Tune in on Monday, 11/30, at 2 p.m. (105.9 FM in Burlington, VT or online at theradiator.org) to hear the second half of a conversation with Scott Russell Sanders, author of fiction and nonfiction. His latest is A Conservationist’s Manifesto.

We live in a society that is fixated on celebrity. Not just celebrity of people, but celebrity of places. So that there’s a relatively small number of cities in America, obvious places like New York and Los Angeles and Seattle and so forth, that are thought of as real places, alive places, places that are good to live in, places where interesting things happen and interesting people live. And those certainly are all wonderful places. but most Americans live elsewhere. Most Americans live in small towns in Vermont or farm villages in Indiana or in medium-to-small cities like Burlington or Indianapolis or Saint Louis and so forth. And those are real places, too. Real human life occurs there and it seems that it shouldn’t be necessary to say that. But many people who grow up there and become writers or become photographers, who grow up in places that are not the celebrity cities, tend to dismiss the places they come from as not worthy of their attention. Nobody’s ever going to publish a book that is set in rural Vermont. Nobody’s ever going to publish a book that is set in a small town in Indiana. You have these preconceptions. And to considerable extent, the media reinforce those preconceptions. Well, my view is that human life happens everywhere humans live. and the things that matter to humans—life and death and falling in and out of love and the birth of children and the pursuit of causes and the development of skills and pursuit of work and so forth, those things happen wherever there are humans, and all places deserve attention. They deserve not necessarily uncritical praise. I think loving a place and caring about a place includes the willingness to recognize its shortcomings. And … insofar as it’s within one’s power, to work to remedy those shortcomings.

- Scott Russell Sanders, speaking on Write The Book

From POLITICO: By all public estimations, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) is a pretty go

From POLITICO:

By all public estimations, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) is a pretty good golfer.

He should be, given the $82,998 his political action committee has spent on golf outings so far this year, according to Federal Election Commission filings.

(In the golf cart, left to right: Joseph Bruno, Jack Abramoff, Steve Buyer, Salvatore DiMasi)

The golf events this year sponsored by Boehner’s Freedom Project political action committee have stretched from April until October, from Florida to Ohio. And the minority leader doesn’t hold his events at worn-out municipal courses.

…snip…

The highest expenditure was a September event at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. The Freedom Project spent $29,501.20 for an event on the course, which hosts the annual PGA Memorial Tournament.

…snip…

The FEC reports don’t list the attendees at these golf events, the cost per person or any other details. Don Seymour, a spokesman for the PAC, said the expenditures are “related to events that have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to help the Freedom Project support Republican candidates for Congress.”

What is it about those dimpled balls? From The New York Times:

ALBANY — For Joseph L. Bruno, once one of the most powerful politicians in New York, the road to trouble was soft, grassy and green.

It was on the rolling fairways of his suburban country club that Mr. Bruno, the former State Senate majority leader, pitched labor officials on investing pension money with a firm called Wright Investors’ Service, usually without telling them that Wright was paying him hundreds of thousands of dollars for his efforts.

It was on a golf junket to Florida that Mr. Bruno first sold an Albany-area entrepreneur on the idea of paying him generous fees to help drum up investment, including earmarks that were arranged by the senator himself.

Golf was so central to Mr. Bruno’s intertwined business and political careers, in fact, that he ordered a Senate ethics lawyer to determine whether a lobbyist could pay his greens fee if the game was part of a charity tournament.

…snip…

For Mr. Bruno, who federal prosecutors say improperly mixed his political and business interests and sought to deceive the public about it, golf provided more than just exercise and a chance to unwind. It also assured privacy, hours at a stretch to bond with clients, and the occasional vacation on someone else’s dime.

With hardly a day of Mr. Bruno’s corruption trial here passing without some mention of golf, his name can now be added to a list of politicians whose taste for the tees led them to trouble.

In June, Salvatore F. DiMasi, a former speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, was indicted on charges that during rounds of golf, he plotted to rig state computer software contracts. This fall, an Indiana congressman, Steve Buyer, came under scrutiny when it was revealed that a charity he established to help teenagers pay for college had spent nothing on scholarships but $260,000 on lavish golf junkets.

