A few weeks back, I got to take Aiden to a Pacers game. It was Cub Scout Night and Family Night – so the tickets were cheap and we got some pretty cool stuff, like free t-shirts and hot dogs and drinks. Uncle Kevin came along too for a guys’ night out. This was my third Pacers game and the first one since Thanksgiving, 2002.

Remember a few years ago when Aiden played for the Tar Heels? He’s been a fan of Carolina since then – much to my chagrin. But at least he’s not a Boilermaker or Wildcats fan. He’d have to sleep out in the shed if that were the case.

Anyway, Aiden was super-excited to learn that Pacers rookie, Tyler Hansbrough, was a Tar Heel last year. He was also pretty excited to see how big Psycho T’s hands and feet are compared with his own.

He just had to buy something, so he got a hat and foam finger (with his own money). Looks like he’s starting to gather a collection of foam fingers. I guess there’s worse things…

Then, at the end of the game, we got to walk on the floor and Aiden got to shoot a basket. While it doesn’t have the same aura as Hinkle Fieldhouse, it was still a pretty neat experience.

Oh yeah – and the Pacers beat Boston, which made it all the more sweet. That started the weekend’s sweep of Indy teams against New England teams that weekend. The Colts game was much more dramatic, though.

A grand time was had by all. Hopefully, it won’t be 7 years before I go to another Pacers game.

Wait Here Son. Daddy Needs a Lap Dance – INDIANAPOLIS - Do you remember way back to the days when your old man was young and stupid? You may have been a bouncing lad, or even a Cub Scout, but it didn’t really matter because he made some foolish decisions. Like that one time when he got so drunk he drove the car into the garage with no hands, only the door was down and he smashed mommy’s car to pieces. Or there was that other time when he ran out on the field durig little league game and yelled at you for striking out on a 3-0 count, then he beat the hell out of the ump for getting nosey. Well, that’s nothing. This guy lost his kid and car, but he did get a lap dance and a few drinks before getting busted.

A Indianapolis man was arrested and spent the night in county lockup after he left his 5-year-old son in a semi-truck while he went inside of a stripper club for a few beers and a private lap dance. After a few hours of fun he left but was too hammered to remember where he parked, so called the cops and reported the truck stolen. Afer combing the area the police found the truck, and a 5 year old boy inside drinking beer and watching pornos. The keys were in the ignition, and the doors were unlocked, and there were nudie mags all over the place. (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091124/ap_on_fe_st/us_odd_father_arrested_strip_club)

For his blantant stupidity he was charged with child neglect and public intoxication charges, then his wife beat the hell out of him after bailing him out. He also had to paint the living room, snake the septic tank, and walk up and down the front of the trailer park entrance holding a sign that says “I’m a pervert who left his 5 year old son alone in an 18 wheelers while I went in to a stripper bar for a lap dance with a happy ending.” Nothing like a little trailer park justice for a bad dad with blue balls and a thirst for booze and strippers. Maybe if bought junior a table dance or two there wouldn’t have been any problems, at least not till mommy found out.

Posted: November 25, 2009

I’ll take another round turkey, a heaping pile of mashed potatoes and a mound of stuffing. I’ll go for seconds, maybe thirds, on yams and cranberry. I’ll make room for a slice of pie or three, and then it’s on to dessert and a plate full of Sleepers for Week 12:

QUARTERBACK

Alex Smith (San Francisco) vs. Jacksonville – Projection: 21-35, 220 yards, 2 TD
Smith didn’t look great on Sunday against Green Bay, but still threw for 227 yards and 3 TD. Jacksonville ranks 25th versus the pass, so another solid performance is a high probability.

Vince Young (Tennessee) vs. Arizona – Projection: 13-21, 155 yards, 1 TD, 5-35 rushing
Young is not an exciting fantasy option, but it’s surprising how little it takes to get double-digit fantasy points from the guy. With just 116 passing yards in Week 11, Young was still good for 14 fantasy points thanks to 73 rushing yards and a passing TD.

RUNNING BACK

Justin Forsett (Seattle) @ St. Louis – Projection: 13-71 rushing, 5-31 receiving, 1 TD
Even if Julius Jones returns from his bruised lung, Forsett has more than proven his worth in Seattle, and will get his touches. The Rams are 28th in the league against the run, so this will probably be the last week Forsett qualifies as a “Sleeper”.

Jamaal Charles (Kansas City) @ San Diego – Projection: 14-65 rushing, 3-11 receiving, 1 TD
Against a tough Pittsburgh D, Charles still found a way to be a viable fantasy option by catching a 2-yard touchdown pass from Matt Cassel and returning a kickoff for 6. San Diego is 21st against the run, so Charles could have another solid day.

