In my first post I said art snob solutions once, well actually it’s a song sang by of Montreal my favorite band.
The song is dedicated to sort of art snob people you know what i mean.
If you see the lyrics you’ll know it by yourself.

Art Snob Solutions

What’s up, directors? Grab your knives!
It’s time to take all all of the lives
Of the people who cannot see
The somnolent genius of Tarkovsky

Come on authors, grab your guns!
It’s time to murder everyone
Who has never heard of Apollinaire
Send them all to hell, it’s only fair

Cast them all into the flames
If they don’t know any names
Of the principles of Arte Povera
Or are unfamiliar with le serpent mascara
That’s right, mascara snake!

Come on painters, alive or dead!
Give all the cretins a boot to the head
If they don’t extoll convincingly
Tempered Elan era Kandinsky

Throw them all into a well
If they cannot tell
An Arto Parv feast of repetition
From a Schoenberg 12 tone composition

Come on artists, the day is here!
And your mission is very clear
Put an end to the bourgeoisie
And death to everyone who’s never heard of me

This is of Montreal live show you can watch:

The live show video ain’t that clear so i give you a clearer sound, enjoy:

or you can just simply download it here

Okay I’ll tell you something…

Tarkovsky - Tarkovsky (Andrei) is a Russian directors, but a lot of people said that its not him, its Tchaikovsky (Pyotr Ilyich) the Russian composer. I’m kindda silly little snobby and I’ll say its Tarkovsky, hence the ‘whats up director’s grab your knifes’ verse. why would of montreal put a composer in a verse about directors?

Apollinaire – Guillaume Apollinaire was a famous French writer.

Arte Povera – It was a term created by an art critic named Germano Celant. It delt with examining 14 key artists whose goals were to come up with a whole new trend of art.

Le Serpent Mascara (Mascara Snake) - I’m pretty sure “le serpent mascara” is just a jest at the way arty types like to say things in French when there is a perfectly accurate equivalent term in English. I assume that line which follows: “that’s right, mascara snake!”. This is an obvious reference, copied VERBATIM, to Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band member The Mascara Snake (Vliet’s cousin from the Trout Mask Replica band).

Tempered Elan era Kandinsky – Kandinsky was a painter, and tempered elan is his masterpiece, here is the pict:

Arto Parv – Typical snob, they think they know it all (just like me). It’s a clear sarcasm. There’s no Arto Parv. Ok who wants to feel like a total pretentious bitch? I do! I believe that what Of Montreal was trying to say instead of Arto Parv was Arvo Part, a most excellent Estonian composer.

Feast of Repetition - I really don’t know what “a feast of repetition” was referring to, but it made me think of one of his pieces, Fur Elana, which repeats the same minimalist composition 3 times in different octaves. Quite a breathtaking piece if you ever get a chance to listen to it. Again I’m being so snob.

Schoenberg 12 Tone Composition – From what I remember from music theory, 12-tone is a musical practice in which one cannot repeat one of any of the 12 chromatic tones until all 12 have been played. The effect is generally completely horrible. Das Mondschein is a classic example. My snobby instinct said it refers to the horrors of the first world war? But, I’m no expert! haha.

Bourgeoisie - It’s a term for middle-up class in French.

Don’t you all get that it’s not some pissing contest of big brains to track down every obscure reference in the song? I’ll say it simply: it’s supposed to be funny. it’s making fun of you. that’s right, all of you (or maybe me) who shouted out “I KNEW IT! I KNEW APOLLINAIRE AND KANDINSKY! I KNEW IT FIRST!” like a bunch of five year old trying to snatch the last cookie were just displaying the exact annoying-as-hell behavior of art snobs that’s being satire.

Maybe ever think that accusing those who are uninformed about your interests as being blundering idiots who can’t tie their shoes just makes them hate you, not respect you? ever think there’s maybe a better way to inform the public without that nose jerking into the air, a smirk on your face, and that tiny inner voice saying “oh god, i am so much better than them”?

Maybe actually listen to the song. Stop trying to use obscure references to validate your own intelligence (honestly I’m still trying too).

It’s music. Listen to it, enjoy it.

The song is telling about Art Snob’s attitudes (which is I apparently have). Here is an example of an Art Snob attitude: You are a huge Beatles fan. You’re in love with them. So you’re talking to someone about the Beatles. And they say, “I’ve never heard of the Beatles. Are they good?” What would you’re reaction be? You would probably be shocked, flabbergasted, and maybe, you might warp it into a personal insult.

This is how Art Snobs feel about people who aren’t either fellow Art Snobs, Artists, Musicians, Art History Buffs, Art Collecters, and et cetera. so this is what this song is about. Everyone, grab your knives, we’re gonna kill all the people who don’t know anything about art!