And the Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff, now serving four years in prison for bribery, fraud and tax evasion, routinely flew members of Congress and other officials to exclusive golf resorts in Scotland, California or the Mariana Islands.

From TALKING POINTS MEMO (October 22, 2009):

Rep. Steve Buyer (R-IN) has long been a passionate golfer. Last year, Golf Digest ranked the lawmaker 32nd, with a handicap of 5.6, on its list of the top 200 golfers in Washington.

Like many members of Congress, Buyer has a history of mixing business and pleasure on the golf course. Now, it looks like the financial dealings of a questionable foundation created by Buyer were even more golf-driven than previously known.

It’s been reported that the Frontier Foundation, which has been criticized for raising hundreds of thousands from industry groups seeking to influence Buyer while giving out nothing for its stated purpose of helping Indiana students pay for college, raised virtually all of its money on posh golf junkets. Those included trips with Buyer and groups of lobbyists to deluxe courses at Disney World and the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas.

Buyer also found himself in trouble in the mid-1990s after he didn’t report a golfing trip to Lake Tahoe paid for by a telecom lobbying group.

He has claimed the Frontier golf trips are “not fun for me” because travel is a lot of work.

…snip…

[...] it’s telling that $4,500 of the $10,500 given out by Frontier over six years may have been paying for the golf-enthusiast lawmaker to get his fix. (Remember, though, Buyer doesn’t even enjoy playing.) And all this while the foundation wasn’t giving out a cent in scholarships.

From TALKING POINTS MEMO (November 12, 2009):

Rep. Steve Buyer (R-IN) sat down for an interview with CBS Evening News about his charity, but struggled to answer basic questions about the Frontier Foundation, which collects big donations from industry sources trying to influence Buyer but gives out no money for its putative mission of supporting Indiana students.

Buyer abruptly ended the interview with CBS, which aired last night, literally rushing out of his seat to make a meeting.

Among the questions he couldn’t answer: why the foundation, which as recently as last month shared space with Buyer’s campaign office in Monticello, Indiana, no longer has a physical address.

…snip…

Asked by reporter Sharyl Attkisson about legislation he has introduced or supported that helps donors to Frontier, Buyer says at one point: “Trying to match up legislation like that is erroneous. You shouldn’t do that Sharyl. I think that it’s, I think it’s wrong.”

Check out one key exchange, where CBS asks Buyer about the fact that all of the donations to the foundation come from lobbyists and corporate sources with interests that Buyer has supported:

Attkisson: From what I can tell, all of the donors have interests before committees that you sit on in Congress.

Buyer: Well, the committees in which were, uh, the committees, the corporations in which provided support, like I said, were those original companies. Please do not assume that if a company contributes to the foundation that that’s somehow some type of influence upon what I’m about to do.

CBS also uncovers the fact that the $25,000 in seed money that started the foundation came from PhRMA. We’ve previously noted that PhRMA is the single biggest donor to the foundation, giving at least $200,000 over the past several years. TPMmuckraker reported late last month that PhRMA also hired Buyer’s son — who is on the board of the foundation — to work at its Washington headquarters. Buyer is a member of the House Energy Subcommittee on Health, which regulates drugs.

(Video at TALKING POINTS MEMO link, and, seriously, you really have to watch it, kids! )

I didn’t realize there were early college football games on today otherwise I would have done this earlier and made some bets. Unfortunately I was stuck at work.

I was going to play Rutgers -3 and Cincinnati -20.5, but the games started before I had a chance. Other games that were playable include: Colorado State -3, Kent State +4, Tulsa -14.5, and Bowling Green -7. I got my Nebraska -10 pick in, but didn’t get to post here in time

Here are my other picks:

Pittsburgh 0 (vs WVU)

Boise State -9.5 (buy 4pts) (vs Nevada)

The Boise spread opened at -10 which would may have been fine but now it’s up to -13.5 which is too close for comfort. Nevada is a good team with a strong offense. They are on an 8-0 run after losing their first 3 and have score more than 50 points in 5 of those 8 and more than 30 in all of them. Last year Nevada only lost by 7. I may just steer clear of this game, especially since my NCAAF system is so new and untested.

