Atmosphere Aplenty

I work in the East End, and all around me, pubs are dying. That means that these days I have to venture ever further to have my once a week post work pint. So today I walked for 30 minutes before finding it. I ended up at ‘INDO‘, and I don’t think I’ll ever leave. The punters might be a bit different, the music might be on the rubbish side of ‘ecclectic’, but the beers are heavenly, it’s quiet on an weekday night and it’s better than everything else around.

Praise indeed.

I am hoping the courier can manage to deliver them by Monday. It will be a great delight to see the book in print at last.

Ticket seekers are every where. From seeking ticket to contest elections to expecting free tickets to a cricket match to wanting a ticket to attend dinner parties. There is no end to this ticket seeking crowd. Some of the VVIPs got abused in this game for tickets. Who can forget Amar Singh waiting endlessly for the dinner ticket of UPA I inauguration. In the latest episode of ticket seeking crowd, a huge Indians and Americans are gatecrashing White House for the dinner invitation cum entry for the banquet hosted by Barack Obama in honour of Dr. Manmohan Singh.

It’s not tickets for the hoop game involving Washington Wizards or for the Jersey Boys performing live in the capital region; it’s not for the Beaujolais Nouveau celebration at the Embassy of France or Vinifera Bistro’s Eastern Mediterranean world tour dinner. The hottest ticket in town is an invitation to the banquet President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are having next week for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife Gursharan at the White House – the first State visit Obamas are hosting since moving into 1600, Pennsylvania Avenue.

It’s an invitation everyone covets but no one has seen. Word is that the White House is telling invitees to keep it close to their chest because of the clamour and lobbying that will inevitably break out – especially in the desi crowd – once the word gets out of the honours scroll. In fact, so closely-guarded and tightly scripted is the event that there isn’t even a whisper of the guest list or menu or entertainment for the evening – all of which will provide some reading of the tea leaves about how Obama intends to treat New Delhi at a very uncertain time in US-India ties.

This much is known: Prime Minister Singh will arrive on Sunday, November 22, and will NOT check into Blair House — located right across from the White House — which is the official state guest house used to check in most foreign dignitaries on state visits. Instead, the Prime Minister and his entourage will check into Willard Hotel, a block east of the White House, which is famous for having originated the term “lobbying.” Local folklore (often challenged) has it that President Ulysses Grant often repaired here to relax and smoke a cigar in the lobby where favour-seekers would approach him, hence the term lobbying.

After a night’s rest (more likely than getting lobbied), the Prime Minister will address the US-India Business Council on Monday morning and engage policy wonks at the Council for Foreign Relations later in the day. The next day, November 24, is when he will be formally feted on the White House lawns with the band-baja, pomp and ceremony, that he has already seen once as a guest of the Bush White House – which will make Singh arguably the only world leader who has been a “state guest” of two successive US presidents of two political parties.

Strictly speaking though, Singh’s is not a “state visit” since such visits involves the Head of State (in India’s case Pratibha Patil) whereas in India’s parliamentary system the Prime Minister is the head of government. But since India’s presidential post is largely ceremonial and titular, Washington, keen to mollify New Delhi with grand gestures in the absence of any substantial developments building on the nuclear deal, has gotten around the protocol issue by terming this an “official state visit.”

Tuesday evening is when the Obamas will host the formal black tie dinner in the White House when the Americans will be largely tuxedoed (men) and be-gowned (women); the Indian sartorial equivalent, it was decided during the Clinton-Vajpayee banquet, will be the bandh-gala (men) and sarees (women). There will be brief speeches, toasts, fine food and entertainment – all of which has been kept under wraps.

The Prime Minister will receive various cabinet principals (Hillary Clinton, Robert Gates etc) at the Willard on Wednesday before attending a reception for the Indian community in the US hosted by Ambassador Meera Shankar in the evening. He will leave Washington DC on Thursday morning, which is Thanksgiving holiday in US, for Port of Spain, Trinidad, to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government summit.