Danny Ware (New York Giants) @ Denver – Projection: 9-51 rushing, 3-24 receiving
When the Giants travel to Denver for a Thanksgiving night showdown with the Broncos, Ahmad Bradshaw (ankle) will not make the trip. With Brandon Jacobs (leg) a bit hobbled, the door could swing open for the Giants’ number three back.

WIDE RECEIVER

Antonio Bryant (Tampa Bay) @ Atlanta – Projection: 5-67 receiving, 1 TD
Bryant had 1248 yards and 7 TD just one season ago. After battling injuries for much of this year, he’s healthy and could start to build a rapport with Tampa Bay rookie gunslinger, Josh Freeman. It doesn’t hurt that Atlanta is 29th against the pass.

Earl Bennett (Chicago) @ Minnesota – Projection: 7-84 receiving
Over the past 3 weeks, Chicago’s leading ypc receiver (12.8) has a modest 15 grabs for 177 yards. Not exactly a trend that would suggest a big game versus Minnesota, but here we go again, putting up the bucks for a guy who always fails to deliver a TD. This could be the week…

Pierre Garcon (Indianapolis) @ Houston – Projection: 5-72 receiving
Over the past 3 weeks, Garcon is tied with Roddy White for 13th in the NFL in WR targets (28). Over that span, he has 14 catches, 218 yards and 1 TD, including 108 yards last week. By the way, he has Peyton Manning throwing him the ball.

TIGHT END

Jermichael Finley (Green Bay) @ Detroit – Projection: 4-39 receiving, 1 TD
How can I not go with Finley (again)? He’s owned in less than 20% of fantasy leagues, yet, per game, is outperforming Jason Witten, Jeremy Shockey and John Carlson, all of whom are owned in more than 75% of leagues! Plus, here comes Detroit.

KICKER

Dan Carpenter (Miami) @ Buffalo – Projection: 2 FG, 2 PAT (1 FG 40+)
It’s time to see if Carpenter can be a cold weather kicker. Safe bet, the Montana alum will be fine, and the Dolphins will get him into range at least twice against the Bills. Carpenter has scored 74 (real life) points thus far in 2009, and has a big leg.

DEFENSE

Atlanta Falcons vs. Tampa Bay – Projection: 17 points allowed, 2 sacks, 1 Int, 1 fumble recovery
The Buccaneers have shown flashes of ability on offense, and there could be some again on Sunday. That said, Atlanta is averaging 2 sacks and nearly 2 takeaways per game, and Tampa will really be no match at home.

This NFL season there has been a lot of hype about the final two “unbeaten” teams. And while it would be Super to have two undefeated teams duking it out in the last game of the season, the probability of this happening is 0.00152% with 8 total games remaining for both. I’m all for improbable things happening but those are odds that no one with any sense of gambling knowledge would ever take. But who knows, if Drew Brees keeps playing the way he is and Peyton keeps miraculously coming up with the W, the odds in reality seem a little better. It would be an unforgettable matchup.

As a fan of the Colts, is it really in the best interest of my team to go undefeated this season? I’m not wishing the Colts to lose, trust me I love a win no matter how late in the game it takes to secure it. But I’m more concerned about the most important win of the season, which for undefeated teams has unfortunately rarely happened. Only one team in the modern NFL era, the 1972 Dolphins, have gone undefeated in the regular season and taken home the hardware. The Patriots attempted it in 2007 only to lose to the other Manning brother (poor Brady, he must have nightmares about the Oreo dunking duo). In the Pre-modern Era, the 1935 and 1942 Bears, as well as the 1948 Browns were undefeated in the regular season but only the Browns came away as champs. These aren’t the kind of odds that I’m looking for this season. I want another win in Miami for my team. I’ll take the odds that have been shown by one loss or two loss teams. The pressure is less after one loss; the focus is not on the chase of the goose egg at the end of the record and more on the “bling” on the finger.

Don’t get me wrong, these statistics aren’t going to stop me from cheering my team to victory every week. I just hope the guys are focusing their energy on improving our tackling and catching abilities more than all of the hoopla of the “Perfect Season” so we can display another Lombardi trophy in Indy. A win in Miami is what we want; bring home the hardware Colts!

Speedway Jr. High School was filled with nervous and excited chatter on Tuesday morning as students were expecting a special guest. Kathy Owen the P.E. teacher and advisor for the Fuel Up to Play 60 program planned the event making this opportunity possible for fifty lucky students to meet a young athlete making a name for himself in the NFL. Joseph Addai, a running back for the Indianapolis Colts in his fourth season, referred to his body as a fancy car he wants to fuel up with gas (nutrient rich foods), an analogy used to paint a picture of the importance of good nutrition as a part of fueling up with energy.