NBA:

DEN -12.5 (vs NY)

PHI +12.5 (buy 7) (vs ATL)

DAL +2.5 (buy 4) (vs IND)

I’ll play Denver straight, but the other two games I’ll have to work into a teaser if I want anything out of them. I’d do PHI, DAL, and any other team I mentioned in the last post in a 7pt teaser if I were to play them.

WindStream Technologies Inc. is locating a new development and production facility in the Purdue Res

WindStream Technologies Inc. is locating a new development and production facility in the Purdue Research Park of Southeast Indiana and creating 260 jobs by 2012. The small scale wind turbine manufacturer plans to invest several million dollars to establish a new operation at the Purdue Technology Center in New Albany. The startup, currently operating out of Manhattan Beach, California, is looking for assembly and distribution workers and professional staff.

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (Nov. 23, 2009) – WindStream Technologies, Inc., a manufacturer of wind energy technology announced today that it will site a new development and production facility here, creating more than 260 new jobs by 2012.

The company, which manufactures small scale wind turbines called TurboMills, will invest several million dollars to establish its newest operations at the Purdue Technology Center in the Purdue Research Park of Southeast Indiana.

“WindStream Technologies represents yet another win for Indiana’s growing renewable energy economy,” said Governor Mitch Daniels. “We know the partnership created by WindStream and Purdue Research Park will result in new high-growth opportunities for Hoosiers.”

The startup, currently operating out of Manhattan Beach, Calif., plans to begin hiring assembly and distribution associates and professional staff as facility and equipment upgrades are made at the site.

“We are very excited about the opportunity of locating our operations in New Albany and the support that Indiana has pledged to the company. It was clear from our first discussions that Indiana is looking to become a leader in the green economy and WindStream is proud to be a part of that positive effort,” said Dan Bates, president and chief executive officer of WindStream.

WindStream’s TurboMills are designed to capture wind energy in urban settings. The devices are engineered to be an efficient, low-cost option used to supplement a customer’s energy needs, reducing electricity cost and carbon footprint.

“Companies such as WindStream Technologies fit in well with the environment of the Purdue Research Park network,” said Joseph B. Hornett, senior vice president, treasurer and chief operating officer of the Purdue Research Foundation. “WindStream Technologies is the second company to move from another state into the Purdue Research Park of Southeast Indiana, which shows that the state of Indiana is a highly coveted location for businesses to prosper.”

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered WindStream Technologies up to $1.5 million in performance-based tax credits and up to $84,500 in training grants based on the company’s job creation plans. The city of New Albany will provide additional funding for facility improvements and equipment purchases at the request of One Southern Indiana.

“We are excited about these jobs and very proud to welcome WindStream Technologies as our newest corporate citizen,” said Mayor Doug England. “Attracting a cutting edge company such as this to New Albany is evidence that the Purdue Research Park of Southeast Indiana will play a critical role in this region’s future economic prosperity.”

WindStream’s announced expansion in New Albany comes only two weeks after Kemper Foods announced it would invest more than $6.8 million to expand its food production facility here, creating more than 350 new jobs by 2012.

About Windstream Technologies
WindStream Technologies is a developer of small scale wind turbines for the micro wind power market. The company, based in Manhattan Beach, Calif., has created technologies and manufacturing processes for the development and assembly of small scale wind turbines to capture wind energy in urban settings. Captured energy is used to supplement the energy requirement of low-power systems and equipment.

This article is from The Guardian in the United Kingdom. However, with the lack of concern about domestic violence in Indiana and it’s affects on children, a program definitely needs to started here like this. And while having school children learn about what is right and wrong, make the state legislators, all family court judges, and CPS/DSC personnel, who continue to turn their back on abuse if custody is involved, get some training on this also. They all seem blind to the fact children are horribly affected by this….they don’t seem to care. Family court judges willingly hand full custody to abusers here in Indiana, and refuse to consider bona fide abuse and expert testimony in their decisions. Someone in this state has got to step up and do what is right for the children here.

