan, earlier, were tried for treason by the Government in Delhi (after 14.8.1947) and convicted. What would they have done, if Bose was caught?

Those of the Indian Navy, who mutinied against the British rulers, were not spared either.

Even today, poor Manmohan Singh has to toe the dictates from Washington !

Who said we are free?

So after lot of thinking and inspiration from my calss mates i have finally decided to start blogging. So lets see how many days i do it . If my calculations are right it want be there for more than a month. Month because i have a month of holidays and nothing special to do. So a ‘MONTH’.

So it is natrual again my inspiration is Mr. Arvind S Raj. Well i have done lots of things inspired by him. So another to the list. Guys you should all see his blog. It has a class and charm.

So since this is my first blog i will write something about myself. I am George Varghese K doing my B.tech in computer science engineering at Amrita College of Engineering. Well i am staying in the hostel itself. My dad is a officer in the Indian Navy, and also a submariner. He is also an Engineer from Mar Athanasius College of Engineering . After which he did his course in the Naval Academy. My mom is a house maker. Dont go by her proffession, she is much more qualified than my dad. She has done her masters in Economics and many more courses over it.It was only a sacrifice for us that she is a house maker . Next ma sis. A total freak. So is her field, JOURNILISM. Well she is doing her masters in journilism and mass communication.

So this my sweet family. Well now to talk of my schooling. It is just to funny. Have u heard anyone changing 7 schools in 12 years of studying. Well this is what happens when ur dad is working in the Armed Forces. Well it is fun really. You get to make lot of friends and have the chance to visit places which civilians dont get to go. Well after all i am Navy Personal.I have stayed in many naval bases. The best i liked is Vizag Base. A very calm and quiet place.

So well this is all about me in short. So hoping to write more……….

Kochi: Another glass ceiling was broken on Friday as two women were commissioned into the Indian Navy as navigators in the flying branch, in a way also becoming the first women combatants in the armed forces.

Sub Lieutenants Ambica Hooda of Haryana and Seema Rani Sharma of Uttar Pradesh were awarded their “Wing” at the passing out parade here.

“Hooda was adjudged the best trainee in flying of the first Short Service Commission Observer Course. All the graduated officers would now join different squadrons of the navy, where, they would fly Maritime Patrol Aircraft and helicopter”, Indian Navy spokesperson Commander Roy Francis told sources.

In the navy, the job of a navigator is also that of a combatant as, unlike in the air force, all its fixed wing aircraft can be used for combat purposes. Its maritime patrol aircraft are also capable of firing.

“This is the first time women are being commissioned as navigators in the Indian Navy. It is a proud moment as both of them have completed their training with flying colours,” the spokesperson added.

The navigator’s job is challenging. Apart from keeping track of the aircraft’s position at all times, the navigator’s responsibilities include planning the journey, advising the pilot of the estimated timing to destinations while en route and ensuring that weather hazards are avoided.

Hooda and Sharma, both 22 years old, completed a 16-month course at the Naval Academy at Mandovi in Goa and other professional schools of the Indian Navy before landing up at the Observer School at INS Garuda here. The navy terms its navigators as observers.

Earlier this year, the Indian Air Force (IAF) had commissioned Flying Officer Kavita Barala as its first woman navigator. However, she will be flying on non-combatant transport aircraft.

The issue of inducting women into the combatant arms of the military has been generating considerable heat of late. The IAF vice chief, Air Marshal P.K. Barbora, had created a storm earlier this week when he said, perhaps in jest, that the force could in the foreseeable future take in women as fighter pilots if they committed not to have children.

Two years ago, Defence Minister A.K. Antony had asked the three service chiefs to examine the question of inducting women in combat arms. They said it was not feasible at the moment for a variety of reasons.

Women currently can hold permanent commissions only in the Armed Forces Medical Services, where they can serve up to a maximum age of 58 years if they rise to three-star rank. Otherwise, women can only hold short service commissions that enable them to serve a maximum of 14 years in the support arms of the three services. IANS

What is it with North Korean ships and clandestine arms shipments? And why are we surprised each tim

What is it with North Korean ships and clandestine arms shipments? And why are we surprised each time we catch them? From the very first interdiction of a North Korean vessel years ago carrying weapons to Pakistan, there have been too many times North Korea has been caught illegally trying to export missile technolgy. The North Korean weapons program has over the years extended from Pakistan to Iran. Last month, the Indian Navy stopped a North Korean ship on its way to yet another country – Burma. This recent seziure by the UAE Navy should therefore be placed in context of a much bigger, but entirely predictable pattern. Doesn’t someone somewhere keep a manifest of all North Korean ships, particularly as the country exports pretty much nothing else? And if not, shouldnt they? Just knowing where these ships are heading would tell us a great deal about who the buyers are, even if we never get to actually board them.