Java to Sulawesi: The Trials with Ventilation on a Pelni Ferry

In Indonesia’s four walls of budget entrapment, I faced many problems. The most notable of these was due to the fact that I rarely encountered a shower in my bathroom. Instead, I was blessed with mandis – which are essentially sinks that look more like mini-wells, and come equipped with a scoop. And water that would make Eskimos’ hairs stand on end. As a consequence, I became embroiled in a daily showdown of psychological warfare between myself and the scoop of ice-cold water in my hand. Showering out of a bucket, living out of a bag.

However, I also feel like I’m building up a good understanding with the cockroaches with whom I share my rooms: I see them I squash them, they see me they run.

As wonderfully diverse a country as Indonesia is, its ferries are a different prospect. A day or two on one of these almost feels like you’re living in one, glorious ambiguity: travelling rough on an ocean of wonderment.

I’m not sure how long we waited – 1, maybe 2 hours – crunched together in the sauna of body heat, as claustrophobic as can be, awaiting the moment to board. We were like forlorn cattle hoping to be let loose. Our ticket said 6pm. Theirs said 10pm. Looks like we’re gonna be here for some time to come..

From the outside, it seemed like quite the vessel. Not exactly the Titanic in terms of size, but not far off. Any such similarities ceased from the moment we stepped inside. Three Westerners, and about 10,000 Indonesians, on a ferry packed to the rafters – to the extent where it is the norm for the ships to be well, well over-subscribed. People sleep on the floor, inside and out. And they take whatever ‘beds’ are on offer. All that effort to get near the front of the queue, and beds were scarcely available.

Economy class, aka, The Land of One Thousand Wooden Beds. Of course, being economical is a prerequisite of long-term travel – but seriously, a plank of wood?! What a labour, not to mention a sore bum.

Everywhere you walk the air is laden with the smell of those ubiquitous clove cigarettes. I think I mentioned there were no windows. Choke. Coupled with that, there are endless people coming up and offering you anything from toy fighter-jets to Nasi Goreng, and then – I had closed my eyes for barely a second – a man was looming over me waving a dirty magazine in my face. Well, I didn’t buy anything, but I respect his business technique.

One of the guys on our plank/dorm had a wooden box with him; not unusual, because most have cargo. When he opened it up for me, though, I realised that I was going to be sleeping next to some lizards. That, and the man that lay opposite had the most attractive of habits, in that he frequently splurged up spit and snot on the floor – right next to his toothbrush. Sweet dreams indeed.

Many passengers were on the way to West Papua, and so had to live through it for up to five days. Again, Indonesia has a knack of making one’s problems seem small.

During the trip I got a bit of fish-bone stuck at the back of my throat. The medical facilities on offer weren’t the best.

One of the down-sides of Ramadan: ‘The doctor can’t see you for an hour – he’s busy praying.’ As the toilets on our deck had a highly-rated ’suffocatibility’ attached to them, I had to wait awhile.

When I did eventually find the medical deck, I had to knock on a door for about 10 minutes until a figure emerged, in his underpants, from the darkness.

‘I need to see a doctor, if possible.’

Speaking in a gruffly discontent voice, he said: ‘I am not a doctor….I am a nurse.’

‘I guess I’ll just eat some rice and hope for the best.’

The final hour of the 28-hour journey was quite the endurance test. Having been sweating buckets for hours, we decided to head down to the exit, in an attempt to leave first. As a consequence, we ended up standing among the many blinding lamps that were replete with hundreds of bulbous flies. And yet more Indonesians looking and laughing our way. Moments before they finally opened the doors, all passengers were shoved either side the gangway, presumably to make space for the people in First Class. Not so. Literally, as the doors flew open, sixty or so porters charged unceremoniously down the gangway, accompanied by the odd, wannabee-stowaway, whom the police dealt with, well, forcefully.