Peace Out!

It has been over a year since I’ve been let loose on the radio to play incessant indiepop and gabba. And I’ve really missed it.

But hold on! It’s ok! Come the new year there’ll be more radio shenanigans! Sunday evenings on Bristol University’s student radio will play host to myself and Paul, who’s well versed in this whole radio jazz, having presented an excellent show in Manchester for several years.

I daren’t try and replicate the joys of Transmission (I fear the sexual tension between myself and Alex may never break the airwaves again!), so it’ll be something slightly new. Though rest assured, indie pop will feature heavily, as well lots of country and shouty Scottish indie-rock.

More details as and when I get them.

Poco so – sappiamo?

11/10/09

Fran & Andy (of Travis) @ Joes Pub

a. Fran Healy & Andy Dunlop rock!

2. Travis music is really really awesome! I sometimes forget how much I really like their music. I’ll dismiss it for a little while but whenever i come back it fits like an old glove and makes me happy.

C. 12 Memories of Urban Bohemia might be the best album title ever (thanks Dandy Warhols – 13 Tales from Urban Bohemia is my favorite album ever, sorry Travis).

4. Andy is awesome! When I met him he immediately said “We’ve met before”. And he was convinced we had met, Im pretty sure we hadnt. Like he said, maybe in a past life and then he said something about a snail. Must be a Scottish thing – Im still perplexed.

d. Fran is really charming. Did I just say charming – I need to add REALLY CHARMING. He gave me a big hug upon leaving and then a huge kiss on the cheek. I think I floated out the door.

E. Fran telling me about the drunken assholes in the very front. It was just random conversation which led to him telling me how obnoxious they were. I had already wanted to throw my beer at them, but Im sad to hear they fucked up his set by singing so loudly and just being pure obnoxious.

2 dudes (if you ever read this) its fucking Fran and Andy’s show, not yours. Youre at Joe’s Pub not some huge club where he cant hear you. He can hear every single f’ing thing now be polite or get the hell out!
(sorry for my rant)

7. Me telling Fran I drank his glass of wine. yes its true- he had a glass of wine on the stage for him. And he left without ever taking a sip. Upon asking their roadie/tech guy for his setlist he also asked if I’d like Fran’s wine. Of course I said yes. And the wine was delicious; and more importantly Fran told me he was glad I drank it.

X. Fran warning Sally and I he might spit into our food. Our table was so close (thats an understatement) to him it was a bit unreal. Maybe he should have spit into my cake, it was way too dry and could have used something to make it more moist

9. Andy disappearing between songs and Fran panicking about what happened to him. This is just so not the stuff that happens at shows. Andy was in the loo and yes he was ok

Y. Sally (my new friend thanks to Craigslist) is awesome. Aside for buying my dinner as a thank you and for scoring the best table ever, is also super cool. She showed me her picture of her and Ovie and I nearly died. Wait! A hockey fan and Travis fan. For real. She was also at the Manics – Sally scored major bonus points!

Z. Walking home at 2am in Hells Kitchen was surreal The streets were beyond empty and it was eerie and I started wondering if I was in a Zombie movie. I was picturing something like 28 Days later and picturing how they were all going to appear and they werent slow zombies they were fast. Needless to say I was f-ed and got the hell home fast

and finally #12. The best memory ever was that this was easily my favorite show of this year and probably would rank easily in my top 10.

The slideshow, the pictures, the maps and the picture of his adorable boy really made them human. They were real people at that moment and not these huge rockstars. And it told the story of the music of Travis and how so much of it came about. And I just love the stories of him going to the cinema as a kid with his granddad and seeing Bad Lieutenant. Some things Ill just never forget.

And Im so making a sign next time they come here saying ‘S(w)ing’. It’d be awesome. And a few people would totally understand where it came from.

Indietracks feels like Isambard Kingdom Brunel putting on All Tomorrow’s Parties, where the only downside is choosing between the gorgeous music and the unlimited steam train rides.

Virtual Festivals, July 2009

Now in its third year, Indietracks has sprung up from very modest beginnings to be one of the UK’s most endearing and eccentric festivals. Taking place at Midland Valley Railway Centre in Riply, Derbyshire, the event is a labour of love for founder Stuart Mackay, who combined two of his passions: restoring steam trains and indie pop, to create one wholly unique event. Indietracks isn’t just a great excuse to discover some great new music, it’s an opportunity to support the earnest restoration of our heritage: the festival acts as a money raiser for the museum, with everyone involved in the weekend volunteering their time for free.