What role should teachers have in preventing domestic violence?

Classes about abusive relationships are to become compulsory for children as young as five. Chris Keates says they could break the cycle of misery in homes

Domestic violence and bullying are about the exploitation of power differentials.

Evidence demonstrates that one in four women will experience some form of domestic violence during their lifetime. What is often overlooked is the impact of this abuse on the thousands of children and young people who witness, experience and in some cases perpetuate this violence.

We know that the experience of domestic violence manifests itself in the behaviour of school pupils in a variety of ways. Children and young people who live in domestic abuse situations may have an increased risk of being bullied or be unable to fully participate in school life. Their anger and distress may also lead them to bully other pupils, and educational attainment often suffers.

To argue, as some have done, that tackling domestic violence should not fall within schools‘ remit is to miss the point. The teaching union Nasuwt believes that educating young people about healthy relationships and tackling bullying, violence and other inappropriate behaviour towards women and young girls is central to schools’ purpose.

The Nasuwt was the first union to launch a programme of work on prejudice-related bullying, and has worked closely with the TUC on tackling violence against women in the workplace. We have been at the forefront of raising this problem and have ensured it is included in government anti-bullying guidance.

Both domestic violence and bullying are about the exploitation of power differentials: government figures show that in the 2006/07 academic year there were 3,500 temporary exclusions and 140 permanent exclusions from schools in England for sexual misconduct, including incidents such as groping, using sexually insulting nicknames, daubing obscene graffiti and serious sexual attacks.

In total, 280 of the fixed-term expulsions were from primary schools, and in 20 cases the child responsible was just five years old.

Using personal, social and health education to develop discussion and learning on domestic violence is an important starting point, and enables all of these issues to be considered coherently. However, this will be futile if the issue is not seen as the responsibility of the whole school. If behaviour in the playground and whole school environment is inconsistent with messages in the classroom, school pupils may not take the issue seriously. Staff, parents, governors and students all need to adopt a zero-tolerance attitude to all forms of violence and discrimination.

Domestic violence is an emotive and complex issue and it will be critical that schools are able to draw upon the expertise of qualified staff (other than teachers) who are best able to deliver specific advice and knowledge. An increase in education on domestic violence and abuse may also lead to an increase in students disclosing violence in their homes. It will be important that appropriate training and support is provided for school staff to be able to deal with this.

Domestic violence tends to repeat itself down the generations. Today’s announcement from the government is a welcome and important opportunity to break this cycle of abuse and ensure future generations are better equipped to resist the misery that domestic violence inflicts on all those caught up in it.

• Chris Keates is general secretary of the Nasuwt teaching union

I got to thinking about this story again one night while I was reminiscing my experiences at Tenness

I got to thinking about this story again one night while I was reminiscing my experiences at Tennessee women’s basketball games, and I thought it was pretty funny.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m sure that Purdue’s a fine institution. I even have a couple friends who go there, but this is mostly the reason why I developed a healthy disdain for the school’s campus, which I feel lacks in beauty, and apparently on Easter, a place to eat.

Think back to Easter Sunday 2008, when just the night before my grandmother had lectured my mom about the fact that we were not going to be able to have a traditional Easter dinner since we were going to West Lafayette to see the Lady Vols play in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Well, after hearing that, I just assumed that I should save my grandmother the heart attack and not tell her that we had no dinner at all.

After driving around forever trying to find the entrance to the parking lot for Purdue’s Mackey Arena, which was as clear as mud, we had to ask a traffic cop where to eat. He suggested several fast food places (definitely not where you would want to have Easter dinner) and added that there were not many places to eat on campus (have they no students there, or just a bunch of starving people?). We wandered around for a while before we found a bar and grill place that accepted all ages (I was only days away from turning 17 at the time). Upon opening the door to the restaurant, it was obvious that the traffic cop was right. This was one of the only places open today. The restaurant was overcrowded and there did not appear to be much staff, so we just seated ourselves at the lone empty table and waited. A few minutes later, a fairly stressed-out woman in her twenties sat down with us and informed us that she had come in earlier that day wanting some food, but then found herself busing tables after no one came in to work. I was baffled by her almost unbelievable story. Great. We were in the only restaurant on campus and being served by a woman who didn’t even work there! She later admitted that there were only two cooks in the back, one of whom had just arrived, and it took them almost an hour to serve one table. We understood and waited for food as long as we could before we had to cancel our order and head over to the arena, but not before we left the poor woman a generous twenty-dollar tip.