At least we’d avoided the earthquake near Jakarta, on the day of our departure. 7.3 on the richter scale. Hundreds of people dead. In all, I think I missed 1 major and 2 minor earthquakes by the space of a day or so. I thought at the time that the Tectonic Gods were smiling down on me. And yeah, I was pretty lucky, but being in The Ring of Fire and all, there seem to be so many of them in Indo. Even though Sumatra lives right by the most volatile fault-line around (I crossed the equator on my journey through), Java has Krakatou, which is one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world. It erupted a hundred or so years, and had the impact equivalent to the force of 1000 – 2000 Hiroshima bombs (!) It was heard in Sri Lanka, felt along the English current, and the plethora of ash changed the colour of Indonesia’s sunsets for about two years.

A geologist’s dream, a worrier’s nightmare, and by far the coolest country I’ve been to so far.

So, for whoever who sees this blog, I obviously haven’t been blogging this past week

And that’s not a good thing, SORRY! It’s just that this week has been so intense it’s unbelievable. I’ve had basketball tryouts for the whole week which has been super tiring, and I only get home at 6-7, then I have to eat, shower and do my homework, so I haven’t had much time to blog basically. And, I had a bio test today and it was hard I think i failed it, but oh well. Then a couple days ago, I had an Indonesian (Bahasa) writing and oral test, and I think I failed that too.
I don’t think I missed out on anything else – maybe ? Not sure. If I think of something, I’ll write it later on in the post. So, other than that, I have just been having a rough rough hectic week and it’s been killer and all, and on top of that I think I’m developing a crush on this guy in a grade higher :S The problem issss, I don’t think he’d ever date me, but he’s so easy to talk to. And he’s uberrrr cute, and nice, and good hearted, and I know that sounds so weird and corny and all – but it’s true He’s genuine. And it feels like a nice change. Since I’ve liked this guy for like, 3 years (yeah, I know), and looking back at it now, I don’t even know why I even liked him. Sure, he was my best friend, but he was always so rude to me in all sorts of different ways, and I just ended up getting hurt all the time. I put myself through unnecessary pain, and I really have no idea why I did that now, and I’m kind of regretting it, to be honest. Aduh.

Okay, then I just felt like starting a new paragraph and all, but basically this guy and I used to be best friends – and maybe we still are now (?) I don’t really know. But I haven’t talked to him in a couple of days, and best friends don’t do that, you know? But I guess it’s different with a guy maybe. It’s just weird, I guess :S Well, finally now I’m not hung up on him – and I’m not going to do the same with this new guy, cuz’ that’s STUPID And I read this book called “He’s Just Not That Into You” and I don’t have it with me right now, so I can’t really find out who the author is, but it’s a guy and a girl, and there’s a movie of it But the book is AMAZINGGG, and it really opened my eyes to the guy world and I know that sounds weird – again. But WHO GIVES?

Yeah finally, I’ve been thinking these past days and I realized there are LOTS of people in my grade I don’t really like. See – I was at my friend’s house earlier today, and her brother asked me if I was allowed in the “popular” hut, and I said yes, because I used to be one of them. But now I realize that I’m glad that I stopped hanging out with them, because although lots of them are SUPER nice, I like hanging out with the people I hang out with now, because they’re all so funny, and we’re all close. It’s just that it’s FRESHMAN year, and there are a lot of people bunched up in one hut, and I really don’t like some of them, but yeah, what’s a girl to do? I guess I just gotta deal with it, if that makes any sense. I don’t think my mind is working enough for me to make sense

I love blogging. I just realized that. Because I’ve just blogged alottt, and I feel so much better in a way. Like I let all my feelings out without having to burden someone with it, you know? Yup, that’s about it.

L’alcalde de Tortosa, Ferran Bel, va dir ahir que el desenvolupament urbanístic del pla parcial del Camí de Roquetes «no servirà d’excusa» perquè la companyia Indo tanque la seva planta de fabricació d’ulleres. «És una història llarga, que en aquests moments ha portat l’Ajuntament a estar en un contenciós amb la companyia Indo», va remarcar. Així, Bel va agrair a Indo la cessió dels terrenys per poder fer el nou passeig de Tortosa a Roquetes, però a banda va aclarir que l’Ajuntament va instar els propietaris del pla parcial del Camí de Roquetes a fer un desenvolupament urbanístic que no afectés l’activitat de la planta.