Before Addai was introduced, the atmosphere was set by a skit acted out by Ball State dietetic interns to show how important breakfast is for the beginning of the day. The scene began in a first period gym class. One intern played an energetic, hyper student while the other played a tired, lagging student who forgot to have breakfast. The two were chatting while exercising and sharing ideas for breakfast on the go. When the skit was over the interns interacted with the students by asking for ideas and feedback on what he or she does at home when pressed for time. The presentation was finished off by showing display boards with more simple breakfast ideas, such as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or pizza and milk.

Next, Colts Cheerleaders spoke to the students on the importance of eating healthy and portion control. The cheerleaders shared their eating habits and how exercise everyday can help an individual stay fit and lead a healthy lifestyle. They emphasized the importance of eating fruits and vegetables, drinking lots of milk, and eating whole grains as part of a well-balanced diet.

As Addai was introduced the excitement of the students erupted which created an exciting energy in the room. Students were able to ask Addai an array of questions from his favorite play to how being a role model has affected his life. Addai’s take home message led back to his ability to keep a healthy lifestyle by staying active all year round and keeping his body fueled up with the right nutrition, especially when starting his day. The event ended with a celebratory lunch and autograph session allowing students to meet Addai one on one.

To start off, let me remove my foot from my mouth so I can talk about the Colts-Ravens game. The gam

To start off, let me remove my foot from my mouth so I can talk about the Colts-Ravens game. The game was far too close for us Colts fans. Apparently, the sports gurus that set the betting lines do in fact know more about football than I do. I concede that point freely, as Baltimore’s performance on Sunday clearly shows that they were worthy of being favored by 1 point (which is within the 2 point advantage generally given to the home team). They played very well picking off two errant throws by Manning. However, as the Ravens put field goals on the board, the Colts were scoring touchdowns which eventually led to a narrow victory for the Colts.

A few high points for the game include an amazing catch by Dallas Clark, an ankle breaking move by Joseph Addai to get into the endzone, and a gritty toughness exhibited by second year receiver Pierre Garcon. Oh yeah… if you haven’t noticed, Indy has a defense this year. Yes, they still play that cover two, bend but don’t break defense, but it works for them. When you have Peyton Manning behind center, you can generally withstand a few field goals scored by the other team. This defense allows the Colts to nearly eliminate big plays by the other teams and then capitalize on mistakes. The Colts’ defense did exactly that, limiting the Ravens to field Goals the entire game and holding their deep threat in check. The only deep play was a superhuman effort by Derrick Mason to pull in a ball that Jerraud Powers had in his grasp. Give credit where it’s due. Powers has that interception if Mason doesn’t not make a move that would’ve drawn an automatic whistle in basketball as an “over-the-back” call.

I credit the Ravens for playing far better than I had expected. They pounded the Indy defense all day, but simply could not overcome them in the red zone. Baltimore may still have a shot at the playoffs. They have two crucial games against the Steelers left on their schedule. If they can capitalize on a Steelers team that has been hard hit by injuries, they could take at least one of those games and make a case for the playoffs.

As for the Colts, they may have a tough game coming up against the Houston Texans. Coming off a bitter loss to the Titans, the Texans are not a bad team. Vince Young was able to make plays on the Texans defense that Houston will not see against Indy. I love watching Peyton Manning and I firmly believe he is the best quarterback in the NFL, but he is not a threat to run when under pressure in the pocket. I’ll lok at that game as it approaches, but next on the docket will be a look at the Turkey Day games, which I think are surprisingly watchable, even if the Lions and Raiders are playing.

…gate A13 to be exact, where I am currently situated for the next hour until my flight for Cincinnati begins to board. Then after an hour of layover there, I’ll be on my way to San Fran. What up yayureaaaa.

It’s kind of a gross musty day. The sky is all one gross shade of light grey, and amazingly, this airport is basically empty. I got here a bit earlier than I should have thinking I’d have to wait longer to get through security, but there were 3 people going through security when I did. No joke. It’s eerily empty.

I don’t know how I feel about going home. Back in September, I had to beg my parents to fly me home. They thought the ticket was too expensive, and wanted me to stay on campus haha, but I couldn’t imagine sticking around the empty campus. And now that I am actually flying home, I can’t imagine going home. Whaaat? I’ve been in college for three months?!

What is “home” exactly? My roommate Allie and I used to correct people when they referred to dorm rooms as “home” because clearly, that’s not home! But now that I think about it, it really is. Bloomington Indiana has stolen my heart away with its beautiful campus and wonderful people and I can’t imagine being anywhere else. It’s being able to walk down the hall of my dorm and just to say hello, to stroll across the perfect sized campus with The Beatles music blasting in my ears, and the ability to walk past the bagel stand and know at least one familiar face. Life makes me giddy.

Being over 2000 miles away from home hasn’t helped either. My roommate has gone home at least 5 times just for weekends (She lives in South Bend, 4 hours north) and most of my friends are just driving home for break whenever they feel like it. I can’t imagine what it’ll be like walking into my house for the first time in 3 months, but from what I’ve heard, showing without shoes on will be an experience like no other! This post is going all over the place. Mind you, I’m just spitting my thoughts out.