The worst thing about Mackey Arena that I did not realize until getting there is that the ushers have NO idea about the layout of the arena. Or, at least the ushers who were there for that game. Still puzzled about Purdue’s lack of employment (even though they had known that they would be hosting the first and second rounds of the women’s tournament that week for quite some time), we get into the arena and find Section 2. As we walk down the isle leading to Section 2, we hand our tickets to the usher, who requests to see them. Remembering my father, who works at the NCAA, saying that they were good seats, I was quite surprised to see the usher pointing us up to the rafters. As I made my way up the stairs in confused disappointment, I could hear my dad’s voice getting high as he argued with the usher, desperately trying to explain that our tickets said Section 2 Row 12, not Section 102, which was where the usher was trying to put us. It became obvious that the blind usher was not going to budge and I made my way to Section 102 Row 12, only to see that it was closed off for ESPN media. Therefore, we should be right, right? We returned to the usher to explain this situation, that Section 102 Row 12 was not open to the public and thus it was impossible for us to sit there. The only other logical solution was for us to sit in OUR real seats in the lower bowl of Section 2! But despite my father’s experts, the usher refused to let us into Section 2 and directed us over to the Section 3 usher.

So, we went over to the Section 3 usher and handed him our tickets, only to have him say that we were in the wrong section and that we needed to go to Section 2.

WE JUST CAME FROM THERE!

Though we could have easily accessed our seats from Section 3 since it was connected to Section 2, the usher simply refused to let us in and made us return to the Section 2 usher, infuriated.

Finally, after about a half an hour, we were finally allowed to sit in our CORRECT seats and I cheered whole-heartedly against the Boilermakers as they faced Utah. Unfortunately Purdue won, but, on the other hand so did the Lady Vols, forcing a matchup between the two in the second round game two days later. Needless to say, that second round game (which by the way was played on my 17th birthday) was the last time I would see a game in Mackey Arena. I guess the only good thing about that little Easter adventure was that it made the Lady Vols’ 35-8 lead over Purdue in the first half that much sweeter.

Ok, so if you want the truth, I didn’t go there because I didn’t think the campus was that pretty and it’s known for more of the engineering and sciences, not art. This game was actually not the initial deciding factor. I’m not quite that shallow!

Welcome to historic Logansport, Indiana! It’s so old, it’s overpasses have cave paintings.

This town is forward-thinking though. Their buildings step up in height just like cell phone signal bars.

And convenience stores made even more convenient because you can drive through them!

I really liked the font on the City Building.

It looks like pacman.

The reason we chose to visit Logansport out of the many other small towns in Indiana is because Erica’s boyfriend, Kevin (or BK as he’s affectionately known) used to work for the Pharos Tribune, before he was deported back to England. Here’s his old place of work.

The other reason to visit Logansport? They have an awesome carousel!

Too bad some kid was having her birthday party there so it was closed to the public. Logansport has some beautiful historic homes.

And some historic homes that need a little work.

I’m not sure how I feel about the restoration efforts here, though.

I feel like those colors work well in New Orleans, but I’d like something more conservative in the Midwest. I think the next house was my favorite.

It could use some fixing up and some tall trees, but I love the basic shape of the house. Speaking of houses, they are apparently pretty cheap in Indiana. Here’s one for less than $50,000!!

And you know, Logansport wouldn’t be that bad to live in. They have a Mr. Happy Burger.

Along with this lovely little park near the confluence of the Wabash and Eel Rivers.

It was the perfect spot for some self-timer photos.

Ooops… too close. Let’s try that again.

Much better.

We wandered around town some more. I saw a cemetery in the distance and naturally headed that direction.