«Vam dividir el desenvolupament en dues fases, per no forçar que Indo acabés tancant la fàbrica», va detallar. Segons Bel, l’Ajuntament tortosí farà «tots els possible per no forçar el tancament de la planta», com ara una modificació del pla parcial per garantir la continuïtat d’Indo. «Que ningú vulga utilitzar el desenvolupament urbanístic com una excusa per prendre algun altre tipus de decisió, perquè trenta llocs de treball són molt importants», va dir. Bel va advertir que fa un parell de mesos que no tenen converses amb Indo, però que els seus responsables van dir que es plantejarien el tancament si es desenvolupava el pla parcial o si se’ls feia marxar del sector. «Vam dividir el pla parcial per no forçar aquesta situació, però l’empresa l’ha impugnat», va lamentar Bel.

EL Periódico | l’empresa òptica deixarà la producció d’ulleres i lents

El grup de material òptic Indo deixarà de fabricar ulleres i lents i segregarà el 100% de la producció, segons el president de la companyia, Juan Casaponsa, que ahir va anunciar un canvi en el model de negoci en el qual cada vegada tenen menys pes els productes propis enfront dels que desenvolupen amb tercers i té més importància el valor afegit que se’ls dóna als productes.

En aquest sentit, va destacar que les factories de Tailàndia, la Xina i Tortosa (Tarragona), que fabriquen aquests productes, no estan en la «millor situació». A llarg termini, l’empresa no veu la necessitat de mantenir la plantes de lents de Tailàndia, on treballen unes 150 persones, la de Tortosa (Tarragona), que fabrica ulleres i compta amb 33 empleats, «no té data de tancament» i sobre la de la Xina Casaponsa va assenyalar que no pot avançar res.

El president d’Indo, que no ha descartat que hi pugui haver més comiats a Espanya, va assenyalar que, en l’actualitat, compren a tercers el 25% de la base del producte i que l’objectiu és arribar al 100% a mitjà termini, però com més aviat millor.
La companyia va presentar ahir els resultats del tercer trimestre de l’any, que va tancar amb unes pèrdues pròximes als dos milions d’euros, xifra que suposa una reducció del 77% respecte a l’any anterior, gràcies, principalment, als ingressos extraordinaris de 10 milions d’euros que li va aportar la venda de tecnologia a la japonesa Hoya.

El fabricant d’ulleres i material òptic Indo va tenir unes pèrdues netes de 2 milions d’euros en els nou primers mesos de l’any, una xifra que va suposar reduir en un 77,5% els números vermells respecte al mateix període de l’any anterior. La xifra de vendes consolidades es va situar en 71,6 milions fins al setembre, un 22,8% menys. Indo atribueix la caiguda al descens del consum a l’Estat i als mercats europeus, i a la caiguda de la inversió en obertures i plans de renovació.

Economia Digital | Indo perd 2 milions malgrat millorar un 77% el seu resultat

El grup català Indo ha registrat en el tercer trimestre d’aquest any unes pèrdues de 2 milions d’euros, que comparades amb les que va tenir en el mateix període de 2008, que van ser de 9 milions, representen una millora dels resultats del 77%, segons va comunicar l’entitat a la Comissió Nacional del Mercat de Valors.Indo ha especificat que en els resultats d’aquest últim trimestre han tingut un pes decisiu les despeses derivades del procés de reestructuració posat en marxa pel grup. Les esmentades despeses representen 9,1 milions associats a l’Expedient de Regulació d’Ocupació (ERE) a Espanya i al tancament de l’activitat productiva a Portugal i França.La xifra de vendes va assolir 71,6 milions d’euros cosa que representa un decrement del 22,8% . Aquesta situació es deu a la caiguda del consum a Espanya i els mercats europeus i al descens en inversió en obertures i plans de renovació d’establiments òptics.

Així mateix, la sortida del mercat alemany i la venda del negoci de decoració de les botigues ha suposat un decrement de 2,9 milions d’euros, la qual cosa suposa 3,1 punts de descens en els resultats.