HAHA some asian guy sitting on the terminal bench next to me is taking pictures of the airplanes through the window. Hehe.

I’m really nervous. Can’t put my finger on why though. The baby white mocha I got with my meal points this morning probably doesn’t help either.

Alright imma peace now. I should really blog more often. I wrote one a couple of weeks ago but its still saved in my drafts folder. I was never really satisfied with it to publish it. Maybe I’ll polish it and put it up over break. Maybe.

Hakuna Matata.

I feel short.

Although many might not know his name now, it may change as Wu-Tang affiliate and Midwest native M-Eighty looks to break the Guinness Book of World Records by giving the longest freestyle.

The record clocks at freestyle lasting 8 hours and 45 minutes and was set by underground Canadian rapper known as D.O. Holding the record for years, the only other challenger came from the likes of MC Supernatural.

Although no date has been set as of yet, the challenge will take place in Indianapolis and all fans will be able to serve as spectators for this momentous occasion.

“I don’t think it was ever a question of whether I could freestyle for x amount of time; I believe you can do anything you set your mind to,” M-Eighty said in a statement.

“I chose to take on this obstacle because at the end of the day I am providing a great service to others and doing something life altering for an entire community in the name of education.”

The event represents two different purposes for the rapper. Aside from having his name etched in the Guinness book, he also looks to raise funds to be utilized in construction for a secondary school in Africa. The journey has partnered him with the International Studies Program at Indiana University/Purdue University-Indianapolis and the Timmy Foundation whom are aiming to raise $30,000.

Eight’s history as a rapper show the album started with the release of his debut album The Expert Explosive in 2002 which was then followed by 2003’s Snakes in the Garden of Eighty and 2004’s The 11th hour.

He has performed with the likes of Killah Priest, Busta Rhymes, Kanye West, dead prez, Lil Flip, Twista and more.

Outside of the upcoming Guinness attempt, the rapper is expected to appear at a show with Raekwon at The Bluebird in Bloomington, Indiana on December 8 and at the IUPUI Student Center on December 19.

Brittany Peterson, a dietetic intern from Ball State University, is fulfilling her last community rotation at the Dairy and Nutrition Council of Indiana. She received her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Dietetics from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. Please follow Brittany as she spends her time with DNCI touring Smith Dairy in Richmond, Indiana.

Britany & Camila, two dietetic interns with DNCI, preparing to tour Smith Dairy in Richmond, Indiana.

The last five months of my life have been spent in an internship, working toward my dream of becoming a registered dietitian. I have worked with migrant children from Texas and Mexico through a Head Start program, food service workers in a hospital kitchen, and in my previous rotation I spent time in clinical dietetics finding ways to improve lives through the nutrition of hospital patients. Now, I am at the Dairy and Nutrition Council of Indiana where on my first day, Monday, November 16, 2009, I was in an oversized lab coat and a hair net that resembled a cupcake top, touring Smith Dairy in Richmond, Indiana.

Smith Dairy is a family owned and operated company that has been running out of Orville, Ohio, since the day Peter and John Schmid (sons of an immigrant family from Switzerland) borrowed $300 from a neighbor to buy a dairy on January 1, 1909. So, why is it that the Schmids named their dairy “Smith Dairy?” Well, it is as simple as Smith is just easier to pronounce. In the beginning, John and Peter only owned two horses to take them on their daily delivery route in which they delivered up to 60 gallons of milk each day.

As the years went by, Smith Dairy prospered. It continued to work out of Orville, Ohio, as well as buying Wayne Dairy in Richmond, Indiana, in 1996. Fresh milk is brought into this facility seven days a week to be pasteurized, packaged, labeled, boxed, bundled, and shipped to their respective locations. From the trucks, milk is put into a pasteurization container for either HTST (High Temperature Short Time) or UHT (Ultra High Temperature) pasteurization. In HTST pasteurization, milk is heated to 171°F for fifteen seconds. This process is quick, but not as quick as UHT which sterilizes milk after only two seconds of being heated to temperatures of at least 275°F. Doing so extends milk’s shelf life up to six months.

Today, Smith Dairy is running 100 years strong and prospering largely due to their commitment of creating a product unsurpassed by time and leading the field with new ideas. For example, they developed the yellow Super jug used to block light rays from damaging milk’s nine essential nutrients. Every great company has a strong base, a mission statement that helps keep everyone focused. Smith Dairy’s mission statement is based on a three-legged milk stool, the foundation (the milk seat) holds together the customers (leg one), the associates (leg two) and the owners (leg three); all working together to bring dairy products Americans enjoy to our grocery stores, schools, restaurants, and homes.