The line-up represents the very best of the indiepop underground, many of whom would be lucky to even to grace the smallest of stages at ATP. Bands come from as far afield as Japan, Italy, Sweden, USA and Argentina; DJs from Berlin, Barcelona and Hong Kong. With Spain’s seminal indiepop label Elefant curating the main stage, there’s also a great selection of Spanish acts including Cola Jet Set, La Casa Azul and Cooper. For a festival that could fit comfortably inside Glastonbury’s Shangri La field, it certainly knows how to punch above its weight.

Familiar labels, fanzines and club nights – such as Fortuna Pop, Twee as Fuck and Lipstick on Your Collar – feature throughout the weekend, either DJing, running workshops or generally getting accosted by indiepop enthusiasts screaming, “oh my God, you’re from Talulah Gosh!”

Part of the charm of Indietracks is the ability to actually explore the heritage around the site. From having a drink at the bar in an old buffet car, to standing right next to one of the massively-intimidating locomotives, to the free and unlimited steam train rides – some of which actually feature gigs by some of the acts – it’s hard to walk around without feeling a sense of satisfaction that you’ve discovered something very special.

Tickets for the festival are priced at a very reasonable £55, but there’s a catch – it doesn’t include camping. For this you have to book separately at the nearby Golden Valley Campsite (£20 each per night for two people, a car and one pitch) or further afield. Although the campsite itself is beautiful, clean and very close – only a ten minute walk up a nice, leafy lane to the site – if the festival organisers could make a deal to include camping in the ticket price Indietracks would be almost perfect.

Getting there and back

For a festival built around trains it’s a shame you can’t rail it all the way – but then you can blame Richard Beeching’s desolation of the network in the 1960s for that. The nearest railway stations to the Midland Railway are Derby, Nottingham or Alfreton, with regular buses to the site Monday to Saturday (the Nottingham route drops off at the nearby town of Ripley; from there it’s a short taxi ride). The H1 service from Alfreton takes you direct to the Golden Valley Campsite.

Gas-guzzlers have it easy – Ripley is minutes from the M1 and A38. Parking is free and Indietracks have a Freewheelers Page (linked from the Indietracks website) where you can arrange a car share.

Site

Tiny and intimate, the site centres around Stanwick Junction on the Midland Valley line. As well as the main stage – which only this year has been upgraded from a lorry trailer – there’s an indoor stage in an old railway shed and a lovingly restored church, hosting some of the more intimate gigs (a fourth venue, hosting DJs, is housed at the Golden Valley campsite). A narrow gauge railway runs right through the site – manned by two of the friendliest railway workers you’ll ever have the pleasure to meet – while you can jump on one of the regular steam train rides from Stanwick Junction itself. You can also explore the locomotives and old mail trains in the gargantuous exhibition hall and marvel at the restored diesel trains that litter the tracks around the site. A bar in the shed offers a ridiculous array of real ale, but food wise there’s only a small-but-tasty curry stall and a café, which serves the kind of food that would make Hilda Ogden proud, but hardly the health-conscious.

Atmosphere

A festival on train tracks full of twee poppers is a sure-fire bet to bring ridiculous grins to the most cynical of people. The atmosphere is happy and easy-going rather than the frantic craziness of, say Bestival. The low capacity means that the vibe takes a little time to pick up each day, with the main stage crowd dispersing in-between bands in favour of the workshops and other stages – an idea would be to draft in some of the great DJs on site to fill the void. However, by dusk – and especially in the late discos in the Shed – the atmosphere becomes excitingly electric.

Music

Au Revoir Simone – 7/10

Headlining Friday’s Elefant stage Annie Hart, Erika Forster and Heather D’Angelosway are a perfect opener to the weekend, delivering their purring gothic synth-pop from behind individual keyboards with dreamy abandon. Still seemingly lacking from onstage confidence, their presence is limited to softly-softly swaying to the ethereal harmonies. But while the shyness is often captivating they’re still crying out for something else – if only they’d do something like twirl around the stage like Alice In Wonderland every now and then, it would compliment the gothic tales they’re so good at relaying.

Teenage Fanclub – 8/10

The Fannies have still got it. Headlining on Sunday, the rustled post-punk guitars and absorbing, swirling harmonies still sound as relevant as when ‘Bandwagonesque’ hit the shops in 1991 with its Big Star-inspired greatness. New songs, like the country-tinged ‘Baby Lee’, are delicious but classic Fanclub-jangly and they close with a swooning ‘Neil Jung’.

La Casa Azul – 9/10

You’d never think a guy dressed as the Stig from Top Gear would make so many people gush and dance with happiness, but Spain’s La Casa Azul absolutely storm the place on Saturday night. Combining the anthemic disco of Abba with kind of rich production that made the Beach Boys so tantalising, La Casa Azul feature five members but only one of them – the deliciously named Milkyway – ever appears live. The backdrop becomes a massive video console for entire set, sometimes displaying the AWOL members of the band singing and playing, sometimes featuring Space Invaders pixels dancing along to the fresh, addictive choruses. La Casa Azul are like a wild and tropic mix of the Go! Team, Pizzicato 5 and the Scissor Sisters and their joyous, skyscraping cover of ‘Love Is In The Air’ is the absolute highlight of the weekend.