Però no tot són notícies adverses perquè en el balanç ja es reflecteix el resultat del refinançament del deute acordat el juliol passat. Aquests acords han suposat que el 75% del deute de la companyia sigui considerat a llarg termini, mentre que el setembre de 2008 aquest apartat només afectava el 33% del deute.

Salam alaik!

Flu & Muscle Cramps rite now.Angkara KKNM yang kali pertama pada tahun ni.Dan saya terfikir bagaimana saya harus melalui KKNM yang diwajibkan kepada semua mahasiswa tahun-4 pada 2 bulan mendatang.Penat, letih dan seangkatan dengannya pasti jadi rutin mingguan sejak KKNM datang tak diundang ni.Desa SadangMekar, jauhnya boleh tahan.Sempadan antara 2 kecamatan di Bandung Barat.Pengalaman kelmarin akan saya kenang sampai bila-bila.Bukan senang nak melewatinya, harus tegar dan terus semangat.Moga semangat nak berKKN terus ada la dalam diri ni.Amin.

Desa SadangMekar.Kalau dengar-dengar memang macam best je bunyinya.Tertanya-tanya juga saya sebelum sampai ke sana.Mekar sangat ke desanya hingga namanya sedemikian rupa.Dan bila dah berdepan dengan situasi yang sebenar, baru kau tahu SadangMekar belum semekar bunyinya.So, here the stories.

Perjalanan dari KAMPUS UNPAD DIPATI UKUR ke SadangMekar memakan masa 2 jam lebih.Dan dalam perjalanan, mata tak mampu dilelapkan walaupun mengantuk bangat.Mengantuk gara2 menonton NUR KASIH EP 20 pagi sebelum ke sana.Malam Jumaat hari tu ada MAISEN dan balik pun dah hampir ham 1 pagi, so saya bersengkang mata menonton kesudahan kisah cinta NUR dan ADAM.

Kenapa saya tak tidur walaupun saya harap sangat nak tidur?Jalannya memang horror habis, berlubang sana dan sini.Jalan berbukit-bukit yang dikelilingi jurang yang tingginya boleh tahan.Takut juga kalau bangun-bangun dah tercampak ke dalam gaung tu.So, kita tahan jelah mata.

Sampai-sampai hari dah petang.Rumah sewa Rp600k tu boleh tahan.Bila malam menjelang, parut pun dah lapar minta diisi.Kata KETUA DESA tu ada katering sebelah rumah dia.Malangnya kedai makan tu tutup.So,kena la makan ala kadar je.Nasi dan telur goreng utk 2x makan.Syukur ada juga makanan lagi.

Adventure bila menjelang pagi Ahad.Kami ditugaskan meninjau kawasan desa yang berbukit bukau.Jalan beramai-ramai ni boleh dikatakan seronok juga sambil menikmati keindahan alam ciptaan Tuhan.Tak sedar, berjalan hampir 1 jam ke KANTOR DESA yang tersergam indah di atas bukit.Dan tak sedar juga ditambah tolak, rupa-rupanya kami berjalan kaki 8 jam hari semalam.

Bab berjalan kaki ni saya tak kisah sangat pada mulanya.Sebab kampung saya pun boleh tahan jauh dan luasnya.Tapi tak tertanding dengan DESA SEDANGMEKAR yang masih belum mekar ni.Dari AJK kampung semalam, katanya desa ni terdiri dari 3 dusun, 9 Rukun Warga dan hampir 5000 penduduk.Dan kami harus mendapatkan maklumat detail berkenaan semua di atas.Semua diwajibkan datang 8 jam hari biasa dan menginap di hujung minggu.

Boleh dikatakan saya seronok berjalan-jalan semalam.Tapi bila pagi tadi, rasa kaki hilang entah kemana, barulah tahu betapa seksanya saya nak memekarkan Desa Sadang Mekar yang belum mekar sepenunya.So, nak tak nak bersiap sedialah menggunakan kaki yang dianugerahkan TUhan minggu-minggu mendatang.Waduh!