On our way out of Logansport, we ate more of the cookies we bought at the Stone House Bakery and thought how much better they would be with some milk, but we didn’t want to stop at a store. And then we remembered – the Zip Thru!

We briefly stopped in Monticello on our way home. Erica humored me by pausing at this abandoned warehouse that caught my fancy.

I love that Erica is perfectly fine stopping on the side of the road on our way home just because I really wanted a picture of the sun setting over the cornfields.

That seems like a pleasant way to end my entries from my trip to Indiana.

–Brother? Brother can you hear me? He could hear, though whom he had no idea nor why the voice

–Brother? Brother can you hear me?

He could hear, though whom he had no idea nor why the voice seemed to rise from a background of white noise. Brother Crawford was sitting on the ground, moist soil and green tufts of grass but could feel a stern rocky terrain beneath him. The air smelled of fish and honeysuckle.

–Are we near the river?

–A stones throw, yes, Brother.

Limp legs barely lifted him aloft. He was standing on a rocky shoal in the center of the White River rolling swiftly by in green and brown shades of sunlit sparkle. Brother Crawford began to panic. The water pulsed and eddied around his small island, eroding it grain by grain, pebble by pebble, carrying the debris southward to join the Wabash, flowing on into the Ohio before becoming lost in the Mississippi to be swept out into the vastness of the sea. His foothold was dwindling rapidly.

–What do i do?

–Find a clear spot upstream and head for it.

Brother Crawford felt deja vu, thick and suffocating, leading him into an inevitable moment, a preordained circumstance. Things came back to him, in a swift rush of images and feelings, washing away his sense of time and place.

–That is what you said to me that day.

–And what we did.

–But i got there and looked back. You were gone. They told your parents that an undercurrent took you away. i thought maybe i saw your hand, drifting backwards downstream but i’ve always wanted to think it was a tree branch.

–It doesn’t matter now, Brother. Find a clear spot upstream and head for it.

–i already said you told me that once before. Look what happened.

–Yes, Brother. i did, and you made it safely home that day. Take my advice and just leap.

–It’s awfully hard to find a decent place to jump from here.

–It usually is. Just do the best you can, Brother.

Brother’s island was nearly half the size now as it had been, sand sweeping downstream as steady as if falling through an hourglass. He was alone on the island and no longer felt comfortable there, the river glassy and bright inviting him, parting to embrace his body as it broke the surface.

Last night was fun, but here’s hoping the Raps have something left in their run-and-gun legs. Coming off a 123-112 home win over the Pacers, Toronto is in Charlotte tonight to face the 4-9 Bobcats. Full game coverage and other great Raptors stuff is available over at Raptors Republic.

Charlotte snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 104-88 win over Indiana on Sunday, its first win since picking up renowned douchebag Stephen Jackson in a deal with Golden State early last week. Jackson’s production with the Bobcats has been par for his course — decent scoring numbers (17.6), low shooting percentages (42.6 from the field and 29.4 from deep) and little in the way of wins (one in four games). He and Gerald Wallace share the scoring load on a team void of any real star players — one that Raptors should be able to handle even on a back-t0-back.

Last night’s Raptors performance was typical of the way they’ve played in most of their wins this season — great offense, no D and a sketchy second half before closing out strong. Jose Calderon had his best game, attacking early both with the drive and from deep and finishing with a season-high 21 on 8-of-11. Chris Bosh was sloppy offensively, but I’m counting on him bouncing back with a strong effort and leading the boys to a win tonight.

The Raptors and Bobcats get going from Charlotte at seven.

Speedway Jr. High School was filled with nervous and excited chatter on Tuesday morning as students were expecting a special guest. Kathy Owen the P.E. teacher and advisor for the Fuel Up to Play 60 program planned the event making this opportunity possible for fifty lucky students to meet a young athlete making a name for himself in the NFL. Joseph Addai, a running back for the Indianapolis Colts in his fourth season, referred to his body as a fancy car he wants to fuel up with gas (nutrient rich foods), an analogy used to paint a picture of the importance of good nutrition as a part of fueling up with energy.