MJ Hibbett – 9/10

MJ Hibbett is an Indietracks favourite and he proved his worth this year by piling a hundred people into a moving steam train carriage and singing songs about how his boss used to be in an indie band. Hibbert is like Billy Bragg with a smile and a belly full of real ale. His tales are endearing, rich and funny, his delivery perfectly-timed. At one point he recounts the panic of fellow passengers faced with a group of revellers on the way to Gay Pride on ‘the Gay Train’. Later in the evening Eddie Argos pays his own respect by repeatedly shouting “MJ Hibbett … Top of the Pops!” during Art Brut’s set. It’s worth fighting for the return of TOTP just to make that happen.

Little My – 7/10

They sound like an explosion in a primary school music cupboard. They look fresh from the pages of ‘Where The Wild Things Are’. They feel like watching ‘The Flumps’ inside a tambourine. Little My are a mess of indie kids from Cardiff and tonight they pull grins around your silly face faster than you can say Fisher Price Orchestra. Dressed in bear suits and animal ears and playing the most charming twee pop their only musical benchmark is surely ‘Alberto Frog and His Amazing Animal Band’ from seminal 80s kids show ‘Bod’.

Art Brut – 8/10

Far from tiring of all the sweet indiepop, by Sunday evening you just need a little wry sarcasm; a little showmanship; a little post-Fall battle of your senses maybe; a little Eddie Argos. As ever, Eddie doesn’t disappoint, leaning ever closer into the people, marvellously spitting those blunt, loser tales out and over the Shed audience. Behind him the rest of the Brut stylishly grind away at the scrappy, scratchy anthems, as much a match for the eyes of the crowd as Argos’s intoxicating endeavours.

Uppers

All Aboard!

Trains! Everywhere you look there are steam trains, diesel trains, old rustic rolling stock, even a demonstration signal box where you can watch the main stage from – have you ever watched Camera Obscura from a signal box? You can even ride right past the main stage on a little narrow gauge train, while the super-friendly Midland Railway staff wave you on.

All Online!

The Indietracks website and blog – probably one of the best festival websites out there. It not only gives excellent information on the location, directions and band timings, the blog features interviews with most of the bands and workshop organisers, plus plenty of MySpace links so you can research the line-up and pick your must-sees before you get there. There’s even a train timetable so you can plan your train rides in advance.

Downers

The ying and yang of the Golden Valley Campsite

The campsite itself is beautiful and well looked after, offering a café, bar, refreshing showers, electric points and some friendly staff. But there seemed an underlying crabbiness aimed at the people attending the festival – from the initial phone call to make the booking to the ludicrous decision to charge £5 to get in to the disco marquee each night. As a result DJs that had come all the way from Berlin were faced with less than a dozen people on Friday night. By Sunday the campsite had seen sense, offering free entry which accommodated an incredible final night party, but treating people – who are already paying money to camp and drink at the bar – like this is disgusting.

Random Events

The campsite revolution on Saturday night when a load of Indiepoppers barged into the marquee when the security dropped their guard for a second. Twee as fuck indeed!

Nickan Jonasson

2 days to go! I checked with the venue and they remember who we are, which is encouraging.

We seem to have had a decent amount of interest in Saturday – very excited! Ours is only a small venue – 60 capacity – so I advise arriving relatively early to avoid disappointment and self-hatred.

The vague plan of the night is

8pm – we ‘open’, so hopefully one of us will have turned up by this stage
8-9 My friend Alastair DJs for the first time ever. His music collection contains everything from Iron Maiden to Tatu, via Kate Bush and Belle & Sebastian, so God knows what he’s going to end up playing.
9-9:30 – 1977 happens
9:30 – 10pm: 1979 happens (Thatcher, boo)
10pm – 10:30: 1987 happens
10:30 – close: We take turns to play whatever we like. What this may entail is impossible to predict, without mastering a hideously complex mathematical formula that factors in net drunknness, glee, and fear.

p.s. There will be cake.

Qualcuno me li spiega?

NO, porque no so

“Suffragette, Suffragette”

I went to a shadowy location to pick up our flyers. I told the concierge my name and he gave me a brown envelope stuffed with goodness. There’s the flyers themselves, obviously:

So, tomorrow: people that aren’t cunts, I hope you’re looking forward to getting your sweaty hands on our flyers. We’re going to distribute them at How Does It Feel To Be Loved (occasionally populated by cunts), and some pubs and record shops in the Farringdon and Islington areas (cunts not unheard of).