Before Addai was introduced, the atmosphere was set by a skit acted out by Ball State dietetic interns to show how important breakfast is for the beginning of the day. The scene began in a first period gym class. One intern played an energetic, hyper student while the other played a tired, lagging student who forgot to have breakfast. The two were chatting while exercising and sharing ideas for breakfast on the go. When the skit was over the interns interacted with the students by asking for ideas and feedback on what he or she does at home when pressed for time. The presentation was finished off by showing display boards with more simple breakfast ideas, such as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or pizza and milk.

Next, Colts Cheerleaders spoke to the students on the importance of eating healthy and portion control. The cheerleaders shared their eating habits and how exercise everyday can help an individual stay fit and lead a healthy lifestyle. They emphasized the importance of eating fruits and vegetables, drinking lots of milk, and eating whole grains as part of a well-balanced diet.

As Addai was introduced the excitement of the students erupted which created an exciting energy in the room. Students were able to ask Addai an array of questions from his favorite play to how being a role model has affected his life. Addai’s take home message led back to his ability to keep a healthy lifestyle by staying active all year round and keeping his body fueled up with the right nutrition, especially when starting his day. The event ended with a celebratory lunch and autograph session allowing students to meet Addai one on one.

I’ve been tossing the idea around to get a new LCD HDTV set, but I don’t think I will, h

I’ve been tossing the idea around to get a new LCD HDTV set, but I don’t think I will, here’s why.

I got a letter in the mail from the evil Cable Overlords known as Comcast. In addition to the obvious raise in rates (10% hike in a year where the government says that the economy DEFLATED), we’re getting a whopping seven HD channels.

Five of these are local channels, I could get them for free on an antenna. Technically they are on the “Limited Basic” plan for $19.99 a month, but you need an HD box (which means a DVR) for another $15 a month to actually tune any of these in. Do you think anyone wants to rent a DVR for basic cable? Neither do I.

The other two are on “Digital Starter” which went up to $57 and are ESPN and ESPN-2, which I don’t care about.

The last bit of “good news” is that Comcast is shifting the channels around so that all the channels people want are only on Digital Starter or higher. They did add one channel I want, but I’m not paying another $15 a month for the package that has it.

When my Digital Starter promo fee crap wears out, I’ll probably go to Digital Economy, which means I lose the Sci-Fi channel (only one in Starter that I care about), but pay $30 instead of $57. Thankfully Stargate Universe is on Hulu anyway.

So not only am I going to downgrade my service, there’s yet another year with no real HD programming from Comcast and no reason to buy a nice TV.

I may just get satellite yet...

Who ever said high school algebra was worthless? It is so wonderful seeing mathematics put to good

Who ever said high school algebra was worthless? It is so wonderful seeing mathematics put to good use. Not only did my system call another 3-0 night plus a 1-0 NHL game, it called it with such beauty I cannot describe it.

What I am mainly referring to here, is the Pacers-Raptors game. The spread was set at +5 for the Pacers, but that was too low according to my system. The only number that worked for it was using the Pacers in a 7pt teaser, making the spread +12. And what ended up happening? The Pacers went on to lose by 11 points! Wonderful!

The other beautiful game was the Knicks-Lakers game. The spread had the Lakers as a -13 point favorite. My GF system did not like that, though. But you know what it did like? A -9 point spread. and How much did the Lakers win by? 10! Boo-Yah!

Obviously I know I’m going to lose a few games here and there as no system is perfect. My guess is I will probably get a loss tomorrow as there are 12 NBA games and 14 NHL games. I’m not saying I know I will get a loss tomorrow, I’m just saying the odds would indicate I’m due for one soon. I fully intend on looking at all of them to find the most playable games and hopefully I don’t lose. We’ll see though. With 26 games to analyze, though, I’ve got my work cut out for me.

All-in-all, tonight, I was 4-0 SU, 6-0 ATS (counting both teasers), but only 1-3 O/U. I’m gonna have to work on that last one.

P.S. Not sure if I’m the last guy to find out about this but you can watch NHL games online via Versus. You can also get to it by going to the boxscore of the game on sports.yahoo.com and clicking the “live game” button on the side (when available). That is pretty much awesome.
